by Scott Westerfeld, author of the Uglies series.

October 6th, 2009~!
From the blog page:
Prince Aleksander, would-be heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, is on the run. His own people have turned on him. His title is worthless. All he has is a battletorn war machine and a loyal crew of men.

Deryn Sharp is a commoner, disguised as a boy in the British Air Service. She’s a brilliant airman. But her secret is in constant danger of being discovered.

With World War I brewing, Alek and Deryn’s paths cross in the most unexpected way…taking them on a fantastical, around-the-world adventure that will change both their lives forever.

Very interesting. You can read chapter one on the page.
There's some excellent art on the page, along with wallpapers.
It'll be a series.

I'm almost done with the book. I've gotta say I really love it. It feels like the history nerd in me and the steampunk had a baby and it was this book. I highly recommend it(though I've gotta say I'd be a Darwinist, not a Clanker).

Saw the book at Barnes and Noble, I must say it sounded intriguing.

I read this book after I heard about it on BrassGoggles.co.uk and I instantly fell in love with it! The Steampunk parts of my mind were so intrigued by al the Sgteamounkery, the Enginerr part was amazed by all the advanced technology, and the rest of me, which consists of an Amature Historian/ Strategist couldn't stop comparing this with "The War to End All Wars" and how far ahead the tech was!

Staying true to my German Liniage I'd be a Clanker! Ah, nothing like the smell of Carosine in the predawn hours during Walker piloting lessons, and nothing beats the feel of flying an Aero Plane from its dok on a Zeppelin! And theres no feeling like the one you get when firing the 7.73 Cal. Machine gun and watching the Darwinist Hydrgen Breathers burn, as I fly away in my red painted Aero Plane!

It sounds so cool! I'm listening to the free chapter of the audio book on the website.
I used to play with the ol' toy soldiers when I was wee, battling all manner of monstrous beasts. Aah, those were the days.

I'm really liking what I'm hearing at the moment! I shall have to get the book when I've finished my dissertation.

Booyaka!

Hah, finished this today. I would have to say, this is now one of my favorite books. Me and my dad both read Scott Westerfield's other series, Uglies, and that also made me want to read this. Also, the illustration is beautiful.

I read it in one day, and it was lovely! I must admit I found Deryn rather annoying at times, but the concept was fascinating! I think I would want to be a Clanker. WALKERRS!!!!

I read it in one day too. I agree: Deryn was annoying, but I feel like she's one of those characters that will mature over time and become really badass. Probably become Captain of her own Darwinist vessel.

        I would definitely be a Darwinist, even though I'm half-German. :]

I finished it a while ago, yes; Deryn was definitely annoying, but like you guys said, she'll probably become more mature and badass. smile
I'd be a Clanker, although the whole fabricated creatures thing is really cool.
Edit: there WILL be a book two!!

Truly a wonderful book. Recommended if you wanted all those boring World War I history classes to go to good use, or if you loved those World War I history classes and wondered what it would be like steamed.
