Look I don't know about the rest of you. I love Spike Lee! His a rebel and his the best filmmaker ever. ******** what any film teacher says Do the Right Thing is the best movie ever! As I rather watch that then Citizen Kane any day of the week. If you asked me to list my top five they would be:
1. Bamboozle (made me change the way I look at media as a whole) 2. When the levees broke ( Will make you question things about American cultural) 3. Do The Right Thing. (Would you had pulled a Mookie?) 4. Jungle Fever (I had it.) 5. Malcolm X (Nuff said)
Discuss: You're faves.

I love spike lee films as well. His directing skill is top notch. He picks the best of actors, his films are so unique, expose alot then what others try, and make you truly think. He is trully a genius and in my top five of my favorite directors. I wish to work with him one day. The only flaw that is not his own. Like his movies show people get these ideas and dont think straight and when a moment happens they act right away instead of thinking. Usually after watching his movies.
But I loved the movies you mention. I also love
She's gotta have it
I love his earlier collage thesis films as well. Those made you really think

Those made you really think Well I think it's the same with most directors they make you think only after the actions are taking. Also I think a lot of it are his ideas or at least his opinions on popular ideas. I also like the fact that he'll hire actors and actresses you usually won't see otherwise. I mean really would who have hired Mos Def before Spike Lee? The other bonus is most of the folks he hire rather cast or crew usually keep working for a while and usually become very successful. Like Samuel L. Jackson.

Yup I highly recommend checking out Get On the Bus I just saw that and loved it. I'm about to look at CSA: confed. states of American which is loosely based on some of his college films. He also writes books as well.

When the Levees Broke had me in tears. It's something everyone should watch. I have to pace myself with it because I tend to get angry while watching it. School Daze comes second. I'm in college now, but, I'm not necessarily experiencing it the way the movie tells it. What stands out to me is the whole issue of good/bad hair and light vs dark skin. That's still pretty relevant. Matter of fact, MTO had a little post about how some college was still doing that played out dark vs light party. stare Girl 6 is also a favorite. I can identify with Lovely. I'm kind of like her in that sense that sometimes I tend to get caught up in certain roles and well....not gonna get too deep into that, but wow. I could watch the movie over and over. Finally, She's Gotta Have It. Whenever this movie comes on, I just stop everything. I HAVE to watch from start to finish. Miss Nola Darling is a combination of so many women. She's like a symbol, basically.
I love Spike Lee. Indeed, he does make you think. His movies are literal pieces of concrete, dripping art. There's so much weight in them. I see them as layers dying to be sorted through.

I always miss it one day I will just simply rent it. *shrugs* When the Levees Broke kind of made me want to stop everything I was doing and go help out a bit. However, since it's more political than anything not much one person can do. I mean much of that city is still jacked up and people's homes are still in limbo. It's a shame really.
