Who: Hazeline, Xiu, Yuurei, Lucia When: late afternoon Where: Barton Bowl-a-Rama
The shoe clerk's eyebrows raised at the foursome that just paid for a bowling lane. The two ladies weren't anything too crazy, but what the hell were those other things? And how were they going to wear the clown shoes? He smirked whenever people donned the gross-looking shoes and walked so awkwardly when bowling. He had a feeling the two things made only of the tops of people wouldn't need any shoes.
As he handed the right size shoes to the two humans and looked incredulously at the floating things. "They're set. Right?"
Yuurei nodded at the obviously dumbstruck clown shoe guy and turned towards the lane. "The girl we paid said lane 18," she called to Hazeline. She was happy for this outing. The blonde guardian typically let the rule live and let live guide her relationship with Lucia, but the idea for this guardians versus raevans bowling outing to meet up again with the raevan from the graveyard and his owner had been a good one if she did say so herself.
Lucia, on the other hand, looked doubtfully down at the orange, blue, green and white shoes in her guardian's hand. They were soooo ugly. What was Yuu thinking, actually wanting to put her feet in those? Not only were they hideous, but EVERYBODY wore them! You had no clue whose feet had been in them before yours and how well they were cleaned between uses. She looked doubtfully at the people bowling in the lanes they passed. So the people were throwing a ball down a hallway thing to a bunch of white things they tried to knock over. What was the point of this?! Why didn't they just walk down and knock over the knobby things? Wouldn't using hands or feet be more effective?
Lucia sighed and looked at her guardian and Hazeline. "How do you play this game again. And what's the point! What's so great about throwing a ball to knock down some pins?" Lucia glanced at Xiu to see if he understood it anymore than she did.

Hazeline nodded a little awkwardly. “Alright,” said the young woman as she too took the pair of shoes offered to her by the shoe clerk. Moving to an empty bench, Hazeline began wearing the worn looking bowling shoes, tying the laces up carefully so that they will not come undone during the game. It has been a long time since the guardian played bowling and Hazeline was afraid that she was getting rusty.
Still…Xiu needed the exposure and since Yuurei had been kind enough to call on them for a game, why not? It was not like the raevans were professional bowling players or something so the fear of losing to those two was the least of Hazeline’s worries. Standing up, the guardian then took her place on the seat on lane 18.
Lucia had then asked about method of playing the game. Hazeline shrugged. “The aim would be to knock down as many of those white pins with the ball, Lucia,” said Hazeline as she watched a couple of players throw the ball. “I’m no player myself but our aim would be to have fun,”
“Seems simple enough,” admitted the white frei at his guardian’s explanation. Turning to Lucia, Xiu let out a soft laugh. “This game is new to me as well. Let us give it a try first then decide if the game is fun. Think we’ll be able to beat our guardians?” asked the white frei playfully at the Lucia. However, there was a spark of competitiveness about Xiu’s blue eyes. “Let’s see if we can’t beat them on our first try,”

Lucia looked incredulously at Hazeline and then back at the bowlers they passed on their way to the lane. What was so hard about this game? "I'm sure we'll beat them no problem," she said with a confident grin at Xiu. How hard could it be?
As they floated over to their lane, Lucia went towards the ball return. She liked the pink one. Smiling she picked it up and then suddenly released it as it clanked back into the Ho s**t! That was heavy! The number 11 was facing her. Lucia pouted slightly. Maybe this was harder than it looked.
Sitting down at the lane control, Yuurei began typing in the names of each of the participants.
Hazeline Xiu Yuu Lucia
She figured having the order be human, raevan, human, raevan, would be the fairest for the teams. That way, if one partner needed to make sure to roll really well to catch the team up, they would have time to get ready. She slipped her heels off and put her feet into the clown shoes, velcroing them closed. Leaning back in the chair as Lucia floated towards the table behind her, the blonde looked up at the screen that told them it was ready for them to bowl.
"You're up first, Hazeline! Show them how it's done."

“Wha- Oh, alright,” said Hazeline getting up. Selecting one of the many brightly coloured balls available, Hazeline chose the lightest of the lot. Not being a very athletic person to begin with, Hazeline walked to the lane with some apprehension. She’d preferred if she was not the first to go. Taking a deep breath, the guardian aimed and…tossed the ball down the lane. The bowling ball did a little wiggly movement before rolling itself sluggishly on the edge of the lane. Twice, it seemed as though the ball was about to hit the gutter but decided against it. When the ball finally reached the pins though, only two were knocked down. Looking sheepish, Hazeline did another toss and this time, the ball went straight into the gutter.
“Well, that was embarrassing,” muttered the guardian as she took a seat once more. “Your turn though, Xiu,”
“Thank you Hazeline,” said Xiu giving his guardian a small nod before turning to Lucia. “I hope so,” said the white frei doubtfully. If his guardian’s bowl was any indication, the white frei guessed that this game was definitely harder than it looks. Selecting a ball, the white frei gave the lane a thoughtful glance. Then, with a fluid motion, Xiu tossed the ball. The frei did better than his guardian and three pins were knocked down on his first try. On his second, three more were knocked down bringing the total to six. “That…wasn’t so bad I guess,” said the white frei thoughtfully.

Yuurei looked at the electronic score board above the ball return.
Guardians: 2 Raevans: 6
Well that wasn't good. The blonde shook her hair behind her shoulders and stood up in one fluid movement. She walked up to the ball return and grabbed a ball with a 9 on it. Standing a few steps away from the line, Yuu half-ran up to the line, bring the ball back and pushing it forward as she let it go right before the line. She watched it roll down the lane and swerve slightly to the left. As it hit the pins, 4 of them fell down. Frowning slightly the woman waited for her ball to come back and then tossed again, knocking down 4 more leaving two in one back corner standing up. Well 8 wasn't awful.
Guardians: 10 Raevans: 6
"That wasn't too bad," she said with a smile as she strode back to the table and sat next to Hazeline. It had been a while since she had bowled and she needed to get back into it.
"I'm up, right?" Lucia was kind of nervous. She grabbed the lightest ball she could -- the same one Hazeline grabbed. And floated directly up to the line. Leaning down close to the floor Lucia, with both hands on the ball, swung it back and threw it forward. The ball was a flying green orb as Lucia accidentally launched it into the air. It hit the floor, bounced off the lane, and landed, finally, in the gutter where it slowly rolled down towards the pins and was scooped away and up towards their ball return. "s**t."
Yuurei, watching the ball bounce began laughing at the frei's troubles. She didn't remember ever seeing a bowling ball bounce.
Lucia tried again, stubbornly grabbing the same ball as it came up to their return. She tried to mimic the way Yuurei had rolled it. She floated forward quickly and threw the ball as hard as she could. It rolled swiftly sideways and forward into the gutter. It had such force behind it that it actually bounced out of the gutter as it impacted it and managed to stay in the lane long enough to hit one pin before it rolled out of reach to the others.
Floating back to the table, Lucia had a scowl on her face. Fun my a**.

Hazeline had to admit that Yuurei was pretty good at this bowling thing. Already the woman had knocked down an impressive eight. But the game had just begun and who knows when the raevans might actually get a hang of this. Besides, Lucia was coming up next wasn’t she? Hazeline wondered how good that cat raevan was. She seemed pretty confident. Folding her arms Hazeline watched; surprised that Lucia chose the same bowling ball she did. Was it because Lucia was taken by its colour? Well, whatever it was, it was the bowl that mattered. Shifting in her seat slightly to get a better view, Hazeline was just in time to see the ball bounce before entering the gutter. “Wha-oh my…,” chuckled Hazeline trying to keep her laugher in. Lucia’s expression of disbelief was simply…too much and it did not help that the next ball that rolled down the lane scored a measly one.
“Perhaps the next one would be better,” said Hazeline in an attempt to cheer the flustered raevan up. “Not everyone could bowl a perfect score on their first try,”
“Guess it’s my turn though,” said Hazeline getting up. Picking a slightly heavier ball this time, Hazeline took a deep breath and swung. The ball took down a modest seven. Smiling, Hazeline swung again bring another two down with her.
Guardians : 19 Raevans :7
Xiu frowned. The guardians were beating them! This could not be happening. True it was supposed to be a ‘friendly’ match but darnit if he’d let them win by a long run. Choosing his next ball carefully, Xiu gritted his teeth and swung. The ball made a straight line towards the center and took six of the pins standing there with it. Xiu however was dissatisfied. They were still six points behind the guardians and Hazeline and Yuurei certainly looked pleased about it. Taking up another ball, Xiu took aim and bowled. The remaining four pins were knocked down. “ Yes!” said Xiu turning to give Lucia a highfive. There was still hope for them yet!

Lucia stared at Xiu did so well. Oh my god. She sucked at this. The high five was foreign to her, but she did it awkwardly. She was happy he was doing so well, but the sour taste of a game she couldn’t master was growing. She would not be the spoiled brat who gave up or wasn’t happy for her partner’s good job, so she hid her displeasure at being the only one who it seemed couldn’t do it and gave Xiu a wide smile. ”Nice!”
Yuurei grinned as Xiu got a spare. ”Great job!” she said, with a wink at Hazeline. It was definitely a competition for the silvery frei, but there was no reason the blonde and his guardian couldn’t be supportive.
But it was her turn. They were playing a shortened game – just 5 rolls each since they were on teams. And this was her second roll. Stepping towards the floor, she took a breath.
Yuurei grabbed the same ball she had before. Familiarity was always better. Pulling her arm back as she stepped swiftly forward, she then brought her arm to her front, her fingers releasing the ball to the middle of the lane. It rolled swiftly down the wooden floor and leaned slightly to the left knocking down 9 pins.
She tossed a grin at the table, the raevans looking at her with a hint of displeasure, Hazeline looking happy for their good roll. But she was always bad with trying to knock down the one last one. Throwing the ball again, she sighed slightly as her well aimed ball curved into the gutter.
Guardians: 28 Raevans: 17
The pressure was on her. And how was she supposed to deliver? The frei grabbed a purple ball, not caring what the weight was. She wouldn’t be made to look stupid. But this game was dumb. She ignored the red line where a shoe wasn’t supposed to cross. She had wings. What did she need with red lines and shoes and rules to dumb games. She floated above the lane, holding the ball in both of her hands. Right in front of the pins, she tossed the ball at them. STRIKE! the screen in front of the table read as all of the pins were knocked down. A self-satisfied grin on her face she floated back to the table.

The game had now taken on a rather competitive atmosphere. With Xiu getting a ten, the air of a friendly match had definitely taken a turn into something a little more competitive. Yuurei might have been smiling but…she was definitely throwing the ball to best the raevans. Hazeline cheered when the blond lady struck a nine. So far so good. There were still ahead of the game it seemed.
That is…
Until the group saw what Lucia had in mind…
Hazeline stared open eyed with disbelief as the kitten frei floated down the bowling lane until she was practically touching those pins. Then, with heave, she threw the bowling ball right at them securing a definite strike. Hazeline was still in shock when Lucia floated back with a satisfied grin on her face. Guess the raevans were more competitive than they thought but if Yuurei was not going to admonish her raevan, then it wasn’t Hazeline’s business to interfere as well. Choosing her ball, Hazeline then walked slowly down the aisle and with some degree of concentration, threw the ball. The red ball rolled and took down a five with the first and none on the second try. Looking disappointed, the young woman turned and took her seat once again beside Yuurei.
Guardians: 33 Raevans: 28
Well, this was interesting. Xiu wasn’t sure if what Lucia had done was acceptable but…it did make them on par with the guardians. That and Hazeline’s rather low strike made the white frei inwardly pleased. They could win this! Picking up a ball, the white frei took aim and rolled. This time, the green ball made a direct line for the pins and took down the four middle ones; leaving the remaining pins located on the left and right of the lane. This was hard. How was he ever going to hit all the pins now? Carefully choosing his ball, the white frei then fired another shot and was delighted that three more pins were taken down making his total a neat 8.

Yuurei was scowling slightly when Lucia came back with the satisfied smirk on her face. She didn’t want to cause a scene. She wouldn’t scold Lucia like she was an infant. She would just say this: ”Lucia. That was cheating. Don’t do it again. You’ll get in trouble with the people who run the lane.” And not wanting a fight she turned her attention away from the frei to watch Hazeline throw her balls.
Lucia rolled her eyes at the scowl and the warning. She turned to Xiu, thoroughly done with the stupid game. Shrugging at him she smiled and decided talking to him would be more fun than playing. She was still tired from being possessed by Marty – stupid puppy – and the annoying game was the last thing she wanted to think about.
”So what have you been up to Xiu?!” she asked, smiling. Her purple eyes glanced at the score as Hazeline came back to sit down. The game didn’t matter to her, but Xiu still seemed interested, she noted, as he got up so seriously to bowl.
Once Xiu sat back down Yuurei smiled at him, completely ignoring Lucia for now, and she rose out of her seat. She grabbed the same ball she had used the past two times and took her stance a short stride away from the throw line. Stepping forward quickly she released in a graceful arc that rolled down the lane in the middle of it, but it slowed down too much. She sighed at the 7 10 split. It was the hardest to try to make up for. The pin farthest to the rear right and the pin farthest to the rear left were both standing still.
Tossing the ball again, she aimed towards the right one with a slight curve to the left. Hopefully this would work. But, as she watched the ball roll right in between the two pins, without even grazing either of them, she realized she had failed. Well . . . 8 was good.
Guardians: 41 Raevans: 36
If Yuurei could ignore her, she could ignore Yuurei too. As she was bowling, the Kitten ignored her. ”I’ve been modding – modifying that is – clothing lately. It’s really cool! I went shopping with Vyn a while back. We both bought jackets and I took them both home to mod them! I made them look really cool and fixed them so that our wings could fit through.” She smiled at Xiu as Yuurei came back to the table. ”I could mod anything you wanted me to.” She winked as she floated out of her seat and towards the stupid line of balls. Picking up the purple one, she once again tried to mimic the way Xiu and Yuurei rolled. With her middle and ring fingers in the holes, and the rest of her fingers around the outside grasping at the ball, she a few paces back from the line. With a burst of energy she floated forward, drawing her arm back.
And then the ball slipped off of her fingers. It rolled quickly back towards the table and slammed against the legs of an empty chair, knocking it over. <********> she thought, her face turning red.
She floated over, ignoring everyone’s laughter and tossed the ball without paying attention, just to get it out of her hand. It rolled a few feet down the lane and slid over into the gutter. Waiting for the ball to come back, she didn’t want to cheat again. But obviously she wasn’t good at tossing the ball the normal way.
She grabbed the deep purple ball as it rolled back up the return. Grasping it in both hands, she floated over to the line. Keeping it wedged between her hands, Lucia bent in half and swung the ball beneath her. She went back, forward, back and then on the second forward she released it. It looked like a strong roll, she realized as it rolled down the middle of the lane. It caught up with the pins on the right side of the lane and hit them. It didn’t have much force, but enough to make the front ones fall over into the middle ones, which fell over into the back ones. By the time all of the domino effect was done. She had knocked down 8 pins!

Unlike the others who were laughing, the crash of the ball against an empty chair worried Hazeline and Xiu; Hazeline because of the damage the stray ball had caused and Xiu because the white frei was concerned about the kitten. Floating up awkwardly (he did not know if he should offer assistance), Xiu watched as Lucia threw the ball a second time. Eight pins! Well, that was a good throw! Smiling as their score beat the guardians, Xiu waited till the kitten was beside him once more.
“Clothes modifying huh? That sound’s neat,” said Xiu genuinely impressed. “And yeah, I’ll definitely know who to turn to if I need a change of fashion,”
Chuckling the white frei continued “I mean, I’ve kept this look since the day I was born after all and it does get hot in the summer…,:
“Your turn, Xiu!” called Hazeline from her seat. During the frei’s conversation, his guardian had bowled her ball but this time around, the bowl wasn’t as good as her previous ones had been. The first ball had been a gutterball while the second had only managed a weak two pins. Sighing Hazeline turned to Yuurei with a smile. “Let me get us some drinks. I’m getting a Sprite. What about you?”

Well, they were still in the lead but only by a bit. He must not fumble this! Excusing himself from Lucia, the white raevan floated up to the balls and chosed a green one. Finding its weight to his liking, Xiu then floated to the bowling lane and took a careful aim before letting the ball go.
Alright…alright…
“Yes!” exclaimed Xiu as the ball knocked all ten pins down. Now they were ahead of their guardians but quite a bit. They just need to defend this!! “Lucia! High five!” Laughed the white raevan.

Lucia turned around from her throw and smiled as she looked straight into Xiu's cerulean eyes as he "stood" at the table. The frei nodded enthusiastically at her friend. "I'll definitely mod whatever you want." She tried to imagine Xiu in -- anything but what he was wearing. A leather jacket? No. A clown suit -- haha. Lucia wasn't sure what he would want to wear. And trying to imagine him without a shirt on -- Lucia almost giggled thinking about a pasty white male chest -- well not that hers was much better as far as color went.
Yuurei grinned at Hazeline -- not because of the bad bowling, but because of the drink offer. "A diet coke?" If Hazeline wasn't drinking, she guessed she wouldn't either. Though something harder did sound good, she thought as Hazeline left and Yuu was left alone with the kitten frei who was currently giving her the silent treatment.
She watched Xiu do some impressive bowling, and, saying, "Great job!" stepped up to throw her own balls. This was her second to last throw. She needed to make it good. The woman had yet to get a strike, and after Xiu's impressive bowl, she felt the pressure. Breathing out slowly, the blonde took aim, strode a few steps, and tossed. The ball rolled down the lane at a good speed, in a good position. Yes!! Yuurei thought as it crashed with force dead center and with a crash, all of the pins fell down.
Guardians: 53 Raevans: 54
Lucia had given Xiu an exuberant high-five after his roll put them so far ahead. But it seemed that Yuu was a good bowler too. The frei's head rolled back, before she remembered she no longer cared. She didn't want to disappoint Xiu, however.
She floated up and grabbed that same purple ball. The 'between-the-legs' (if she had had any legs) seemed to work last time, so why not try again, she thought. Lucia floated backwards, her arms holding the ball inches above the floor. With a great propulsion, she tossed the ball forward sliding it along the floor. It didn't have much speed, but it was rolling straight. Five pins fell as the ball collided with them and fell into the end of the gutter.
Not too bad, she thought, waiting for her ball to return. Taking aim once again, she threw the ball as hard as she could in the same technique. And...one more pin. Ugh!!! But okay. Shrugging as she turned back to Xiu, she grinned.

"These are our last throws, guys!" Yuurei reminded everyone as the score changed on the screen and she waited for Hazeline.
