The young apprentice's mind was buzzing. Millions of thoughts and questions poured through his head. Who should he trick today? What trick should he pull? Should he use one of his standard tricks, or invent a new one? A small grin tugged at the corners of his lips. Oh, today would be a fun day, but then again, what day wasn't? Glancing at everyone around him, he could see no hint of any movement save for the slight rise and fall of the flanks of his den mates. Tsk. Let them sleep, he had better things to do. Eyes glowing, he rose fluidly to his paws and slipped out of the den.
It was still dark. Then again, now that it was leaf-fall, the nights would grow longer and longer for a while yet. The moon was low in the sky, a beautiful, pale disk in the sky. Dawn couldn't be far off. Looking around the camp, barely anyone was up. The occasional cat sat quietly, munching on some prey, but that was it. Everyone was still asleep. With a slight shrug to himself, he padded over to the small fresh kill pile. The fresh kill wasn't really fresh anymore, but it would do. It wasn't his fault his mentor wasn't up yet. Bending his head, he picked up a small frog. Honestly, he wasn't even that hungry. He just wanted to try and annoy his mentor by eating before he hunted. Sitting down, he began to devour the small animal.

Slystep watched her apprentice from the shadows. Little did he know that they weren't going hunting today... they were going to learn to fight. She was ok at hunting and she enjoyed patrolling... but she was best at fighting. Let him eat... She would remind him later when he was begging for fresh food, that he chose to eat that. She stretched. She would catch something on the way.
Looking at the sky she smiled. There was the sun rising. She twitched her tail and walked from the shadow. "Looks tasty GlacierPaw..." She brushed by him. "Make sure you don't fill up too much." She twitched her tail. "Cause we are fighting today..."
Her ears twitched. "Since you're up moving... Lets go now." She headed toward the entrance to the camp. "If your not in the clearing in...lets say 5 minutes" She smirked. "Then your gonna get it." She laughed. He wouldn't know she was a great fighter... They picked her to train his hunting... they werent worried too much about how well she taught him to fight...

With a slight shrug, Glacierpaw threw off his mentor's sharp words. Did she honestly think that would foil his plans? The frog wasn't even big, a kit could have eaten it. Oh well, he wasn't going to turn down free food. He ate is slowly, savoring every bite of the tiny creature. Other Clans didn't see how he could love such a slimy thing, he couldn't see how they could live without them. Liking his lips, he dragged out each action. Did she expect him to be there on time? His mentor seemed to be grossly underestimating him. His respect had to be earned.
Stretching out his muscles, he made his way over the training clearing. He didn't rush, he stopped every once in a while just to shuffle some leaves this way or that. Battle training. This should be entertaining. Idly, he wondered if his mentor was any good. Maybe she fought like a pathetic ThunderClan warrior? Or worse. He hoped she was decent. Despite his jokes, he did want to be a warrior. He paused just outside the clearing.
Should he try and ambush her? Was she already here? She should be. His mind whizzed through millions of things. With a slight shrug to himself, he threw it off this once. He wanted to get a feel of his mentor before he pulled anything too big. He had to find her weak spots.

SlyStep rolled her eyes and took off out of the camp. Her paws stepped lightly. Her tail hung low as she walked to the clearing. She really did want to like her apprentice. But he could be so cold. She frowned thinking to herself. Glancing at the sky she watched a hawk fluttering to the ground. She would have to remember to tell moonstar about it and to keep the kits inside.
She stopped when she reached the training area. She sat cleaning a paw waiting. She looked around when she thought the time was up... Well he called for it, she sniffed. moving to up wind she laid in the bracken waiting and watching. Her brown pelt hid her completely. Ambush... nah she would see what he would do first.

Eyes darting from side to side, Glacierpaw made his way into the centre of the clearing. He could tell Slystep was here. Although the wind was against him, her scent still reached him faintly. He had a rather refined nose and tracking was definitely one of the things he was best at, second only to his haughty manner.
Scanning the clearing, there was no obvious movement from any of the cover. Glaring first at one pile of bracken and then at the other, he paused. Which one was she in? Sitting down, he began to lick his paw with a nonchalant demeanor. "I know you're there, I can smell you. Why don't you come out and start acting like a mentor, rather than a kit who doesn't want to be caught?"
A flash of brown in the sky caught his attention. A hawk. Something appeared to be dangling from his talons, prey? With a disgruntled sigh, he turned his eyes back down. "One less piece of prey for ShadowClan. We could have caught that instead, had we been hunting." He commented, referring to his mentor's sudden change of plan to go battle training.

While he was watching that precious hawk she shifted. she was silent as she moved. Her brown pelt was plastered to the ground. He wasn't even trying. Her ears were flat against her head. Damn it, if she was going to waste precious time to try and get enough information into his small skull he was going to be prepared.
She was so angry she forgot to watch her tail. It twitched making the bracken rustle. Stupid tail... wasn't good for anything anyway. She launched. he slow movements had positioned her close enough to attack. "Defend yourself..." She snarled as she landed in front of him. She lowered herself into a crouch to bat at him.

As a bundle of brown fur flew at him, Glacierpaw couldn't help but smirk slightly in the few precious seconds between his mentor's tail hitting the bracken and Slystep landing square in front of him. Looked like his ruse had worked, his mentor was finally out of hiding.
Still, his smugness could not last for long. Now came the hard part. Battle training. He loathed battle training, it was one of his worst aspects. Still, he supposed he had no choice if he wanted to become a warrior. Sliding down into a crouch, he faced his mentor, watching her muscles to see where she would go, as he'd been taught. He couldn't win if she attacked full force, so it was just as well that this was a practice session, and he had to play defensive for now.
His blue eyes analyzed her, waiting for the next movement.

Slystep had watched him as a kit play fight with his siblings and she had knew he wasn't 100% on his fighting. So she would fix that. She watched him as he watched her. Good he was watching her move. She shifted her weight to look as if she was going to move to her left and strike with her right... But when she started to move she changed at last second and did the opposite.
She had her claws in although it may have brought him down a few notches to have a few claw marks. She darted a quick glance at him to make sure she was out of striking distance before she sat back and licked a paw. "You watching too intently." She frowned... Her mentor had told her that so many moons ago. SHe shook off the deja vu and looked back at him.. "If you wait too long just watching it gives your opponent time to think up a way to trick you... " She smirked. "You have to be unpredictable..."

As soon as he muscles twitched, he instantly ducked under where her paw would have gone, but then the totally unexpected hit him. Literally. A white and black missile seemed to hit his face, from the opposite direction he had anticipated. Though the she-cat's claws were sheathed, Glacierpaw's face stung slightly where she hit him as he staggered backwards a bit, trying to regain his balance.
A few second later she was sitting facing him and licking her paw. He gritted his teeth. Why'd it have to be battle training? Still, he couldn't help the retort that slipped through his lips. "And I suppose as soon as you say that you expect me to lunge at you, and have me thinking I'm being unpredictable in doing so, when I can see you're out of my range right now." He knew how to judge distances well, it was essential to any good trick.

Slystep frowned. "Now don't go assuming that i was goning to tell you to lung at me." She twitched her ears... "You aren't on the offense yet... you are still on defense..." She smirked placing her paw back on the ground. "Offense will be easy for you since you are exceptional at hunting." She stood and moved in an arch toward him.
"I figured it out...." She smiled. "You assume too much!" She crouched down and flicked her tail. "What do you think i'm going to do?" She shifted her weight the same way she had done before. "don't over analyze it either" she said as an after thought "what does it look like im going to do?"

With a snort of contempt, Glacierpaw watched as his mentor slowly moved towards him in an arch. Offense? Seriously? She must have been crazy. Maybe she'd eaten something bad that was affecting her mind. How was he supposed to attack someone? He wasn't any good at fighting. Lashing his tail in irritation, he knew he had to give it a go.
He blinked at her next statement. He... assumed too much? How did that even make sense? Giving her a doubtful look, he watched her. "It appears that you are leaning that way." He flicked his tail to indicate. Don't assume. She might not do a double take, she might actually go in one direction.

She flicked her ears. "Right...But you know what I did last time too right... " She smiled. "So you have to protect both sides at once." She twitched her tail and watched him for a moment before going on. "There is a theory that less is more." She shifted her weight the other way to see how he would react. She twitched her ears. "The one who moves the less will eventually be the one to win." She started walking around him to see if he would keep her from his back.
"So when i lunge you need to keep your eyes toward me and then your other side protected by being toward your allies...in this case away from me..." She went slowly. "Just watch me move and either counter or dodge... just dont let me get you..." She started stalking and bunched her muscles to move toward the right and then gathered her weight in her back end to launch herself forward.

As Slystep began to circle around him, he cautiously began to match her steps, keeping her in full view the whole time, so she couldn't attack from behind. Never turn your back on the opponent. That much Glacierpaw knew. Less is more? He pondered for a few seconds, I guess that makes sense. Don't make your movements too big, or else you'll overbalance or take too long and your opponent will easily take advantage. Move less, conserving yourself, and you'll stay light on your paws, ready to attack, and quicker.
Protect both sides. Easier said than done, he supposed. His eyes hardened slightly as he heard her next comment. He would not be defeated. He would learn to fight. Finding his resolve, he tensed his muscles, ready to move, but did not lunge. He would let her make the first move. As he noticed her muscles bunching up, ready to leap, he lowered himself slightly. He could move quicker from a crouch, and his weigh was much move evenly distributed in it. It didn't feel too different from a hunting crouch. That's it. Treat her like prey. Large prey. You are the hunter. You will be victorious. He waited for her leap. As soon as her paws left the ground, she would be unable to fully change direction. Then he would dodge.

She could see him watching her. Good. Now for a little cunning. She pulled out of her crouch and Slystep Leaped. And was proud to see him dodge. She landed on his other side. She waited for him to turn and face her. "Good... now lets do the same exact thing but change from defense to offense.. Just trust your instincts"

Offense? This she-cat was out of her mind. Glacierfrost was convinced. Opening his mouth to shoot a sharp retort, he slowly forced his jaws shut and gulped. As mouse-brained as she is, this cat is my mentor. She won't tell me stuff just so I get it wrong. Gazing at her levelly, he felt a small spark of resolution set it. He could do this!
Sliding down into a crouch, he waited to let her make the first move. If he saw an opening, he might take it.
