Lauss waddled a bit with the weight of his new boots as he headed over to the Grady cottage, his hands holding a gift that was clearly in the shape of either an umbrella or a cane. It was wrapped beautifully, unnecessary bows and ribbons all over, and hardly any creases in the wrapping paper itself. Lauss had practiced his gift wrapping technique all week, and it had clearly paid off. Even with the dull sky above him, Lauss was in a chipper mood. He looked good. Rhian would think so, too, wouldn't she?
Making his way up to the Grady's door, Lauss knocked three times before holding the present behind his back, a bit of it peeking out behind him. He stood tall and proud, excited to see what Rhian would think of his surprises. A gift and a well-dressed boyfriend. What more could she possibly want? He looked down as he waited, admiring the extra detail put into his outfit and pulling at his belt a bit to make sure it was straight.

Rhian opened the door and peeked out, a pitiful, frustrated pout on her face. She had been trying to study that silly, stupid homework she was supposed to do but didn't understand in the least, and was extremely annoyed with herself for not knowing what she was supposed to do. The pout evaporated into a smile, however, as she saw it was Lauss at the door. "Lauss-teacher! Lauss-teacher! Hello, how are you - oooooh, are those new clothes? What's that behind your back?" And now the flutterby was out the door, clinging to Lauss in an extremely affectionate hug, a bright and cheerful expression spread across her face, lighting it up to an extreme of beauty she didn't know she possessed.

Giving Rhian a cheerful grin at the sight of the girl in the doorway, Lauss looked down, admiring his new clothes with her before looking behind him. "Yes, these are from Orpheus. I look much more handsome, don't I?" At least he thought so. Pulling out the present from behind his back, he held it out to her, the wrapping paper and ribbons shimmering a bit in the daylight. "It's an umbrella." He had no idea he wasn't supposed to tell her what was inside before she opened it, but luckily for her he didn't know what he was talking about. "You said you didn't like water before, and so I've been wanting to buy you one. It's very nice."
It was a good thing Lauss was too foolish to ruin the surprise of Rhian's gift. While what was wrapped may have looked like an umbrella to the essentic, what he had bought was a rather expensive red lace parasol. Lauss thought she'd find it prettier than any of the other actual umbrellas being sold in the market. It was true that it clearly didn't provide the same function, but it looked like it fit the girl better, anyway.

"Oh yes, Lauss-teacher! You look very much more handsome," Rhian said, her eyes sparkling with an excited light as she took the present, only half-listening and nodding at what Lauss had to say about it, tearing open the paper to get at the gift - and stopping to take in its beauty once she truly saw it. Opening it, she peered up through the pretty red lace, her mouth forming a perfect ' o ' shape for just a moment before her gaze returned to Lauss, and her face lit up with an even brighter smile than she'd expressed before. "Oh, Lauss-teacher, it's so PRETTY! I love it! Thank you!" Then the flutterby reverently closed the parasol and tugged Lauss inside, where she proceeded to thank him 'properly' with a very long, happy kiss.

Grinning at Rhian's excitement, Lauss nodded, glad his gift was appreciated. "You are very welcome, Rhi. The man who sold it to me said it was genuine--" Lauss was happily interrupted by being tugged inside and kissed, smiling and unconsciously hugging her a bit. He really should look into buying more things for her. She looked so happy with a gift in her hands. Her lips still pressed against his, he tried to speak to her, his voice very muffled as he did so. "Whursh Mish Ewandwa?" Translation: "Where's Miss Ellandra?" It was odd going into a home and not immediately being able to see everyone inside. Cottages were so much bigger than vardos...

Rhian giggled and broke off the kiss, looking at Lauss-teacher's pretty pretty eyes. "Mama took the babies out for a walk earlier, she wanted to go outside for a bit and doesn't like leaving the babies. Do you want to come and play a game, or - or............" she paused, a slightly distasteful pout crossing her features. "Or you could .................. help me study........... I guess."

Lauss eagerly grabbed Rhian's hand, nodding with delight. "You'd like to study? Or, were these games educational? Either would be wonderful." Grinning wide, his expression faded as he noticed she wasn't as excited as he was. "Rhi doesn't want to study with me? What would you prefer?" What could be more entertaining than learning?

Rhian sighed and looked mournfully at Lauss-teacher. "It's not that, Lauss-teacher, it's just words don't make sense to me - pictures are so much easier to understand!" She didn't want Lauss-teacher to be sad, that was the last thing she ever wanted!

Nodding his head weakly, he suddenly wished he were any good at making pictures. That was something he'd have to work on if he was going to be able to help Rhian with studying. "That's alright, Rhi. We can... play games for now, if you'd like." He really just wanted to spend time with her -- preferably while she was enjoying herself.

"No, we can study, Lauss-teacher. . . . . but is there a way to make it fun for me too?" Rhian asked, tilting her head. "I know studying itself makes you happy, but I think we should figure out how to make it fun for me before I can really do it. . . . . I guess." Despite appearances, Rhian did want to do well in school, and she very much wanted to enjoy what Lauss-teacher enjoyed. . . she just wasn't made the same as him.

Looking off as he thought for a moment, Lauss had to rely on the very little creativity he had in him. "I suppose we could try to draw out pictures and diagrams to help you. Is there a way to make studying into a game?" If changing how to learn meant making Rhian happy, he supposed that's what they'd have to do. Still, would he enjoy learning when it wasn't in straightforward sentences? He'd only tried the traditional way of studying, and didn't know if he'd find pictures helpful, or even usable for that matter.

"I don't know," Rhian said honestly, intrigued by the prospect of studying as a game, however. The flutterby thought and thought and thought, but couldn't quite figure out how anyone could do something like that. Still, somewhere, somehow, someone MUST have come up with something, right? So they just. . . needed to ask around, and look for someone who might know! "Um . . .. we could ask people, or we could try fo figure it out ourselves - ooooh, maybe we could combine studying with kissing practice! Maybe I'd learn better that way, and you could get in more practice kissing and hugging!" The flutterby's eyes and antennae lit up at the prospect, positively glowing (literally, in the case of her antennae) with excitement.

Lauss' face lit up, nodding eagerly to the other essentic. "Each question you answer correctly, you receive a kiss or a hug, depending on difficulty. Was that what you were thinking?" Oh, he hoped so. It was a win-win situation for him in every way, and he was astonished that something so simple could make studying even more pleasant.

"Yes, Lauss-teacher! Let's play that game!" There couldn't be a better study game on the face of Drente - studying actually sounded pleasant now! But. . . "What happens if I'm wrong, though, Lauss-teacher?" She hoped it wasn't something bad. . . .
