They were some distance now from Shrilal, far enough that, so far as he was concerned, they were in D'ob. The three of them were on a rise, looking down at the lush valley. Lucius tried to recall the first time he had seen this view but found himself unable to do so. He must have been very young, and as he had been by himself there hadn't been anyone to tell him what it was he was looking at.

"This is D'ob," he said after a few moments, turning his gaze down onto his sons. "Otherwise known simply as 'The Valley'. The grass here is extremely rich, and you must take care not to eat too much or it will make you ill. There is an abundance of fruit bearing plants, very few are harmful to eat but do not eat something you do not recognize until I have seen it. Notably, D'ob is also full of Nequus of all breeds. Most are good enough sorts, but some are dangerous. When you are not with me, be sure to stick together, and until you are large enough to defend yourselves take care when you speak to strangers. If you think they are threatening you, shout very loudly and run... Be aware also that some people will dislike you because of your dark coats. They are fools, but their foolishness can be dangerous. Again, until you are larger, I recommend you leave the area as soon as anyone expresses such a sentiment."

There, that was probably enough talking for the time being, he was fairly sure he had passed on the most vital points.

That was a lot to remember. A lot a lot, but his father would tell him again if he forgot... but he'd have to remember what it was he'd forgotten to ask to be told again. Well it hadn't been all that difficult... Don't eat things if he didn't know what they were, too much grass was bad, be careful of people and be very careful of people who didn't like black-coated Nequus. That seemed like about everything.

"Yes riruy," the colt said with a bob of his head, "I'll try to remember all that." He hoped Lucian would too, if both of them tried they'd be much more likely to remember everything when they needed to.

The colt swiveled his ears curiously as he listened to his father speak, trying hard to listen when he was obviously distracted by the new lands. "Understood", Lucian replied after his brother, running over the points his father had mentioned and hoping he'd remember them all. Don't eat too much grass, stick together, leave a strange nequus' company if the encounter went bad. That wouldn't be too hard he supposed. Soon, the orange-eyed colt turned his gaze from the scene below them and passed it by his brother and father.

"Why is this place called 'The Valley'", he requested to know of his father, having grabbed onto that part of his father's instructional speech quite well. For Lucian was unaware of what made something a 'valley', and why it was different from the place they had just left. From up here there really didn't seem to be much of a difference, all except for the fact there weren't very many trees. At least compared to Shrilal, that is. For the life of him that's all Lucian could think of when it came to differences, but he was certain that couldn't be the only reason. But either way, it seemed like a good idea to listen to any explanation his father gave on the subject, as always.

"A valley," Lucius said with a slight smile to Lucian for thinking to ask the question, "is a specific formation of the land. Do you see that we are standing on a rise here, and the land slopes away downward? This is one edge of the valley. Here." Lucius nodded to both foals before digging one massive hoof into the ground and dragging it backwards. "This is more or less what a valley looks like," he continued, "a dip in the land if you will, often longer than they are wide. D'ob is the largest valley in our world. Valleys may be wooded, or may mostly lack trees, or be quite varies, as D'ob is. You will not see vast areas of woodland such as you are familiar with in Shrilal, or like you will see in the Crystal Lands when we visit but there are enough to provide regular shelter. Ah yes, another thing, here in D'ob it rains a lot. It is seldom cold here, but often wet, you become used to the weather before too long and as I say, there are places to shelter when the rain gets really heavy."

He looked forward to showing them the crystal lands, Quirne, and the areas close to the mountains. Not the mountains themselves though, or the dark forest near Casa Tiner. Those were dangers he had no desire to expose his offspring to any time in the foreseeable future. Maybe one day they would explore some of Fyhi, not anywhere near the Katilenuck's lands, but never Casa Tiner. He was no fool, well not anymore. what he had seen of them, by working his way around from the red mountains, had not been nice. In retrospect, he had been fortunate to survive both trips, even though he had not ventured far. At least he'd never been stupid enough to go into the forest, that was something to thanks his past self for.

Valley. Well, that made sense then. he wished he'd thought to ask about it. Oh well. "Can we go down into the valley now then?" he asked after a moment. "I want to see what it's like!" He wanted to meet people too, he was sure that most of them were nice really, his father had said so!... But some of them would hate him because of what colour his coat was. That was an uncomfortable thought, very uncomfortable. He couldn't help it. They had no right to judge him on that! It wasn't even as though he was all black, maybe that would make a difference. Not that he cared if it didn't. People who thought you were bad because of your colour weren't worth bothering with.

Ah, see? Everything turned out well so long as he could get the bone-clad stallion to explain it to him. Just because Lucian was unable to come to that conclusion himself, didn't mean he was hopeless. Now, the only problem would be remembering what riruy had told him, and that shouldn't be too difficult. Especially since the colt had taken care to listen to what had been said. Although for his sake, Lucian was extremely glad his father had used a visual aid in his explanation, otherwise he might not have been so fortunate as to understand everything. Yes, every little bit of help Lucius gave to any explanation was well appretiated by the orange-eyed colt. It kept him from getting lost in the words, or otherwise being unable to follow in his father's train of thought.

Well suited to this particular explanation of a valley, Lucian turned to his brother and gave a wide grin. "Me too! I bet there's tons of places to play games." Unlike Shrilal, where the area was mostly covered in dense trees and it was easy to get lost if you weren't paying attention. Which had happened to Lucian once or twice, but he wasn't quite sure about that last one. Did not being found in a game of 'hide and seek' count as being lost? Probably not, but you never know.

Okay, now they just had to wait for riruy to say they could go. And boy would there be things to do! In all honesty though, Lucian was more thrilled by the idea of making friends than he was about anything else. Sure, all that other stuff was nice and all, but the colt was ready to meet new people, and play games with other foals just like himself. The thought of someone disliking him because of his black coat didn't even cross his mind at this time, for he was certain the nequus of this valley would love to play with him as much as he'd like to play with them. So certain, the thought of his father's warnings about the people of the valley had slipped his mind in such a fashion, that he totally forgot what he should do if he encountered anything menacing. ~Like that would ever happen!~ the young colt thought. Indeed, there was just way too much to look forward to in the valley.

Lucius gave a deep chuckle and nodded his head. "Yes, off you go then boys; I shall follow you down." Doubtless they would be keen to spring off at the gallop to explore this wonderful new place. He could run along with them of course, but the bone-clad Aeri had become aware though experience with Alice - he felt a brief pang as he remembered her - that sometimes children needed to run around without parents breathing down their neck. Remaining close enough to rush to the rescue if anything bad happened was of course important and he would do it, but he didn't anticipate any harm coming of letting the colts dash ahead of him.

Corvus grinned and, giving a whinny of delight, spun to face the valley once more and reared up. "Race you to the bottom Lucian!" he cried, pausing only a moment to let his brother prepare himself before springing away. Even if the people of the valley didn't like him, he'd always have a friend wight beside him in his brother. Feeling much brighter for that realization, the young Aeri raced onward, concentrating hard on not falling over his own hooves.

"Whoohoo!" the colt cried with a toss of his head to the sky, prancing on eager hooves and about to spring forward himself when Corvus voiced the challenge. Keen ears pricked forward in his brief moment of hesitation, confirming that yes indeed, his brother did just go there. "You bet!" With little to no regard to his father, having his attention no fully on Corvus, Lucian kicked off into a gallop no more than seconds after his brother, a very wide grin plastered onto his muzzle.

He had done quite a bit of running during his short life, but never had it been down hill like this! The dark-coated colt soon discovered it was difficult to keep his balance and not lean too far forward, and often times he felt as though he would trip and fall flat on his face. With this new, and unexpected worry in mind, Lucian did slow his pace a little bit, ears flicked back in mild concentration. He couldn't quite tell if he was ahead or behind his brother at this point, for his attention was on keeping himself up right and running, almost as if the mention of a race had completely vanished from his mind.

Corvus too was having a bit of a balance problem; the faster he went the harder it was, but it was impossible to slow so he just ended up going even faster. He was probably going to end up in a heap, he realized as he narrowly recovered a stumble, but he was having too much fun to worry about that, and besides, what was life without a little daring? Boring, that was what! Eventually the ground began to level off; there was still a slope but it was only slight and seemed to go on for a very long way. Well, this would have to do for the bottom then. Snorting, the colt skidded to a halt, and grinned as he realized he'd managed to stay on his hooves.

Breathing hard, he turned to look for his brother. "I think we should stop here," he called to the other dark colt, "this slope goes on for ages!" Anyway, if they went too far at high speed they'd miss out on seeing all the new sights. Giving himself a shake, Corvus turned to look back up the slope; their father was still nearly at the top, making his way down the side sedately. Well, that was fine, it gave him and Lucian a bit of time to play together without his presence.

Lucian soon discovered he was a bit behind his brother at this point, but that hardly seemed to bother him at the moment. For he was much more concerned with the aspect of tumbling forward if he were to ever lose his footing on this slope, as it felt like it could last forever. Hearing Corvus' call Lucian gladly accepted the proposal to not go any further down just yet, and a moment later halted beside his brother, breathing hard as well. Although his wasn't quite the physical activity, but the worry he had been feeling while going down the slope- not that he'd ever admit that to his father or Corvus.

"You're telling me!" he huffed, steading himself as he flashed a hurried grin to the colt beside him. "Hmm, I wonder what all we can see from here?" he mused aloud, swinging his head to the side just slightly so he could get a better view of the place. Well, for now they were much closer to the valley, and things didn't look as small as they had atop the hill. Stupid hill, why did it have to be so steep?

Lucian flicked his stub of a tail at the thought of having to continue the rest of the way down, but luckily it wasn't nearly as bad as the first half, and the colt was thankful for that. Now there was still the little matter of what to do once they were in the valley, and Lucian quickly perked up at the idea of spending some time with his brother exploring such an interesting and new place. "What should we do first?" he piped up, orange eyes bright and eager at the prospect of adventure.

"Uuuuuuh..." Corvus cast around, trying to think of something fun to try. "Let's go see what's in those bushes over there!" he gestured at the patch of densely leaved plants with one wing. "There might be something to eat, or someone hiding inside!" Of course, if it was something he didn't recognize he wasn't allowed to just try it, he had to wait for riruy to say it was safe. He didn't want to be sensible, but he knew he'd get a scolding if he wasn't. Twitching his tail, he turned his head to see how far their sire had got; not very, was the answer. Still, they could play until he turned up to say any food they found was okay to eat.
