would a larger gourami be able to live in one? i dont mean one of the giant ones, just one of the normal sized ones, the ones that arent dwarves

Aww, I wish my puffers were breeding. I would send you babies. I'm not sure about gourami but you could do a nice small community. Some kuhli loaches, small breed of cory, or otos would be nice for bottom dwellers. Then you could do some type of middle dwellers, maybe zebra danios, guppies, or some type of tetra. Then for a centerpiece something like a betta or gourami (depending on if you can keep a bigger one in a 10g). Obviously each choice would depend upon one another. I wouldn't mix guppies with a betta, for instance. Or, if your fish store has these, you could get a pair of apistos, and a small group of bottom dwellers.
Sorry, I think of stocking fish tanks in layers. Obviously if you did a full 3 tiers, you could only have small groups of all, so maybe it would be better to choose just one or two bigger groups of something.

Ottos are indeed the way to go! They are utterly adorable and quite hardy once they survive the first few weeks. Just make sure the store didn't mislable the juvinile SAE's or CAE's I'd stay away from danios, especially if you want to add decorations and or a slower moving fish, but guppies and tetras usually do perfect in a small tank.
But may I suggest the smaller cousin of the danio's the rasbora? Lately I've been seeing more of them in the store. They are hardy and tiny, and since they are so small you can keep a much larger school of them. I find especially the Boraras and microrasbora very attractive.
I looked into the larger gouramis but sadly all are too large for a 10g. Even the dwarf kissing gourami is too large. Honeys, paradise fish, bettas, chocolate and common dwarfs would do fine though. So would apistos and rams.
If you want to make it challenging you could also try a brack water tank with bumblebee gobbies and mollies.
