How come Edward Cullen can read everybody's mind EXCEPT for Bella's? I don't understand what makes her so special. Is it her bratty attitude? Or perhaps her mary sue persona?
I dunno -- I just don't see it.

She doesn't have a mind, even fans are saying that.
But seriously, apparently, according to the books, she's special. I think they mean that special.

Unless she can spontaneously combust objects with her eyes or some other crazy s**t like that, she is pretty average.

Some chick moved in a while ago with us(She's run off to the army now, though) and she was a Twilighter and she tried to explain it to me. Apparently, Bella's 'vampire' power was this shield thing. :/ That she could magically use before she was a vampire.
Although, it's obvious that she has no mind.

Although, it's obvious that she has no mind. Yeah my friend told me that too. And as you said, it doesn't make sense that she would have that ability before she was a vampire. Did edward cullen read minds before he was a vamp? Could Jaspar (or emett, i cant remember which) control emotions before he was a vampire? No. So I don't see how this applies to Bella and nobody else.

Actually, while Meyer couldn't explain properly, I got the gist after rereading the series a couple of times.
Meyer intended for Bella to have sort of psychic ability, like how some people can see auras or some sort of extra brain activity. Meyer wanted Bella to have an ability that protected her mind as a last minute plot explanation, and the sparklepires with powers that affected the mind would be rendered useless when trying to utilize them on Bella.
When Bella became a sparklepire Meyer made it so that Bella could expand this 'shield' around other people as well, like a bubble.
Meyer left this entire explanation for the end of the last book, she also happened to introduce this ability at that time too.
Jasper's powers should not work on Bella since he deals with emotions and emotions are primarily chemical production in the brain, so Meyer never bothered to explain this.
Alice's powers should not exist at all because of the law of uncertainty, but if they did work, Meyer used the explanation that because Alice was human once, she can see the future events that contain humans and because she is a sparlklepire, she can see the events that pertain to sparklepires. They don't necessarily have to do with the mind so they would still work on Bella.

Psychic powers have been proven false- it's all suggestion from the person who's being read. Subconscious cues. Stuff like that.
It's all in my psychology course I'm taking.

Edit: I do not mean to offend anyone with that post by lumping the mentally challenged with Bella, they have a legit condition, Bella has no excuse. Again, I am not hating on mentally challenged people

I think I can end this
Although it could be a legit explanation to just say she just doesn't have a mind lets just look at a short hand version of why Edward( one one one) can't read Bella's mind by Meyer
Explanation:
Edward can read minds bottom line. But Bella is the only exception (oh mah god!). Why he doesn't understand. Alice says she's special at one point. And when they go visit the gang of 'vampires' in Rome(or what not. Long way of avoiding to spell Voulti or whatever it is) they say interesting and such. She's strange, can basically like resist their powers.
BUT!
When she gets turned into a 'vampire' she has special powers like everyone else basically. She has the ability to block them, yet somehow before she was a vampire she had this ability also.
Why? You would think this defies the chain of events and all, and really I think it does
But this is from the woman who says vampires sparkle

 I could understand if she was the descendant of a Sparklepire... wait. I bet that's what it is. So-spethul Bella Swan is the descendant of a Sparklepire, so it was her DESTINY.
