General Information Telgar Weyr was the last of the Weyrs to be built by the Ancients, and was settled in the Interval after the First Pass. It was built into an eroded mountain face in the central part of the northern mountains. Originally built when the nearby mining Hold expanded and required protection from Thread, all the caverns and original weyrs were subsequently cut by miners. As a result, some of the passageways in the Lower Caverns are rather narrow, a few of the smaller ones bearing the remains of old tram tracks. Three of the tram lines still work and are used to ship large amounts of cargo from one side of the mountain to the other (most of the time, anyways).
Though the Weyr was also built in the mountains, it is at a lower elevation than the neighbouring High Reaches, which lies to the west. It is capable of holding 400 dragons.
Holds beholden to Telgar Weyr: High Telgar Hold, Dunto Hold*, Balan Hold**
*Dunto Hold is a growing Minor Hold at the convergence point of the three rivers into the Great Dunto River (map). It is renowned for raising "hardy" farm animals, especially runnerbeasts for the neighbouring mountain Holds.
**Balan Hold is a growing Minor Hold, especially after the abandonment of Telgar Hold. It is almost entirely dedicated to mining, and is known for being rather leery of outsiders. It was founded by wherhandlers and miners.

Within the Weyr Thought it is not built in an abandoned volcano, Telgar Weyr's mountain side does form a rather bowl-shape that has been smoothed out into the valley below it. All the entrances to the Lower Caverns and ground level quarters are accessible from this smoothed area, which serves as the Weyrbowl. Where the stone flattens out is the feeding pen, which houses the fattened herdbeasts for the dragons. After devastating loses due to the Telgar Plague, Telgar Weyr too generally fills its feeding pen with Wherries. Very rarely will it have something like a cow or other livestock, and these other animals are generally reserved for the queens, especially if she is near to rising.
Further into the valley – but within walking distance from the feeding pens – is a natural hot spring which serves as a lake. Affectionately called Dragon's Foot Springs because it apparently looks like a large dragon's foot when viewed from above, it has both a "shallow" end and a deeper middle for dragons of all sizes. In the dead of winter, dragons are frequently found lounging in the waters in order to heat up their ichor. Riders and Weyrfolk alike are also welcome in the springs, provided they keep some measure of clothing on. There is a small, wooden cabana, heated using water from the springs, where riders can store their possessions if they wish.
There are Star Stones to predict a coming Pass scattered around the Weyr.
The mountain side is covered by wide ledges where dragons can sun themselves in the warmer weather. There are also several larger spots available only by flight where dragons may sun in groups. Each weyr has its own sunning ledge, which also serves as a place to land. Each weyr consists of a collection of sleeping furs (which serve as both blankets and bedding for the rider) and a raised stone bed for the dragon. If the weyr is large enough, there may also be room for a small trunk or storage closet for the rider. In most cases, the rider's personal belongings are kept on a shelf above the rider's bed. The majority of the weyrs at Telgar would be considered small weyrs, which are just large enough to house two riders and their dragons.
All the weyrs at Telgar are only accessible on dragon back.
Goldrider weyrs are located near the Hatching Grounds, and are the only weyrs accessible by foot. They have extensive tunnels and stairs that lead down the Lower Caverns and out in the Bowl. The Weyrwoman's chambers are directly above the Hatching Grounds, with connecting tunnels to the other goldrider's rooms as well as to a back door into the Hatching Grounds. This tunnel, however, is only accessible through her chambers, and it would not be wise to attempt to sneak through. It is rumoured that the Weyr's goldriders share a private hot spring in the level between their weyrs.
One should note that Weyrlings (dragons to young to be assigned a wing), with the exception of queens (who stay in private quarters at any age), thrive in the weyrling barracks (or "werylings' barracks"). The barracks can house up to some one hundred odd hatchlings at a time. It is, essentially, one giant room with many "beds" for the dragons covered with straw and stone slab "beds" for the riders placed above them. How close one rider is to another will often hint at their social tendencies or their opinion of a other rider in particular, given there is more than enough space to spread apart.
The Lower Caverns are an extensive series of caverns with easy entrance by foot. They contain common use areas such as lounging and recreation areas for riders, kitchens and dining areas, bathing pools, storage areas for supplies, living quarters for support staff, children (Weyrbrats), crafters shops and more. They also contain special quarters for riders who are involved in mating flights, as their private weyrs are often inaccessible from the ground.
Telgar Weyr also posses a special series of tram tracks which are used to send supplies from one part of the Lower Caverns to the other. They are also used to move firestone in times of need. Candidates and Weyrbrats alike frequently use the trams for their own personal use (whenever they think they won't get caught) in fun and games as well as pranks/dares.

Known NPCs Click here for more information on the social structure of Telgar Weyr
[image] Weyrwoman Malkai of Gold Kaveth
When Malkai walks into the room the temperature drops to sub zero. The famed Telgar Snow Queen, she is known for her straightforward and cold demeanour, seemingly resistant to all bronzerider attention. It is rumoured that nothing can sway her from the truth, and as such she has become some kind of Weyr justice. People have come to expect her blunt honesty, and seem to regard her opinion highly. Over Kaveth she holds an iron control, and Kaveth answers with an unwavering loyalty. The gold dragon herself is a quiet character, and seems to hold a soft spot for young dragons, especially greens. It is unknown if Malkai wants the Weyrwoman position as much as Iva and Ranabeth, but it is certain that if she did, Kaveth would do everything in her power to get it.
[image] Jr. Weyrwoman Iva of Gold Ranabeth
As Holdbound as they get, Iva’s black and white view of the world may have been what attracted Ranabeth in the first place. The pair is notoriously judgemental, and refuses to budge whenever they think they’re right. As the younger of the two junior queens she was rather spoiled, and as such is prone to bouts of sullenness and foul temper. Ranabeth, however, as stepped up to the plate, and it is becoming clearer who calls the shots in their relationship. Uncontrolled and extremely determined, this gold wants the Weyrwoman position with such fervour that it occupies nearly all of her thoughts. Kaveth will take second place to her, even if she has to fight her tooth and claw for it.
[image] Weyrleader I'dan of Bronze Rakyth
The Weyr's jokester, I'dan is the kind of guy that gets greeted with shoulder slaps and manly hugs. As far as bronzeriders go he's an easy-going, laid back young man, with the confidence and the dreams to take him places. Rakyth himself is a very upbeat dragon, with a little bit of spunk which is only encouraged by I'dan. The two love having an audience, and will often perform difficult and dangerous aerial moves just for the attention. Unbeknownst to his fellow riders, he is the half sister of Iva. They share the same father, though he is a child born out of wedlock. In order to protect Iva he has kept his relation to her a secret, hoping that Kaveth will be the first to Rise. And Rise she did! Rakyth managed to pull out a spectacular win, promoting I'dan to Weyrleader!
[image] Headwoman Norra
Though she may be getting on in her years, Norra has proven time and time again that she still has what it takes run the Lower Caverns. The mother hen type, she can frequently be found tidying up after other people or applying numbweed to a scrape on a child’s knee. Her children have long since grown up, but that doesn’t stop her from mothering anything that comes within her territory. Compared to the two younger queenriders she is a refreshing change, and while she has never openly gone against them, she has expressed some sadness that neither of them were very maternal.
[image] Bronzerider D'rak of Bronze Hondonith
D'rak the Drunk as he referred to behind his back (though sometimes to his face) once held the title of Weyrleader, much to everyone's chagrin. Though not an unkind man by any stretch of the imagination, he lacks self-control, and as a result is rarely sober (at least, not since he became a dragonrider). He's the type of leader that prefers to stick to the status quo, and has made no effort to change any of the Weyr's practices. His dragon Hondonith is a rather lazy bronze, and frequently has to be goaded into things when his presence is required. D'rak's rise to power is rather embarrassing for the Weyr, and most people are very glad he has been replaced.
[image] Wingsecond U'rad of Brown Mornanth
If U'rad could be described in one word it would be diligent. The man thinks about nothing other than work, and would work himself to death if not for the intervention of I'dan. He becomes frequently impatient whenever things move slowly around him, and is an absolute snarling mess whenever his perfectly laid out plans go awry. Mornanth is almost as a**l as his rider, and as such is a terrible roommate. They have chased off several greens and a blue with their stomping of feet, and only I'dan seems to be willing to put up with his fussy Wingsecond.
[image] Wingleader T'pan of Bronze Angath
Ladies, have no fear! T'pan is here! The chivalrous and dashingly handsome T'pan is the second candidate for Weyrleader. Not only does he have a fabulous body – courtesy of long hours of hard work ;D – but he also has the charisma required to hold a crowd. While I'dan has his place in the man club, T'pan works his charm on the ladies. To this day he has never refused a call for help, and is always the first on the scene of a crisis. While he may be a little lacking in the brains department, he has a big bronze, and you know what they say about men with big bronzes. Angath, for his part, isn't the sharpest tool in the shed, but he does have a record of being rather gentlemanly. He is a good dragon to room with, and is generally amiable no matter what the situation.
[image] Wingsecond S'bir of Brown Worveroth
Who likes manly man? We do! We do! Rumour has it that S'bir was only chosen as T'pan's Wingsecond because he too was dashingly handsome, and that may not be entirely false. S'bir spends his free time body building, and is quite happy to show off his muscles to anyone who asks (or even to those who don't ask). He can be a bit of a bully towards blue and greenriders, especially those outside of his wing, and is well known for "working off" any extra Flight lust if Worveroth doesn't manage to catch the female dragon. Worveroth himself is a cocky brown, chasing everything that even looks like it's ready for a Flight with a single-minded determination. He has a good catch rate, and intends to try his hand at a Jr. Queen when one of them Rises.
[image] Wingleader B'tarn of Bronze Maltoth
On old timer, B'tarn looks like he was carved out of the cliff face of the Weyr. Tall and imposing, he has a face like stone, weathered from Turns and Turns of flying in the northern sky. The bronzerider very rarely speaks, and when he does, he doesn't raise his voice. It's an effective technique that Malkai seems to have picked up on as well; the lower your voice is the more inclined people are to be quiet and listen. His bronze, Maltoth, seems surprisingly amiable next to his quiet rider. While he adores his non-metallic bros, female dragons make Maltoth nervous and he is prone to either ignoring them entirely or trying to treat them like he treats other male dragons.
[image] Weyrlingmaster J'ev of Blue Throth
His hair may be grey and his body old but on the inside he's got more energy than a kid Standing for the first time. All new Weyrlings are greeted with his token enthusiasm, each lesson filled with surprises and whatever tricks he has up his ancient sleeves. His door is always open if anyone has a problem, and he makes sure to impress upon all his young pupils the importance of caring for ones dragon. If it's one thing he cannot tolerate it's causing a dragon harm as a result of ignorance. Female riders may find that he expects very little from them (or perhaps of them), which can be a good thing or a bad thing depending upon their personality. He certainly doesn't go out of his way to be unkind to them, but he tends to treat them as though they are small children who can't be expected to do very much all at once.
[image] Weyrsinger M'dor of Green Ichoth
A slightly enigmatic figure, M'dor was a fledgling journeyman when he was Searched from the Harper Hall. After Impressing Green Ichoth he became the Weyrsinger, and spends much of his time teaching Weyrbrats and getting Weyrlings up to speed. When he's off duty he can frequently be found in a shadowed corner, strumming on his hand-made gitar. He has a wise word for everyone, and is rumoured to know everything that goes on in the Weyr, or at the very least all the gossip. Ichoth is a quick-witted green, though she is often regarded as nothing special due to her predominantly shy nature. He has a brown firelizard named Sharp.
[image] Ex-Weyrwoman Aesri of gold Shaith
Before the power hungry and super old Aesri was forced to step down, her gold Rose one last time and the chase began. Surprise of surprises, Shaith didn't exactly make it very far, and was caught by an equally surprised Hondonith. The clutch that resulted was barely worth mentioning, and after that the bronzeriders made it very clear that it was time for Aesri to go. Since then the goldrider has taken to stalking about the corridors, frightening candidates and Lower Caverns workers alike. She has an unkind word for everyone, just so nobody feels left out. After the failure of her final flight, Shaith has pretty much gone into hiding, presumably sulking.
[image] Master Dragonhealer Faltar
Though Faltar was certainly not born at Telgar, he's lived at the Weyr since he was 19 Turns old, and as such, considers himself as knowledgeable about the place as some of the old timers. Well-educated and well-spoken, he deals with patients at all hours of the day (and night!) without ever seeming to lose his patience. He's the dependable sort, who makes it his business to know only enough to ensure his patients are well taken care of. You'll have a hard time finding this one spreading idle gossip. Though he's well above the typical handfasting age, Faltar has never appeared to be interested in any woman. Despite having never been seen with a man either, the rumours about his lack of a partner range from homosexuality to impotency and everything in between. He did stand for Impression several times, though he was never chosen by a dragon, and thus remains unbonded.

Wing Assignments This message is an announcement to alert people of the wings their new Telgar custom dragons are in as of now. Remember, there are NPC riders all over the place, so it should be understood by characters IC they are not the only wing/wingriders. However, for the sake of allowing people to RP with each other instead of a bunch of invisible people, we are stuffing all the "existing" riders together.
Veteran Telgar riders will be assumed to have been in a different wing and are now being moved. New transfer riders have had no other Telgar wing prior to this.
IC, this is decide by D'rak, the Weyrleader, by random lots he picked out of a hat. He will tell them, however, that he picked them based off of their IC skill set. There would have been an IC announcement, but it was given off-screen. Riders who don't like their wing assignment are free to set up an appointment to try and get transferred. OOC, however, will hold no influence on transfers.
Wingriders may be transferred again or promoted (or perhaps demoted) at any time based on their IC actions. (NPCs, too!)
If you have any further questions, just ask.
Riders not placed in a wing Foalen's custom L'pin of Blue Shamth
Rakyth's Wing Wingleader: I'dan of Bronze Rakyth (NPC) Wingsecond: U'rad of Brown Mornanth (NPC) Wingriders: C'zha of Bronze Enbrieth G'ind of Blue Vorath Tethis of Blue Feylith D'iant of Green Tinnuth Y'kar and Green Kannaroth
Angath's Wing Wingleader: T'pan of Bronze Angath (NPC) Wingsecond: S'bir of Brown Worveroth (NPC) Wingriders: M'ak of Brown Kassieth A'gen of Brown Soeteth Kaya and Blue Rumath T'ren of Green Chaveth Jasrai and Green Roseth
Maltoth's Wing Wingleader: B'tarn of Bronze Maltoth (NPC) Wingsecond: VACANT (info forthcoming) Wingriders: A'li and Green Nellath
Things to Assume OOC:
Because it's not practical to expect everyone can find time to RP every single IC wing practice, things need to be assumed OOC to have happened. These things are as follows:
For both wings:
- Practice is at least once a day (relatively short) and it will be taken very seriously. It includes drills, verbal lessons and mental preparation.
- All dragons are expected to behave, pay attention and do their best.
- Ill-behaved dragons and their riders will be assigned extra chores by their Wingleader. Telgar still suffers from a shortage of dragons and thus they require everyone to be on the same page. Troublemakers will be given so much work that they would not have the time nor the energy to cause any more trouble.
- Extra training of female riders to ensure their success is considered normal behaviour.
For Rakyth's wing:
- I'dan expects diligence from his riders, but does not require their complete obedience. He is happy to listen to their concerns and their ideas for wing drills, and will stick up for his Wingriders (provided that they work hard for him). Female bluerider Tethis will find him to be quite open-minded compared to most Telgar folk, though this may be because he treats her like she's one of his guys. Expect some manly arm slaps after wing drills.
- U'rad is very easy to piss off, and the first to run at the mouth if someone makes a mistake. Though he has a good eye for things that need improvement, it's a very critical one, and his verbal blows often have to be softened by I'dan. Both he and his brown Mornanth come to drills expecting to work, and do not like drill time being interrupted. If I'dan invites his riders to a drink in the dining hall, U'rad rarely if ever accepts his invitations. Essentially, expect to only see U'rad at work.
- I'dan is one of the favoured candidates to be the next Weyrleader. Whether your character supports him is entirely up to you.
For Angath's wing:
- While some male riders may choose to ignore female riders, T'pan seems to devote all his attention to them. He can frequently be seen flirting with the female greenriders in his wing (currently NPCs) and helps get the newly made female riders "up to speed" with the rest of the Weyr. Female bluerider Kaya should expect a fair share of attention from him, though often T'pan will remark to other people that it's a shame she Impressed a blue and not a green. As for the male riders, T'pan will favour those who put as much time into their appearance as he does, regardless of their dragon's colour.
- T'pan believes in letting riders sort out their own problems, and will only intercede if he believes it will reflect badly on him. His advice tends to be limited to relationships and lover's quarrels, so don't expect to get much use out of him.
- Greenriders and blueriders best watch out for S'bir. Both he and his brown Worveroth have a reputation for bullying, and they expect non-metallic riders to work extremely hard. Leaving the female riders to T'pan, S'bir focuses all of his attention to those male riders who he considers "weak" and drills them harder than ever. If he can be the epitome of strength with his body-builder's physique than why shouldn't the rest of his wing?
- If any rider's green has Risen, they can expect to have seen Worveroth in the chasing pack. (If you would like to set up a past experience with S'bir/Worveroth in which they caught your rider's green, just shoot Chibi a PM)
- T'pan is one of the favoured candidates to be the next Weyrleader. Whether your character supports him is entirely up to you.
For Maltoth's wing:
- As one of the eldest riders (and perhaps the eldest bronzerider) B'tarn has thus far avoided any female riders in his wing. It was rumoured that he dislikes them (more so than most) and as a result D'rak kept them out of his wing in an effort to keep the peace. B'tarn himself has not confirmed or denied their rumours and Maltoth refuses to comment on how he feels about female humans.
- The wing's original Wingsecond filed for a transfer to another Weyr several turns ago and has yet to be replaced. The reasons for his sudden disappearance have been kept quite hush-hush, though that hasn't stopped rumours from spreading.
- Maltoth's wing is by far one of the most regimented wings in the Weyr. B'tarn drills them longer and harder than he is required to by the Weyrwoman, and as such they have moulded into a very cohesive unit. Silliness is not tolerated during wing practice. Once practice is over, however, the wing is allowed to do as they please. B'tarn does not meddle in the outside affairs of his wing. So long as they show up on time and ready to work they can do as they please.
- B'tarn was the Weyrleader during one point of Shaith's long and terrible reign. Maltoth sired the clutch that produced Kaveth but not the clutch that produced Ranabeth.
