I have two, both by Roger Zelazny.
Lord of Light is a futuristic sci fi set on a planet established when Earth was destroyed. The original settlers of the planet have found a way to transport themselves into different bodies. They use this to fashion themselves as gods (from the Hindu pantheon), and keep all of the technology from the rest of the people on the planet. The main character is a dissident from the gods and fashions himself in the Buddhist religion to combat the others.
Donnerjack is a less futuristic sci fi, more based on the creation of a virtual reality. This one is too hard to explain, quite honestly, and the best way I can explain it is by what my friend said when she was halfway through the book: "I don't know what's going on, but I like it!" You feel that way through 3/4 of the book and then it all comes together. It's wonderful. heart
