It was evening, the sun was setting, and Kyllae had just finished her run. Candidate chores were a bore, and what she really looked forward to was a good bit of exercise at the end of the day. Whether it was a swim, a run, or something else, she always enjoyed herself. It was a time to think and be alone with her thoughts, and to enjoy High Reaches. Or, at least try to. Admittedly, Kyllae missed the tropical beaches she used to call her home, and while High reaches was a world apart, literally, from Southern, it…had it’s own special charm.
She sat on the grass, legs tucked carefully underneath her, as she nibbled at a piece of bread she’d obtained from one of the kitchen workers. Thankfully, they seemed pretty happy to give her leftover bits from dinner, which she appreciated greatly. By the time she was done with her daily workout, she was usually pretty darn exhausted, and in need of a bit of food. Sighing contentedly, she brushed a stray lock of hair from her face, watching with the sunset with eager eyes. She drank in the colors, and the silhouette landscape of grays it painted. She had her evening planned already. After this, she’d take a bath, head over to the candidate barracks, chat with some other girls, catch up on any gossip, talk about the clutch, go to her room, practice a bit of math, and then catch some shuteye. Candidacy did not afford her the luxury of sleeping in, but it was a small sacrifice to make, if it meant she could stand, and hopefully impress. Sleep could be put on hold, there were dragons to be had!
Tearing her eyes away from the sky for a moment, she glanced around, taking in the people around her; all going about, working on this or that, and the one or two dragons in the air, or those catching the last few rays of sun on their ledges. Absolutely fantastic. And she, she was a part of it. Now that was a good feeling. To be part of something bigger, something more important. She wasn’t just Kyllae anymore, she was candidate Kyllae, and she was at High Reaches, and she…she had the chance to be somebody. Now that feeling was intoxicating. She often wondered if the other candidates felt the same way. Oh well. She could ask around, it wasn’t like this place was starved for people, despite the fact that it was a bit under populated.

Panata was happy to be outside with his chores behind him, the cool evening air embracing his body like a well-needed hug after moments of work, and as the happy churrs of Meisir echoed from overhead he felt himself grow more and more content. His small steps carried him with a good stride out into the open and away from some of the crowds, and as he managed to get into the grasses Panata reached and stretched his arms above his head.
The motion seemed to garner more attention from Meisir who responded with a loud trumpet, clearly glad that Panata was feeling chipper now that he was outdoor. The bugle was loud and crystal clear, sending a small shiver up the youth's spine, and he looked over his head at the hovering Brown.
"Meisir, I know you're excited to be outside as well, but we mustn't be so loud. Many people have come out here to enjoy the silence that the evening brings, not to be interrupted by your happy sounds."
The scolded was weak at best, both the Flit and Panata knew it, and the Brown bugled again before swooping down and around the boy's feet. He had to take care in walking, his gaze moving from ground to firelizard to up again, but apparently it was not enough care as Panata felt his foot come into contact with something sturdy as he attempted to swing it upwards.

Enjoying the sunset and overall at peace with the world around her, Kyllae hadn't been paying any particular attention to the person walking towards her. At least, not until a foot came in contact with her side. Well...being kicked wasn't exactly in her evening plans, but she would just have to deal with it. She let out a little yelp, quieting herself as soon as possible, in order to retain what she hoped was a fraction of her dignity, as she leapt up, startled and wide eyed.
"Oh, hello," she blurted out, not wanting to seem rude and stand there gaping. She giggled almost immediately after she said this, partly from embarassment, and partly from actual amusement. Well, that certainly wasn't what she had been expecting, but at least it was...exciting? "I'm Kyllae," she offered, extending a hand in greeting. She wasn't sure who this was, but she didn't want them to feel bad if they'd kicked her, it hopefully wasn't on purpose, and she didn't want to make them feel awkward by having to apologize, and all of that. Still, she couldn't resist a bit of teasing. "Quite a good kick you have there," she chuckled, good naturedly of course. She had no reason to be harsh to this person, not yet, anyway.
She looked over Panata, and...unfortunately, took a moment debating on gender. After a moment, she felt fairly positive that this stranger was of the male persuasion, but still, one couldn't always be too sure, especially at the Weyr. There were all sorts of strange people running about, with questionable gender and sexuality, and Kyllae had learned very quickly not to judge too much based on appearance. Usually she waited for the person to introduce themselves, that usually offered a clue, if nothing else. She flashed Panata a smile, and curtsied with the hand not extended for shaking. She knew her manners, and even if she didn't always choose to act on them, she was eager to make friends at this strange new Weyr, and for the most part people seemed to appreciate her more when she put a bit of presentation into introductions and things of the sort. Formality wasn't something she was particularly fond of but...if it won a few people over for her, she would do whatever it took.

The first thing Panata did was bow himself over, nearly hunched in half, as the realization of what he'd done came sweeping over his mind. He'd kicked someone, even if it was entirely an accident, because he'd been careless and focusing too much on things that weren't necessary. He clasped his hands on his thighs as his shoulders tensed and slowly his words started to spew out.
"I'm sorry! I'm sorry! I should have been watching, I'm so sorry!"
Even with the girl before him reaching her hand out and introducing herself, adding a joke to the mix, he kept himself bowed over. It was only after the speaking had stopped and he watched the girl's body move into the form of a curtsy did Panata look up, a worried expression on his face. He appeared to be truly sorry, far more then he should be for something that was an accident, and above him Meisir seemed to echo his young master's feelings.
He was clearly overreacting but at least he'd lifted his head up to look at the person he was saying sorry to. Slowly his body unbent itself and he stood properly, handing moving from his thighs to be pressed together in a nervous posture, and he bit his lower lip as he looked Kyllae up and down.
"My name is Panata and. . .are you sure you're okay? I really didn't mean to kick you, I was just trying to get Meisir out of my way and wasn't watching. If I've hurt you I'll find a way to properly apologize, so . . ."
Meisir slowly moved down as Panata talked and landed himself on his shoulders, taking care to try to keep balance as the Candidate moved from foot to foot in a slow motion.

Kyllae blinked a few times in surprise at Panata's apologetic explosion. Oh dear, someone was a little high-strung, weren't they? "S'all right, really," she replied, still smiling. Since he didn't seem up to shaking hands at the moment, she withdrew hers, running her fingers through her hair instead.
To say he was overreacting was an understatement. But, if anything else, Kyllae found it amusing. Poor...guy? Panata wasn't a name she immediately identified as male or female, so...she would just refrain from any gender specific remarks. Either way...Panata was kind of cute. Not in a way that Kyllae was attracted to him, but...he was adorable like a puppy! At least to her. And he was small! Not that he was short or small in particular, it was just that...Kyllae saw most people as being short, since she was tall in comparison. She wanted to hug him, but then again, she just plain liked hugs. Seeing as how much he was freaking out, she very seriously pondered the idea of a hug, but then again, he might not appreciate it. She would wait and see.
"Don't worry about hurting me. I'm not fragile, I swear." And, not easily embarassed or shy, Kyllae pulled up her shirt a little, to just above her navel, and traced the part of the knotted scar that was visible. "I've come out of a lot worse things than kicking," she stated, proudly. She pulled her shirt back down, adjusting it as necessary so that it fit her in the same manner as before she had disturbed it. Looking good was very important, people, whether they admitted it or not, tended to assume things based on appearance, and Kyllae did NOT want to be looked down on for any flaw in her appearance.
Finished finger combing her hair, Kyllae gestured at the flit with a flick of her hand. "I'm assuming that's Meisir? He's awfully cute," she commented, leaning forward a little to look over the little brown. "How about this? To make up for kicking me, you can tell me how you came to be friends with such an adorable little fellow?"

When the young woman before him forgive him without any more thought Panata let the look of horror slowly ride from his face, and he reached up top pat Meisir beneath his wings. The Brown firelizard clearly enjoyed being touched there as he let out a small chirp, his eyes whirling green with happiness.
"Yes this is Meisir, and if you're okay with just that, then I'd be more than glad to allow you to become friends with him. He needs more interaction that just me."
Panata's cheeks were red at the compliment towards his Flit, whom he treasured more than most things in his life. Meisir demanded nothing of him but love and care, which he'd been more than happy to provide, and now that someone else was taking notice it made the young man proud.
He tried to think of how he could get his Flit to move towards the woman, to interact with her, when and idea came across him and he slowly pounded his lift fist into his right palm.
"You can probably just reach over and take him off my shoulders, he's used to being grabbed away by the other Apprentices at the Hall. . .but if you want to know a neat trick he likes to do, spread your arms out like this."
There was excitement in his voice as he moved his arms quickly, dislodging the Brown and sending him into the air. With his arms spread out he made the shape of a T, and above him Meisir churred as he flapped his wings in wait. After a moment or two the little Brown dashed down and flew under one of Panata's arms before landing on the other. It was a move they'd probably practiced enough times daily that counting had been lost, parts of Panata's lunch usually the reward, and both boy and firelizard seemed proud of it.
"Do you want to give it a try?"

Kyllae usually made it a point to compliment people on their flits, or dragon, if they had one. People liked to be complimented, sure, but Kyllae was well aware that one of the best ways to get on someones good side was to compliment the things that they loved. And she'd yet to meet someone who didn't like their flit, or dragon, so it was usually a good idea to make it a point of admiring them. Panata seemed to be no exception to this, as it was very obvious he was proud of his gorgeous little brown. Who wouldn't be?
She applauded when Meiser and Panata performed their little trick, and Kyllae bounced on her heels in excitement. "Oh, that's just too darling. I'd love to try!" she declared enthusiastically. Oh, she really was amazed. Kyllae had seen plenty of flits in her time, but she'd never actually seen one perform, and though she'd heard it was possible, she had somewhat doubted just how well a firelizard could be taught. Well, obviously, it was quite well.
"So, I just...do this?" she asked, spreading her arms out in the same way Panata had. She wasn't too concerned about whether she looked silly or not. As far as Kyllae was concerned, worrying about such things only took away from the fun in life! Why not enjoy yourself?

Panata flushed and bobbed his head as the girl before him spread her arms out, and he slowly moved his own up to force Meisir back into the air. He hadn't really tried the trick with others on the Brown, so he hoped the perhaps his little Flitt was smart enough to figure out what the posture meant.
"Go on Meisir, you can do it."
The Brown flit churred nervously as he spun in the air, and for a moment he looked like he was going to hesitate. Meisir seemed to know what was wanted of him, but not how to act it out.
Panata frowned slightly, not with anger but with thought, and once again the look of realization crossed his face as he jogged over and stepped behind Kyllae. With a happy smile he spread his arms exactly behind hers, though she seemed to tower over him, and he whistled to get his little Brown's attention.
That was all it seemed to take to get the firelizard moving, though as soon as he'd cleared the first set of arms Panata backed away and caused him to land instead on the young woman. Meisir's eyes went from green to a slight yellow, and he chittered nervously as he moved to keep his balance.
"There you go, see! You did it!"
The young man didn't feel bad about tricking him at all, considering the firelizard probably wouldn't remember this instance at all after a little while.

Kyllae's face lit up with sheer delight, as she felt Meiser land on her. Poor little guy seemed a little unsure of himself, if the eyes were any indication. "That was fantastic, Meisir!" Kyllae praised. She wasn't sure just how much he would understand her, but just about every creature could pick up on tone and attitude, she thought, and so even if he didn't understand her words exactly, he could hopefully tell that he'd made her happy? He really was a good little boy.
"How'd you teach him that, if I may ask?" Kyllae questioned, very much interested. After all, if she aspired to train her own flit one day, it would help if she actually knew how. And seeing as how the only trained flit she'd met was Meiser, that made Panata the leading expert on such matters.
She lifted the arm that Meiser wasn't on, and offered the palm for Meiser to sniff. Animals liked that, right? "Can I pet him, you think?" she asked, hopefully. If only she had some kind of treat to give him though, he'd done so well, it was a shame she had nothing more than kind words to give him.

"The trick was actually an idea from one of the other apprentices back at the hall, and he's the one who showed me how we could do it. I don't really remember the basics of it other than I didn't eat most of my lunches while Meisir was learning. I think the general idea was we held food out and he followed it over and over, making a pattern."
Panata bobbed his head in apology for not remembering so well, though he did give a nod of 'go ahead' when the girl asked if she could pet Meisir.
"Feel free, he's really friendly. He's a little nervous right now because he's never really been around girls, so I don't think he knows what to make of you. Meisir at least hasn't launched from your arm or tried to go between, so I think a little touching would do no harm for either of you."
The youth leaned forward and stroked along Meisir's back, taking care to pause and rub the ridges that rested over eyes that were slowly turning from yellow to green. Meisir indeed was well adjusted to be touched by others, and the feeling of Panata's hands on him only seemed to help calm him further.

Before touching Meiser, Kyllae offered her fingers for sniffing. Animals liked that, right? Helped calm them or something? Kyllae wasn't quite sure, but even if the action wasn't quite right, maybe he could sense her sincerity? Either way, after a moment, she extended two fingers, foregoing the eye ridges that Panata was attending to, and instead running her fingers down along the firelizards spine, applying light pressure. She hoped she wasn't doing anything wrong. She had less experience with flits than she did with dragons, so this whole thing was tantalizingly new. Hopefully she didn't do anything wrong, like scare the poor thing, or whatnot.
"He's really a good boy. I can't help but nottice how ill behaved some of the flits are around here, Meiser's a treasure," she decided, taking in the brown with her eyes. Kyllae was about to say something else. To go off on a whole other discussion and question Panata about the current clutch, opinions, what colors he thought might be in them, when something else caught her attention. Across the way, down by the lake, why, she could see Haath! She'd know that dragon anywhere. Surely that meant T'ka was nearby too, and Kyllae couldn't resist the chance to go have a rap session with her favorite cousin.
"My apologies, Panata, but I have to go do something now," she stated, giving a slight bob in place of a curtsey. She didn't want to disturb Meiser, after all. "If you could take him back, that'd be great, I don't want to scare him, or anything," she admitted. She didn't want to manhandle the brown by plucking him from her shoulder willy nilly

Meisir did not move away from Kyllae's fingers, instead pushing into them with affection as she rubbed his spine. He was quite the laid back brown when it came to others, his nature due to have many hands were always all over him at the Hall. Flitts weren't rare there, but it was still interesting amongst the boys and girls there to see a fellow Apprentice with one at their side.
"Thanks for the compliment, we're trying really hard together. I don't want others to think all firelizards can be nothing but trouble, so I'm hoping Meisir can set a good example."
As he spoke the boy reached over and took his flitt from Kyllae's body, as per her request, and he held him cradled like one would a small dog or a child. The Brown seemed quite used to this style of being held as it didn't strugle, instead his eyes turning from blue to a dull haze of green content.
"And do go ahead, it was nice talking to you and meeting you. Sorry again about kicking you before, but I hope we can see each other again sometime. I'm pretty certain that's possible, right?"
A smile broke out on his face as he nodded to his own question, letting Meisir free from his small grasp and into the air. The Brown let out a little trumpt as it flew upwards and ahead of Panata, the latter looking with his eyes to follow.
"I'll see you later then! Sorry again!"
And with that, he was gone, off to chase his brown who dashed into the distance.
