Crescent by Ashley H.
1. New
My dad drove me and my three brothers to the airport. I rolled down the window, knowing this would be the last time I would get to do that. It was ninety-eight degrees here in Miami, Florida, and I would miss it. We were all moving to a little town named Crescent that was located in Washington. I had on a long sleeved shirt and jeans, and I was dying of heat. But I’d be glad I had these on when we arrived. Crescent, Washington was always under clouds, the sun rarely came out, and was always in the mid fifties or low sixties. If we were lucky, the temperature would make it the seventies.
I was sitting in the front, with my dad, while my older brothers were sitting in the middle, and my younger brother sitting in the very back. Mosiah and Chase- the older twins- were fine with moving, my younger brother, Austin, was excited, and I was bummed. I love the nice sunny weather, the cloudless sky, and the warm beaches, so I had a pretty good idea on how much I’d hate the cold and the non stop rain.
“Will you cheer up Jaymie?” My dad asked when he looked over at me. I had my elbow resting in the window frame, and my chin in my hand, with a sour expression on my face.
I looked over at him, from out of the corner of my eye, and I never quite got over the fact that I didn’t look anything like my dad, or my three brothers. They all had light brown hair with brown eyes. But I looked exactly like my mom. My hair had the same texture and color. It looked like a river of black silk flowing down my back. And my eyes were just as bright and dark as her’s too. The same dark emerald green.
“Dad, I hate moving, I absolutely despise moving, even if we move to a different house in the same school district. But moving across the U.S. and away from all my friends will not make me happy.” I’ve said this over million times it seems, but no matter how many more times I say it, he’ll keep asking me to cheer up, or to at least act like I’m happy.
“Who knows, maybe you’ll like there.” He shrugged and looked at me again; his dark brown eyes were full of hope. He kept on driving, and none of us said anything else from that point on.
After about another thirty minuets we made it to the airport. Going through the lines was another good two and a half hours. Once we were finally seated on the plane, I looked around to see where everyone else was located. Mosiah was sitting by the window, a few rows behind me and over. Austin was in the middle seat and Chase was next to him. My dad sat in the aisle seat a few rows in front of me. I got put next to the window, and was happy for that. I waited to see you was going to sit next to me, and it ended being a teenage couple. The girl sat next to me. She was average height, and had bleach blond hair. I couldn’t see what color her eyes were. The boy had light brown hair, almost blond himself, and light brown eyes. Just seeing him and her made me wish I was back home with my friends.
I leaned my head against the window and stayed there for almost two hours, and switched positions for the next three hours. Once the plane landed and stood up and stretched. My arms and legs were stiff from the flight. I met up with the guys right at the airplane’s doors.
My dad put his hand on my back as we walked over to the luggage carousel. We grabbed out suitcases and headed for the main exit. Like I said before, Washington was too cold for my liking, and we weren’t even a little town. No, we were only in Seattle. We still had a two and a half hour drive from here, but at least I’d be in the front again, instead of sitting with my obnoxious brothers.
Turns out I didn’t get to sit in the front, but next to Austin. My dad’s old friend, who also lives in Crescent, arranged to drive us there. His name was Jeff Mayes. His daughter, Nicolette, sat next to me. My dad said that we had only met once or twice before, but I don’t remember a thing about her, and apparently neither did she. Nicolette’s brother, Devon, stayed home, which was good because the car was filled with no other seat.
Nicolette and I didn’t talk much, though I did find out she goes by Nikki, and we are the same age and in the same grade. We were both juniors, and she said she would show me around school. It seemed to me that me and Nikki would become great friends.
Chase and Austin fell asleep, leaving Mosiah, my dad, Jon, Nikki, and me. I was surprised that I didn’t fall asleep, I was exhausted from the flight. No one talked, and neither Jon or my dad moved to turn on the radio.
I looked out of Austin’s window. I had to admit, it was very beautiful here. The tree’s leaves were a rich green, and the trunks were dark brown. Most of them had green-yellow moss growing on the sides of the trees. There was a weird glow outside. It was bright outside, but the sun wasn’t shining. It was from the sun shinning on the clouds. Either way, it was pretty here.
The two hours in the van went quickly, and soon Chase and Austin had to be woken up to get our stuff out of the Mayes’s van and to finally step in to our new home. I could barely seen anything, it was getting dark, and there were hardly any lights around.
We all waved goodbye to Jon and Nikki, and told them to say hi to Devon for us. Jon nodded and backed out and the back lights faded to nothing.
“Alright, lets get inside before it starts raining. And before anyone starts fighting over rooms, oldest goes first after ladies.” Chase turned to me and scowled. I stuck my tongue out at him as I grabbed my suitcase and walked up the narrow concrete path to the front door. My dad walked in first, since he had the key, and I was second, followed by Austin and the twins.
“Everyone stays down here until Jaymie picks her room, got it?” He asked, looking at the boys, and I walked to the stairs. Once up the stairs, I walked around. Looking at every room.
I looked in every room upstairs, and I noticed the twins would have to share a room again. There were only three rooms and one bathroom. A bedroom for me, which I chose, would be looking out over the front yard, and bedroom for Austin and another bedroom for the twins.
"I'm done!" I called downstairs, and I could hear Mosiah and Chase running up the stairs. "Idiots." I grumbled and shut the door. I flipped on the light and looked around. The room was painted a light blue, the bed was a full sized bed with a dark brown comforter laying neatly over it. The bed I had back home was too big for me. I set my bag down and went to the window. There was hardly any lights, which made it difficult to see.
Was that a shadow? I could feel my eyes grow wide in shock and fear. Oh come on, Jaymie! Wake up! This little ol' town isn't bad in crime rates as it was in Miami! Sheesh! I told myself over and over again to calm myself down.
"Jaymie?" My dad's voice made me jump, and I had to cover my own mouth to stop from screaming. I took a deep breath and fell backwards on my bed.
"Yea dad?" I asked as he poked his head in. I sat up again and moved aside to make room for him. He closed the door behind him and came and sat on the edge of the bed. I glanced towards the window once and looked back at him.
"Are you going to be happy here at all?" He asked me. His expression looked worried and I had to smile to get him to lighten up.
"Probably. Just give it some time." I lied. Sooner or later I'd have to pretend to like it, even if I didn't. I gave him a small hug and stood up and pretended to be focused on unpacking my clothes.
He left the room and as soon as I couldn't his footsteps any more I walked back over the window. I couldn't stop thinking about the shadow I saw. I was pretty sure it wasn't my imagination, and this wasn't going to just disappear until I figure out what it was.
I decided to give up tonight and hurried up to put my clothes away, though it was all sloppy. I brushed my teeth in the only bathroom upstairs. It had light yellow walls and white cabinets. The tub and sink were porcelain white, and the floor was tiled. All together, it looked nice.
After I was done in the bathroom I turned off the lights and headed back to my room to change. I got comfortable in my old black sweatpants and a short sleeved blue shirt with printed stars on it. I crawled in to the bed and got comfortable after setting my alarm on my phone. I fell asleep quickly, though I never got in to a deep sleep for a felt someone in the room with me.
My alarm went off at five thirty, and I went in and took a shower. The feeling of someone never left me, not even in the bathroom. I thought about other things, like how I was going to get to school and home. Or what the school would look like.
I walked back to my room with a towel wrapped around me. I put on a pair of ripped jeans on a long sleeved grey shirt. I put my hair in to a tight braid and put on my necklace my mom gave me before she passed away.
My worries about getting to and from school were over since I heard the honking of a horn. I looked out my window and saw Nikki waving from her car. I hurried to grab my jacket and my bag I put together before we even left out old home. I ran down stairs and waved bye to my dad and ran outside.
"Hey Nikki. Thanks." I said, hopping in to the seat beside her. I paid closed attention to which way the school was from here, and where she turned. It was pretty easy. She dropped me off at the front of the school, where the Administration office is at.
Inside it was nice and warm, just the opposite of outside. I walked up to the front desk where a woman sat. She had spiky dirty blond hair, and she wore glasses.
"Hi. Want can I do for you, dear?" She asked, looking up from the computer she was sitting at. Her desk was crowded, and you couldn't see much of it.
"My name is Jaymie Henderson. My dad's friend, Jon Mayes, got me registered here, just a couple weeks ago." I explained, leaning on the counter a bit.
"Ah, I see." She said and held up her index finger, motioning to wait. She got up and walked to the back of the office. After I heard some machine running and a couple of beeping noises she game back with a few papers in hand.
"This is your schedule," She said, putting it in front of me and spinning it around so it wouldn't be upside down. She pointed to a three digit number in the lower right hand corner of the paper. "This is your locker number, and below that is the combination." She looked up at me and I nodded, she spun around and grabbed another paper. "Have your parent or guardian sign this please." She handed them all to me and I smiled.
I walked out the office door, and a gust of cold wind came at me, stinging my ears and nose. I put on my hood for the time being, but once inside the school, I took it off. I took a quick look to see where my locker was located and the combination.
"Hello." I looked over and saw a girl with blond hair smiling at me. "I'm Reagan." She said, walking to her locker which was next to mine. I opened my locker up, to make sure it worked. And sure enough it did with out anything wrong.
"Your new here aren't you?" She asked as she put one of her books in.
"Yes, I am. I'm Jaymie." I said, closing my locker. I took another look at my schedule and looked at what my first class was. I rolled my eyes and huffed.
"What do you have first period?" She asked, looking at me now. I looked down before I spoke again and noticed what she was wearing. Sneakers with skinny jeans and a short sleeve shirt with her light weight jacket slung over her arm. I was wearing ripped jeans, a long sleeved shirt, with a jacket on. I shrugged and answered her question.
"Math. The same as my old school." I shrugged and heard someone behind me. I glanced over my shoulder, and the person who stood there glared at me for a second and continued on. I looked back at Reagan who just shrugged when she saw my confusion.
"That's Taylor Ashman. He mainly keeps to himself or to his group of friends we call the Pack. They're the biggest group at this school, and since our mascot is the wolf we nicknamed them the Pack. I think there's only one girl, and the rest are guys. He normally doesn't glare at anyone though, he just glances and looks away immediately." I looked behind me again to watch the boy named Taylor leave, but when I looked at him, he turned away. I had an odd feeling about him, and for some reason the flash back of the "Shadow" in my yard came back to me. I shook my head as if that would bring me back to reality.
"Um, Jaymie? Are you okay?" Reagan asked, and thankfully that brought me back.
"Yea, I'm fine. Just thinking." I took a deep breath and looked back one more time, and there he was, leaning against the wall, glaring at me.
"Hey, I'll catch up with you later Reagan." We said bye and made a place where we could meet for lunch and I left her, heading towards Taylor.
2. Taylor Ashman
Taylor had dark disheveled hair that matched his dark brown eyes. His eyes narrowed as I walked up to him. But before I could say anything the bell rang. He smiled, but not in a friendly way, and he turned and left. I sighed and went to my class.
I sat in the back, so I could think. My head was spinning by the time class was over, from trying to figure out why that Taylor guy would stare at me like that. I got my bag together and stood up, and I noticed another guy was glaring at me, though this guy had more confusion than anything else showing in his dark blue eyes.
I headed to my locker again, to put my math book in it, and then I remembered Taylor's locker was next to mine. Sure enough, there he was, at his locker.
I tried to sneak up on him, so that he wouldn't have an excuse to leave until he saw me, but somehow he had heard me.
"What do you want?" He asked, not turning around at all.
"I want to know why you keep glaring at me." I saw said calmly, opening my locker. Once I had my math book in I shut it and turned towards him. I had my hands behind my back, as I almost always did. He too shut his locker and turned to me, but his arms were crossed and he was leaning against his locker. I noticed some of the kids were looking at us as they passed, but Taylor didn't pay them any attention.
"I have my reasons." Taylor was a good two or three inches taller than me, and by the way we were standing, he was towering over me.
"It's not just you, I've noticed another, too. And I have a feeling you know why." I said, looking up at him.
"I do know why. And I grantee I know who your talking about." He said, nothing about him changed. His expression stayed the same, and he didn't look like he was about to move either.
"How so?" I asked, challenging him. I wasn't about to give in, and I could tell he wasn't going to anytime soon either.
"Listen, I don't have time for your games. I have things to do and places to be. And you'll be there with me soon." He told me, though I didn't whether to take that as a threat or a promise. Either way, I shivered involuntarily. He chuckled once and left, leaving me standing there.
"What was that all about?" I jumped at the sound of Reagan's voice and spun around.
"Don't do that!" I said breathless. My heart was pounding, truth was, Taylor scared me. There was this threatening look in his eye, almost like a dog would have before attacking. Another shiver ran down my spine, and I got dizzy again.
"Sorry." She said, putting a supporting arm around my shoulders.
"Hey Jaymie!" A voice called, but I never got the chance to see who it was, and the last thing I felt was my head hitting something hard.
"Jaymie..." Someone was calling me, and I tried to sit up, but something pushed me back down gently. I opened my eyes to see three people looking at me. "Jaymie, are you alright?" That was Reagan's voice, and I looked at the other two girls standing there, I recognized one of them, but the other I had never seen before.
"She hit her head pretty hard." The girl I recognized said, but I couldn't think of her name at the moment. I closed my eyes again and breathed in, and re-opened them.
"Reagan? Reagan, what happened?" I asked. Then the name came to me once I looked at the other girl again.
"Nikki?" I asked, and she nodded. They helped me sit up, and I was handed an ice pack.
"You fainted." Reagan answered.
"You hit your head on the ground pretty hard. Try not to move much." Nikki said. I nodded slightly.
"Why did I faint?" I asked, confused. I couldn't remember hardly anything that happened in the last- how liong had I been out? "How long has it been?" I asked.
"About thirty three minuets." The girl I didn't know, answered me. I looked at her, trying to remember if I met her before.
"My name is Kaiden, Reagan's sister." She explained, with a smile. I looked back and forth between the two sisters, they looked similar but not identicle.
"Yes, we are twins. Fraternal twins." Reagan answered. They definitely smiled the same way. I nodded, telling them I understood.
"Your dad is on the way to pick you up, Jaymie." Nikki said.
I may have hit my head hard, but not hard enough to where I didn't realize they weren't telling me why I fainted in the first place.
"I'm not stupid..." I said, raising my eyebrows and taking the ice pack of and setting it in my lap. "I know you guys aren't telling me the reason I fainted."
All three girls exchanged glances and shrugged.
"Alright, so here's what happened." Nikki began and looked at Kaiden. But she didn't say anything, she just looked at Reagan, and she sighed.
"You and Taylor Ashman were talking, and I guess he said something that really scared you. You were as white as a ghost, and when I asked what had happened you jumped, and that's when you fainted." Reagan said. "What did he say that scared you so much Jaymie?" She asked.
I thought really hard, but I couldn't remember. "I don't know." I said shrugging.
"Honey, your father is here." A women with a white outfit came in, and her blond hair was pulled up. Nikki grabbed my things, and the twins followed us out.
"I'll see you guys later. Thanks." I said as Nikki handed my dad my bag.
"See ya later Jaymie, hope you feel better." They all said at the same time and smiled. I waved them a goodbye and left with my dad.
"So, what happened Jaymie? First day of school and you faint? From what?" He asked, looking at me. Past him I could see Taylor, staring at me as we went, I shook it off, and looked back at my dad instead.
I didn't want to tell him the real reason why I fainted so instead I just told him,"I didn't have breakfast this morning, I guess." Why didn't I think of another. I should have known he wouldn't have believed that.
"You never have breakfast, and even in Miami, where it's hot and humid, you only fainted once." That was true, so now I didn't have an excuse.
"Well of it wasn't from that, then I don't know what caused it." She shrugged as her dad opened the door for her. She got in and put on her seat belt and glanced out her window. Taylor had her back to her now, but it looked like he was talking to someone, and they both looked towards me. They both started running, but outside the school, and i couldn't help but wonder where they were going.
"Alright, lets go home and I'll make you some soup." My dad said, getting in to the driver's seat and turning the engine on.
Once we made it to the house, my dad started making the soup, and I headed up to my room to change. My door was closed, and every other door in the house was open. I tried to think back to this morning, but I couldn't remember if I did shut my door or not. I shrugged and went in. I closed the door behind me. My window was cracked open, and I know I didn't do that. There was a piece of white paper laying on my pillow. I changed quickly and picked up the paper.
Jaymie,
Sorry you fainted, but what had been said was true. Obviously you don't know what you are, but I do, and so does everyone else that's in my group. You'll be joining us soon. Until then, don't say anything about this note, and I'll know if you do. TA
I was dumb founded after reading this note. Something was definitely weird in this small town, and all she wanted to do was go back to Miami where all her friends were at.
I jumped when my dad pounded on my door for me to come and help. I layed back in my bed, putting the paper under my covers. I turned on my radio and started eating the soup. I wasn't paying much attention to the music as I was trying to figure who would have written that note.
I scarfed the hot soup down and set the bowl on my nightstand next to my bed and layed down, pulling the covers up and taking the note out and re-reading it.
I must have read the note six more times before falling asleep, still not able to fine a clue.
"Jaymie?" I heard someone call me, but I couldn't tell if it was being called from far away or near. I was suddenly standing in the open field my school provided for sports, but it was in the middle of the night and foggy. A boy stood there, it was like he appeared out of thin air. He was the same boy from my Math class, dark blond hair and blue eyes everything.
"Ah, Jaymie. There you are. We've been looking everywhere for you. Come with us." He said, smiling wickedly.
"Who else is... is with you?" I asked looking around. No one but the boy and I stood there.
"Take a look next to you Jaymie." He said, getting irritated with me.
I reluctantly turned and there he was. Standing there as if he had been all this time. Taylor Ashman, glaring at me, but he had a deathly look in his eyes, and he didn't smile.
The blond haired boy pulled me along with him, holding my wrist tightly. I wrestled, but that only made Taylor hold my shoulders.
I screamed, and my eyes opened. Everything disappeared, the fog, Taylor and the boy, school yard. I sighed a relief, glad it was only a dream, thankful that I had waken up when I did. I had a feeling that something terrible was going to happen, but I couldn't tell if it was going to occur in my dream or reality. I wished I could be back home, in Miami. But I knew that wasn't going to happen.
I got out of bed and walked over to window and opened it to let a cool breeze in the room. I left the window, leaving it open, and went downstairs to the kitchen.
"Hey, you okay? I heard what happened today." Mosiah said looking at me and going back to making his dinner. Mosiah, Chase, and Austin were all in the kitchen, my dad was in the living room sitting on the couch and reading.
"Yea, of course. Thanks." I smiled and left them to their dinner.
"Hey dad." I said, sitting down on the arm rest of the couch looking at the blank TV.
He put his book down and looked at me and smiled. The back of his head was flat from where he was laying on it.
"How are you feeling, honey?" He asked, sitting up and turning to me.
"Okay I guess." I shrugged, and wondered if he had heard my scream at all.
The phone rang twice, before it suddenly stopped. Chase's voice traveled to where my dad and I was sitting.
"Uh, may I ask who this?" he asked. It all became silent, too silent.
Chase walked in the room, his hand over the receiver. "It's for you, Jaymie." He said. He looked confused, and was that worry? Nothing worried Chase that much.
"Who is it?" I whispered.
"They just told me they were a friend. They didn't give a name." He said, I got up and walked to him. I took the phone and mouthed the word thank you before heading up the stairs. I went in my room and closed the door and finally put it up to my ear.
"Hello?" I asked, sitting criss-crossed on the center of my bed. I was almost afraid to hear the voice, because if it was Nikki, Kaiden, or Reagan the would have said so. Wouldn't they? Yes, of course they would! And it also frightened me that this had made Chase look so worried.
"Hello Jaymie Henderson." The voice said. I immediately recognized the voice, and it sent a shiver down my spine.
"W- who is this?" I asked anyways, hoping I was just paranoid and it really wasn't the person I thought it was.
"You know very well who this is, I can hear it in your voice." They said, it sounded almost like a purr.
"N- no I d- don't." I stammered quietly. "What do you want?" I asked, though it wasn't as menacing as i hoped it would sound.
"Come outside for a moment." They said, their tone was so soothing, almost to memorizing to resist, which scared me. A lot.
"Not until you tell me your name." I said. I looked down, and I was shaking with fear. I knew this person was up to no good, and I didn't like it. I could feel it in my gut, and I wanted to go out there and just make them go away!
"You know who this is," the voice sounded more irritated this time, which some how got rid of some of my fear. "But if it will get you to come outside, then I'll tell you. Will you, Jaymie? Will you come outside if I tell you?" His voice became deeper, and sounded evil. "And I would like it much better if you came out of your own free will." He said threateningly.
I gulped, and lost all my thoughts. I shook it off. "Yes, yes fine, i will." I said, my voice shaking.
He sighed. "Taylor Ashman. Now, here's what I want you to do." he continued, with out giving me a chance to let me speak. "When you come to school tomorrow, I want you to meet me a room 1024." He said, and it sounded like he lowered his voice.
"And if I don't?" I asked, getting this sudden bravery.
"I have ways Jaymie." He said.
"Fine, I'll meet you there." I said, losing my bravery as fast as it had come.
"Make sure not to tell anyone either." He said and hung up. After he had hung up I pushed the red end button, sighed and layed back on my bed. I hated this city already, I just wasn't cut out for it. And, apparently, I stand out like a tree in a field of blue flowers. I wanted to go home, re pack everything and just leave, pretend we never even thought of moving here in the first place, but I knew it was a "no way, Jose."
I was about to go back downstairs to put the phone away when I realized my dad would ask me who it was. Would I tell him the turth? Or say it was a friend? I had an idea, so I opened the door and headed downstairs to the kitchen.
"Well?" He asked, turning his head to look at me. He looked really tired.
"It was a guy I met today. He heard about me fainting and called to make sure I was alright." I said. It wasn't all a lie, I just didn't tell him the whole truth. "And dad?" I looked at him.
"Hm?" He asked, blinking.
"Get some rest. You look to tired."
"Come here real quick, Jaymie." He said sitting up. he patted at the now empty spot next to him as I walked over to the couch.
"Remember me being Captain at the Miami Police Headquaters?" He asked.
"Mmhm." I said nodding. I remembered it very well. How every guy was itimidated by my father, which made them not want to date me.
"Well, the Police here has offered me a higher rank in the force, which is Cheif." He explained. My whole world was coming to a slow stop, taking time for all the horrible events to happen first. This is why he waited to tell me why we moved, because he knew how much I hated him being a cop.
I tried to keep my voice calm, but with all the events in the past week, it was very hard to do. I took a deep breath, and let it out slowly.
"I'm happy for you. Truely, I am." I said, which really was true. I was happy for him, yes. I was happy he was Cheif, no.
"Thanks." he said, and patted my back. "I think I'm going off to bed. You have a ride to school tomorrow right?" he asked.
"Um, yea." Well, at least I think. Nikki would probably pick me up again. "Why?"
"I'll be gone before you're awake." He said getting up.

I wrote a story over the summer and submitted it to a writing contest. It won 9th place out of 25 stories. I didn't have time to edit it though, so I probably could've done better if I had. Anyway, here's my story.Dark Petals In The Wind (Part 1) By: Jess B. I ran outside and straight for my mailbox as soon as the mailman left my lawn. I looked through all the letters quickly then I saw that one letter. Literally, I tossed the other mail, which happened to be bills to pay and magazines to read, on the ground and quickly opened the letter, my hand shaking. Dear Miss. Cassandra Pinello, I regret to inform you that your application to our collage has been rejected. It has been called to my attention that you have not yet mastered your elemental magic. Before we can even consider looking at your grades, you must master your magic. I didn't have to read anymore to know what it meant. Again, I was rejected. This is the fourth college I've tried to apply, but I keep getting rejected for the same reason. Sure, I can use my magic of wind, but it isn't mastered yet. No one tells me what it means to master it, but all my dad says is that I will know when I have. But what does that mean? The wind gathered around me as I started to get more angry. It blew my long brown hair in my face and the mail was blown all over my street. One of the problems of not mastering my element, is that it basically has a mind of it's own around me until I do. I ran all over the street, collecting all of my mail. Once I was sure I had it all, I walked inside my home. “So, Cassy, what's the news?” my father asked, walking up to me. “I... I was rejected.” I said quietly. “You knew this would happen. You cannot get accepted anywhere until you master that element of yours!” he yelled. “Dad, how exactly did you master your element?” “I told you before, I'm not supposed to answer that. You have to learn yourself!” “But how am I supposed to know what to do!” I cried. Dad looked at me like I was an idiot, then walked back to the couch to watch whatever was on the television. I ran into my room. I am only nineteen years old and I just got out of high school a few months ago! I have no clue what I even want to do with my life! I sat on my bed and looked out the nearby window. It was starting to rain. Sighing, I absentmindedly reached my hand to my right to pet my cat. But then I remembered... Kitty died yesterday. Yes, I named her Kitty and she was the only thing that helped me get through my years of school. Most people got to master their element by ninth grade or maybe tenth. The ones who did master their element in high school usually made fun of the ones who haven't mastered it yet. It was a terrible school life for me. Everyday, I would look forward to seeing Kitty and telling her about my day as I let out my anger by petting her. It would calm me down enough to focus on the important things. But, now that Kitty is gone... Without thinking of any other choice, I shoved a bunch of clothes into a travel bag. Then I took my small flower shaped pillow off of my bed and walked down the stairs. “Just where do you think you're going, Cassy?” my father yelled at me from his spot on the couch. “I'm leaving England. If I can't get into college here, then I might as well try it in America!” I yelled back. My dad turned around in his seat. “You are not leaving this house, this city and definitely not this country! I will not allow it!” “Dad, I have to live my own life. I'm done living by your rules.” I said, slamming the frount door behind me. I took my money out of my pocket. Okay. I have enough money for an airplane ride there at least. But, I'm not sure if this is quite enough for a place to live... I only have a few options. One, I can stay here, but not go to college. Two, I can ask the bank for a loan, but who knows when I'll be able to pay it back. Three, I can steal from someone else. Well, I guess that choice three is the only one that might work. I don't like to do bad things, but I'm not a goody-goody either. I might have to steal money from someone. I walked into the main part of the city and I looked around. Tall skyscrapers everywhere. I continued walking deeper into the city and I saw someone playing a violin with a pretty big audience throwing money into the case. The person playing it was not really what I would describe as someone who says, “Give me money while I perform some cheap entertainment!”. She was kind of skinny and had a long flowing black dress on. It wasn't super fancy, but enough to catch your eye. The performance really wasn't bad either. It sounded mysterious, and she wasn't reading a sheet of music either. She also had long brown hair that went to a little above her hips, and these alluring green eyes. Her eyes seemed to be drawing in her audience. I stayed there too and listened. Shortly, she finished her song and everyone started clapping insanely. The woman looked directly at me and I noticed that she was not human. She had elven ears. Once everyone cleared out, she walked over to me. “Are you running away from home?” she asked. Her voice sounded caring, like how I imagine the mother that I never had would sound like. “Um, yes. You see, I haven't mastered my element, so I thought that if I go to the USA, I'd be able to get to college there.” I answered. “Ah. I remember when I mastered my element,” she said, putting her violin into it's case. “I have the element of music.” “Music? But I thought the elements are only earth, wind, water, fire, light, and dark.” I said, making sure I mentioned all of the elements. “Well, that's for humans. But for elves, there is a variety of elements. They include the ones you mentioned, but there are also the element of the arts.” she said, smiling kindly at me. “Oh. I didn't know that...” “By the way, my name is Sophia.” “I'm Cassy.” I said. “Well, since I'm on my way to America right now, would you like to join me there?” Sophia asked, putting her violin case on her back. “What? Yes! Of course! As long as it's no bother to you.” I answered quickly. “Honey, I'm the one who asked you. It's perfectly fine.” she said, laughing slightly. “Thank you so much!” I said, trying not to hug her. Because hugging someone I just met would be kind of strange. Sophia and I walked to the airport which was ten blocks down from where we were. On the walk there, I learned that Sophia is only twenty-two years old, which is three years older than myself. She seemed older. I expected her to be about twenty-eight or something. Anyway, the moment we walked into the airport, we were stopped by a guard. “Excuse me miss, are you an elf?” the guard asked. His voice was really deep sounding. “Why, yes I am, and I'm damn proud of it.” Sophia said, standing her ground. You see, elves, vampires and faeries are persecuted all over the world. They all usually try to disguise themselves as humans, but there is always something about them that makes it obvious that they aren't. For elves, there are the ears. For the vampires, they are pale with sharp teeth. And for the faeries, there are wings, which are very hard to disguise. “I'm sorry, but elves are not allowed into the airport. Please leave. Now.” the guard said sternly. “Now why should I listen to you?” Sophia challenged. The guard took out a small phone. “This is John. Please send another guard. We have some trouble.” he said. Soon enough, there was another guard beside the one named John. “Percy, reportin' for duty, sir!” the other guard said. He sounded, and even looked like, a young kid. He was probably... sixteen years old by the sound of it. John looked at him in disbelief. “They sent you?” he asked. Percy glared at him. “And what's wrong with me? Just 'cause I'm young? I can handle these ladies m'self.” “Whatever you say, kid.” John said, leaving him alone with us. Percy looked at me, then at Sophia. “Well, miss, I know I shouldn't let you through here, but seein' as I'm not supposed ta be here either, it shouldn't be a problem, right?” “What do you...” I started, then I noticed, his skin was pale and he had sharp teeth. “Aren't you a vamp? Why are you a guard? Don't guards prevent vamps and elves-” “It's part of the reason I'm here. I want ta change how these guys do stuff 'round here. It's unfair ta do anythin' like this ta any species.” Percy answered. “So, you'll let us through, you say?” Sophia asked. “Yeah. Would ya like for me ta accompany both of you, 'cause if the other guards see ya with another guard, it means you got special permission to get on an airplane.” Percy said, looking more at Sophia than at me. “That's very nice of you. I would love to have to come with us.” Sophia said, smiling her charming smile. Sophia, Percy and I paid for our airplane tickets. Our flight is set to arrive three hours from now. So, we took a seat at a table in the lunch area of the airport. I looked at Percy and Sophia, who were talking to each other about something. So, when we make it to America, what college am I going to try to get into first? I can't wait until we get there! The wind started to pick up a bit and they both looked at me. “Heh, sorry.” I said, calming down, which made the wind die out. “You got the element of wind? I got the element of souls. Yeah, only us vamps get soul, no humans or elves or faeries. Ya see, if ya have an element of souls, then ya tend to change people's moods around you. But, ya also got this kinda air about ya that makes people feel kinda... dead-like around you.” Percy said, breaking off a little at the end. “Hey, how did you two master your elements?” I asked, hoping I'd get an answer. “Now, honey, first, we aren't allowed to tell you anything about how to master your element. And second, mastering elements differs through species. So even if we were allowed to tell you how to, you wouldn't be able to master it our way.” Sophia said. “Huh. I guess it will always be a mystery to me, hmm?” I asked quietly, hanging my head down a bit. “I'd tell ya if I could. I might not have known you for very long, but I can tell that you're both not goin' ta turn on me or anythin'.” Percy said. Then his expression changed to looking scared, “You aren't gonna do that ta me, right?” I laughed. “I won't. I guess we're all outcasts from the main society in a way. You being different races and my element being out of my control...” No one said anything for a few minutes. “Hey, Percy, you know how you said that your element makes people dead-like? Well, right now, I don't think it's true. You allowed us in and, for some reason, I feel better than before.” “Really? Ya sure you're not just sayin' that? Cause for all of the people I know, they all act kinda dreary or they are scared of me.” Percy said, looking at us both with concern. “I haven't felt bad in a long while, so if it was true, you would've broken my happiness streak, honey.” Sophia said with a small laugh. “Maybe things are finally changing.” Percy said with a smile. We ended up getting some food from the food court. I got a slice of pepperoni pizza, Sophia got a salad and Percy chose not to eat anything. He insisted that he wasn't hungry. After we ate, we went to where we would board our plane. With only a half hour before the arrival time, I could already see myself getting into college without this element lingering on me. “Cassy Pinello!” I turned towards whoever had just called my name and my father stood before me. “I told you that I'm not going to go home, Dad.” I reminded him. “I forbid you to leave! You're coming home right now!” he yelled, grabbing my wrist. “Let me go!” I screamed. Percy and Sophia were at my side within a second. My father let go of my wrists. “You're with an elf? That filthy creature?” my father said, glaring at Sophia. Percy fidgeted a bit because my dad didn't know that Percy was a vampire. He's really good at pretending that he isn't a human. “Sophia is not a creature, she's an elf! What's wrong with that?” I yelled. My father grabbed my wrist again, but tighter than before and glared at me. He tried to pull me away from Sophia and Percy. “Dad! I told you I'm not going with you! I'm not going to be back. You didn't even care when Kitty died!” I yelled at him, breaking free of his grasp and turning away from him. “I always hated cats.” he said. Suddenly, all of the winds gathered around me and was increasing in speed just as my anger was topping over. “It's bad enough when you insult elves, but when you insult my cat, the one who helped me make it through all of those hard times in school...” I threatened, turning around slowly. But, my father was no longer standing in frount of me. Instead, Percy was there with a gun pointed at my father. “It would be best not to annoy me. I'll kill you. I'll kill you myself and I won't get busted for it.” Percy said, sounding a lot older than he did when I first heard him. “Heh. You don't have the guts, kid.” my dad said, laughing. Percy looked at me, like he was asking for permission to kill my father. I shook my head slowly. Percy lowered the gun and growled at my dad, baring his fangs. “You're a vampire! Cassy! A vampire and an elf? What mess have you gotten yourself into this time?!” my father yelled. People around us looked directly at my father, yelling his brains out incoherently. “I think our plane has arrived. It's been nice to meet you.” Sophia said, pulling me and Percy away from my father and towards the man collecting our tickets. Apparently, the man paid no attention to the incident between us and my father, because he didn't say anything about it. We walked onto the platform leading to the airplane and we looked around for some seats by each other. Sophia and Percy quickly chose seats next to each other. Percy was in the seat furthest from the window, and he looked at me apologetically. I sighed and I saw one empty seat behind them. The other person there was boy who was looking out the window. “Do you mind if I take a seat here?” I asked the stranger. He looked at me and nodded. I sat down in the seat and the boy turned back to the window. He looked about my age. He had straight black hair that seemed to flip out a bit at the ends. It wasn't like an emo flap or anything, it was just...flippy. “I'm Cole.” I heard him mumble. “I'm Cassy.” I said back to him, taking out a book to read for the long flight. He looked at me. “I've read that before. It doesn't have a great ending, just so you know.” Cole said. “Well, at least you didn't spoil the ending.” I mumbled. I hate it when people tell you the entire plot when you just start to read it. Because then it doesn't make the ending a mystery. Good books have you guessing until the end. Usually, what I do when I finish reading a mystery book like this, is that I read it over to see that the clues make sense. But I like to guess the first time I read it, thank you very much. “It's an obvious ending that you can probably find out by the middle of the story.” Cole said. “Well, if I read it, I'll find it out, hmm?” I said, looking at him, annoyed that he is disrupting my reading. “It'll be quicker if I just tell you.” Cole said with a small smile. “But then what would I do for the entire flight?” I asked, still annoyed. Cole shrugged. “You know it's going to take a lot of hours to get there, and we haven't even taken off the ground yet.” I said, trying to get back to the book. “So why are you starting to read already?” Cole asked, laughing. I looked at him again, more annoyed than before. “I have more books.” I said, taking out more three books from my bag. “I've read them all.” “Well, congratulations! Let's throw a party!” I said sarcastically, rolling my eyes. I do not like teenage boys at all. They usually tend to think they are better than anyone else even though it's obvious that us girls are a hell of a lot smarter. Well, most of us. Can't speak for all of the girls. Some girls who were in my high school were really stupid. “As long as I can bring the music.” Cole said, winking. “Ugh. Do you not understand sarcasm when you heard it?” I asked. Cole laughed again. Sophia turned around in her seat. “Hey, honey, no fighting now, okay?” she said. “We don't want ta forced off the plane.” Percy chimed in. “Fine.” I said, turning back to my book as they turned back forward. “Who are they to order you around like that?” Cole asked. “They are my friends who are accompanying me. Do you have a problem with them?” I asked, glaring at him. “Nah, no problem with me.” he said. Then he lowered his voice to a whisper. “You know that that girl is an elf and the kid is a vamp, right?” “Yes, I do know.” I said, looking at him. “Are you going to insult them because they are?” “I told you that they're no problem to me.” “And you won't tell anyone that they aren't human?” I asked. “It depends.” he said, laying back in his seat. “Depends on what?” I asked. Cole shrugged. “I asked you a question.” I reminded him impatiently. “And I will have an answer soon enough.” Cole said. I sighed and went back to my book as the plane took off the ground. I finished reading the book, and it was like what Cole had said. The plot was very easy to figure out. I put down the book distastefully. “Told you so.” “Oh shut up.” I said back. I hate it when guys are right. Especially about things like books. “You are really boring, you know that right?” Cole said. “Am I? Well, find a way to entertain yourself then.” I said, taking out another book. “That book has a terrible ending too.” “Oh really? Do you just not like books or something?” “I prefer to actually write books instead of reading bad ones like..” he stopped and made a face at my books, “Those.” “And yet you know the ending to them?” I asked, with a smile. “Well, I didn't know they were bad to begin with.” “Wait, you write stories?” I asked. Cole nodded. “What kind?” “Different kinds. Fantasy mostly. Some sci-fi here and there.” he said quietly, looking back out the window. “Do you have any with you I can read?” I asked, trying to be nice and to forget that he was being an annoying jerk earlier. “I have some with me, but they aren't done, so you can't read them.” he mumbled. Huh. Wonder why he got so quiet? “Well, then, I won't bother you about them.” I said, laying back in my seat. “If you really want to read them though, I guess I'll let you. But they are just rough drafts and not complete.” Cole said slowly, looking at me. I looked at him too. “Sure.” I said with a smile. Cole smiled a small smile back and he picked his bag and was searching through it. “Oh crap! Don't tell me that they're in the other suitcase!” Cole said, dumping everything out of the bag. There were a few snacks and books, but nothing that involved writing anything. Cole sighed. “They aren't in here.” he said a few seconds later. “It's fine. I don't need to read them.” I said, not knowing what else to say. I mean, I wanted to read them. But if he doesn't have it, I can't. “Do you need help putting the stuff back?” I asked, reaching for one of his books just as he did. For a moment, our hands touched. I brought mine back quickly, and for some strange reason, my heart seemed to be beating faster than usual. Wait a second... I can't possibly like him, can I? Cole put everything back himself while I just sat there, questioning my heart. “Cassy?” “Huh?” I asked, snapping back to reality. “I said that you can read them when we get off the plane if we have time.” “Okay. That'll be fine.” I said. Cole went back to staring out the window. I looked at Sophia and Percy, who were both asleep. A flight attendant walked up and down the aisle, saying that there was about two hours before the expected landing time. I heard some whispering and rustling behind me and I assumed it was just the people behind me. Both of the people got up and stood in the middle of the aisle. One of them looked directly at me and I looked back. He and his friend looked kind of like they grew up on the bad side of the city. “You, girl. You have something we need.” the man said. I looked around. “Me?” I asked, confused. “Yes you. Now, cooperate or else this whole plane is going down.” the other said, crouching down next to me and showing a gun from his pocket. I stared at them, horrified. “What do you want?” I asked, in a hushed tone, making sure no one else could hear. “We need you to follow us when we get off the airplane. Your element is important to us.” the man without the gun said. “My element? What's so special about it?” “You don't know the power that-” the man was cut off when the flight attendant passed by and saw the gun. She looked like she was going to faint, and it probably wasn't due to the fact she was more than likely starving herself to look as skinny as she does. “Please hand that over. Weapons are not allowed on the plane.” she said, trying to stay calm. When she said weapons, everyone in the area looked over and saw. A few people screamed and were cowering in the corner of their seats. Cole looked over at me and the two men. He seemed to be getting really angry. Sophia and Percy were still sound asleep. “Heh. Now, why would we do that, miss?” said the man with the gun, standing up and taking out the gun from his pocket. “Now, now, Vincent. Do we really have to kill this pretty lady? I could find a better use of her.” said the other. The one named Vincent looked around. There were quite a bit of people still sleeping but the rest were scared out of their minds. “Well, what do you plan on doing to her, Nathan?” Vincent asked, lowering his gun, laughing. Suddenly, Cole stood up and punched Vincent in the stomach. “What the hell is your problem? What's the use of hurting innocent people?” Cole yelled. Vincent, who was knocked back about five feet, got back to his feet and laughed. “Why you ask? Because it's fun.” Vincent said, “I love to see the look on people's faces as their death comes sooner than they expected.” “But what's the use of me?” I asked. “You see, your power might not be fully developed, but once it is, you'll be a threat to us.” Nathan said, “So it's better to deal with you now, rather than later?” “Deal with me?” I asked. What's that supposed to me... wait... “You want to kill me?!” I yelled. Vincent got closer. “Well, we aren't supposed to kill you. Not yet, anyway.” he said. Cole kicked him in his stomach again. “I'm not going to let you hurt her!” Cole yelled. Again, Vincent stood up but this time, he pulled the gun from his pocket. “Are you sure about that, kid?” Vincent asked, as he pulled the trigger. It took me a few seconds to realize who he had shot, but then I saw the fresh blood pouring out from above my stomach. I didn't know what was going on. Everything seemed all blurry and distant. I remember that once the gun was shot, people started freaking out. The pilot ran out from the cockpit and started yelling. I even remember what he had said. “What just happened!? Aagghh! I can't take this anymore! I hate my life!” the pilot said, then I remember seeing him open an emergency door and jump out, with no parachute. Sophia and Percy had woken up by the time the pilot jumped. Once they saw that he jumped, Percy rushed to the cockpit and Sophia followed. She was yelling directions at him, which I could hear from where I was laying. “Go left!” Sophia yelled. “Your left or my left?” Percy said frantically. “Just go left!” “Okay.” “No! The other left!” Sophia yelled quickly. This kept going on for a long time. Cole started to run towards me, away from Nathan who was knocked out and was almost about to fall out of the open door. “Cassy, how are you feeling?” he asked. I made some sort of sound, because it hurt too much to do anything else. “I'll make sure you're alright. Don't worry.” he said, as Vincent got closer to us. The last thing I remember seeing was Vincent right in frount of Cole, and I got this feeling of darkness surround me. But the darkness somehow felt... safe. It clouded my vision entirely as I lost my grip on my conscious. I awoke, but it was a weird feeling. I didn't feel any more pain. It felt like I was floating, and I saw a dark creature appear before me. “Am I dead?” I asked the creature. The creature laughed and shook it's head. “No, you are not dead, Cassandra Pinello.” it said. “I would rather be called Cassy, please.” I said back. The creature laughed again. “Who are you, exactly?” “I have known you for a very long time. I will not tell you my name, or the future events could be ruined, but you have met me already, whether you know it or not.” it said. I got a better look at the creature. It had one red eye and another green. It had black feathery looking hair and huge black wings that were about double the size of the creature itself. “Yeah, that really doesn't help me. What happened to everyone on the airplane?” I asked. The creature turned away. “Your friends aren't that great at flying airplanes, are they? I only had enough power to save a few.” it said slowly. “Who are those few?” I asked with a shaky voice. “I don't know them all by name, but your friends who were trying to fly the airplane and a few of the nearby passengers.” Wait... no Cole? Or was he considered one of the nearby passengers? “Your friends... You know that the girl is an elf and the other kid is a vamp, right?” “Yes I know. Is that a problem?” I responded. Wait.. that sounds kind of familiar, but why? Huh. Must be my imagination. The creature turned back towards me. “You've been here too long. You must leave.” it said, looking at me. “Um, alright. But how am I supposed to do that?” I asked. The creature put his hand on my shoulder. “You must not tell anyone of this meeting, understand?” it asked. I nodded and I felt a surge of energy pass through me as my eyes were forced shut. When I could open my eyes again, I saw Sophia and Percy looking over me. I sat up quickly and I looked around. “Where are we?” I asked them. “We are at the airport.” Percy said, looking away from me. Sophia looked at me. “Are you feeling alright, honey?” she asked, pushing the hair out of my face. I nodded. “Yeah, I feel a ton better. Nothing hurts anymore.” I answered. “That's strange, because you still are bleeding from your wound..” Percy said, still looking away so he won't start what is known as a vampire frenzy, which starts when a vampire sees human blood. I looked down at where I was shot and he was right. Blood was still pouring out, but it didn't hurt. “But it really doesn't hurt.” I said, looking around again. I then saw Cole laying on the ground not too far from us. “Is Cole okay?” I asked quickly. “He's alive, but barely. It's hard to believe, but his wounds are worse than yours.” Sophia said, looking at him too. I sat up, and Sophia tried to stop me, but I resisted her and walked towards Cole. He was facing up and his face was turned to the side. His clothes were all bloody and ripped at the elbow and shoulder areas. Even though he was unconscious, he looked like he was in pain. I mean, aside from all of the wounds anyway. There was a look across his face that wasn't really normal. It looked like he was having a nightmare of some sort. I was going to stand up again, but suddenly.. He sat up quickly, as I was still looking at him. Our lips met. He didn't seem to mind though. It was... strange. After a while, he turned his head away, breaking our contact. “Sorry.” he mumbled. “Oh, it's okay.” I said back, turning my head as well. Oh my gosh, Oh my gosh, Oh my gosh! I... he... we... kissed!! Cole looked at me strangely. I mean, I might have just met him a little while ago, but I can tell it is an unusual look from him. “Um.. Cole?” I asked. He moved closer to me. “Cassy.. I-” he started, trying to stand. He couldn't and he fell, his head falling into my lap and his eyes squeezed shut. “Cole, you haven't recovered! Don't push yourself to do what you can't!” I said. “Alright.” he answered, with a smile. At least he's looking normal now. But I still can't believe he actually kissed me.. “Hey, Cassy.” Cole said, opening one of his eyes. “Yeah?” “Your stomach is still bleeding.” he said. I looked down at my stomach, and it was indeed bleeding. “Yeah, but I'll be fine. Compared to me, you look really bad.” I answered. “Oh, gee thanks, Cassy. Telling me I'm bad looking right after you just kissed me.” Cole said, closing his open eye and still smiling. “It was an accident! How was I supposed to know you'd wake up when you did?” I yelled. Cole laughed, but then he started coughing. “Cole..” I started, “what exactly happened when I went unconscious?” “You know, I'm not exactly sure myself. I remember you getting shot, then..” Cole started to answer, as his smile was disappearing, “Vincent trying to hurt you again. Then nothing after that.” “Strange...” I said slowly. What could've happened? Sophia and Percy wouldn't know because they were piloting.. I looked around. “Wait, we're in America, aren't we?” I yelled. Cole opened his eyes and looked around too, without getting up. “Apparently.” he answered. Wow.. I'm one step closer to getting into college. I can't wait! Sophia and Percy walked over to us. “Um, guys? We learned that a new president has been elected into office.” Percy said. “Well, that's good for those Americans. I only have my mind set for co-” “The new president might pass a law similar to the one in England... regarding the colleges.” Sophia said, biting her lip nervously. Cole sat straight up. “What?!” Cole and I both yelled. No, no, no! They can't pass that law! “Um, Cole, is it? Have you mastered your element?” Percy asked. “Yeah. The element of darkness. Why do you ask?” Cole asked back. “You seemed surprised about the college thing. You would have nothing to be worried about if you mastered your element already.” Percy answered. Cold laid his head back down on my lap. “Doesn't matter to you.” Cole mumbled. Percy got closer to us. “Hey! That doesn't answer my question!” he yelled. Cole didn't respond. “Oh yes,” Sophia said, pulling something from a bag, “this should help stop the pain and bleeding. Both of you should take it.” She gave me and Cole each a large bottle of something. “Excuse me, Sophia. It contains sixty percent alcohol. Is it safe for us to have?” I asked. “If you want to feel normal, you better take it.” Sophia said. Cole sat up and stared at the bottle. “Is there something wrong?” I asked, as Cole kept staring at the bottle. “What? No, it's nothing. Well, time to drink it.” Cole said, uncapping the bottle just as I did. We looked at each other as if saying good luck and we both took a drink. It smelled too much like alcohol and tasted too much like it too. Though, it also seemed to have a hint of something else that made me want to have more than one bottle of it. Cole and I each finished our bottle. “It didn't taste too great...” I said, “But at least the bleeding is starting to stop.” I handed Sophia the empty bottle. “Ah hehehehe! I feel great!” Cole said, with a small hiccup at the end. Oh no... don't tell me... after one bottle... he's drunk?! “Come on. We have to get going.” Percy said, as he and Sophia started to walk away. “Um, guys.. I think Cole is drunk.” I said, looking at him as he stood up, wobbling as he did. “What? Not many people get drunk after just one bottle. Now let's get going. We have to find a house, you know.” Sophia said, calling back to us. I sighed and stood up as we followed after them. We left the airport and were on the main streets. It seemed to be a pretty big city, but not as big as London. Sophia and Percy were a couple feet ahead of me and the drunky. Cole kept randomly laughing and I was stuck with him. Gosh, why does he have to get drunk so easily? This isn't making it any easier for me to deal with everything that's going on. Cole grabbed my arm. I looked at him, confused. “Follow me.” he said. “But you're drunk and you haven't been here before, have you?” I said. He kept pulling at my arm. “I'm not going to go if you're drunk.” I said, yanking my arm away. Cole glared at me, hiccuped, then headed off into an alleyway. “Argh! Cole! Get back here!” I yelled, following after him. By the time I caught up with Cole, I saw that there were three guys surrounding him. Two of them were huge thug-like people. The other was pretty skinny. They saw me. “Hey, look at her. I think she's the one Boss was talkin' about.” one of the large thugs said. “She is.” the skinny one said. I looked over at Cole, who was still acting drunk. “Hiya Cassy!” Cole said, waving at me with a smile. I rolled my eyes and I took a fighting stance. “She thinks she can beat us three?” the second large thug laughed. Well, I have no control over my element, so maybe if I get mad enough, it'll go attack them... The large thugs got closer to me. “Should we finish her off now, Granville?” one of them said to the other. “Wellington! Granville! Boss said that she didn't want the girl dead!” the skinny one yelled. The one named Granville looked from me, to the skinny thug. “Delaware, it would be easier to kill her while she's weak.” Granville grunted. Wellington nodded in agreement. “We had orders and we have to follow through with them.” Delaware said sternly. As the three were yelling back and forth, I took that chance to get over to Cole. “Stay quiet.” I whispered, grabbing his arm to get him away. “Hey, I didn't do nothin' wrong!” Cole said with a hiccup at the end. I stared at him. “You got drunk.” I said, pulling him away. Suddenly, a huge thug, more muscular than Granville or Wellington, appeared in front of us. “You are coming with us, kids.” he said, picking up both me and Cole by the collars of our shirts. The three others stopped fighting. “Ford!? What are you doing here?” Delaware asked. “Boss knew you wouldn't do your job correctly.” Ford said. Ford tightened his grip and it was getting really hard to breathe now. “What do you... need me for?” I asked, struggling for some air. “You and Cole happen to be the only two with-” Ford started, but Cole had kicked Ford's stomach before he finished. He instantly threw Cole against the ground. “Cole!” I managed to yell. Ford laughed. “You... you hurt him...” I mumbled. I was running out of breath. I kept thinking that I had to save myself and Cole. Wind thrashed around me faster than it ever had before. I saw that is had actually slit Ford's skin, which caused him to drop me as well. “You three, we're going. We will deal with you kids later.” Ford said, vanishing with the other thugs. The wind settled down, scrambled to my feet and ran over to Cole. “It... seems like I'm only... acting as a handicap to you.” Cole said weakly, looking up at me. I shook my head. “You are the one who kicked him. If you hadn't, we could've been dead.” I said, helping Cole stand up. “But at least you're not drunk anymore.” I said, with a small laugh. “Sorry. I get drunk by even the smell of alcohol.” Cole said as I saw Sophia running into the alley. “What happened? Are you two alright!?” Sophia asked frantically. “We're fine.” Cole answered. “Percy found a hotel we can stay at. It's this way; follow me.” Sophia said, walking out of the alley. I turned to look at Cole. “Note to self: never give Cole alcohol.” I said with a laugh, as Cole and I followed Sophia. After a few minutes of walking, we saw Percy standing in frount of a building. We went inside of the hotel and we found our rooms. Sophia and I were sharing a room, and that meant Cole and Percy were sharing, which isn't too great because they aren't exactly the best of friends. Then again, I would not want to share with either of them. Who knows what they would do to me! It was dark outside by this time, and I was getting sleepy. I said good night to the boys and went into the room with Sophia. It didn't take too long before I fell asleep. Then suddenly... “Hey, Cassy!” I heard. I slowly looked up and saw someone looking over me. I sat up and tried to get a better look, but all I could see is that it was about an hour after I fell asleep. “Huh..?” I asked sleepily. I blinked a few times and I could see that it was Cole. “Cole?! What are you-” I was cut off my Cole putting his hand over my mouth. “Shh. They're still asleep.” he whispered, as he removed his hand. “What are you doing in here?!” I asked. “Follow me.” Cole said, starting to walk away. “Wait. Why? Where? Huh?” I asked, confused. “Just follow me, okay?” he said, leaving the room. I sighed. Thinking about what he could possibly want, I got out of the bed quietly and left the room as well.

Dark Petals In The Wind (Part 2) I followed him outside into the parking lot. He just stood in the middle of the parking lot. “What do you want, Cole?” I asked, rubbing at my eyes, “I'm really tired.” “So you're too tired to want to learn how to master your element?” Cole asked with a sly smile. “You aren't allowed to teach me though.” I said. “Eh. So what? It's just a couple of rules.” Cole said, walking closer. “Okay. Then tell me what I need to know.” I said, also walking closer. We were about three steps away from each other. “All you have to do is-” Cole leaned in closer then suddenly, he was punched. I looked to see who it was. It was Cole. Wait.. two Coles? The one that was punched stood up. “Cassy! That isn't the real me!” the one who punched the other yelled. I looked from one to the other. “How am I supposed to know...?” I asked myself. If I choose the wrong one, I don't know what will happen. “He's lying.” the one who was with me first said. I'm just going to call him Cole One. “He's the liar!” Cole Two yelled. I shook my head. Okay, okay. I can handle this. “Coles, I will ask you both questions the real Cole should know. Where did we meet?” I asked. “On the airplane.” both said simultaneously. “What did Cole easily realize?” “Your friends aren't human.” both said. Cole Two turned to Cole One. “Will you stop stalking us?!” Cole Two yelled. “Quiet, you. After the plane crashed, and we were at the airport, what is the first thing Cole did when he gained consciousness?” I asked. “We kissed.” Cole Two said with a smile. Cole One didn't say anything. “Ding ding ding! We have our fake!” I said, turning to the Cole that didn't answer. The impostor laughed. Its form started to change. Now, there was me, the real Cole, and a faerie, with orange wings and brown hair. She looked really young, like she was eleven or twelve. Though, most faeries do look young, and they have a strange way of speaking. It tends to annoy me because instead of saying 'I', they say their name. As well as you, they use your name. Ugh. “Hey Boss,” she started, looking into the sky, “Caroline is sorry that she couldn't bring Cassandra and Cole to you. Caroline will make up for this.” She looked at me and Cole. “Caroline promised Boss that she will get Cassandra and Cole. And Caroline doesn't break promises!” Caroline flew into the air and stared down at us. “What is this kid's problem? It's late and I want sleep!” Cole said. I sighed. “So, what should we do?” I asked. “Let's just get this pest away from us.” Cole said with a yawn. I looked back at Caroline who was now holding a bow and arrow, laughing childishly. “I guess this pest isn't playing around.” I said. Caroline shot the arrow at us. It was really close to hitting my stomach, but I barely managed to side-step it before it hit me. A shadowy figure appeared beneath Caroline. “Caroline, you have failed. Get back to headquarters before you mess things up.” the shadow said, then vanishing as fast as it had come. Caroline looked at us both, then vanished just as the shadow had. “Why are you out here anyway? You could've gotten hurt!” Cole yelled. “Um... you see... Caroline, or whoever, told me to follow and I did and said that she would teach me how to master my element.” I answered quietly. Cole turned to me. “You idiot! You know that no one is allowed to tell you how to master it!” Cole yelled. I winced, not expecting him to yell so much. “You idiot! When that arrow flew by I thought...” Cole said, turning away. “Cole?” I asked. “Just get back inside!” Cole yelled, marching away into the hotel angrily. What was he going to say? He thought what? I sighed and walked back to the hotel to get some sleep. I woke up at about seven in the morning. I saw Sophia by the door, talking to what sounded like Cole and Percy. Still wanting some sleep, I turned over in the bed and tried to fall asleep again, and I dreamed a dream... a nightmare. I was standing alone in the middle of a street at night. The streetlight was flickering on and off. While I was just standing, I felt a light breeze from my left. I turned towards the breeze and I saw all of the thug people I've seen: Granville, Ford, Wellington, Caroline, Nathan, and Vincent. In frount of them all was that shadowed person I saw last night. The shadow laughed evilly and threw someone at me. It was Cole, nearly dead. Then, to my right, I saw Sophia and Percy on the ground, dead. The blood still looked fresh. The shadow took a step towards me. “You've done well, my slave.” the shadow said. I looked around then everyone and everything vanished. “What did I do?!” I yelled out into the nothingness. “Let me show you.” the shadow's voice said. All at once, the scene changed. There was a huge crowd all looking up at someone guarded by four guys in black suits. I was looking like I was a bystander. Not too faraway, I saw myself, Percy and Sophia. Where's Cole? I couldn't think too long about it because the crowd suddenly got quiet when the person raised his hand in the air. Once it was perfectly quiet, the man spoke. “Thank you, America, for voting me as your new president. As you can see, your last president ruined our economy, and started a war with Russia. I will promise to end the fighting and send our troops back home-” he started, but he was interrupted by millions of cheers from the onlookers. After a minute or two, everyone got quiet again. “I will send them home and have some laws to prevent future Americans from warring with others. One of which, I will tell you now. Similar to a law in England, America will, too, pass a law stating that only humans with their element mastered are able to get into college. This is to prevent any rouge magicians from appearing.” the man finished. There were more cheers. I saw myself topping over in anger and the wind picked up to really high speeds. Soon enough, the entire crowd could feel the wind and stared at me. I saw Sophia, trying to calm me down, but then there was a blinding blue light and I couldn't see what happened next. I woke up in a cold sweat. I told myself that it was just a dream, not a vision of the future. “You alright?” I heard someone ask. I sat straight up and I saw Cole sitting by the bottom of the bed. “Cole?! What are you doing in here?” I yelled, trying to kick him off the bed, but failing. “Sophia and Percy left to go get some lunch. They told me to stay with you. Are you sure you're alright?” Cole said. “Yeah.” I answered. “Well, you were yelling in your sleep. First, you were yelling, 'What did you do to Cole?'. Then you yelled Sophia and Percy's names. Then, you got quiet for a while and screamed right before you woke up. During your sleep, you seemed to be in pain or something..” Cole explained. I shook my head and looked at the clock. It was a few minutes after noon. “Cole.” I said looking at him. “Hm?” “Mind if I get changed out of my pajamas?” I asked, pointing at the door to make him leave. “Oh, right. Sorry.” Cole said, getting up and heading out the door. When I heard the door click shut, I ran over to it and locked it. I looked through the keyhole and I saw Cole staring back. “Cole, you perv!” I yelled, banging on the door, “Stop trying to peep on me!” I apparently startled Cole and he went into his room, across the hall. Once I was sure that he wasn't going to be back, I changed out of my pajamas and into some normal clothes. I left the room and knocked on Cole's door, fixing the white ribbons I decided to put in my hair. “I wasn't peeping. I was just standing there.” Cole said, opening the door. “Sure.” I said sarcastically, “Where did Percy and Sophia go to get lunch?” He shrugged. “We can just take a walk around the city. We might run into them or something.” Cole suggested. I nodded and we left the hotel. We walked a couple streets down from our hotel, and then I saw something from the corner of my eye. It was the shadow person and it was following us. Actually, it looked more like it was studying us. “What are you looking at?” Cole asked in a hushed tone. “We are being followed.” I answered quietly. Cole's expression changed. It wasn't so carefree anymore, but it was serious looking. We kept walking as we were being watched. Suddenly, Cole grabbed my hand jerked me towards him and started running as soon as we saw someone with a gun walking towards us. That person looked familiar... Anyway, we were running away from the guy and we went into a small cafe to hide. “Table for two?” a waitress asked us sweetly. Cole nodded. “Hey, Cole?” “Yes, Cassy?” “You can let go of my hand now.” “Oh, sorry.” Cole said, releasing my hand. The waitress led us to a table and handed us menus. “When you're ready to order, I'm Cindy. Call me over when you are ready to order.” the waitress said, then walked off into the kitchen. “What's her name if we aren't ready to order?” Cole asked when she was out of earshot. I laughed and shrugged. Cole leaned back in his seat. Geez, Cole is such a show-off! He just yanks me away from a thug even though I could've fought that guy off. Then, he makes a joke like nothing even happened. “So, what are you having?” Cole asked. I looked over the menu. Hmm... grilled cheese with bacon sounds really good, but it seems like it would be incredibly greasy. After weighing out my options, I sighed and put the menu down again. “A salad with Italian dressing.” I answered. I'm not too fond of salad, but everything else seemed fatty and greasy. “What is it with girls and getting salad?” Cole complained. “Well, what are you getting?” I asked. “Probably nachos with meat, cheese and sour cream.” Cole answered, “Tons of meat and cheese.” he added with a smile. I threw my menu at him angrily. “Jerk!” I yelled. “What did I do?” Cole yelled back. “You're ordering good stuff!” “You can too!” “No I can't!” “Why not?” Cole yelled. Everyone in the cafe was staring at us. “Because.” I answered simply. Cole rolled his eyes. “I can't stand girls who think being skinny is pretty or whatever.” I heard Cole mumble. The waitress walked over to us. “Um... are you two ready to order?” Cindy asked us. “I'll have an iced tea and the Nacho Extravaganza with meat, cheese and sour cream.” Cole said. “Make that two!” I yelled quickly. Cole stared at me with disbelief. “Okay.” Cindy said, scuffling back off to the kitchen. “You sure you're gonna eat it?” Cole asked with a laugh. “Oh please. Of course I will.” I answered. “Whatever you say.” Cole said. While we were waiting for our food, Cole and I weren't really talking. No reason, as far as I know. I was playing around with my hair when I noticed Cole staring into nothing. I wonder what he's thinking of.. I just don't understand guys one bit. Then again, guys probably don't understand girls. And they never will. They will never grasp the concept of makeup and sleepovers where girls do each other's hair, and it's probably good that they don't. For a moment, I imagined Cole with eyeshadow and lipstick, hair pulled back into a ponytail and laughing with a bunch of girls while their nail polish was drying. And talking about boys. Hot boys. Celebrities. Cole stared at me as I burst out laughing. “What's so funny?” Cole asked, apparently wanting a good laugh too. I couldn't say anything because I was laughing so much. By the time Cindy arrived with our food, I had finished laughing. “Cole,” I said finally, “I am so glad that you aren't a girl.” I finished, followed by more laughing. Cole looked confused, shrugged and then started eating. Cole was finished eating his nachos and I was almost done with mine when Cindy brought the bill to us. We both stared at it, then each other. I turned it over. Okay, twenty dollars and sixty two cents. I dug through my pockets and I came across my money. Cole took out a twenty dollar bill. “I have enough to pay, but it's only enough for college tuition..” I said. “If I pay the rest, you must do exactly as I say for the rest of the day, got it?” Cole asked, taking out a five dollar bill as well. I hesitantly nodded and Cole handed Cindy the money. As soon as we exited the cafe, we were face to face with the thug we saw before going in. “Why, hello, kids.” the thug said with a smile. “Oh! I remember you!” I said. My mind immediately fell back to the airplane and when I was shot through the stomach. “You're Vincent.” I said, remembering his name. Vincent laughed. “Cole, I'm not going to let you live. You killed Nathan. Do you remember? You threw him out of the plane, along with a few innocent people. I don't think those innocents deserved that, did they?” Vincent asked. I turned to Cole. “You killed innocent people?” I asked. Cole shook his head. “No.. Did I? I can't remember... It's like that part of my memory is gone or something... Sure I've hurt people before... But never killed.” Cole said slowly. “I remember it. Yes. Those people's faces. Pure terror.” Vincent said with an evil smile. “Cassy, get out of here.” Cole demanded. “No! I can help!” I yelled back. “You said you'd do as I say. Now go!” Cole yelled. Cole turned away from me and punched Vincent through a window in a broken down building. “No!” I yelled again. Cole turned back to me and moved close to me. “I will make sure to come back, okay?” he said. He gave me a kiss on my cheek and ran off after Vincent before I had a chance to refuse. Standing exactly where I was, I rubbed my cheek lightly, as I thought to myself, he must think I like him... how absurd... Not knowing what to do, I walked to the main part of the city. While wandering around, I came across one place that caught my attention. It was a small shop and it didn't look like there were any costumers in there. In the window of the shop, there was this strange orb looking thing. I moved closer and saw there was a swirling green mist spinning around in it. It swirled and swirled and swirled. After a while of staring at it, the green mist seemed to be enclosing on my vision. It still swirled. The green mist was all I could see and I couldn't hear anything either. It was like I was just floating in some fantasy world. Then, it felt like it was raining, but, it was raining colors. It felt like raindrops, and it wasn't paint. The yellow fell first, then along came blue and silver. After that was red, purple, white and black. The green mist still swirled. Words seemed to be forming from the colors. Each color spelled out a different world. They spelled, you and another will save us all. The green mist kept swirling. I heard something behind me and I snapped out of my trance. “Cassy! There you are!” I heard Percy say. I turned towards him and Sophia. “Yup. Here I am.” I said simply. “Are you alright? Where's Cole?” Sophia asked frantically. I shrugged. “Well, let's go find him.” Sophia suggested. “I say lets keep him lost. There's something about him that just isn't right.” Percy said. Sophia glared at him. “We are going to go find him.” Sophia demanded, starting to walk away. Percy sighed and followed her. I followed them as well, knowing that the mist was still swirling... swirling. The three of us got out of the alley and onto the main streets. There were thousands of people walking up and down the sidewalks. “Cassy, where did you last see Cole?” Sophia asked. I pointed from where we came. “He chased after a thug and told me to stay away.” I answered. “If he said that, we should just leave him be.” Percy said, walking down the sidewalk. Sophia rolled her eyes and ran after him, yelling. I followed them. Geez, what is Percy's problem with Cole? There's nothing weird about him, is there? Why does Cole follow us anyway? He just met us on the airplane. Should I even be trusting him? He could be part of that weird group that has been trying to kill me. Then again... can I even trust Sophia and Percy? I only met them recently and... why would Sophia even give me a free ride on an airplane with her? Then there's Percy... I consider the three of them my friends, but the truth is, I barely know anything about them. I shook my head. I can't think about that now. “So, where did the two of you go?” I asked, distracting myself. “Sophia and I had lunch.” Percy answered. “Percy, how old are you?” I asked. I couldn't help but ask. He seems to like Sophia and if he's seventeen like I thought, there's a few years age difference. “I'm twenty three. Why do you ask?” Percy answered. “Twenty three?! I thought you were seventeen!” I said, confused. “Do I really look seventeen?” Percy asked, more confused than me. I nodded. “You even sound seventeen.” I added. Sophia laughed and agreed. “Whatever.” Percy said, turning away from us. “Hey, what's with that huge crowd over there?” he asked. I looked over at the crowd amazed. There were millions of people standing, all looking at something. I squinted to get a better look at what they were looking at. It seemed to be a podium. Was anyone speaking? No... I don't see anybody.. “Let's go check it out.” Sophia suggested. I shrugged. “Why not? I'm curious.” I said. The three of us headed into the crowd. I pushed people away from me so we could get a good look. The people I pushed out of the way were not happy about it, but we worked our way into the middle part of the crowd. Suddenly, a person appeared at the podium and the crowds around us roared in claps and cheers. Wait... why does this seem familiar? The man raised his hand in the air and everyone got quiet. Hang on... this is... I'm living the nightmare I had! As the man spoke, exactly what he had said in my dream, I tried not to panic. Maybe... I can find a way to talk to the new president to make him not pass that law... I can't panic now. I don't want to cause harm to others. But, if I can't talk to the president, how do I master my element? I suddenly saw the green spiraling haze cloud my view once again. I tried to swat the mist away, but the mist itself was spelling out a word. No... two words. intense emotions. What's that supposed to mean? The haze faded away as the president was closing up his speech. “Sophia.” I said, feeling unbalanced for a second, “We have to talk to the president.” I finished. Sophia and Percy looked at me. “And how exactly do you plan to do that?” Percy asked. “Follow me.” I said, pushing more people away from us and out of my way. I kept pushing them away and I reached the area by the podium. The president was still up there and now that I was there, I had no idea what to do. So, I acted impulsively. “Sophia, Percy. Distract the crowd.” I commanded. I jumped onto the platform the president and the podium were on. I grabbed the president's hand and started running as fast as I could. I managed to sneak into an abandoned building. The president started to yell at me, but I covered his mouth with my hand. The Secret Service passed by the building without even looking. I released my grasp over his mouth when I knew the Secret Service was far enough away. Holy crap... I just kidnapped the president! “Unhand me, hooligan!” the president yelled. I sighed. Hooligan? Who uses that word anymore? He's older than I thought he was. “I'm not going to hurt you. I just want to ask you a question. You know that law about the colleges you are planning to pass to prevent rogue magicians? Won't it cause more to appear? They would be infuriated they can't get into college and they are going to blame you, and find a way to hurt you.” I explained. “This is none of your business, child. Based on your accent, you're not even American. Which means either it doesn't matter to you or you're a terrorist.” the president said with a smug smile. “I'm here because England passed that law! I wanted to get into college here!” I said. The president shook his head. “I'm not going back on a law because one person doesn't like it.” he said. “Hey, what's your elemental power?” I asked. “It doesn't matter to you.” he answered. “Have you mastered it?” I shot back. “Yes.” he answered a few seconds later. “I'm passing this law. My parents were killed by people with no control of their element. Nothing you do or say will make me change my mind.” the president said. “Please? Pretty please with a cherry on top?” I asked hopefully. The president raised an eyebrow. I sighed. “Fine.” I said, “I'll lead you back to the main part of the city.” The president nodded. I left the building, followed by the president, disappointed. As we were walking back, I saw Percy. He saw us too and he ran over to us. He didn't look too happy with me either. “There you are! What were you thinking?!” Percy yelled. “I wasn't.” I admitted. The president backed away from Percy. “You're a vampire. A filthy vampire.” the president stated, making a face like he had just smelled sour milk. “He won't hurt-” I started. “Maybe I should.” Percy said, cutting me off. He sounded serious again, like when we confrounted my dad. He definitely sounded like he was twenty three now. The president glared at Percy. “I can find my way back on my own. When I leave, make sure that filthy vermin doesn't follow me.” the president said, walking away. “I hate that guy.” Percy and I said at the same time. We laughed. “Let's go check on Sophia. She's distracting the crowd by playing her violin. She's really good at it too.” Percy said, starting to walk away. “Yeah.” I agreed, following after him. Within a few minutes, we heard the violin music fill the air around us. Percy stepped in frount of me. “Would you care for a dance, Miss. Cassandra?” he asked, offering a hand. “Percy, I have two left feet when it comes to dancing.” I admitted with a laugh. “Oh, it's not that hard. Here, let me help you.” Percy offered. He took my hands and led as we started to dance. I stumbled. “Ugh. I told you I can't dance.” I said, backing away. “Just keep practicing.” he insisted, taking my hands again. Though, he grabbed my hands too quickly and it caused me to fall on top of him. I rolled off of him when I realized I fell on him. “Sorry.” I said. Percy burst out laughing. I started laughing too. “Let's go find Sophia.” I said with a smile. Percy stood up too and we started to walk towards the violin music. Sophia had just finished playing by the time we found her. She was putting away her violin and I saw a man go up to her. “Hello, Miss.” the man said. “Hi. What can I help you with?” Sophia asked, looking up from her violin case. The man handed her a card. “I represent the Philharmonic Orchestra and we would be delighted to have you join us.” the man said. “It's okay that I'm an elf, right?” Sophia asked, turning the card over to see if there was anything written on the back. “It's completely acceptable.” the man answered. “Answer back within the next week, please.” The man walked away as we headed towards Sophia. “Wow! That's really awesome, Sophia!” I said with a smile. “Did you talk the president out of it?” Sophia asked. I shook my head. “He's a jerk.” Percy added. “He doesn't like vampires which probably means he doesn't like elves either.” I explained. “Hey, it's getting dark. Let's head back to the hotel. Cole should show up tomorrow.” Percy said. Sophia nodded. “You guys go ahead. I feel like window shopping. I'll be back later, okay?” I said, waving goodbye as I walked away. I wandered into one shop that looked like it sold Native American things. Just looking at the things made me feel safe for some reason. I went past the wooden carvings of bears and buffalo and I saw beautiful dream catchers. They all had different colored feathers hanging from them. One of them had orange and red feathers and another had black and pink. I stood there for a while looking at them and then I decided I should leave and head back to the hotel with Sophia and Percy. As soon as I left the shop, I saw that shadowed person in frount of me. “Why are you and your thugs after me?!” I yelled. “You and Cole are special magicians.” the shadow person said, “And I didn't expect Cole to be so easily captured. He gives in too easily when your life is put on the line.” “He's... You... What have you done to him?” I asked. “I have him locked up in a cage.” “Why do you need us?” “If I am to enslave every living being, I need both of your powers.” the person said, stepping out of the shadows. She was tall with long orange hair and yellow eyes. “Who are you?” I asked. “My name is Summer.” she answered. “Where are you hiding Cole?” I asked. “If you don't make a fuss, you can be locked up with your boyfriend.” Summer said. “He isn't my boyfriend!” I yelled, “I'm just a girl from England, with no control of her element, trying to get into college!” “You haven't mastered your element? We can't have that.” Summer said, grabbing my wrists tightly. Her sharp nails dug into my skin, making it hurt too much to move. “You're coming with me.” Summer said, hitting the back of my neck hard, causing me to fall unconscious. When I woke up, I had no idea where I was. Everything looked machinelike. I noticed Cole in a corner by himself, then I realized... Summer had put me in the cage too. “Cole! Are you okay?” I asked, running over to him. He looked at me quickly. He had cuts all over his face, like he was beaten up. “Cassy?” he asked. Cole sounded really tired and weak. It was hard to hear his voice. “It can't be you... She promised not to capture you.” he said, shaking his head. “But she did.” I answered, sitting next to him. Once I got a better look at him, he looked just as bad as he did after the plane crash, if not worse. “What have they done to you?” I asked. “Ford and Caroline... they keep forcing me to transform. I can't real whats real or not anymore... My memory feels all messed up.” Cole answered. “Transform? What do you mean?” I asked. “You'll find out when you master your element.” I heard someone say. I turned around and saw Vincent standing in the cage with us. “Stay away!” I yelled, standing up. The wind started to pick up. “Ooh. Scary.” he said, grabbing me by the back of my shirt. Vincent brought me out of the cage, still gripping me tightly. As if on cue, Ford showed up and headed into the cage. Cole stood up weakly. Ford closed in on him and kicked him into the bars of the cage. “Stop it!” I yelled, “Stop hurting him!” Vincent grabbed one of my wrists. Cole tried to stand again, but Ford punched him back on the ground. I closed my eyes. I can't watch helplessly! I have to do something! I don't want Cole to die! He can't... But what can I do? I can't do anything. I'm weak... No! I can't have any doubts! I have to save him! Because I... love him. All of a sudden, I felt a surge of energy pass through me, like I wasn't weak anymore. I opened my eyes and looked back at Vincent. “Can't watch your boyfriend bleed to death?” Vincent asked with a laugh. I kept thinking over and over for him to release me. Then, a blast of wind distracted Vincent enough so I could break free of his grip. I told the wind to pick up speed and make him go through the wall. Not even two seconds later, Vincent was through the wall. I then realized that this power is how it feels when you've mastered your element. I ran into the cage and I had the wind force Ford out of the cage. I saw Cole, with blood all around him. I sat next to him and tried to find his pulse. It was there, but it was very faint. How can I help him? Light magic is the only magic that can heal someone. If I remember correctly, there is no possible way for me to have light magic along with my wind magic because if there's more than one element, the body can't withstand it and you, well, die. So, how am I supposed to help? For some reason, my mind went back to those old animated movies about princes and princesses. They way the guy always gets the girl awake is by kissing her... Would that actually work? I mean, this isn't a fairy tale like that where they live happily ever after. And besides, if it was that way, I would be the one in Cole's position because I'm not a guy. I bent down closer to Cole. Though, it wouldn't hurt to try, would it? I bent down more and kissed Cole. I sat back up. I foolishly expected him to wake up, but he didn't. I felt for his pulse again and it seemed weaker than before. Great. If my kiss did anything, it brought him closer to death. That's nice to know. Suddenly, I saw him start to move. He sat straight up and looked at me. “You're a good kisser.” he commented. I turned away, embarrassed. “At least you're awake now.” I mumbled, “Let's get out of here.” “Go ahead, but your elf friend isn't leaving.” I heard Summer say. I turned towards her and I saw Sophia next to her, being held by Granville and Wellington. “What do we need to do if we want Sophia to be safe?” I asked. “Transform for us.” Summer said. “Huh?” I asked. “As mentioned many times before, you and Cole are special. One of you has the power to transform into a demon, and the other, an angel.” Summer explained. “You transform by thinking of someone you love.” Delaware added, joining everyone. “So, we transform once and Sophia is free?” Cole asked. Summer nodded. Cole sighed and lowered his head. A minute later, a deep red light filled the area and it seemed to be coming from Cole. All at once, he changed. He turned into a very dark creature. He had one red eyes and one green eye. His hair looked feathery and he had wings twice as big as his body. Where have I seen this before? I quickly recalled everything that happened on my journey to America and I remembered the creature. It was after I blacked out because of the gunshot. I had a dream about him. “Your turn.” Delaware said, unimpressed by Cole's transformation. “We're waiting.” Vincent said. I inhaled deeply. If it'll make Sophia safe, I have to. I thought good thoughts about everyone I loved. I was then releasing a bright blue light. Everything after that light was really confusing and too hazy to recall. I couldn't remember what anyone said, but I remember the scene and everyone's expressions. The light had vanished and Summer appeared to be clapping. The demon Cole said something, Summer nodded and the thugs holding Sophia set her free. Summer said something and Cole looked shocked, scared and angry. Then, Sophia changed into Caroline. Curse those faeries and their ability to shape shift! Speaking of curse, Cole seemed to be throwing a lot of them around. He looked furious. He said something to me and I nodded. Apparently, it was the way to change back into me because the blue light shone again and I could remember what happened afterwards. Cole changed back into normal Cole. He seemed to want to fight. “Cole.” I whispered, “There are seven of them and two of us. We can't fight them off.” “You get Summer before she gets away. I can handle the others.” Cole said, pointing to Summer who was running outside. I hesitated a moment, but I chased after her. “Summer!” I yelled out, running after her, “Why are you running, you coward?” She kept running, then we reached a beach, where she stopped running and faced towards me. “Cooperate with my orders or else everyone on this beach dies.” Summer threatened. I looked across the beach, which happened to be extremely crowded. “You're bluffing.” I said, crossing my arms. “Am I?” Summer asked, facing the beach. Suddenly, tons of waves started to form. “I can make a tidal wave that can wipe out everyone here. Would you like them all to die?” Summer said. She has a water element... With a name like hers, I would've thought she had a fire element, but this makes sense too... For the most part. I looked up at the sky and I saw a dark storm cloud pretty far in the distance. I made the wind that was by the dark cloud bring it by the beach. Soon enough, it started raining, followed by rumbles of thunder. The lifeguards told the swimmers to get out of the water and leave, just in case it gets bad. I saw that Summer realized that I had moved the cloud and she got angry. She started to manipulate the water in the air and made the rain drops heavier. The rain actually started to hurt. Both of us were getting soaked, while the people who were at the beach were taking refuge in their cars. I quickly darted away from Summer and ran into the nearest shop. Luckily, the shop I went into was pretty packed, so I moved into a large group of people and pretended to be looking at the array of necklaces. I saw Summer enter the shop too and she was looking around for me. One of the people by me had put down her umbrella to try on a necklace. As she was showing it off to her friend, I took her umbrella and left the store quickly. I opened the umbrella and I waited for Summer to realize I left. If I have to fight her, I don't want to be completely drenched. And seriously, that rain really hurt when it pelted you. Summer left the shop and saw me. She walked over to me. “What's the point of enslaving every living being?” I asked her. “I love power. The ability to make people do what I want and when I want it. Think about it. If I enslave every living thing, I can stop wars and make plants grow faster so nobody goes hungry. I can even make the racism end. Wouldn't it be a good life? To save the world from its problems, I only need you and Cole. Two lives taken can save billions of others.” Summer explained. “If you hate wars and fighting, why does Vincent kill people?” I asked. “What? Vincent would never kill anyone.” Summer said. “He tried to kill me and Cole. He had a gun and he hurt innocent people.” I said. Summer started to look serious. “He what?” Summer asked, “Vinny told me that he wasn't going to kill anyone if I let him carry a gun. He said it was only to intimidate you and Cole. If what you say is true, he's dead.” “So, let's postpone this fight until you find out the truth, okay?” I suggested. Summer looked at me, then turned and started walking back to their headquarters. I followed her. When we got to the headquarters, Cole was still fighting off Caroline and Vincent. The others were knocked out. He just beat off Caroline when he saw us. “Cole, are you alright?” I asked. Cole nodded, brushing dust off his shirt. Summer kept walking towards Vincent. “What's going on?” Cole asked me in a whisper. “Summer isn't completely bad.” I answered quietly. “Vinny.” Summer said, stopping in frount of him, crossing his arms. “Hiya, babe. What's up?” Vincent asked. “What exactly happened on the airplane?” Summer asked. “Not much.” he answered simply. “Okay. Now why don't you tell me the truth?” Summer demanded. At first, Vincent looked confused, then shocked and he glared at me. “I have proof something happened.” I said, walking over to them. I lifted my shirt slightly, showing my stomach and the bullet hole through it. Summer looked at my wound and back at Vincent as her eyes started to water. “You promised you wouldn't shoot anybody!” Summer yelled, pushing Vincent away from her. “The kid was taunting me and I lost my temper.” Vincent said, unaffected by the pushing. “That doesn't matter!” Summer yelled. She stopped trying to push him away and after a minute, she took a ring off her finger and threw it on the ground. “We aren't going to get married. You betrayed my trust.” Summer said quietly, trying to hold back tears. “I'm done with you!” she yelled, stomping on the ring once, breaking it into three pieces. Summer darted out of the room, heartbroken. Vincent hesitantly picked up the pieces of the ring and looked at us. He started to walk towards us slowly. “You two aren't going to be leaving this building alive.” he threatened in a low voice. “You're the one who made the mistake of shooting Cassy in the first place. Why are you blaming it on us?” Cole asked. Vincent charged at Cole, pushing him onto the floor. He was punching Cole wildly. Vincent was too angry to realize that his back was wide open. I threw whatever was lying around at his back, which were mostly random hammers and other tools. Eventually, Vincent stood up and stared at me. Soon, that green mist appeared again and spelled out I control this mist. Vincent controls the mist?! Wait... it first said you and another will save the world.. Summer said if Cole and I were to die, the other lives would be saved. Then it told me, as what I now realize, how to master my element, which was needed so I could transform. The mist vanished as I saw Cole kick Vincent across the room. “Cassy, get the police! I can't hold him off forever!” Cole yelled. I nodded and left the building, very much alive.
It was still storming hard when I got outside. I spotted a police car not too far away and I ran towards it as fast as I could. I knocked on the window and the policeman inside looked back at me. He got out of his car. “There's trouble! Please help!” I said. He policeman shifted his weight onto one leg. “How do I know this isn't one of your teenage jokes?” he asked. “Would I seriously risk jail to play a prank? Can't you just trust me?” I asked, getting annoyed. The police officer, who I later found out was named Officer Kingsley, agreed to follow me. We headed back to the building.
Vincent had his gun pointed at Cole. They looked our way and they both saw me with the officer. “Okay, kid. Distract the guy's attention and make him go after you. I'll get him handcuffed.” Kingsley whispered to me. I hesitantly nodded and ran over to the two of them. I observed the scene quickly, kicked the gun out of Vincent's hand, made a face at him and ran. Vincent immediately chased after me and he knocked me to the ground, both of his hands tightly grasped on my neck. It was getting harder and harder to breathe, but within a few seconds, I saw the handcuffs go around Vincent's wrists. Kingsley pulled him off of me and I stood up, trying to get my breath back. Kingsley took Vincent out of the building and Cole and I saw him throw Vincent in the backseat of the police car. As the car drove away, Cole turned to me and hugged me tightly. “Never use yourself as bait again.” Cole said sternly. “There you are!” I heard Percy yell. I saw him running towards us and he was followed by Sophia. “We were looking for you two all night! What have you been doing?” Sophia asked. “Oh, not much. Just defeating our enemies and having Cassy master her element.” Cole answered. “Seriously? That's awesome, Cassy!” Sophia said. Percy nodded and then yawned. “I don't know about anyone else, but I'm tired from searching all night and morning. Let's get to the hotel and get some sleep.” Percy suggested. He and Sophia started walking away. “Hey, Cole?” “Yeah, Cassy?” “You can stop hugging me.” “Oh, sorry.”

8 Years Later
I looked around for our usual spot. I didn't see him here. Hm. Maybe he's running late? We did say we were meeting at 7, right? It's the middle of January, so the sun is already starting to set. I hope that he didn't lose his way again. He tends to be kinda forgetful. “Sorry I'm late.” I heard him say. I turned around. “Oh, it's fine. Let's go get our table.” I said. We took a seat and the waitress came up to us. “Nice to see you two again. Will you be having the usual?” she asked. I nodded. “You know us too well, Cindy.” he said with a laugh. Cindy smiled and walked back to the kitchen to drop off our order. “We should try to get something different for once. You know, switch it up?” I suggested. “What? You're gonna get salad while I sit here and get the good food?” he asked. “I am not going to eat salad. Salad sucks. Even with tons of dressing on it, it still sucks.” I said. “I second that.” he said. “So, how has your new job been? What are you working as? Didn't you say it was... um.. a philosopher?” I asked, trying to remember. He laughed. “I'm not a philosopher. Forensic scientist.” he corrected. “I was close enough, wasn't I?” “Not quite. Oh yeah! I forgot! Here.” he said, taking a letter from someone out of his pocket. “Who's it from?” I asked, turning it over. “It's from Percy and Sophia. Go ahead, read it.” he said. I took the letter out of the envelope and I started reading it.
Hey Cole. How are you and Cassy? Sophia and I are doing well. It's too bad you didn't decide to go back to England with us once you both finished college. Sophia's career has really taken off. She was in the Philharmonic for a while, as you know, but she was tired of the other people saying that elves were stupid and whatnot, so she actually got together a bunch of elves that were musically inclined and she made her own, all elf, orchestra. I think their better than the Philharmonic, but of course, that's my biased point of view. Oh, and you thought that people were annoyed about elves, vampires and faeries, well... Things got kinda out of hand when people found out that Sophia and I were married. And that we have Matt. Matt is only six years old, but the people in his school are already making fun of him for his race. They're calling him Matt the Mutt. Sure, he's half elf and half vamp, but... Matt's starting to realize that he is indeed different. Yes, he is one of the few half breeds. You know, like half elf, half human and things like that. We're trying our best to keep Matt oblivious to all of this racism, but it's getting harder and harder as he gets older. Anyway, enough of this negativity. You guys should visit us sometime soon. We keep talking about you guys and Matt really wants to see you. The last time you saw him was when I think he was... about a year old? So, tell us when you're going to be visiting so Sophia and I can get things together. It'll be nice to see you again. From Percy, Sophia and Matt.
I folded the letter back up and stuffed it in the envelope. “He's right. We haven't seen little Matty in a long while.” I said, placing the letter on the table. “I think we should visit in a month or so. What do you think?” he asked. I nodded in agreement. I saw Cindy start to come back with our food so I brushed the little leftover crumbs from whoever was sitting here last and I accidentally pushed the letter off the table. “Oh I'm sorry! I'll get-” “No, you can stay there. I'll get it.” he said. He went under the table to get the letter. Gosh, I'm not helpless. I don't care about getting my clothes a little dirty on the floor. “Hey Cassy?” he asked. I looked down at him. He was down on one knee and he was holding something. “Will you marry me?”

I say I'm over him, I say I hate life. Those are simply lies, not to you, but to myself. Life is complicated, But love is harder. I wish I would move on, But how can I? When my love is strong. She's the one that makes him hurt. I'm the one that makes you laugh. She makes you frown, I make you smile. It was you and I, who weren't meant to be. Not you and her. But if she's what you want, Then you can have her.

My heart aches with every beat. Tears come to my eyes, every time I see you hurt. She wasn't meant for you, but I wasn't either. I want you to be happy, to laugh and smile all the time. But if you stay with Sara, that'll never happen. Give up on her, Evan, she has given you away. Take Nadia, since age keeps you from taking me. All I want is to see you smile, not a fake smile, or a temporary one. I want your laughter to come from your heart, I want to see the smile reach you eyes. But if you stay with Sara, that'll never happen. Evan, sweetheart, I love you.
