Avery was not in the best of moods, Kesslan's tearful, somber face as they'd said goodbye still lingering in the back of her mind even as she went through the motions of charming smiles and eager hello's to fellow Candidates, Riders, and Staff at this new Weyr.
She firmly told herself that it was for her father and this clutch that she was here, in this far-too-cold, under-populated Weyr, and that soon enough she'd either be a rider or back in the warm climate she was used to.
For now, though, the only companions she had were Uuni, of all people, and two cousins she hadn't seen since she was a child; the daughters of her mother's older sister.
One of those cousins she wouldn't meet for another sevenday or so, but the other... Avery'd never been good at hiding her emotions, and anxious hazel eyes roamed the dining hall constantly from where she sat, a mug of hot klah between her hands.

Uuni had been sad for a little while. Kesslan had seemed more than a little distraught that they were leaving. And Uuni had done what Uuni normally did - say she'd try to keep in touch. It wasn't a lie persay, but the problem was that candidacy was just so distracting.
Naturally, Uuni's luck failed her, and Kesslan had managed to get a little firelizard egg from somewhere. She crossed her fingers that it was a dud, but she doubted she'd have as much luck. She couldn't exactly pawn it off on anyone, either, because Avery would be after her with a knife.
Speaking of Avery, Uuni looked over in the girl's direction and grinned. It was summer, and the temperature was perfect. The sun was out, not a cloud in the sky, but it wasn't a toasted muffin yet like Ista. Avery really had no reason at all for a sour face.
And, really, there was a clutch on the sands. Avery needed to get over it.
She was straddling the same bench Avery occupied with her back to the girl. Rather, she was leaning her back against the girl's right shoulder and looking off in a completely different direction. "It's such a nice day, and we're stuck here waiting for your cousin," Uuni stated with a long yawn and took a small sip of her own hot klah. "I wish it was winter." Not the winters in the beginning of the turn, but those that came just before. More fall, really. When the snow was soft and fresh, and the sun still poked out from time to time.

It was definitely a good thing that they both found comfort in physical contact, as that was one of the things that made Avery's new life easier. Shooting Uuni a scowl at her complaint, she rolled her eyes. Uuni had been ecstatic with the damned... What was it? Snow. Avery didn't like the stuff much. It was cold, then it turned to wet...
"Avery?" The bold voice was accompanied by a slight, waif-like young woman with short, choppy hair and Avery's bone structure, who grinned at the curly-haired young woman's confirmation.
"Then you must be her lover." A slim hand reached out to greet Uuni even as Avery scoffed in indignation. “I have not been provided with your name.”

Rolling her eyes in good nature, Uuni turned back to her klah and the surrounding kitchens. Compared to Ista, the whole place felt empty. Uuni wasn't sure yet if she liked the solitude.
It was so much easier to get lost in a crowd, too. Here, she'd probably stick out like a sore thumb.
A voice interrupted her thoughts and she swung one leg over the bench and reoriented herself in the direction of the sound. The klah was set on the table, and she turned her eyes towards Avery to see if this was, indeed, the person they were destined to meet.
Uuni laughed as she took the girl's hand to shake and added, "I can be yours, too, if you really want."
It was hardly that serious, but two could play in the 'let's unnerve immediately!' game. The family resemblance was more than obvious.

Avery's gaze was like daggers, aimed right at Uuni's eyes, before she sighed and patted the table, inviting Camryn to join them [on Avery's left side, not on the side next to Uuni]. "That's Uuni."
The short-haired young woman accepted and took a seat, leaning around Avery a bit to tilt her head at Uuni. "Oh, thank you for the offer, you are physically appealing to most, I'm sure. However, I only feel occasional stimulation toward the male sex." It was factual, polite, and she promptly continued as if the issue hadn't been raised. "I'm Camryn."
Avery nodded. "I figured. You look about the same as you did when we were younger, and Cannan's too old now to be a Candidate, isn't she?" It was true, Camryn was still rather short and skinny, unlike Avery who'd filled out immediately at the onset of puberty.
"Yes, she Wher-handles. I rather think she prefers it." A long pause as Camryn went somewhere in her strange mind and she came back with a smile and wave of her flamboyant hands. "Would you two like a tour?"

"I'll work on it," Uuni answered with a wink and leaned over Avery slightly to get a better look of Camryn. "She's in a bad mood," she explained for Avery so the young, curly haired girl didn't have to.
Finding her introductions in place, she leaned back and stretched a bit. However long they'd been sitting here, it was too long.
"A tour?" she piped up at the next words, however. "I'd love one. Can't speak for overly-ecstatic Avery here, though." She nudged the girl with her elbow to try and cheer her up some.
She was sure it wouldn't work.
