Baby steps, that's what she kept telling herself. This was one of them: calling an old friend out of the blue to set up lunch. She'd seen Sati, briefly, at that party she had tried to stay at. It had been too large of a step, too many people that she didn't know in one place, and she had found that she didn't have the energy to deal with them all.
One friend at a time, she thought that was good enough for right now. And, doing something safe, like lunch. Everyone had to eat, after all. And, small talk, catching up. Judging by what she had seen during her very brief stint at the party, she could tell she had a lot of catching up to do with Sati, and probably the others, as well.
She'd reach out to them soon, she promised herself. For now, she was content to sit in the solitude of her table on the patio area of the quaint little cafe that was decided upon. It was clean, had decent food, and more importantly it was in her price range. The autumn air was not so biting as to keep people from sitting outside to enjoy their lunches, and the sun shone brightly, a long-lost friend.
Nyoka was slouched down in her seat, examining her gold talons as the silver tip of her tail tapped idly under the table. She'd actually ran a comb through her long purple-tipped black hair, but the result was still the wild look she always had about her. She blamed her snakes. I'm here way too early, she thought. And, she was right. She had put so much importance on this meeting - as if the outcome of it would be the deciding factor of whether or not she was fit to enter back into the social circle she had seemingly abandoned so long ago. As a result, she had dashed out of her flat without looking at the time, and ended up at the cafe half an hour early. She'd already downed two cups of hot tea and was currently working on her third....

Sati was glad Nyoka had called to arrange this lunch, they hadn't talked long at that ill-fated party (even now she wondered if anything had happened to Nyoka, or if her old friend had simply slipped away before the ensuing chaos).
Sati didn't have the nerves that her friend had, and she left only a short while before they were due to meet in the Cafe, pushing upon the door into the smells of food and looking around to see where Nyoka was sat only a few minutes after the agreed time.
'Hello,' she said with a smile, taking a seat opposite Nyoka, crossing and tucking her sandalled feet under her chair, her sari skirts falling about her seated legs.
'Been waiting long?'

She was slipping ... she hadn't heard anyone approaching. Silently, she chastised herself and stomped down on the frown that threatened to emerge because of it.
Instead, Nyoka smiled and waited as Sati sat down across from her. "No, I haven't been waiting long," she said. Honestly, it hadn't been too long, and considering Sati had been on time, she wasn't about to tell her just how long she had waited.
"Sorry I bailed on the party. Too much, too soon," she started when Sati settled. "I hope I didn't miss anything too interesting," she added, a smile curling her lips once more.

'I understand, and you were lucky all things considered.'
Sati grimaced at the remembering, shuddering and feeling cold, despite the warm surroundings, and the fact that she was with a friend. She tried to push the feeling away, the memory away. Realistically it shouldn't have made such an impact; it had just been a trick played on her mind, but it had shown had vulnerable she was now.
'Have you ordered?' she said, trying to stay present, and not in that all too recent past.

Nyoka watched Sati, faintly glowing eyes narrowing a little at her reaction to her seemingly innocent apology about the party. What was that about? Glossed, dark green lips frown a little as she lifts her cup up to them to take a sip of now-cooled tea.
"No, I've not ordered yet. I wanted to wait for you," she replied, almost cautiously. They were friends, Nyoka knew this. But, it had been such a long time. And, although her fondness for the other fa'e had come back as though it was second nature, as with everyone else she didn't know where she stood. But, hell, her friend seemed to be struggling with something, a woman she respected ... hell, she even thought of her as an equal, which was a sentiment that was not given lightly by the warrioress. So, she asked, "Why was I lucky? What happened?" the quirk of her brow suggested that she was a little concerned over what she had just observed.

Sati might not have had the nerves Nyoka had about this meeting, but she was nervous in her own right, and visibly flinched when someone walked over to take their order. She said what she wanted, ordering nothing more than a drink and something to push around her plate.
'It's hard to explain. I don't know the reasons for it happening, I just...remember. Everything went foggy, like real foggy, not like I was drunk or anything. And dark. Then there were these creatures, fishy smell, but men and women. They attacked.' she fell quiet as their orders were bought back and she waited for the person to leave the table before continueing.

Nyoka didn't order much herself, just a soup - which was one of the other reasons she had chosen this place - and another cup of tea. But, she listened carefully to Sati, instantly regretting not having stuck around. She seemed to always miss the good stuff....
"They attacked?" she asked, quirking a brow. She motioned for Sati to continue, hoping the other Fa'e was willing to.
