The very best apples were found at the top of the tree. Anyone knew that. Well, anyone she'd talked to, anyway, and Celandine was going to take their word for it. She wasn't very fond of apples as a whole, but then, maybe she just hadn't been eating the good ones. Either way, it was worth it to try.
Even if her bonded was making disapproving noises to her side, clearly thinking she was making a fool of herself.
Well, fine. Maybe it wasn't every day an Angeni hung suspended in the air, flapping her wings to stay relatively level while she nosed through the top branches of an apple tree. It was the only way she could think of to get to the good apples, though, and she wasn't going to sit back and let an opportunity pass her by because she might be embarrassed. Why, the notion itself was just silly.
Sniffing the leaves, giggling when they tickled her nose, she leaned forward, front legs kicking slightly at the branches as she searched for an apple. Something smelled sweet, that was for sure, and if she could just find it...
"Oh!" Gleeful, she chomped down on the apple, tugging back until it broke free from the branch. She heard rustling, and a series of thumps, which confused her for a moment.
She must've knocked more than one apple loose. Oh, well, it wasn't like there was --
A muffled noise below, and she realized that, crap, there probably was someone below. Ignoring Vrabel's mutternigs, she lazily spiraled to the ground, wings fanned out to keep her descent slow.
Biting through the apple, letting the remains fall to the ground, she chewed and swallowed. Once her mouth was free, she pricked her ears, lifting her head and peering about. "Hello? Is someone there?"

Allan had been trotting past a tree. He had been walking all day and decided to stop under it. Maybe he should have thought this plan through more. He heard the thumps and guessed what was coming. He managed to dodge all but the last one. It conked him on the head and rolled through his short mane, then off his back. That hurt!
That was when he heard the voice and replied a little more tartly then he might usually speak, "Oh sure, she asks if someone's there after making the apples try to kill me. Don't mind me." The gray stallion grumbled to himself, "You wouldn't be the first mare to completely ignore my existence ."

Well, well. Someone got bonked, apparently, and he was in no good humor from it. Ears flickering a moment, managing to smother a smile, Celandine tip-toed toward the sound of the voice. Grumpy or not, and she imagined she'd be a little grumpy if she'd been bombarded by apples, it had been her fault that he was struck, so she ought to apologize.
Furling her wings at her sides, she lowered her head a little, expression contrite. "I'm sorry. I was just trying to get a good snack, and I didn't know anyone was down below."
She went for a smile, tail swishing behind her, and asked innocently, "Are you all right? Aside from the bump, I mean."

He wanted to yell at her. Wanted to lash out and rage. Let her know exactly how not alright he was. He wanted to, but he wouldn't. It wasn't fair to take his anger at his situation out on her. Besides, she really was sorry. He sighed softly and shook his head slightly, "It's quite alright Miss. I understand that you didn't meant to do anything." He huffed slightly, "The simple answer to that question is no."

"Oh?" Sensing that all was forgiven, at least in respect to her, Celandine lifted her head and edged closer. From the tone of his voice, there was more on this stallion's mind than a bruise caused by an apple.
Maybe he needed a sympathetic ear? She could certainly do that. Why, that was the very reason she'd descended from the heavens!
Expression friendly, she asked, "Want to tell me about it? It's the least I can do, you know, after trying to knock you out."
She winked, letting him know she was teasing, and waited.

He gave a weak chuckle. Oh yes, there was a great deal wrong. He thought for a moment, taking in her friendly expression. Would it really be alright to share? He took a deep breath and said, "Well... It's like this. There's this mare. My herdmate actually and she's beautiful. Kind and sweet as her name, Candy Heart, implies. There's only one problem. She's taken by this...this...show off of a stallion named Rockstar. She doesn't even acknowledge I exist." He frowned and shook his head, irritated. He was feeling rather low at the moment.

Oh. Heart going out to him, compassion softening her face, Celandine closed the gap between them and slung a set of wings over his shoulder, hoping the contact would soothe. After all, he seemed to be a relatively friendly stallion - not even angry with her, really, all things considered - nursing a bruised heart.
Tail swinging, brushing against his back legs, she said kindly, "I'm sure she knows you exist. You're her herdmate, right? Her friend."
In her own lifetime, Celandine had never experienced a romance, wasn't sure if she actually would. Still, she could imagine it, and could imagine the pain of having someone you cared for right there, all the time, and yet... never there for you.
"Probably, she appreciates you more than you know. You're there for her, and you're not like this other stallion - you're part of a herd. You're family, really." What was that like? A small voice inside the back of her mind wondered. "She knows you exist, she just... probably doesn't realize that you care for her beyond family."

Allan snorted. Family? That was how Candy saw him. His heart sank. Her wings were warm. His eyes closed. "She's never going to see me as anything more..."
He looked so sad, with his head and tail drooping. Allan felt defeated and he didn't know what to do. "I don't know what to do any more. I've been wandering just to stay away from my teepee and all the lovey dovey atmosphere going on there."

"That's not necessarily true."
The poor thing, he really had no hope, did he? Well, she'd have to do her best to help change that! There was always hope, especially if he was close to his herdmate. Perhaps the mare would realize his feelings and return them, perhaps not. Still, if he gave up before he ever gave it a chance, there was no way to tell!
Then again, if she was in a relationship, it wasn't the best idea to go barging in and break things up. Love was complicated, after all.
Shifting her wings so that she could pat his side, she asked, "Why don't you tell me about her? The things you like, what she likes about you... how you met. It'll help me get a better idea of who she is, so I can give you some good advice."

"What's the point in telling you that? I just want to forget about her for a while." He snorted as he grew slightly agitated. He couldn't stand the thought of her with another stallion, doing things that should have been special between them. His tail lashed rapidly against his body, though there were no flies. He pawed the ground and paced back and forth, trying to form words, but the anger he felt constricted his throat.
