Alia did not do much with her days. She spent her time wandering and grazing. She would never admit to wanting or needing company but she found herself wandering often near to places where herds grazed, hoping to get an eye on a sharp stallion or maybe even find a herd that would accept her (though she may decline the invitation for appearance sake).
Her own pride was often her downfall but Alia didn't let it get to her. Today's journeys brought her closer to the breeding and hatching grounds. Every once in a while she would see a mother and child through the trees or see foals chasing and playing with one another. She had no child of her own and often secretly enjoyed just watching them.
Alia entered a forest clearing, not far from where the young gathered, and plucked some fruit from a low hanging branch. Her brown body blended in well with the spotty shadows under the tree. She didn't look like she especially wanted company but if a curious kirin were to wander by, she would certainly assert her presence.

Porfirio was one of those colts who had hatched and lived the first days of his young life all alone, and the only reason he could think of to regret it was that there was no one around whom he could play with. And win against. The idea of winning all the games appealed to the colt's mind, and the idea of losing disgusted him. Why, when he found a friend, he intended to make the rules so he'd always win--
He wasn't watching where he was going, so he trotted straight into the back leg of the dappled mare, tumbling onto his rump. In an attempt to regain dignity and pride as the one who was always right, he said, "Ouch! Watch where your going!" It never occurred to the colt that he could possibly be in the wrong, even though, under the circumstances, he'd just said something that put him in the wrong.

Alia felt the bump of a blunt horn against her hindquarters and before she could turn her head heard the unmistakable clatter of a clumsy young kirin. They were almost always falling over or tripping, but that was in the nature of the young. By the time the mare had turned the brightly colored colt was getting back to his feet and apparently blaming her for the incident.
"Where I am going?" She snorted, tossing her mane proudly. "Your eyes must still be clouded, did you just hatch? I wasn't even moving."
She swung herself around so that they were now facing one another. Alia tried to look as regal and lovely as she could even though he was just a child. She felt that she should never look unprepared for anything.
"Now.. you are a little far from the fields. You should turn right around before your mother comes looking and thinks I tried to take you."
She had heard of mares, unable to have children, trying to take the young of others. She was certainly not THAT desperate and one colt's foolishness would not land her in an unwanted confrontation.

Porfirio looked away proudly, trying to disguise his wounded pride. "I didn't just hatch," he said stiffly. "And I don't have a mother, and I don't need one, either." That was right, he'd be a stallion one day, and no stallion should ever appear WEAK in front of anyone, be it mare, stallion, or foal. He should start behaving like a stallion now...however one did that. Porfirio still hadn't figured that one out.

Hearing this Alia's pose immediately softened. She sort of tutted him from between her teeth. He clearly, despite his age, was proud and determined to show everyone that he could do it on his own. She could identify with that herself. She'd known her mother, if only for a short period of time, and the loss of that figure in her life had been a hard one. She'd spent a good deal of time in her childhood trying to prove the same thing that this little colt was doing now.
"Ah.. You are just like a grown stallion then huh?" Alia turned her head, giving the child a playful look out of the corner of her eye. "You ARE growing.. I can tell that much. But you are certainly not ready to battle for your livelihood. Fight for mares? Defend a herd?"
She chuckled and looked up at the tree she stood under. She'd stripped most of the low branches of anything good to eat and so she reared up on her hind legs and stretched out her neck to snatch a bunch of fruit that had been just out of reach. She dropped the fruit in front of the colt.
"You may not need a mother but it looks like you may need a good meal. Consider it a gift." She knew this proud little "man" wouldn't be happy if he thought it was pity or charity.

"Errr...." Suddenly, the rug had been pulled out from under Porfirio, and he flailed with the problem of mares and herds. Some part of his brain muttered that he wasn't old enough to worry about mares or herds, and that presented a small problem to any stallion. He eventually settled on an attempt at dignified silence.
He was on firmer ground with the fruit, and proudly accepted the gift. "Thanks," he said with stiff dignity. The fruit was just ripe, too, just what he liked. Nope, not charity or pity if she said it was a gift, so no need to feel embarrassed. After all, she must have done it to honor such a great kirin as Porfirio!

For some reason Alia was thoroughly amused by this proud little colt. She wasn't sure if this first encounter would be a single experience or if she would come to see him grow in the future, but she imagined his life would be interesting if only by her initial assessment of his personality.
As she rose up to pick herself another piece of fruit there came an annoyed chittering from the tree in which she was eating. A bright pink flash of fur shot across her nose and mane, leapt onto Porfiro's back, skittered across his mane and settled in front of him.
"Duncan.. calm down!" Alia admonished her familiar who was now seated in front of Porfirio and failing at trying to steal back the fruit that the colt was eating.

Porfirio glared at the pink creature who'd dared to try to steal his fruit. "Leave my fruit alone," he said coldly, stamping his soft baby hooves in front of the fruit protectively. He glanced at the mare. "Is this one your friend?" If this pink creature was, he felt a little jealous. The mare was his friend, not the friend of this strange little pink creature, after all, and he wouldn't let anyone steal his friend.
((I can see him as a stally, still being possessive of Alia. xd ))

(( XD He's cute! ))
Alia was clearly amused. Duncan hopped around the fruit, avoiding the stamping of Porfirio's hooves and chittering loudly.
"Duncan.. stop that." Her amusement seemed to have ended swiftly and her short fuse of a temper kicked in. She snorted in annoyance through her nostrils and her familiar seemed to get the hint. He scrambled up the trunk of the tree and perched in the branches, peering down at the pair of kirin.
"Yes.. he's sort of with me. As much as a small wild beast can be. His name is Duncan. I am Alia.." It had only dawned on her now that she had not introduced herself to this young one. When she said her own name there was a distinguished pride about it. She wasn't a leader or an elder but she carried herself as if she were very important.
"What do they call you, Sir?" She emphasized the 'sir'. She would treat this colt as much as she could to the level of which he believed in himself. At least until he made a mistake!

((Yeah...though given his opinions...I suspect he'll disturb her a bit once he's a stallion with all that arrogance and all those hormones driving him with no self-control.... >< ))
Porfirio nodded stiffly at Duncan and more regally to the mare who called herself Alia. "I am Porfirio." The more he watched Duncan, the more he disapproved, but he was too proud to shoot off his mouth about a little pest like that. After a moment, he felt secure enough to munch on his fruit, still striving to carry himself regally...until he realized the elegant mare wasn't eating. "You can eat, too," he said a bit stiffly, not sure how he wanted to say it even after he spoke.

"Oh can I?" Alia snorted in amusement. "Thank you for your permission, your highness Porfirio." Her tone was teasing though she didn't care one way or the other if the young kirin would take offense. She wondered who named him, or if he named himself.
"I'm rather full. I was eating before you sauntered in here and hit me on the rump." She swished her tail across said rump for emphasis and as she did so, Duncan scampered down the tree with his own piece of scavenged fruit. The familiar settled on top of her backside and began to eat. Alia didn't mind in the least.
"Where is your family, if you don't mind me asking?" Most of the young nowadays had parents, very few eggs being abandoned while the kirin populations were doing so well.

Porfirio shrugged, ignoring her comments on the clumsiness he was sure he didn't possess. "Suit yourself." The comment about parents irritated him a little. "I don't have parents. Who needs them? They just push you around and ruin your fun and stuff." Porfirio had a long list of dislikes, and those who bossed him around, including parents, were pretty close to the top of his list of dislikes.

"Do you have much fun?" Alia snorted slightly. He didn't seem like the sort of colt who went out to play very often. "And if you don't have parents, how do you know they are so awful?"
Alia didn't like the idea of being bossed around either, but now in the prime of her life she secretly yearned to be a parent. Duncan had finished his fruit and now chittered softly to himself and played with the hair of her tail while she swished it back and forth. He was rather cute as he went after the swishing strands playfully.
"Where do you live, Porfirio?" Alia could hear the whinnies of a group of children playing some sort of game in a clearing not far away. She wondered if he didn't play with them by choice, or if his attitude had him ostracized by the other young.

Porfirio looked proud. "I sometimes play with the others, and their parents always interrupt to tell them to do stuff like nap." There was an affronted tone to his words that clearly stated his dislike of parents. He watched the foals playing distantly. He wasn't really fond of their games, and they weren't fond of his games, which was why they didn't often play together, but no one was going to make him say anything about that. "I live here," he said with what he assumed was dignity. "Where else would I live than right in this grove of trees here?" Wasn't it logical for a stallion to stay at home and guard it from intruders? He didn't consider Alia an intruder, and he hadn't quite worked out what he thought an intruder was, but he figured he'd figure that out later.

Alia widened her eyes, her expression one that meant 'pardon me for not realizing the obvious!'.
"Well I don't live here. But I happen to be very fond of this fruit. It's one of the nicer groves." She was big on fruit. Berries were okay, but not satisfying enough. "Theres another grove nearby with some quality foliage. Would you like to see it?"
Alia tilted her head, directing towards the woods to the north. Since Porfirio seemed to stick to this area, she figured he'd never seen many new places.
"I was going to head there next and you are welcome to join me. Or perhaps you'd rather.. stay on the home front?"
