That sucks. I'm going to a huge jam session tomorrow. I feel so small and insignificant because everyone that attends is better than me, but it's all good.

More the reason to improve, no?

Exactly. I've probably practiced (actually practice PRACTICED all of my scales and such) more in the past two weeks than I did all Summer. There's no pressure though. It's an awesomely chill atmosphere. I went last week and was terrible, and everyone was still like "Dude, I would have never thought of that stuff".

Most of the guys really shred like crazy up there. My style is far, far different from many of them, though. It's pretty cool how you can tell who listens to what based on how everyone plays.

Yeah. I know, right?
I've been known to play bluesy-metal stuff.
But i can't.
DAMN FINGER.

I sliced my finger open in the process of packing razors, so now it hurts when I play/type. Luckily, on my right hand, so strings are okay - no fingerpicking, though. x_x

Sympathetic injuries, we must be connected.

Great story. So I show up, we set up the drum kit, keyboard, and all the amps. No bass players showed up at all, so we set up the keyboard for some impromptu bass lines. It was pretty sick.

Anyways, not the point of the story. So these two super power metal dudes show up (a drummer and guitar player). Most of the players that come are just blues/jazz/indie-ish guitar players; so lots of pentatonic and major scales. These dudes step on stage, and the drummer just starts slamming his s**t. I think he broke 2 pairs of sticks in about 20 minutes. The guitar player is shredding with all these retarded power chords, while a blues guitarist is trying to fit his Tele into all the madness (which he somewhat managed to do).

These ******** turned the amps all the way up, and their s**t was just boring. The dude could really shred, but yeah. Not impressive in my opinion.

Anyways, boring story. But it was pretty funny to have that kind of pace change in the middle of all these awesome jazz/blues jams. I'll have to bring my camera next time and record a bit. Hopefully those idiots don't show up again.

Also, one of the guys offered to teach me to drum. So sweetness.

I had an injury like that a year ago with my left thumb. I couldn't play guitar for a couple weeks and by then it killed my practice flow so I didn't play again until I got a new guitar (the one I was using at the time was starting to lose its bridge, among other issues). Just a couple weeks ago I sliced open my right thumb with a pair of scissors of all things. Had to keep wrapped up for a few days, all the while with my wife complaining that I should have gotten stitches...even after a couple friends and myself said that I really didn't require them. It's healed perfectly fine with no problem. I couldn't fingerpick for a week though.

Sucks, mang.

I once broke a string and it sliced my hand open when it bounced up. Had to get it wrapped up for a while, like 2 weeks. That's about the worst I had, wasn't too bad.

Haha.
Hect.
You made me giggle. "I think he broke 2 pairs of drumsticks in 20 minutes"

Anyway,
I was playing one day way back when I was first interested in guitar.
My pops bought me GHS Boomers. (yeah, those things.)
and I was like "W00t metalzzz"
and so I re-strung the geetar, and started playing.
I had NO calluses, and tried to slide down the neck hardcore style, and ripped into my index good. Those are the bloodiest strings. I still have the E in my memory box.
neutral

And about jam sessions:
HAVE YOUR OWN ******** GEAR!
I had a dude come to an afterschool session with my now broken up band Under The Bleachers, and he came w/ no cable, no strap, no picks, no slide, and no ******** idea how to play. I was like "wtf brahhh" and he's like "wth gimmuh pik".
/endrant
Either way, bro sucked because of his lack of preparation.
I ended up letting him borrow my s**t for half the damn thing, and listening to him wank on his ******** guitar for a good hour and a half to my band's songs.
Sadness.

If someone came unprepared to play for me then I'd turn them away on the spot. What if they came like that to a live gig? I'm a nice person, but I'm nice within reason. If you don't even have your own pick, cable or other essential gear for practice then you might as well pack your bags and go back home.

Well, the club itself owns some amps and a couple keyboards, as well as the drum kit. The dude broke his own sticks.

People obviously bring their own instruments, though.

I actually forgot my strap today, but I just sat on one of the amps and played.

These are like, "official" university jams, so we have funding and stuff for gear from the student association. It's a pretty sweet deal.

God, I hate when someone comes into a room full of musicians, sucks arse and thinks they know their s**t better than everyone else. Well, I expect everyone hates that, the ******** are just so obnoxious.

When I was like fifteen, we used to use the (rather crappy and limited) instruments at the youth group in town, which was pretty good when you got a good group of musical-ish people together; we never created much, but we could piss around and have fun. But god, chavs and drumkits. I distinctly recall onea them metal guys coming in and telling everyone else they were s**t, and being unable to play. "I do it my way!" Yeah, right. Then again, we've always called him Gobshite Dan, so I guess that says something about him.

Do you ever wonder if the people you take the piss out of just for existing are aware of it?
PostPosted: Mon Sep 21, 2009 3:57 pm

These dudes were cool, and definitely could play, but they just killed the flow of the jam.

It's not like they did anything stupid or broke any of the unwritten rules that we all must follow as musicians.
