Just off the top of my head,
'John Locke' was a philosopher who held the ideals of man becoming more pure through nature.
'Rousseau' was another philosopher who had related ideals; unfortunately I don't have the info handy. It's popped up on some other Lost sites.
What I like is that the first season specifically covers the first forty days on the island. Biblical prophets would often go and wander the wilderness for forty days and forty nights to seek mystic visions.
What've you guys noticed?

There have been countless literary references. Lord of the Flies, where there are children who crash on an island, hunt boar, and generally try to form a society. Also, Sawyer is reading Watership Down, which, contrary to popular belief, is not only about bunnies.
There are more, I just can't remember right now. sweatdrop

Yah, was going to mention Watership Down but managed to forget somehow. Veeery interesting. Which then sort of links 'Lost' to 'Donnie Darko' if one wants to get very Six Degrees about it.

He's.. out there, though. And much brighter than Boone. sweatdrop Yeah, I think Michael's some sort of archangel. Not sure what exactly, though, since I'm not Christian. sweatdrop

I can imagine it now, your prof. would ask what kind of business you're wondering about, and you can just ask again: "Sir...did Carlyle bake wedding cakes?"

Oh, how could I ever forget the sperm whale? Whaley, we used to call him. The magical adventures the two of us would go on. We would sail through the sea, singing sea chanties. Good times.
