Another day, the same old thing. Sure candidate lessons could be interesting, but not when he'd been through them for what, three turns now? It was the same lessons every turn. Well, mostly. Some of the questions that new candidates asked could be different and get some interesting answers, but not often. Nathail'd been counting down the minutes from his seat, itching to get out of there, and do SOMETHING.
The very minute they were released, he made his way out of the lower caverns as fast as his feet would carry him. Not to the kitchens today though, he was there yesterday and repeating it would be bad, and boring. No, something he hadn't done in a few days was snooping around the weyrbowl. Maybe there'd be some new candidates in there, or even better, a dragon rider and possibly a dragon or two to watch up close!

Indeed there was a rider down in the bowl, along with his ever sociable dragon Senoth. She was currently rolled over on her back sunning her belly as he scrubbed her down. With attention to detail and incredibly gentle hand, G'ail seemed more to be giving the green a massage then cleaning her.
That said, however, Senoth certainly wasn't complaining - she loved to be touched. <<G'ail, I'm itchy, can I turn back over yet?>> Her mental voice was soft and pleasant as he lifted her head to regard her rider.
He laughed and shook his head, "Soon, I'm almost done, spread your toes?" As he responded he ran a hand down her belly and patted the hide when she flared her back feet, making sure to clean the talons and pads of the foot before stepping back, "Better?"
<<Yes!>> She replied and whuffled audibly, rolling over only to shrug her shoulders,<<Scratch?>>
Shaking his head as he smiled, G'ail obligingly scratched her shoulders until she tossed her head and thanked him, tilting her head to nose his chest. Her eyes whirled blue and green and her thoughts were warm and fuzzy, echoed in the eyes of G'ail. Patting her cheek, he kissed her forehead, "Spread your wings okay? We're not yet."

He hadn't really expected to see an actual rider and dragon when he stepped out into the bowl, but there they were! Contenting himself to hang back and just watch, dragons were huge after all! Nathail takes in how very.. content the green looks. She certainly didn't seem as large and imposing as he figures all dragons should be.
But, standing there from a distance and being quiet is just so boring. A quick look around to make sure there's no one who might take offense to a candidate just walking up to a rider, and he starts walking that way. Slow though, better not look like a threat in case the calm looking dragon was aggressive at anyone getting near Hers.

The movement of someone drawing near caught the dragon's attention and the large green shifted, curiosity bubbling through the mental link between rider and dragon. <<There's someone there...>>
With his back facing the direction Senoth was looking, G'ail hadn't seen the other's approach and blinked, glancing over his shoulder. "Oh...? Oh!" He waved to the Candidate and continued rubbing the current section of Senoth's hide. Senoth, however, huffed and moved away, turning around so that she could face the newcomer.
Tossing her head she peered at Nathail from behind G'ail as if measuring him somehow, <<Is something wanted?>> The tilted of her head was curious as she shifted on her feet, <<Finish after, Mine...? Do not ignore the little one.>>
G'ail laughed and leaned back against his dragon, "I wasn't ignoring him. Need to take care you, you know, 'less you can reach back here yourself?" He arched a brow with a smile as Senoth snorted. To Nathail he nodded, "Greetings. You seem like you want something, as Senoth so astutely pointed out. Can I help you?"

Having those big, faceted eyes turn on him was, well, it was downright unnerving. No matter if they did look blue from this short distance away having a dragon look at you was pretty intimidating. The wave was at least enough to cut down that though. At least the rider did seem cheery enough, and now that his presence was known, might as well go over now, right? Right.
Nathail stops a few feet from the dragon and rider pair and lets the question roll over him before it actually registers. "Want? Huh, oh, no I didn't want anything. I was just coming to the bowl for something to do." Something not-routine. "Your dragon is Senoth? She's a lovely shade of green." There, first lessons remembered. Flattery with dragons was never ever a bad idea.

Senoth shook her head and whuffled with appreciation, a slight smile play across her snout, <<I like this one. They speak well.>>
G'ail laughed and eyed the boy, "You've made a friend. She likes you. Though too much flattery and I'm afraid she might start following you around."
<<Mine! I would not do that! You are Mine, not that one.>> She replied quickly, shifting her gaze to focus entirely on G'ail, <<Do not jest!>>
G'ail smiled and returned the gaze, winking, "I know. You're still a proud one, though, Senoth." She ruffled her wings then and nodded, settling down onto her stomach as she spread said wings so she could sun while the two human talked.
"Something to do... hmn? I suppose if you're out here, you're not in the middle of candidate lessons then." Pausing, the rider considered for a moment before arching a brow, "How about you learn about dragons? I know you're learning the ropes but it's all theoretical until you actually know things. Senoth, do you feel like teaching today?"
<<Teaching?>> She blinked, eyes whirling in curiosity, shifting from G'ail to Nathail, <<I can teach the boy.>
"Excellent, thank-you." He gestured to Nathail, "C'mere. I'm G'ail. You should introduce yourself. Part of caring for your dragon is maintaining a healthy hide. For the most part they can take of it themselves but dragonets grow fast and even adults need the occasional thorough rub down."

A grin for the dragon and he relaxes his posture quite a bit. That was as friendly a sound as he'd ever heard from any dragon. "Better a friend than an enemy though. I wouldn't want to get stepped on or anything."
Nathail can't help it though, he grimaces just a bit at the mention of candidate lessons. "I've had those lessons for three turns, they never change them." Of course, the look is wiped away completely at the proposition. "A dragon is going to teach?" Wow, that wasn't anything he'd heard before.
"Nathail." He nods a bit. "They mention that in the lessons, but not really in any detail, it's for Weyrlings to learn, I guess." He steps closer though as instructed.

G'ail smirked and tilted his head, "I stood at Hatchings for nearly six years before Senoth graced me with her presence. The lessons may seem redundant after a while but really, practice makes perfect right? Don't lose heart Nathail, it's valuable information in the long run regardless." He glanced at Senoth, "By teach I mean she's going to lay there doing nothing while you learn how to care for a dragon's hide hands-on."
Senoth rumbled as if laughing and lolled her head to the side, blinking invitingly at Nathail.
G'ail smiled, "She won't bite. She's already given you permission. I was cleaning her back so where do you think you should stand? The scrubber's on the ground there."

"It might all be good practice, but hearing the same exact lessons every turn is so boring! If they changed them, even a little, it would be something different at least." Clearly, Nathail just wasn't one to take being bored. Sitting down, or standing up.
He looks a good bit skeptical though. "Are you sure about this?"

G'ail shrugged, "Like I said don't lose heart and keep at it. If you leave you won't Stand though so that's up to you. It depends on how devoted you are to your goals." He glanced at Senoth and sent Help me out here! He's bawking.
<<No, he's just uncertain.>> She sent back with a lazy thump of tail, looking for all the world like a giant, green scaly cat. However, she did help out - in a way - and extended her neck so that her head was about even with the boy's chest and snorted, the instruction easy enough to surmise.
"Most dragons are picky about who touches them but Senoth's a socialite. She doesn't mind someone else touching her - so long as they have her permission." He stepped closer to run a hand over her brow. "And you have her permission".
The statement was supported by the distinctive nod of her head even though her eyes were closed, enjoying the attention her Rider lavished upon her. "Might as well get used to being near a dragon right?"

"I didn't say I would leave, just the lessons are boring. Always the same." Nathail frowns just a bit before shrugging it off. Easily misunderstood. He nearly takes a step, or two backwards as Senoth leans her large head closer.
Still leery of the, to him, huge dragon so close, Nathail raises a hand to touch the tip of Senoth's nose. Reassured that she doesn't snap at him, regardless of the fact they they were all taught that dragons didn't attack humans, Nathail risks a couple light pats. Looking up to G'ail he nods again. "I guess you're right. But if I ever did Impress, it wouldn't be to such a large dragon, they at least start out nice and small to get used to." For that, he grins.

Senoth whirred at that and bobbed her head, smiling at the other's tentative touch. "Yeah, like that. Don't have to treat her like glass but I'll also have your hide if you're rough." G'ail replied easily though the serious tone in his voice was enough to ward off any wayward thoughts. He was a protective one, at his core, and very loyal to the green.
"True, but dragonets grow fast. You know greens are the smallest but what happens if you Impress a Blue, Brown, or Bronze? They're much larger then even Senoth here."
<<I'm as big as a Blue, Mine. Remember?>> She interjected with a touch of pride, opening the eye closest to him.
He nodded at that with a chuckle, "Though yes, she's as large as a small Blue. Lucky I am, to have her. Now, grab the scrubber and come over here." He moved over to behind the join of wing membrane to body and set his hand on her hip. "How far can you reach?"

Pulling his hand back, Nathail looks up at him nearly offended. "I'd never hurt a dragon." To think that it had almost been hinted at, in a warning or not, was.. he wasn't new to being a candidate and seeing dragons.
"But they start small. That's all the difference you need. I've seen the angry hatchings, if they were the size of a full grown dragon charging through everybody..." he grimaces at the sheer thought of being trampled by that size claws. Shaking it off before he has the chance to create some nightmare material, he nods again.
"Well, Senoth is still the biggest dragon I've seen up close." The day he was Searched couldn't count, every dragon was huge then! He grabs the scrubber as instructed, before giving light frown. "Pretty far, I guess. Don't have long arms though."

The smile on G'ail's face made it clear that while he was not jesting, he was simply being protective. Senoth was the best thing in his life and any thought of harm, emotional or otherwise, coming to her made his blood boil. She was his as much and he was Hers.
"An adult dragon would never hurt a human." He replied easily, "They will never deliberately harm a rider or anyone else and even then I can only assume the poor dragon would be so hurt and mentally wounded that they'd go Between before hurting another. It's not something you need to worry about." G'ail shrugged, "As much as the hatchings are about new life and new riders it's also a trial of sorts - the first time I stood, was lucky to keep my vision. An overeager, impatient bronze barelled through my part of line and tore up my face. That's why I have these scars."
<<And I still don't like that bronze for doing that to you, Mine. No one should hurt you, at any time.>> She looked back, whuffling with concern, <<I think you are a handsome one, Mine. And so do others.>>
G'ail shot her a look and arched a brow. That... was both a good thing and bad thing. Senoth liked to rise when she thought someone had taken a fancy to her rider, even if her rider was unaware or not particularly interested. In matters of love, Senoth would rarely listen to her rider and instead encourage him to seek out company.
He rather hoped she wasn't going to Rise soon - there was so much to do and it was particularly difficult to concentrate when your dragon had other things on her mind.
When Nathail asked his question, G'ail returned his gaze to the young man and nodded, "Perhaps. I"m glad you think so. As for the scrubbing, just scrub like you're washing dishes - but not too hard. If you can't reach somewhere, ask Senoth to move a little for you and she's not asleep she'll move." He grinned - more then once his dragon had fallen asleep while he'd been caring for her.

"They tell us that much in lessons, but it doesn't make the prospect of being trampled any easier to stomache.." And really it didn't. Three turns was enough to show him the damage even a baby's claws could do. Definitely not fun. "But I didn't say adults either. I meant the trampling would be worse if they came out of their shells any bigger than they do. Probably." He spares a small frown at how G'ail got his scars. Well, at least he'd been lucky so far to only have been knocked down by other candidates hurrying out of the way.
"Something wrong?" Such an odd look that rider just gave his dragon. Eh...maybe best to not ask and ignore it, private conversations right? He eyes the scrubber in hand one more time, before nodding his understanding. "She's fallen asleep before while you scrubbed her?"
