General Information

High Telgar Hold has only been its name for a few turns over fifty. Before this, it was known as Crom Hold. During the Plague, three Holds - Telgar, High Reaches, and Crom - suffered dramatic losses and eventually pulled together to form High Telgar Hold.

Although there was already a mercenary and criminal founding within Crom Hold, High Reaches had suffered the fewest casualties and so its social and political systems wormed their way to the top and took over the Hold as it was known before. Please see Social Structure and You for more information on High Telgar Hold's current Social Standing.

It is important to note that before it became a merged party, High Telgar Hold had been a Hold dedicated to the fields of mining and it is likely for this reason that it is situated very close to a river. From the east, the drying, golden coloured plains of Telgar approach the Hold and give little, but still viable, location for Herdbeasts and other plant-chewing animals to graze. More importantly, the west is splattered with rugged, barren, and dangerous landscape that gives way to the steep sides of white-capped mountains. The lands here are rich with minerals. Of particular importance is the large amounts of firestone that can be pulled from these mountains.

To the North, there are sloping foothills and more mountain peaks, while the South allows for small amounts of crop fields to grow. Further south than this are forests of pine and softwood.

Its mountain-based location gives High Telgar Hold gentle, cool summers, but extremely harsh winters. Its fall season is most notable for wind-gusts, while spring is cool, sometimes cold, but gives little cause for concern.

Within the Hold

High Telgar Hold's one and only Great Crafthall is the Mining Crafthall. This is located closer to the river than the hold itself as water is an important commodity for the separating and processing of ore lifted from mines.

Because of its location, High Telgar Hold puts a great deal of emphasis on its trading. Those who visit the Hold must walk through to the very center of the Hold to swap their goods. The hope is that a few of the Individuals decide to stay. The actual trade center itself is located mostly underneath stone and other Thread-withstanding materials. This vast, open indoor space is lined trade-tables and people selling their wares. On the eastern corner, towards the Mining Crafthall to show status, a small passageway leads back to where the Lord Holder and his wife are expected to stay.

This, of course, is not a bad location. In the days when it was known as Crom hold, the multiple rooms for the Lord Holder and his family were nothing less than extravagant. Many of the furnishings (like personal baths, etc.) are still present, but most of the non-permanent additions have been done away with.

The markets of High Telgar Hold are split into two sections: The East and West. The West, located near the mountains, is the market for meats, foods, and other more practical types of cargo. The East side takes care of the transport of fire stone to Weyrs and precious metals to be distributed among those who can afford.

Interwoven within these inside markets are men and women who run a location based on a particular skill, and on rare occasions, knowledge of a craft.

The Hold deters to residential buildings from there. The East Side containing more of the wealthy residents, and the West Side housing those of less mark-influence.

Covered beast pens are located on the edges of the Hold. The cold winters require they be brought in for shelter, or the Hold will lose the highly valued beasts.

Lord Holder Teru

Youngest son of the late Holder Pendel, Teru had not at all expected the sweep of the plague that took much of his family. He had not even reached his teens at the time, but now he is an older, rough-edged man with well-set ways. He gets a great deal of bitterness from his family as he refuses to let his sons take over his position. It's rumoured he has a person not of his lineage in mind - not surprising, considering the native Crom decided to marry a woman who was originally native to High Reaches and was the first to adapt and incorporate much of the other Hold's social ideals in High Telgar Hold.

Lady Holder Arista

Wife of Teru, and younger than him by fifteen turns, Arista is seen as nothing more than a trouble maker. She will forever be upset that Teru refuses his children positions they would normally hold. Other than bickering with her husband and spoiling her children, Arista is known for her love for fashionable clothes. It isn't rare to see her with a new design once a month, and she seems to expect every other Holder to follow her taste in clothes.

Headwoman Leri

Leri isn't beautiful, or even remotely good looking, but that doesn't bother her any. She's here to do her job, and that's too make sure the Hold is in proper order. Over the years, she's adopted almost a nanny status for the Lord Holder's three sons and two daughters and she enjoys teaching them in hopes that they'll someday grow to earn a location among running the Hold. Her outgoing and very persuasive nature makes her easy to approach and get along with. She was originally from Telgar Hold and keeps very strict Hold views.

Steward Maciner

The second son of Lord Holder Teru, and the only one to have earned a Steward position, Maciner is an extremely serious man. It is very rare to catch him smiling, and if it doesn't involve business, he generally can't be bothered with it.

Steward Jervid

Jervid is a large, overly pleasant man who has his bloodlines in what was once High Reaches Hold. He was, however, born in High Telgar Hold, and although he was not the brightest star in the sky, he showed profiency in social interaction. He constantly relates stories to day to day life, and makes a habit of personally greeting and accommodating traders that travel through the Hold. It is partially because of his strong, friendly influence that trade in High Telgar Hold is stronger than ever.

Harper Rogero

Rogero's greatest skill is in math, but that isn't to say he can't do it all! He's young for a Harper, and although he has great skill with writing and numbers, his public speaking and social skills have a little ways to go. Because of his young age, he's often fighting for respect. Often times, he has an older, stronger man reside over lessons to keep order. If you are able enough to take lessons from Rogero, prepare to learn, and prepare to learn a lot.

Lord Holder's Second Daughter Maril

Maril might be the only member of Teru's family that doesn't feel cheated by her situation. She follows around on the Headwoman's heels without a single complaint. In fact, you'll never catch Maril complaining, or very rarely. She's very positive, although a bit shy, and fascinated with people - she's likely to be caught staring at someone most of the time.

Lord Holder's First Daughter Diennali

The words spoiled rotten brat are the perfect words for Diennali. Her chin is always up in the air, and she seems to enjoy putting other people down. Those who know what's best for them generally avoid her. She's simply not worth the headache.

The Disowned Lord Holder's First Son Quorin

There seems to be a gene for spoiled rotten in Teru's family. Quorin got a nice piece of it, and it has turned him into an arrogant, brash, and rather hateful man. He is often barking orders, taking dares, and getting into trouble. He wants a Hold like a baby dragon wants meat on hatching, but he has yet to display the responsibility required between the women and the drinking and the fights. Because of his inability to correct his behavior, Quorin was disowned, but his mother made, and continues to make, Quorin excuses that have kept him from getting kicked out entirely. It is uncertain how long she will be able to protect him, and being kicked out of the Hold seems to be close in his future.

Lord Holder's Third Son Gillot

Not only is he the third son, but he was also the last born in the family. He feels himself an insignificant party, and has developed quite a bit of resentment for everyone in the family. No one can do anything right, including himself. If there was a prize for pessimism within the Hold, Gillot would take the top.

Master Wherhandler Vanan and gold Vanask

Yes, the Master Wherhandler is a man. It comes as a surprise to many handlers to find that the gold chose a man, but people generally agree that they are a well suited pair. Despite his large and imposing stature, Vanan is reputed as a good man with a firm hand and a hearty laugh. Under him and Vanask the Hold has been able to create a strong wher workforce, which has greatly increased the Hold's mining output. Vanask has also been a good figurehead for the wher community, being of relatively even temperament (except around food). The Master Wherhandler is usually seen around mid afternoon at the earliest, and is usually up all night until the crack of dawn, working with whers and prospective handlers alike. He also co-ordinates the mining schedules for the Hold's troupe of whers.
