Appearance: Vanan is a man of surprises, though that's probably just because of his profession. For starters, when most people they hear they're meeting the handler of the gold watchwher expect to find a boyish woman, who wears baggy clothing and overall looks pretty tough. Vanan is all of that, save for the woman part. It would be very hard to even pass him off as a girl – though it has been tried – even if he didn't let his facial hair grow out into a dark, bushy beard. Even if that didn't tip you off and you thought you were meeting the bearded lady, his sheer size should convince you otherwise. Nobody fills a room quite like Vanan, with his imposing height and broad shoulders. He was originally a miner's boy and it shows. People have even speculated that he can carry six bags of firestone at one time, and that's only one finger. Some say he can break a man's arm with one toe. While he doesn't exactly live up to the legends, he is certainly a big man, and having a gold wher at his side does nothing to decrease his masculinity. He has enough chest hair for five men after all! His eyes are a bright blue and they crinkle in the corners when he smiles, which is a fairly common occurrence.

Size: 16 ½ hh, very solidly built
Personality: Compared to the majority of her kin, Vanask would be considered to be quite mild mannered. She doesn't snap at Hold children when they try to see how close they can get to her den. She doesn't bite new Handlers who want one of her precious eggs. She doesn't even leave the entrails of last night's meals strewn about the Hold to instil fear in the hearts of many. All in all, she's not exactly the most frightening wher on the block. But being the largest, she doesn't have to be. Vanask is described by her handler as being a witty, rather affectionate creature, frequently giving him "love bites" or playful shoves to show him how much she loves him. Despite her attitude towards Vanan, she is anything but a pet.
She is fiercely territorial, and though tolerant of other handlers/whers and firelizards in small quantities she has a definite loathing for dragons. If not instructed to keep quiet she will snarl and call from her cave until they have left. Though this kind of behaviour is frequently frowned upon by Searchriders whose dragons do not appreciate the treatment, it has kept wild whers far away from the Hold. Few wild whers would encroach on the territory of a gold and her family, and Vanask's aggression towards outsiders has prevented any but the stupidest from getting too close. She has good kin recognition, and will more readily share her lodgings with one of her own children than a wher from another place. Vanask will not, however, share her food with anyone, and will attack another wher if they even get too close to her while she's eating. Humans may be permitted closer than others of her species, but she makes it very clear when she does not appreciate company.
