There really was no job more suitable for Charys Murphy than video store jockey -- well, that wasn't quite true. There was no job more suitable for Charys Murphy than unemployment. Charys moved only the amount required not to get bedsores; she was not cut out for retail or heavy lifting. She did not have the dogged concentration required to deliver mail. She could not deliver Service With A Smile.

But at Video Buster -- that was fine. On weekday afternoons hardly anyone came to get videos, so you could bust out whatever vid you wanted and watch it at the desk; Charys made sure to do this assiduously. She had already been through every single Barbie film. She sat there chewing gum and flicking through the shiny jewel-bright cases of DVDs, leaning back in her chair with her legs up on the counter, unimpeachable and bulletproof (she knew that the manager was having an affair with the other DVD pusher: her paycheck was secure).

It was a fine, summery afternoon. Her homework was undone, waiting in her knapsack. She barely noticed when the beeper for the door rang: she was too busy being ensconced in All Dogs Go To Heaven for the ninety billionth time.

But something about the entrant intrigued her; something nagging at the back of her mind. She followed the inky-dark head with its heavy bun of black hair and the very white, white-burning skin, and nonchalantly stuck her hands in her pockets (she'd tied her Video Buster shirt in a knot just below her bustline; the things were tragically unsexy otherwise). The girl was a junior; Charys wasn't the type to pay attention to juniors, but it was hard when this particular one was tragically pale, crimson-eyed and ebon-haired as any vampire wannabe could hope to be. A black choker encircled the slim throat. Couldn't remember the name for the life of her, natch -- again, she was a senior: what knowledge she knew was restricted to the current cost of a Coke from the machine (a dollar twenty).

She leant against the rack of DVDs when she saw the section the girl was browsing, and popped her gum once for emphasis. "We just got in Bloodtorture III," she said. "If you were looking for something kinda psychological."

Ume glanced up from the racks at the sound of the popping gum, its loud well chewed 'snap' breaking the general ambiance of the video store, whom smelled vaguely of stale candy and fake butter.
She rested a finger on top of one of the DVD's she'd been pondering 'The Eye' - in its original Korean, she'd seen it -before-, should -really- just buy it, but hadn't pulled the trigger just yet. She rocked it back and forth to tap its back against the wall of the display considering the recommendation.
"Hmm... Psychological as in 'They printed it on the back to cover up gratuitous nudity and corn syrup? Orrrrrr..." She trailed out the word with another few taps of the case against the ply-wood. "Psychological as in watched it and your actually -thinking- about the movie and what shock they used is actually poised for maximum effect rather than shock with at least a -demi- surprise ending?"
She let the case fall back with a final clack trying to place the girl. That -hair- was familiar, and the nose ring, which she found adorable though she'd never get one.
But that -hair-, lovely blue, oh! ...one of the Senior class...wasn't it? What -was- her name.
She shifted to perch on the toes of her boots for a moment before resettling. She felt somehow that this proved she wasn't just being a 'b***h' about the recommendation... then added.
"Last...time I took a recommendation from that... other girl" She curled her lip remembering the so called 'horror' film that had done little but put her to -sleep- and, for a film that proposed to revolve around a mortuary showed such -grossly- misleading procedures by what was supposed to be a 'legitimate professional' that they themselves might have been the horror show.

"And, it was... awful, not even a -good- awful"

"Okay. Well." The gum was popped again. "Obviously you know your stuff. I was bullshitting. It's about as psychological as watching paint dry. Howeever." She switched lounging positions. "If you like a bunch of pretty honestly good scare moments, and I do, it's seriously not bad. It's not a complete slasher. I mean, I'm not that hot for the gorn."

Charys started shifting through the DVDs. "You were probably talking to Kylie," she said. "Kylie kind of wouldn't know horror if it bit her in the a**. Sorry. So. Lemme make you a rec."

She pulled out a DVD and handed it to the pretty dark-haired girl. "'Sweet Home'. Japanese. 1980s. Juzo Itami? This will rock you. No kidding. I only pull this one out if I..." She leant forward dangled it in front of Ume's face. "... think you can take it."

She paused. She was close enough to smell the younger girl's lip gloss. "Sorry," she said, not moving. "I'm being kind of lez at you, I'm going through a phase. Hi."

Ume flashed a wide smile, clearly against any 'Goth Code' and tapped the toes of her boots together still grinning.

"Hi <3" She said and you could hear the small smile in her voice, a little nervous, but not scared, or backing up. quite confidant and a little playful.

"I think I can take it. The phase...and the movie she winked" She beamed and tucked her hair behind her ear to take the case and glance at the back, mouthing the director's name quietly... "Juzo...Itami..." her head bowing forward to read brushed bangs against Charys'
"His name sounds familiar, but I can't think of a title." She reached up an idle hand to brush at her lightly glossed lips and rubbed at the waxy shine, grape...and just a -hint- of sandalwood, maybe rose lingering underneath but so subtle that the lipgloss wasn't lost either.
"It's better than Acadia yes?" She reached and pulled at a red box with a chalk faced child plastered on the front. "I liked the 'Strings of fate' being added in with the yarn but..." she made a small distressed sound, it was so predictable, and base line shock value with the ants." She shook her head.

Hmm...She tilted her head and glanced up with a small smile. "I'll defiantly...take your recommendation, but... only if you take one of mine? Since -clearly- you enjoy the genre -and- from the sound your not into the cheep -shock- value that's favored at school?"
She rocked on her heels and swayed off balance -just- for a moment as the heel of one boot bent, revealing a cheep origin to its glossy black finish, She recovered like she'd done it on purpose, and offered a hand with a fingerless lacy black glove. "I know you to see you, school, senior... cute nose ring... but, I'm afraid I can't remember your name! I'm Ume!" she said beaming.

"You're pretty perky for someone who's... completely grade-A baby bat goth," said Charys.

She took her hand and held it, not shaking it; she instead squeezed her fingers before dropping them. "Yeah, definitely kind of gay. 'Sup. Murphy -- Charys Murphy. Call me... Charys Murphy. Damn, I'm slick."

Charys leant back. "Juzo Itami did heaps of stuff -- you ever heard of Tampopo? Tampopo is ********' hilarious -- lemme know when you want it, it's R-18 but I'll just pretend you're twenty-one if you don't squeal."

She was cute. She really was cute. Unfortunately, she wasn't Sidra, and Charys was starting to learn that her world was revolving around her being a grade-A ***** for Sidra Winters. There had once been a time where she had not been a *****, and definitely not a ***** for Sid Winters. "Hit me, Ume," she said. She kind of drawled out the name -- Ooh-me -- a little laughingly. "If I haven't seen it, I'll make your DVD on the house, okay?"

Ume laughed

"I...prefer gothic Lolita actually, we're -allowed- to do things like.." she tilted her head conspiratorially "Smile..."
Hmm... "And it's a deal!" She nodded and tapped her chin, there had to be one -not- found here on the shelf. Something the girl -might- not have seen.

She made a small tisk sound... or maybe one that was just, not as well known.

"Premonition - Hiroshi Mikami" She said tilting her chin up. "It's -not- here on the shelf BUT... I'll lend it to you, if you promise not to take it if you like it!" She nodded with a satisfied smile.

She was enjoying this quite a lot, quite unexpected after the -last- trip to the store, -and- so many new titles she'd have to add to her weekend list!

"Damn," said Charys. "Okay. You win. Free DVD."

Gothic lolita. Like the 'Lolita' part hadn't had to be hammered into her psyche. Here was Ume looking like she'd just walked off the shelf of a creepy anime nerd's black lace dating simulator, and Sid -- well, Sid always had her hair up in those long damn pigtails, it made her feel like the police were about to come any moment and take her away to pokey.

"Wow, your hair must be a**-length," she said, apopos of nothing, and worked another piece of gum out to pop into her mouth -- she offered the packet to Ume. "So. Gothic lolita. You... watch horror movies and wear tiny skirts? It's not just hanging around in a sewer wearing a swishy cape and reading vampire books?"
PostPosted: Tue Oct 06, 2009 2:12 am

"YAY!" Ume cheered and did a little victory pose bouncing a little up and down on the toes of her boots again. "It's really good I promise!" She added beaming brightly, and then let out a peal of laughter at the comment about her hair.

"I guess so!" She admitted, "I almost always put it up so it won't be in my face, but your right! I'd probably sit on it if part of it wasn't up." She reached back almost unconsciously to tap at one of the hair pins that held the bun in place and then shook her head still smiling at the offer of gum before blushing and glancing down at her skirt.
"it's not -that- small, no worse than school!" she plucked at the hem revealing an extra layer of lace underneath. "Except for that girl who thinks rolling hers up shows more leg" She rolled her eyes remembering the 'roll' around the girls middle.
"And No sewers" She grinned, "I'll leave that to the people still -thinking- their vampires, and yes -some- vampire books, but... actually the whole Lolita thing was based off some old book by a frenchman, Older man falls in love with a very young girl during the romantic period. If you think about it -too- hard its a little ***** because it's all into 'darkly cute' but...I like it! And love is where you find it right?" She smiled and tilted her head.

"What about you? Other than, horror movies what do you like?"

Charys had already lifted the Sweet Home DVD and taken it back to the counter, idly swiping it through her own card to get the freebie bonus. She twiddled one of the earrings at her ear as it went through, apparently a habit.

"Me," she said. "What do I like. Giving people free DVD rentals, apparently. Wow, they should put me in line for sainthood." The DVD made a little ding! as she cleared it with the scanner. "I like movies. I like Tuesdays." It was pretty obvious she was just rattling off whatever was closest to hand, it being a Tuesday and her being surrounded by films. "I like... Hey. Ume. What year are you in?"

This was a divergence.

"You know Sidra Winters? Small, likes shoeing orphans. Brown hair." (Like that helped.)
PostPosted: Tue Oct 06, 2009 7:02 am

A pause listening to the semi evasive prattle and then her smile turned -just- a little but clever, just a little bit like a cat with the cream, or at the -very- least close to it.
"Mmm... not personally, yet...do you?" She leaned into the counter smiling at the girl.
Did she like movies, Tuesdays and miss Winters? She -had- said after all, at the start that she was in a 'phase'.
"I'm sure I can make an acquaintance, is she a Junior?" She said

"Yep, ought to be," said Charys unconcernedly. "Same age as you, I guess. Might not be quite your style. You being -- gothique lo-li-ta -- she being, cardigans and Youthline."

There was a strange, faint smile on Charys' face though, as though cardigans and Youthline weren't that out of the question. But then she popped another piece of gum into her mouth. Charys always smelled strongly of Juicy Fruit. The DVD was slid over in Ume's direction, where Charys' fingertips met her own through her fingerless little lace gloves. "Do you always flirt with video store clerks, or is it just part of the gothic lolita mystique?"

She added freely, "Gotta answer, no takebacks."
PostPosted: Wed Oct 07, 2009 7:34 am

Ume's eyes sparked with amusement at the question.
"Totaly, part part of the mystique." She grinned.
Wheels turning in the back of her head about that look that had appeared in Charys' eye for a moment.

"But.. at risk of destroying the mystique, if this is any good I'll be a repeat customer." She laughed "And mayyyybe... maybe I'll have to see about meeting Miss Winters, to try and permeate the mystique of, pretty video store clerks whom actually -watch- the genre they push." She winked. and slid her hands away slowly. "Or at lest to bring them news?"
Not so much an escape as a tease of sorts, just a hint of wicked smile but no so wicked that she wouldn't stop if she was asked.

"Don't forget!" She added "Premonition!"

At this, Charys finally laughed; leant forward with her elbows on the counter, waving a little idly at Ume as she backed away with the DVD and started heading towards the exit. "Yep," she said. "Premonition. Come into the senior lounge sometime, I'll be there. -- Have fun with the flick. You'll be back."

Sidra would probably wrinkle up her nose and disapprove of Ume. She could feel it in her bones. They shared a wink, Charys waved again, and gave another one of the lazy little finger waves. Then Ume was gone.

Oh, well. If she was going to be all crazy lesbian at least she could be pretty pimp about it.
