Break time couldn't come soon enough, at least not for the weary Candidates who had been run into the ground nearly every day with the Hatching of the newest clutch so close, and as Leicha stretched his arms above his head he groaned under the strain of moving his muscles. The daily work was slowly taking its toll, coupled with fatigue, but the youth found that he'd been slowly getting used to the commotion that would happen around this time.
This wasn't his first Impression, after all, and it probably wouldn't be his last. He choked on that thought bitterly, his feelings a little mixed after more and more Candidates were brought in with each turn. Sure, the clutches always had a decent number of eggs, but they were always severely outnumbered.
Shaking his head to rid himself of such thoughts, unnecessary as they were so soon before the hatching, Leicha opted to take his break down in the lowers weyrs to see if he could maybe snag something quick to eat. He wasn't particularly hungry but having a full stomach now beat having an empty one later.

After a day full of the usual candidate drudgery, Rieta was wondering, not for the first time, if coming back to the Weyr was the right choice. Sure, the sight of the eggs had been enough to raise a brief flutter of excitement and hope in her heart, but everything she'd left behind felt almost haunted now. She belonged out on the fields, doing work that actually produced something. Seeing things grow under her tending was such a satisfying feeling, and sacking firestone just didn't cut it.
The areas around and about the kitchens were especially rife with memories, and Rieta was starting to think she might be better off not eating. Or sending someone else to snag food for her.
It was with these thoughts in mind that she spotted Leicha. Recognizing him as another candidate, though unsure of whether she remembered him from her childhood in the Weyr, she knew he could be, if nothing else, a distraction.
"Long day, huh?" She asked, in her usual enthusiastic tones, her voice just a little too loud to be at appropriate conversational level. "You think they're trying to weed out the weak ones before the hatching?"

Leicha seriously wondered if someone had placed a sign on his back recently and he wasn't aware of it; a sign that said 'why yes indeed, speak to me!' Where as before it would be at least a sevenday before anyone would go out of their way to speak to Leicha, two people had approached him within two days out of their own accord, both striking up conversations.
Please don't let me have saved this one either.
At her comment about weeding people out he found himself raises an eyebrow, wondering if this loud girl honestly meant what she was saying or was just too careless to consider it. Either way if she got snapped at for saying something so careless later on he didn't care, since it wasn't his problem. Still, he would have to respond to her.
"I'm used to this, and it's really only this harsh when there are eggs on the sand. If you're half as fit as you look, this is probably nothing for you to do in terms of laboring."
Leicha didn't really mean it as an insult, but she seemed to be better built then he was, not to mention tanned from obvious time past in the sun.

Rieta chuckled at the comment, rolling her shoulders and preening a bit. Yes, she was sturdy thank you very much. There'd be no weeding her out! Well, at least until the eggs hatched. They got to pick which candidates actually bloomed in to real live dragonriders and no amount of fitness was going to help on that front.
"It's good to know we can stand up to the punishment, hey?" Rieta was still chuckling as she reached out to offer Leicha an open palmed thump on the back. The sort that usually only seem comradely and friendly to the person doing the thumping. "I'm Rieta. And you're right. Farm work makes you tough enough for this sort of thing. But, shells, this stuff is dull."
"Still, the work needs to be done and who better than us to do it?" And that seemed to soothe her a bit, indeed she was beaming at her 'new friend' as if at peace with the world. "So, looking for a meal? Or just visiting someone?"

"Leicha."
And he did not appreciate the thump on the back. Not at all.
"I'm trying to pass time, actually. There's nothing for me to do during breaks and I don't really like to hang out in groups and socialize with the others, so I figure getting a snack wouldn't really put a damper on any of my plans."
He started to walk again, having paused when the girl addressed him, and he shrugged his shoulders to get the tight muscles a little looser.
"And you? What brings you down here instead of out in the sun?"

As Leicha explained his reasoning for being where they were, Rieta's expression took on a look of open disapproval and concern. It wasn't hard to read the girl, usually. At least not when it came to her feelings about things outside herself.
"You shouldn't do that." She scolded, as if she had the right. "I mean, you'll impress, or you won't. But either way it's going to be the rest of us who've been through it with you. If we don't have each other, what is there?"
She smiled then, as if she had the whole thing wrapped up. "But don't worry! I've been meeting a lot of the others. I can introduce you to the ones you don't know. You just need to give it a try."
Because she knew what was best for him, having met him minutes ago. Of course she did. And then, a frown. "Actually, I think I told someone earlier that I'd introduce her around. She's probably waiting for me!"
Sure. Or hiding. Definitely one of the two. "But I'll find you later. Don't worry about that."
((Wrapping early I know. But my brains in post impression mode now. Lets have them meet again, yes?))

"Take your time, it's not like I'm going anywhere."
Honestly Leicha didn't think he'd see this girl again, what with how sporadic and random her actions were, so it didn't hurt to say anything that may or may not bring her spirits up.
Still, she was a little different from the other girls he'd come across so far, so it couldn't be entirely that bad. Perhaps meeting up with her again wouldn't turn out to be too much trouble, as they would certainly see one another come time for the hatching.
"I'll see you around, I suppose."
Hopefully, this hatching would go off without a hitch too.
