User ImageWhite wings broke out against the darkened sky in a stark contrast, though the feathers that followed it offered an almost perfect blend. It was becoming routine to soar amongst the sky after night was brought in, scouting for any signs of others' need for her, as vague as the calls may have been. She was not one to turn a blind eye to duty or the bond conceived between those who thrived in her realm, anyways.

So the black body of the goddess sliced through the crisp, cooling air of the night. The crystal held on her neck dangled, stretching to clink against the golden ornament that had it bound in place. Interested and intent eyes scanned the grounds below, allowing free ears to point in alertness. It didn't seem like much was going to transpire this night; the goddess could tell peace settled in to the forms of the few felines she passed by while flying. It was as if she could take an early break from the rest of her nightly responsibilities...

However, during her breaks, she was quite prone to run into more curious situations, some more taking than others...

It was night and Khuluma had not made it back to the herd yet. As much as he knew he COULD travel at night, the idea still unnerved him and he went off to find shelter. The thing was, shelter was hard to come by at times. Trees in this part of the prairie were lacking, and the one he did find was covered in monkeys, all of which were armed with rotting fruit and not friendly to lions or gods. Having avoided most of the flying projectiles, he trotted across the cool grass and shook himself.

Night to him was quite, and Khuluma never liked the dark. True, the stars were out and the moon distant, but neither of them could come down and offer him company. Instead, he whined to himself, ears back and down and tail tucked as he took let the dark hide his discomfort and fear. In the heavy shadows, he was a shimmering shape of gold, and he knew that being noticeable in the dark only welcomed the company that, even as lonely as he was, was not after.

Frowning, he huffed. “It’s too dark here. If the moon was like the sun, it wouldn’t be as bad, but it’s never constant.” Unlike the sun, who on a clear day was always bright, the moon was different even if the sky was clear. It was cruel of a shining orb to do that to the locals down here on earth.

While the stars and moon could not come down to be any creature's company, the night itself embodied in the black feline soared downwards, a feeling tugging at her ear in this direction. The whine of a single cub in the shifting dark grasses below escalated in volume to the goddess's ears, and she could feel herself sensing the frightful being that rested upon the earth. So she had immediately swooped down, large wings spreading; though it possibly looked like her wingspan had halved, the bottom feathers being indistinguishable from the rest of the sky. She sailed silently through her flight, and was in no time near enough to spot the very bright, and possibly glinting form of gold amongst the blackened ground.

The shape was tinier than her usual company - it was something young, she instantly recognized, and her concern for its welfare increased. She couldn't help now, after all the years, but feel more caring towards cubs and youth; she couldn't even count the number of times she had been in those stages herself, yearning for the comfort of a bigger paw.

But as she drew near towards the cub as swiftly as she could, she noticed something very peculiar and most different than many things she ever saw, or even remembered seeing in a past life. Golden locks of... mane were already showing, and on a small cub that should have had barely a tuft growing. Something that strange, she guessed, could only occur on a god, nodding to the white pale-tipped wings peeking on the cub's back. It was strange that she seemed to be running into numerous gods these nightly visits.

"What was that you said?" she inquired, stepping up very close to him, as she was unaware whether he desired any personal space, but wanted to be close because she felt his distress of the darkness, "It's okay, I am here. I am Bast, of the night. It's not that bad, though you may look like the sun itself, so perhaps that is why you would prefer it when it's out."

She smiled comfortably, winking, "But I personally don't."

Khuluma had not expected company. Yes, he wanted it, but he had been set on thinking of all the company he didn’t want – hyenas, vultures, and very big bugs – that he had invested little time in the company he might want. A goddess perhaps was something he would be for, but since he had not been paying attention as he should, which was to say he should have been looking out for all the things he was thinking in his head that he would not like to meet, he did not see her.

This meant when he heard someone talk, he gave a high-pitched shriek and fell back. Bast, of the night, was not Bast, Goddess of the night, to Khuluma. He hadn’t made the connection, and went straight to thinking he had ran into a large, silent killer that would be here to eat someone as lovely and very tender as he was. A god meal to a mortal was probably heaven to their crude palate. Not a fighter, he extended tiny claws and looked out to see what he saw was just darkness.

His body shivered, and his wings tucked in to protect himself as he looked out to the voice. It was female, soft, and very close. If it hadn’t been for Bast’s white wing parts, Khuluma would have been hard pressed to spot her as quickly as he had. When he did, he could make out a large, black outline, pale eyes, and white protrusions from her back. Since he saw now feathers, the night melting with the night, his mind thought they were bones poking straight from her back and he sucked in. Not knowing how to fight and having no mother, he went straight to pleading for himself. Help, he knew, was not on the way.

Oh PLEASE don’t eat me!” he called out, frigid and stepping back. “I – I know I may look good to eat, but I'm not! I just was walking and I didn’t mean to pass by here. I can run the other way if you want. I can do some sort of wish or a favor –” Not that Khuluma even knew what powers he had yet or how to use them to make this bargain. “…I just don’t want to be made into a smelly corpse!!! ” He felt close to tears at this point, but being terrified helped to stun yourself enough to not even sniffle. The only thing that seemed animate in him was his heart, which kicked against his ribcage like a angry gazelle.

I'm going to die. I'm going to die. Oh geez. I'm going to be made into a meal. Big and Dark. Going to die. Monster in the dark is going to eat me!

Despite the shrill, sudden shriek, Bast did nothing to falter in her words or relaxed footing on the earth. Well, this certainly happened to be something new, as when creatures usually called for her company, they had some sense to know that she was the one who answered those calls, and she wasn't a particularly bad goddess. Perhaps in early centuries, but now she liked to think that she had some form of gentleness in dealing with others.

When the god cub recoiled into a curled up ball, she simply stopped, thinking it was best to not touch him in case that provoked his fear further. Obviously he did not hear her, or perhaps his paranoia made him think that her words were threatening. But her hope to be recognized increased when she saw him peeking out at her - she offered a slight smile, wrinkling anxious brows. To her dismay, his cries afterward were the total opposite of what she thought the cub's reaction would be.

She blinked at his frantic words, his plea, and resisted the urge to move closer when he backed away. The poor thing must have had many harsh incidents before - and at a young age, too! Or perhaps he had been reborn and remembered a cruel past? But if that was so, then he would have had more sense to actually fully examine before he set himself to a judgment...

"I don't eat, little one," she said slowly and calmly again, hoping an additional soothing tone would get him to stop practically hyperventilating, "But..."

Her curiosity got the best of her; he mentioned being able to do a wish or favor, which could mean that he had a decent handle on his powers as a cub. Although Bast was mostly capable and in control of her abilities as a cub, they were far different than the direct powers other gods had.

"What kind of things would you be able to do?" she suddenly asked, thinking that he would eventually realize that she meant no harm; continuing talking in a non-threatening manner would greatly benefit that cause, she hoped.

The voice was smooth and calm, and he tried to breath in to show that he had to settle. He was not being attacked yet, which mean she did not want to eat him, or was interested in what he had to say. When he heard it was both, he started to think. If she did not eat, she was a Goddess. It was the only conclusion he could make as any mortal HAD to eat. Seeing as he was not going to be picked apart and also aware that he was not in the presence of a hungry mortal but another god, a supernatural kin, he started to breath slowly. He would have been excited and welcoming if it had not been for his instinct to be worried when he was alone and vulnerable at night, and so he had to collect himself first.

It was then she asked about his offer, and he realized that in his haste, he made a bargain he did not mean to make. His tongue, always moving, had slipped up in a moment of panic. He had no powers that he could think of, and he couldn’t see what he could do that a goddess herself could not do herself. He tried to think, and thought that if he could do much of the same thing she could do, then it was just a matter of doing something that would just mean she wouldn’t have to do it herself, letting her have the luxury of relaxing while he took on a task. “I can speak for you.” It was a horrible offer, but it was all he had. “If there is every a time you need a message delivered or for you to have your voice heard, I can go to someone and speak on your behalf.” He had offered this once before to a friend. “I’m the God of Rhetoric, you see. I know how to speak well. I can be your voice for you when you find you can not express yourself the way you want to or in quite so many ways as I can. ” He hoped it would work. It was his inborn skill that he owned, and not a power. As of yet, he had no idea what his powers were, but seeing as she might be able to do something with her own powers to him, he made his last offer. “When the time comes, I can come back to you and make a new offer, when my powers come to me. Right now, they are seeds that have not shown themselves. With time, if you allow it, they will come and bear the fruit of my own powers when I come of age.” It was either this or that.

As he made the offer, he let his eyes adjust, concentrating on her form. The shape of her body, black, started to place shadows, and he noticed a shimmering that he made out to be feathers, but seemed transparent to the blanket of the night sky above. “Bast…of the Night. You…would not happen to be the Goddess of the Night?” It was they way she put it that threw him off. Many Gods and Goddesses would address themselves by their name and state their domain. She was one of the firsts to say it different. It almost sounded poetic.

As Bast listened to the child god's words, the smile she displayed was genuine as well as her interest. His offer was intriguing to say the least - he seemed to be a mature god despite his physical age. As well, his knowledge of his abilities (or lack-thereof) piqued the night goddess's curiosity, and she wasn't sure what question she wished to ask him first.

His offer to speak on her behalf was useful, at least to her. Though she had a companion, she knew mortals had their very restricted limitations on the earthly plane in which neither she nor the god cub was bound. It wasn't the fact that she was in need of services or wished to order others around - in fact, she was humble in her requests of assistance in others; she even felt bad at times asking things of her companion. Bast was self-sufficient, and held some pride and dignity in that characterization.

"That is a very generous offer and lovely skill, little one. I can hear how well you are with words already, and I thank you for your concern to assist me. It is true that I am not active during the day, and perhaps could one day need to speak to someone during that time, but I cannot ask you to promise such a kind offer; I can manage on my own. But that is not to say that you are inept; I can tell you are quite capable, God of Rhetoric..."

Bast's smile broadened as she continued again, "And my well wishes on your discoveries as you grow older. Goodness knows I've been doing the same thing since I was a cub..."

And at his last question, Bast almost threw a chuckle out in half amusement and half embarrassment. She didn't mean to sound as intimidating or strange as she may have when she presented herself, but she assumed most creatures could tell who she was when she came - as most welcomed her almost motherly nature and gentle composition - especially when she was called upon during her shift. She nodded, then, as she began her answer.

"Yes, that I am. You see, my task is to keep the night coming in daily right after day - it is a simple process, yet complicated in its own way. I make sure the gods and goddesses of the night's components are present in their own representation in this half of the day. Most of them are relatives - distant or not. You'll probably find that a lot of things you see at night are one of my cousins, perhaps. As well, I make sure that whoever may need me at this time are protected. Calls to me are always answered."

As she finished her basic explanation, her wings folded in and she began to lower herself onto the ground. "You seem frightened of the night at first, and I hoped there was something I could do to help. The night is not as scary as it may seem."

While he was disappointed his offer wasn't fully accepted, he decided that he if he should meet her again with new powers, he would make the offer again. As she settled, he settled, curling down on the ground and looking up at the sky as she told of the family reunion that happened each night, orchestrated by the goddess, to bring about the production that happened from dusk to dawn. It brought on a swirling fantasy of many gods and goddesses moving about, passing by with gentle smiles to their relatives, all happy to be close and working together, and taking great pride in their everyday (or every night) work. It seemed nice to have company at night while you were awake and everyone retiring at the same time. He was sure they probably talked once in a while, not unless their duties kept them from seeing each other, and he liked that they seemed to be always in reach of each other. Never truly alone. It was a warm thought that softened the night for him.

"I was afraid, but thinking of your entire family working together to bring the night, up in the sky, seems to be too tender a thought to make it seem scary. Then again, that is a pretty picture in the sky, but I'm a bit afraid of what is working down here at night. It's very dark when you come around, and I don't know what can be creeping about." Alone in the shadows, the eyes played tricked and his ears picked up every snap of a twig or rustling of the high grass. Figures moved, and he could not judge if he should make himself bigger or smaller to insure his own safety.

Bast kindly listened to his response, happy that he had in turn listened in such a deep way. Despite her work to listen to prayers at night, she understood that there were realistic perils that were simply unavoidable that took place especially during the time of darkness.

"Yes," she said, explaining, "The night is related to Darkness as well. Old Roho'eusi may look daunting, even scary at times, but..."

She looked up, as if the black, large winged form of her relative were about to appear on cue; it was unlikely for the two to cross paths, however, even if darkness was a part of night as much as night was dark. And unlike her, he had the privilege of waking at any part of the day, and Bast would not be surprised if she once visited his sleeping form at night.

"...But Darkness is at heart a truly compassionate character. The dark won't hurt you, but unfortunately, more sinister creatures have taken a liking to it."

With another look at the young god cub, she realized that despite her presence, he was still scared. As her maternal instincts rose up, she leaned in closer to the yellow youngster and attempted a small nuzzle.

"Call my name if you are ever in trouble at night. It is not a lie - I will come," she whispered, "Much like tonight."
PostPosted: Sat Aug 21, 2010 10:23 am

He curled into the nuzzle, always appreciating the feeling of a larger Goddess. It was always a moment where he closed his eyes and tried to pretend he was related - and with what she had just said - he tried to picture himself in her massive family. To think of it that way, he was sure he wouldn't have been afraid of the dark at all. Unfortunately when he opened his eyes, he was back to being a separate, unrelated god to the other. "You are very kind to offer your company to me when you are very busy at this time, especially for someone who is a stranger to you." He now felt guilty and foolish for taking so much of her time during the time she was most needed.

He settled down, decided that she had done more than enough to be kind to him and extend her wing to offer her company."I suppose I'll be revising my fear to that of night time creatures as opposed to the night in general." He wouldn't be able to see the night in the same light (or darkness) as before. "If you should ever need me, limited as my powers are, I would be more than happy to help - as a friend." Not by a due, but because he willingly wanted to.

"Dont speak nonsense," Bast replied to his guilty words, almost in the stern manner a parent would use to their child, "No one who calls for me is a stranger. I know everyone who knows me by my calling, which leaves out not that many, if any."

She chuckled and continued, "Revere the night and it will revere you. Those who are kind to each other will receive kindness from me. If only I could extend my powers to the other half of the day..."

Bast shifted herself likewise, spreading her wings in a readied position. She was very much glad for the chance encounter with the godling, and smiled with a nod at his statement.

"I thank you for the opportunity, and for the meeting. I look forward to our next night stroll, or if it shall not come soon, then I hope to see you grown and strong one night."

Bast offered a final nod, and then took off with one single push of her large wings, blending into the night she represented.
