Name: Bashir
Age: 19
Gender: male
Sexual Orientation: heterosexual
Craft: none
Rank: candidate

History: Bashir's grandfather left his family in Igen Hold for reasons he won't explain to anyone (though rumor has it there was a lover's quarrel involved), traveling North to the High Reaches, a place as distant and alien as he could be. He was Searched by a High Reaches dragonrider. At his fourth hatching he Impressed brown Rath and became A'ram. Following the traditions of family-oriented Igen, A'ram acknowledged the son he had with a failed candidate who decided to stay on at the Weyr, Bashir's father. Musil, Bashir's father, failed to Impress a dragon, though he stood at every hatching that occurred between the time he turned thirteen and the time he turned twenty one. When it became obvious he wouldn't Impress he turned his attention to making a family. To his disappointment, he had two daughters before he finally had a son, Bashir.

With the hopes of his family resting on him to Impress, Bashir was raised with the idea that he had to become a dragonrider. Nothing less would be satisfactory or acceptable. When he was young this was fine because it meant he got to spend a great deal of time with his grandfather and Rath, but as he got older there was more pressure on him to excel. His grandfather made him practice flying on Wereth and executing flight drills. By the time he was fourteen he knew as much about being a dragonrider as a weyrling who had been training for a turn. He just didn't have a dragon yet.

He continued to fail to Impress turn after turn, his family began to make it clear how very not okay it was that he hadn't Impressed. Rather than bowing to the pressure, he worked harder. Bashir got into the business of looking out for newly Searched candidates when he was sixteen, much to his family's ire. They don't think he ought to be helping others to Impress when he had yet to do so. It became a source of familial tension and the cause of Bashir finally deciding to move into candidate's quarters, rather than living with his father. Since then, he and his family have been at odds but he hasn't given up training, but only because he likes Rath and the feeling is mutual.

Appearance: Although he and his family have been residents of High Reaches for several generations, Bashir's Igen heritage is plainly written in his face - and the rest of him. His hair is a very dark brown that is nearly black and tends to look a little reddish in certain kinds of light and tends to curl when short or wet, and his eyes are an even darker shade of brown that look nearly black in nearly all lights. He has a long, slightly aquiline nose over a reasonably well-formed mouth, though his lips are perhaps a little thin and not given much to smiling. His cheekbones are high but not overly prominent. Naturally, his skin is a golden brown that seems at odds with High Reaches climate. In terms of physique, he is not particularly tall - only about five feet ten inches - but he's got some decent muscles on him from training rigorously under his father and grandfather's critical eyes.

Personality: Bashir is a very driven, serious young man. His first priority is Impressing a dragon. His family would prefer that he Impress a bronze, but he would be happy with any dragon that chose him. The fact that he is driven translates unflatteringly into stubbornness. Once he sets his mind on something, very few things can sway him from his path, even when he's wrong, he will cling to an idea until he is forced to abandon it. He's much the same with people: once he decides how he feels about a person, it's going to be incredibly difficult to change his opinion. Fortunately, he isn't given to making snap decisions, and so a bad first impression will not ruin his view of another person for all time.

And, although he is serious much of the time, Bashir does have a dry sense of humor that occasionally comes out when he's relaxing with friends. Those who are less familiar with him may not realize this, though, because he has a very flat affect and doesn't smile when he cracks jokes or when he's amused. Bashir is most comfortable around his family and friends, who are usually male. Raised by a sexist family, Bashir's opinion of females is somewhat low, even those who manage to Impress gold dragons, and so he's not likely to befriend any female who isn't extraordinary in some way, and really it had better be more than one. Women are to be protected and sheltered. Aside from his hangups with women, Bashir is actually outgoing and likes people.

Bashir is a firm believer in the benefits of rank and seniority. He will not, however, follow orders blindly. If he thinks the orders are stupid he has an unfortunate habit of questioning them. Not arguing, per se, but questioning. It's a fine point that he makes on a fairly regular basis because he is quick-witted and an independent thinker. He just happens to believe that authority should be obeyed when it's correct and that a person who puts in the time deserves the respect that comes with it, working on the assumption he will be treated with similar respect if he ever attains any sort of rank or authority.

When it comes to taking risks, Bashir doesn't. Not really. He's not afraid of anything High Reaches Weyr can throw at him, though he has a healthy respect for the fouler-tempered dragons. Growing up with Rath made it easier for him to deal with other dragons. He is not someone who can be dared to do stupid things, though he won't rat out others who do them unless there's a possibility people or dragons will be hurt in the process. He doesn't like to see anything in pain, though he's fine slaughtering beasts as needed and butchering them. He just doesn't like to see them suffer.

Other: Bashir is literate and already knows the rudiments of riding dragons and caring for them.

He's going to acquire a firelizard egg that'll hatch into Shibra at some point in the very near future.

Hey Feylin, one thing I need you to change:

- High Reaches doesn't take candidates away from other Weyrs, not even in the past. So Bashir's grandfather would either have to be an HR native or someone who transferred for some reason of his own accord.

Otherwise, everything looks fine.
