Danika had risen at sunrise that morning feeling surprisingly nervous about going to the new academy. Having kept poor grades and long since stopped caring, it was almost unnerving to find herself with butterflies in her stomach. She supposed that even she wasn't immune to the fear of change.

The girl had requested to be dropped off early that morning so that she would have time to walk around the campus before the other students began their travelings. It was a strange feeling to know that she wouldn't be going home after school, but rather to the dorms. Going home only on the weekends was going to be a bit depressing for Danika due to the lack of serenity and familiarity of her things, but the greenhouse and library were fairly extensive at the Crystal Academy so she mentally consoled herself and fell to a neutral meditative state.

She hadn't actually seen her new dorm yet. All she knew was that she was without a room mate, which suited her quite well. Danika was almost tempted to go see the room now, but decided that could wait til after classes. For now, she was curious to see which students were the early risers. It wasn't for any particular reason, just a habit of scouting other's habits. Routine made abnormalties pop out all the more blatantly, so being able to note those habits of people were a caution sign for Danika.

Mili sat in the chair in her dorm room, braiding the the last bit of one of her pigtails. She grabbed a light blue ribbon, and tied it to the end. Then she attached a small star shaped button to the ribbon, and proceeded to loop around it to make a small bow. She always wanted to look her best at school, after all popularity didn't win itself.

She put everything she needed for the day into her bag: one spiral-bound five subject notebook, extra pencils, and no textbooks. Textbooks were for people who did their homework, and Mili wasn't one of them. She saw no point in it when she already knew the answers; it defeated the purpose.

Of course, the reason she was up earlier than usual today was to meet with her Geometry teacher about that... again. He just didn't understand that the repetition of the assignments he was giving out were boring and pointless.

With a strong shove, Mili pushed open her door, and walked down the hallway to exit the dorms. She waved at a group of girls that were sitting in the commons area in their pajamas and eating a light breakfast. She opened the set of metal doors that lead to outside, and walked into the sun.

She paused for a moment and covered her eyes with her hand while they adjusted. An audible sigh escaped from her, and then she began to walk to class.

Having scouted out the campus the day before, Danika was already prepared to find her classes without getting lost. After aimlessly wandering around for some time, she spotted a flower that had been carelessly uprooted in one of the floewr beds. She stared at it for a long minute, quickly looking to her left, then her right, followed by her sidling up to it and gingerly shifting the soil to make room for it. Once the flower was rooted and properly standing, Danika clapped her hands together.

So she had scouted her classrooms, but she hadn't quite made note of where the restrooms were just yet. She stared at the dirt on her hands, giving an annoyed sigh as she started to walk again, this time to try and find some source of water. She saw another student approaching from the opposite direction and paused, unable to decide if she should ask for directions. Last time she did that, it ended up being a rather awkward moment. No, she could find it on her own. She did, however, make eye contact and gave a polite nod, hoping that this wasn't the kind of school where everyone knew everyone and new kids stuck out.

Mili began walking to her morning meeting. This wasn't going to be pleasant. At all.

As she was going along, she saw a pretty, yet confused, girl that she didn't recognize. It looked like she wasn't sure where to go. When the other girl nodded at her, Mili nodded back and kept walking past her.

She stopped. What was she doing? This was a good opportunity to size this new girl up and see what group she would fit into. Perhaps she was shy, but yearning deep inside to be popular. If so, Mili could try to wrangle her into her clique.

Mili hoped she wasn't an outcast; attractive loners were such a waste.

She turned, "Hello. You look a bit lost, you're new, right?"

Danika was surprised to have been spoken to, quickly hiding her hands casually behind her back. She was flustered, and a bit angry at having been called out on how lost she always seemed to be looking these days, not to mention she still had pent up frustration from her previous failed socializing attempt.

"Being new automatically makes me lost?" She asked, her voice a flat, neutral tone, dark eyes shining. It occured to her that she was just taking her anger out on a poor stranger now, rebuking herself for her poor choice of words. Danika took a quiet, deep breath, mentally apologizing for her rudeness while not being able to bring herself to verbalize it.

Mili took a step back; she wasn't expecting to get that kind of reaction. She thought it was incredibly rude that this other girl addressed her like that when she was just trying to help. Good thing Crystal focused on teaching things like manners, because this girl was going to need a lesson about them.

She huffed, "No it normally doesn't, but given the clueless look on your face, I'd say in this situation it does". Her tone was biting and her words sharp. She ruffled her brow to a scowl, and gave a strong glare.

Of course, being rude back wasn't the best way to welcome someone to the school, but Mili couldn't just let the comment slide.

"If I am so new, then by what experiences would you know upon which to read my face when you have never seen it before? I could have been laughing and you wouldn't have been able to tell." Neutral and cold though she may be, Danika also admittedly had a short temper. Though, considering she didn't laugh all that much, it was probably a poor analogy to use.

Despite her flaring emotions, she managed to lasso them in and force herself back to apathy. This was a girl she didn't know and probably wouldn't see again, so getting herself worked up over it was a waste of time. And, really, insulting people was the last thing she needed to be doing. She didn't need any enemies at school when she had enough to deal with elsewhere.

Her brows knit in self conflict, Danika looked the girl in the eyes, "I apologize for my sharp words, that was terrible of me."

Mili calmed down when she heard the apology. She wanted to snap back quickly at the girl, but now that she was sorry, there wasn't much point in it. Besides, she couldn't fault her for having a temper when Mili had one herself.

She supposed that she should give her an apology too, as hard as it might be to squeeze out. "I'm sorry I thought you didn't know where you were going; it was presumptuous of me." It almost hurt to say that, but Mili didn't really need to make any enemies, they kind of made themselves.

There was an uncomfortable pause, and a bit of tension in the air.

Mili broke the silence, "so, what was it you were laughing at?"

"Oh, I wasn't laughing. I'm lost." Danika was no liar, at least.

She sheepishly held forth her hands, still covered with a film of soil, "Well, I know where I'm at so not technically lost, but I seem unable to find a restroom."

Well, that wasn't awkward. Not at all.

She looked at her hands; was that dirt?

Maybe that's why she was in such a gruff mood. Mili knew she'd be fairly upset if she was dirty too. Cleanliness and personal hygiene were very important to her. Now she felt a little silly for getting defensive so quickly.

"The closest restroom is in that large building over there. Go in the front doors, and make a right. Then go to the end of the hall and and make a left, and they should be right there." Crystal Academy kind of tucked their restrooms away where they would be out of sight. The original architect must have thought it was "un-ladylike" to use the bathroom.

Knowing that it might be a bit hard to find, Mili offered to help, "would you like me to show you where it is?"

Glad that the main wave of tension seemed to have passed, Danika gave a relieved breath. So, that way, right, hall, left, or was it left, right? "If you don't have any prior engagments, I'd appreciate it."

She thought back to old magazine clippings she had read in the library, "A long time ago whenever there were pictures of a house, I remember the bathroom photo was at such an angle as to hide the toilet and sink as they were improper to show. I wonder if this was built on a similar concept."

Well, she did have a prior engagement, but it wasn't exactly a fun one. She could be late for it... Really, she was just going there to get scolded anyway, so what harm could it do to get in a little more trouble?

"Yeah, I can show you," Mili said as she shook her head up and down, and began walking toward the restrooms. "Crystal Academy is pretty old, so I'm sure it's the same thing. Kind of weird to think of considering how it is now. Try telling those Hillsworth boys that it's improper to talk about going to the bathroom." Mili had the tone in her voice that expressed that it was both disgusting yet a little funny at the same time. She didn't have the best sense of humor, but she tried.

When they got to the building, she held the door open for the other girl, so she didn't get dirt on it. "By the way, my name is Milla, but you can call me Mili."

Danika had, of course, heard of the Hillsworth school when she was investigating the online brochures for schools in the area with her father, however this was the first she had heard anything of its reputation.

"I don't know much of the students at Hillsworth. I heard it was an all-boys school so I thought it similar in nature to this one?" She inquired, curious over the venom in the other girl's voice. Was it really that bad? Perhaps their teachers didn't all have their PhDs yet.

"Ah, thank you Mili." Pleased to have finally met a faucet (unsurprisingly shiny with floral scented hand soap), Danika set about to scrubbing her hands clean.

"All boys school, yes," she replied, "Similar to to Crystal, no." Unsure of whether or not to inform her about the scuzziness of Hillsworth, Mili decided to pass on the topic for now. After all, she'd probably bump into some boys eventually and have time to make her own opinions about them. Not all of them were bad, just most of them. But in case she met a decent one (not likely), there was no reason to taint her view ahead of time.

She watched as the other girl washed her hands, and the water that flowed down the sink became a shade of brown from the dirt. Mili grabbed a piece of paper towel from the dispenser and handed it to her with a grin.

"Here," she said, as she gave the towel over, "I didn't catch your name".

Worried now that the Hillsworth school was something of a terror, she let her imagination play with it for a few seconds before mentally sighing and pushing it off in favor of reality. It was probably that the boys were either stuck up, rude, crass, or flirted too much. Or all of the above.

"Ah, pardon. I am Danika." She nodded, drying her hands on the towel. Even the towl, disposable though it may be, felt like it would have cost a lot.

Not wanting to fall into another awkward silence, Danika decided to try out the concept of idle chit chat, not looking up from the towel, "What classes have you had so far? Anything interesting?"
