User ImageThe borders. She was drawn to them as some of her family was before her. Thoughts of leaving this pride circled her head a lot these days. Some of the ways of the pride made no sense to the orange female. In thought, her ears flattened and a sigh escaped her lips. She stepped out into the unknown beyond the border, 'round a bolder to where she knew a small waterfall was. She often went there to clear her mind and think.

Stepping upon a familiar rock, the awkward looking lioness settled her weight to cross the stream before she got to the biggest rock in the middle and just sat there for a while, looking at the water, to the fish just beneath the surface. The colorful fish. Gender or color didn't matter to them. Fish didn't segregate themselves because of stupid things like her pride did. That's why she often thought of leaving.

A little sigh escaped again, not audible over the rushing of the stream. Either way, she would leave when she felt the moment was right; which wasn't now. Her sister, Mawu's mate just left her, leaving Mawu to raise those cubs. The only Gasht in the family, Kim'acha, was being raised by Koi and Liza these days; which meant less time for them to spend with their daughter. Not like Aekea needed the attention. She never did like the spotlight from the pride.

Days dragged on and on as the male ventured out of the pride. A younger, more fit lion would be doing a better job. He was older and his paws ocassionally ached with arthritis. It didn't matter. He had set his mission and he would complete it. They needed new blood in their pride. New faces and younger hearts to keep it thriving.

More then anything he needed listeners. He had so many stories and no one to tell them to. No one to teach and that made his old heart very lonely. Even more now that he was walking the hot savanah without anyone to call friend or even foe.

He had thought this would be an adventure and would ease is aching bones and aching heart but it was just the start, he reminded himself as he walked. He hadn't even found anyone yet.

His ears swiveled as he caught the sound of loud rushing water. He could use a drink and perhaps a bath would sooth his right paw. It was always the worst one. He huffed a slight bit as he made his to the water. He sank into it. Unaware of the youth until he was almost right next to her rock. He glanced up his tired red eyes giving her a soft look.

There was a small pause before a smile that touched his eyes went over his face. "Ah... I'm sorry, have I intruded?" He questioned moving away just a bit. "I apologize."

Turning her head to the voice, Aekea blinked and shifted to actually sit on the rock instead of lay. It was rude to lay down when others were addressing you. The other, she came to find out, was a very handsome male who was way older than her, but... he already had a certain charm to him despite him only speaking a few words.

"N-no... Y-yo-you didn't-t-t..." She said, cursing her natural stutter she developed from her father. She took a couple of deep breaths to calm herself down, wanting to speak clearer for this other. After all, he didn't have to be respectful towards her. He was obviously not of her pride and that made her a bit more peppy. "P.... P... Please... C-continue... what-t you... were doing." Which was.... she didn't really know. She didn't even know he'd been there until he spoke.

The times the other had on intrigued her to no end. She wanted to know about them; about him, where he came from. He had a different feel to him, like he wasn't suppressed. Maybe he came from a pride that treated females as equals and not betters! The questions she wanted to ask, but she was so afraid at the same time.

The youth's stutter didn't put him off. He smiled at her and sank into the water, regarding her with interest. She smelled as if she'd come from a pride. Holding the scents of multiple lions on her coat. "I thank you. I'm merely relaxing. My poor paws have all but given in on me. Could you perhaps tell me where I am? I've not been out of my pride before so this is all rather new to me."

He yawned and settled himself down to start cleaning himself, giving his feet a nice rest. "Ah how rude of me..." He said after a moment, "I didn't introduce myself. My name is Kafele. I'm from a pride far to the west."

He didn't know where he was? "You...you're n-n-near... the K-K-Kunanda'Nak-k-khun.." She replied, trying to be helpful. Her tail flicked, tip of it sinking into the water, hanging off her rock. The purple flower behind her ear blew in the breeze that always seemed to be present at this place. Shuffling a bit more, Aekea didn't know what else to do than sit here and watch the male apparently cool himself off.

Oh! An introduction would be good right about now before they started talking about other things that might come up. "M-my.... n-n-name is Aek-k-ke...Aekea.." She sighed as she said her name, clearly embarrassed and annoyed at her stutter. She couldn't even get out her name without the stupid thing. Muttering under her breath, those violet eyes darted downward before flicking her eyes back up to the stranger. My, he was a handsome one! For an older lion, that was. But the younger of her pride, those her age never interested Aekea. It was so odd to her.

"W-why.... why lea-v-v-ve your p-p-pride?"

"Kunanda'Nakkhun...." He repeated in a soft voice, rolling it off his tongue like something foreign. It didn't help him with his location but at least he knew the pride he was close to. That was well enough. He could go from there.

He lifted his eyebrows before smiling. "Aekea. That's a very lovely name." He wished he could ease her. She seemed upset about her stutter. He rather liked it. He'd never heard such a thinng before.

"Hm?" He questioned then lifted himself up in a way that suggested he was a bit stiff. "Oh I left to find others to join. Our pride is small and I believe we could do with some new hearts to keep it beating. I'd never left before so I volunteered to find such hearts. I'm a tad far from home but I know the way back." He paused for a moment. "And of your pride? You are outside the boarders, aren't you?"

So he was looking for new members to his pride? That was very amicable. Aekea flashed a brilliant smile as he rose, and she shifted down into the river and waded to get to the other. She examined the accessories in his hair and then gave him a curious look. He was very .... she didn't know the word. The more they talked, the more she wanted to know about him.

"A-ah... Y-y-yeah. I-I don't-t.... l-like my pride m-m-much..." She murmured softly, looking down as if she'd said something taboo. Aekea had, of course, said something taboo. One was never to speak ill of their pride. "T-the-they.... don't-t l-l-like... e-equality. T-Treat m-males.... They treat..." She growled again at her stutter and took a deep breath tried to count to ten. That was something her father taught her to do when she got upset.

"They treat males.... s-so b-b-bad.." Now, that wasn't that bad, that sentence. Tail flicking in the water, she padded towards the shore and shook herself free of water, or attempted too. Of course she still stayed a bit damp.

He couldn't help but return the smile. When she came closer to him he laid down again so she could better get a view of his mane and its lovely beads and his shell. That one was his prize. He had fallen in love with its color and the soft waves it came from.

He blinked in surprise. "You don't?" He asked once she had managed to get the words out. He look equally shocked at the next bit of information. "They... treat males poorly? For heaven's sakes, why? Is there a reason?"

He trailed after her and shook out his own fur before sticking near her. The poor youth sounded troubled. She could probably use a friend. "It sounds terribly unjust. We treat all animals equally in our pride."

"S-s-some.... some s-see th-them f-for only b-b-breeding. T-they're.... O-Our pride...." She shook her head and then licked at her muzzle. Aekea couldn't believe there was a pride that treated everyone with equality. That was like her dream come true. The lioness liked it when he talked. He had such a smooth voice that washed over her and made her want to picture what he was talking about.

Ears flicking a bit, she sat down on the ground and watched him, head tilting to the side. "W-why... don't... don't you l-lay down....? I-It might.... might-t help..."

"Only for breeding? How terrible. I hope we have a little more purpose then that!" He say with a deep warm laugh that shook his entire body. "Well, I have never heard of such a thing. Not in my wildest stories..." He shook his head. A shame. Why would any male put themselves through that?

He obliged her, flopping down on the ground heavily. He let out a massive yawn, reveal his long well used fangs and a small stretch. "So tell me, child. If you don't want to be here then... well have you ever considered leaving? Honestly it sounds like you really hate it. I mean eventually you should go. Run to where your heart takes you."

How could they treat males like that, indeed. She watched his reaction and smiled a bit. So he felt the same as she did; that was a really good thing! At least, in Aekea's opinion. When he flopped down, she couldn't help but let out a soft laugh. He was older, but he didn't look it, not really. He still talked like a younger cub.

Leaving? Yes, she considered that all the time. "I...I d-d-do consider... it-t-t. T-think.... ab-b-bout it all t-t-the t-t-time..." She admitted, feeling pretty low about that. Her ears folded against her head, hiding in that black tuft on top of her head that was almost in her eyes.

He began to clean his paws, a wise eye still on the child. He was glad to see her smile. It seemed this pride was just not her type of meat. He shifted so that he was halfway on his side so he could watch her.

"Oh? Well... I'm not saying its a good thing to run away from your parents. But... if you so desire... You can come with me. I'm sure our pride would welcome you with open arms. If you'd like."

Aekea blinked at the offer and bit down on her bottom lip. To leave sounded so wonderful. Her black tuft on her tail twitched a bit with little effort from her muscles and her smile widened. Well, he just knew the right words to say to her, didn't he? With a little laugh, she nodded a bit. "I-I-I'd love to g-g-go with you. ..B-.But not t-today? ....-I-I-I'd have t-to say bye to m-m-my family a-and everything. ....W-Will you.... c-come to-tomorrow?

He seemed pleasantly surprised. She was willing to come with him. Good, she could us a proper environment to learn in. "Well of course I wouldn't expect you to leave without saying a proper goodbye... but they may... try to hold you back. I will be here tomorrow.... and if you need me to stand with you when you say your goodbyes I will."

He wouldn't let a little girl face that alone.

It touched her to know that this almost complete stranger would help her talk to her parents and siblings, but she couldn't bring him into the pride. He'd have absolutely no opinion in her pride. Shaking her head gently, Aekea gave him a small, unsure smile. "T-this... is-s-s someth-thing I have to d-d-do al-l-lone...." She said after a moment Purple eyes glancing about before settling on the male's face again.
