While selecting firestone was not necessarily something an adult rider had to do, there were plenty of candidates and Weyrlings around to make sure that Ista Weyr would have fully stocked bags of the stuff for Turns to come, Lyveana liked to inspect what Ruinnth would be consuming herself. Today was no different, what with a thread-rope drill being planned for that afternoon, so the greenrider was up and at'em early. She'd already figured that her unexpected appearance would throw a few noses out of alignment, especially when she showed up at the giant pile where the firestone was sorted into bags; but rank had it's privileges... even if it seemed silly to use it to make sure she could bag her own firestone without being molested.
I doubt anyone will care, Lyveana. The young humans certainly won't. The green put in, a tad irritated that her rider was being such a perfectionist. Firestone is firestone, and my stomach does not hurt when I chew from bags you have not checked. Ah, draconic bliss. Ruinnth no longer remembered that huge hunk she had taken back when they were Weyrlings. Neither rider nor dragon had thought anything of size back then, much to their distress when a particularly big one had gotten stuck down the young green's throat.
"Indulge me in this Rui, it will not take me long to fill a sackfull, and that is all you will need today anyway." Lyv replied, carefully keeping the memory of the incident away from the green.
Nearby, where the dark green could watch her rider with flashing eyes, Ruinnth only rumbled and adjusted her sitting position.

Liniyie was actually enjoying himself in the morning air as he started his chores, a trip to the firestone pit one of his first tasks, and as the russet-head took deep breaths of the cool air he could help but also enjoy the smell that came off the stones he would be sorting until the afternoon. Doing work outside was better then being cramped inside and doing whatever else would be required of him, things he also probably wouldn't mind doing since he would stay busy and his brain would keep out of idle, but outdoors still weighed better then indoors.
A gentle working tune was escaping his lips in the form of a hum, one that was carried well enough but couldn't be classified as anything good, and as Liniyie sorted he kept to himself until the sounds of his own voice were interrupted by not quite hushed murmurs and exclamations.
What's all this then?
Apparently a rider had snaked their way into the pit while carrying a bag, something that deserved being remarked on, and when the youth lifted his head up to see whom it was he found himself looking at a rather fine woman. Granted, this was at a distance since he'd separated himself from the group with his humming, but none the less he'd gotten a sight of who it was. A Green Rider, and not the K'lan of before. Interesting, but not worth skipping out on work and getting a lecture for later on.
I'll just get what I need to know about this adventure from one of the guys later. No need to stand around like a wherry.
So the youth went back to his work, turning away from the crowds and their whispers, once again gathering stone into one of the many sacks he was set to fill. He continued doing this, his steps taking him away from the spot he'd been set in, until he'd drifted away all together and found himself getting closer to what the chattering of the candidates had been about. His hands found themselves reaching for a large rock, one that seemed to be resting under a shadow, and Liniyie frowned a bit as he moved to get closer to it.

While Ruinnth's rider was busy making herself look silly, Ruinnth herself was merrily distracted by the toils of one particular young man. He was rather devoted to the task that currently occupied her rider, and the green would happily admit to being curious about what all the fuss was about, even if she refused to ask her rider about it! Firestone was firestone! Right?
Unknowingly casting a shadow, she found herself leaning further and further forward as the boy worked his way towards her. She was focused on the stones he was collecting, but to the casual observer, she surely looked like a giant Terran water bird readying itself to spear an unsuspecting fish.
At length, when he reached forward to grab a particularly large rock, the green rumbled deep in her chest as she watched, her blue-green eyes whirling slowly a few feet above his head.

Liniyie frowned as the shadow grew larger and a rumbling sound overtook his humming, and for a moment he stopped and merely looked down at the ground before turning his gaze upward. . . and into the eyes of a dragon. His jaw quickly slacked, the firestone he had in his hands dropped down to the earth and rolled away from his foot like a toy discarded. He stood there in awe for a moment, like a pest before a light, though reality quickly crashed back in. He was being rude, and probably watched by everyone around ( the rider of the Dragon included ), so it would be in his best interests to be polite. And then get the hell away and back to where he belonged.
" . . . .Hello there. I'm Liniyie."
He acted as if he were addressing another human in the Weyr, not a beast that humans rode on into the sky, but it didn't seem to change the manner in which he spoke. Liniyie was still smiling, despite his heart pounding hard enough in his chest to pound in his ears.
"Was I going to take one of the rocks you were looking at? If so, I can leave it for you to deal with."

While Lyveana barked at the idling teens over where she was currently bagging firestone to get back to work, Ruinnth merely blinked at the boy she had found, bringing her head closer to his. She was intrigued that he had bespoke her directly, and while Lyveana usually threw a fit when she did this...
I am watching you. Continue.
She whispered, her voice sounding wispy and distant. Tirade or not, the green found it occasionally amusing to whisper to another human. No matter how many times Lyveana forbade her, truthfully the only reason the green didn't do it more was because there were hardly that many people she cared to bespeak directly. It was also difficult with nondragonriders, for obvious reasons, but at this distance and with the boy in her direct line of sight, the task was simple. Far simpler then calling Lyveana over to tell him exactly the same thing.
She did not, however, push her luck, merely continued to watch him curiously. Lyveana looked like she was wrapping up and would be walking over soon. Further conversation would be through her rider.

He looked around, first of all, when a voice came issuing into his head from seemingly out of no where. No one had been around him, and certainly this dragon before him wouldn't speak to him. Doing such a thing usually . . . well, his brain couldn't even fathom something of that magnitude this early in the morning.
Still, when his looking returned no human faces in his line of sight, the only other option was the dragon . . . and did he dare acknowledged that he'd been spoken too? Surely that was a taboo since he'd never heard of people that were nonriders getting spoken to by dragons, at least no one of no importance (like himself), so could it be something he should brag about? No, of course not. He should chock this down into a memory he'd never forget any time soon, and just go about his business. If the Rider asked him what had happened, then of course he would speak of it. For now? Firestones.
" All. . .Alright then. Please forgive me while I move closer, the stones near you look like they would be better to use."
Liniyie moved and picked back up the large stone from before, checking it over in his hands to make sure it would be alright to use during the exercises. Anything that looked even remotely bad he would toss to the side and hope no one else to pick up, but stones were generally stones. He couldn't control what the other Candidates did when collecting.
" . . . "
He thought about talking more, but then it would make him look like he was talking to himself, so he went back to humming the little offkey tune that carried his work efforts around. He drew close to dragon at times, still keeping a respectful distance and bobbing his head both respectfully and apologetically when he needed to, but for the most part Liniyie had been telling the truth about the rocks - they were of a more decent quality where he'd been harvesting.
