Rory fidgeted with his jacket for the hundredth time that night as Lee rang the bell at her parents' door. He'd gotten his best clothes on for the night--a nice pair of jeans and a freshly pressed white collared button-down shirt (tucked in, of course), his nicer work boots, and his best jacket. He felt woefully underdressed and had since they set foot in the neighborhood Lee used to call home. Sighing softly, he looked down at the two boxes he'd carved for the Katans--music box for the mother and humidor for the father--and felt that even the gifts were as out of place as he was in this neighborhood.

Pushing the doorbell, Lee looked up to Rory with a more than amused smile, trying her hardest not to laugh at his expense. How could Lee possibly feel nervous standing next to Rory, who currently looked like he was ready to bolt back to Farstep any second now. Poor guy. Reaching out and grabbing his hand reassuringly, she had to admit that she, too, felt some butterflies in her stomach, though for different reasons. It seemed like it had been ages since she'd stepped foot in front of these doors, and yet it felt so familiar to be here.
It wasn't a long wait before the massive door was pulled open by a doorman, who stepped aside and gestured for them to enter. Lee tugged the boy inside, looking back and smiling in an effort to relax him, hoping the interior of the home didn't intimidate him even more. Mr. and Mrs. Katan stood in front of the staircase, one with a welcoming smile, the other looking away, clearly refusing to give the couple much attention.
"Hello, Lee. Rory." Mr. Katan stepped forward, nodding to the two, though purposefully greeting them much more casually than he normally would have, sensing the boy wasn't entirely comfortable. "Glad to see you could make it." Mrs. Katan said nothing, not even a glance in their direction, clearly making a statement to the young couple that she wasn't the one who wanted them here.
But she had more planned for tonight than just dinner.

Blinking, Mr. Katan took the gifts from the boy, clearly not having expected anything like that from the him. At least the boy was courteous. "How thoughtful. Thank you." He honestly sounded grateful, turning to his wife to somewhat force her to respond. "Isn't that nice of him?" "I suppose it is, yes." Mr. Katan smiled at them apologetically on behalf of his wife's behavior, collecting himself for a moment before speaking. "I hope you don't mind that we wait to open these until after dinner. Speaking of which, it shouldn't be too long before it's ready." He handed the gifts over to a servant, asking for them to be put in the study for later. Shifting his weight nervously, the man paused for a moment before looking over to Rory. "I was thinking perhaps I could show you around the home while we're waiting, Rory. Lee, if you'd like, you can take a look around your room. We haven't touched a thing." He smiled hopefully, quite innocent looking at the moment.
Lee looked up to Rory and cocked an eyebrow. "Would that be okay?" If she wasn't allowed to come along, she figured something was up. She was surprised they'd be separated this soon, and she hoped her father wasn't going to make Rory any more uncomfortable than he already was.

"Sure, so long as they donnae trap you in your room," Rory said, trying to joke about it, but sounding a bit more serious than he'd wanted to. He looked at Mr. Katan and nodded. "I'd love t' see your home, sir. I want t' know more about Lee's life here since she knows pretty much e'erythin' about me."

Luckily for Rory, Lee'd understood it was a joke, grinning for a moment before looking back at her parents. Her mother was being an unusually terrible hostess, keeping her distance from everyone and talking as little as possible. Not that Lee could mind that.
Mr. Katan noted the grin that had graced his daughter's face for only a moment, watching the two speak carefully, almost studying them. His smile returned to him when Rory agreed to take a look around, proclaiming a small, "Excellent," before gesturing for the boy to follow. "I suppose I'll show you the study first..."
Lee waved and smiled weakly to Rory before reluctantly heading up the stairs, looking back multiple times at the two men before disappearing down the corridor and toward her bedroom. Oh, she hoped Rory would be alright left alone with her father. Perhaps she was worrying too much, but she really couldn't imagine their reasons for being here were as straight forward as a dinner with family.

Rory followed the man into the study, nervousness clear in his colorless eyes. He looked around the room, not entirely sure of its function. Most homes in Farstep had two rooms at best. He'd been lucky to be be rasied in a home that had four, and the mobile home was tiny compared to the castle Lee had apparently lived in. Lee was a princess and he was no prince.
"This is a nice home you hae here, sir," Rory said quietly, looking over the objects in the room. "Cannae help t' be curious on why you asked us here, though."

Clearing his throat, Mr. Katan smiled nervously for a moment at Rory, though couldn't keep his eyes on him too much longer. So, even Rory could see that this was less of a tour of the home and more just a chance to speak with him in private. Sighing, the man leaned against the desk in the room, gesturing as he mentioned, "You can sit if you'd like..."
Shifting his weight a bit, he looked down as he began to speak. "It is a nice home. And this..." he sighed, "This is what Lee is leaving behind. I take it she cares quite a bit for you." The man looked up at Rory's face, searching it a bit before continuing. "You seem like a nice boy, Rory. And I wouldn't say something like that if I wasn't so sure about it. I heard all about your encounter with my wife..." He smiled a bit at the thought. "I find the way you stuck up for yourself and my daughter very admirable." Not even he could have done the same thing, truth be told. Then again, he was scared to death of his wife most of the time. "But just because I like you now doesn't mean that will last. If you hurt Lee in any way..." Mr. Katan looked down again, his jaw tight. "Do not break my daughter's heart, young man. She gave up quite a bit for you." Perhaps he was too quick to accept Rory, he wasn't sure, but he saw how happy she seemed to be around him. She smiled so often now, it was so different from who he remembered.

"Wi' all due respect, sir, breakin' her heart's th' last thing I'd e'er do," Rory said, still standing, one hand on his hip. "I know I cannae offer her anythin' like this. I cannae e'en come close, but I can gi' her a good an' honest life in th' clan. I want t' marry your daughter some day, when we're both ready fae tha', till then, I'll help her be as independent as she needs t' be. She's already found work an' has her own home. You should be proud o' tha'. She's a person an' not just some doll fae you an' your wife t' take care o' all th' time."

Mr. Katan cleared his throat again, very conflicted. Rory was lecturing him again, and he had no way of staying peaceful and defending himself at the same time, so made his best effort not to get offended by the last part. "If you have a daughter someday, perhaps you'll understand why I feel the need to take care of her..." He didn't sound at all condescending, and almost seemed to feel disappointed in himself for seeming as though he considered Lee an object. Shaking his head, he stood up straight. "Dinner should be ready in a few minutes. Would you let Lee know she should come down soon?" He gave the boy directions to her room before moving around to sit at the desk, resting his arms in the chair.

"Sir, I got two little sisters. I understand your wantin' t' protect Lee," Rory said softly. "An' I'll do me best t' keep her safe, too." He headed off to find Lee's room, hoping he wouldn't get lost. Idly, he wondered if he shouldn't have brought a spool of thread.

Lee's bedroom doors were wide open, and she was poking through her closet, half admiring everything hanging inside. She almost missed having the endless amount of outfit options, but it was something she could live without, she supposed.

Rory leaned nonchalantly in the doorway, watching her awhile before speaking. "Your da said dinner will be ready soon." He walked in and looked around. "La, I bet you could fit th' whole o' me parents' home in here." He moved about, looking at some of her things, an almost sad expression on his face.

Looking back at him for a moment, she smiled before pulling something out and closing the doors of her closet and turning toward him. "I can teach you to swim while we're here. Lookit!" She held out a swimsuit, the most revealing one she had, and bit her lip before noting the expression on his face. "What's the matter? What'd he say?" Surely her father had made Rory feel worse...
