hey guys!
anyways....recently i started college in another state. (was in california...now in oregon smile ) and i really wanted to continue riding when i got up here......sooooo i finally looked into the equestrian team here at my school, and after receiving alot of information, and finding out that it wasn't as expensive as i thought it was going to be, i decided that i am going to join the equestrian team! i'm super excited. i won't really know for sure if i totally want to, but there is a pizza nite/ info meeting next wednesday where i'll find out more.

sooo...what do you all think? any advice? stories from your own experiences? random blurbs you just thought of while reading this topic?

i'd love to hear them!

Are they varsity or intercollegiate? If they are varsity (it may only be a mid-US things) they can *very* competitive since it has direct correlation to how the school is ranked in term of sports in their Division (ie Baylor is Big 12 and PSU is Big 10.) I was going to try out for my equestrian team here but it clashed with band and I wanted something that was bit less crazy. I found later that the coach is crazy, and I had to wear breeches all the time and most of the girls were Medal riders in high school.
However I have friends who ride intercollegiate and love it because it is far more accepting of all levels.

its intercollegiate. I know what you are talking about, i have a friend who joined a varsity team, and its really competitive. you have to be realllly good to be on that team. so thats why i really liked this team.

haha, the old college standby "Provide pizza and they will come". xd

I think I've told you about my intercollegiate riding experiences before... haven't I? I could have sworn I had...

Anyway, I did IDA (Intercollegiate Dressage Association) which OSU doesn't have, unfortunately. But either way, it was AWESOME. Don't know anything about OSU's IHSA team though. None of my friends who go there ride, soo... yeah. Sorry I'm not more helpful in that.

Hardest thing is balancing academics and equestrian. Just remember that school comes first, and to make sure you have your homework done before you leave for the show! You can try to bring it with you... a lot of us usually did. Colleen was the only person who actually studied at shows though. Or, she at least opened her Chemistry book. The rest of us just hoped that by having them in our bags, we would absorb the knowledge. It didn't usually work too well...

hahaha i know! i was like...oo information...OOO PIZZA!!! (also...ooo free food!!! ) lol

i think you have..i made another topic about it somewhere else when i was playing with the idea of joining wink

thanks for the advice! that'll help! i'm really hoping i can balance both, and i think i can. i balanced two jobs school and riding last year...so hopefully that was like a tester course haha.

haha, the balancing act isn't too hard, really. You just have to stay on top of it. If you're procrastinating papers and projects for the weekend, make sure it's not a weekend you have a competition or something. I'm sure you'll be able to handle it just fine. smile

Good luck to you! I bet you'll have fun. I never wanted to join the equestrian team here. They don't do endurance rolleyes
The key to staying on top of everything is get into a rhythm and don't slow down. The moment you lose your momentum everything falls apart.

-brings back dead topic-

IHSA is soooo expensive but sooo much fun. I really loved the one show I got to go to, even if they still owe me money from a class I got dropped from.

i agree, the showing is a bit expensive, but since i didn't want to pay 300 to get a credit for practicing with the team (lessoning) all i have to do is volunteer 4 hours a week at the barn, and i get to ride twice a week! its so awesome! we only have two english shows in regular season, one which already went on, in british columbia, i think we got champions of some sort. but i am having sooo soo soo much fun!

I wish I could do that! I don't actually like the girls on my team much so I got a job this semester so I can afford lessons a couple times a month, if I can get out there. smile
