Makutu spluttered as the current pushed her to the surface of the water and she drew several deep breaths in fear she would never be able to take them again for some time, but the swell of the current held her on the waters surface as she was dragged down river. The further the current took her the deeper she seemed to be going into the ravine, the rock face towering each side of her and slowly all hope of escaping this ride alive was fading from her mind.
Twisting and paddling as best she could she tried to get closer to the river bank, when suddenly an undercurrent dragged her under the water once again and smashed her against the hard rock of the river bank and blackness took her.
Some miles downriver she would be washed up, cold, beaten and unconscious.

Dark paws tapped against the soft sandy shore of the river, picking up flakes of mud as the beast traveled, his legs soaked and attracting whatever dry material they could. With a belly partly wet and drying, the male picked up his speed, droplets of water no longer dripping from his thick fur to spot the earth behind him and soak into the silt. An ebony nose filtered through the air on occasion. The myriad of scents that came to him were all recognizable; tender pines, an overwhelming smell of water and wet grass, the dying odors of prey long vanished form the area...but something was off.
Having pulled away before comprehending what it was that struck him strange, Aguta blinked, before returning his attention to the unique scent that wafted now. It was muted, water obscuring the uniqueness of the smell, but there was enough information there to tell Aguta it was a wolf, and nearby. Picking up the pace, the alpha immediately started in on the stranger.
Upon seeing the form along the shore, the male slowed, his head held low while his tail started up on instinct, dominance something inherent, even when he wasn't sure of the situation, or if the figure was even still drawing breath. Slowly he approached, cautious steps lingering just a few inches away from the female as he peered down at her, the vibrant hues of her river coat almost made a mockery of the very thing that might have ended her life. It was almost as though a piece of the river, a child of the droplets that fed his lands, had pleased Aguta with her presence, or cursed him with her death.
His tawny muzzle bent down, nudging at the body lightly as to draw her into consciousness. Breath...yes, he felt it. Her thin chest slowly rising with the life she clung to. Looking back at the river, Aguta didn't think there was any weakness in her. If she had survived the harsh environment the river offered, she earned his respect, despite her unconscious body now laying before her. Once again he bent forward the wake her, nudging at her maw a little more harshly. "Hey. Hey, wake up!"

Makutu's spirit swam in darkness, null of all earthly sensations. She was in limbo, the hook wrapped about her physical body must still be wrapped around her tail and thus held her here in limbo, her spirit wanted to soar, to leave this level of the afterlife and progress to a higher plain. But something called her back to her physical body, a voice.
She opened her eyes, still unfocused she did not, at first, see the male standing over her. Sensations can to her, she was cold, icy cold and her bodies functions now awakened and she began to shiver, quivering on the sandy bank of the river. Her head throbbed, the pain blinding her and she closed her eyes once again. Her whole body ached with fatigue but something of her former spirit was left in her, strength and a will to fight, she hung on. Another sense came to her, her sense of smell, dulled by the masking of the water though it was unmistakeably another wolf and close, very close.
Once again her eyes opened, an in moments they focused on a orange male wolf hanging over her. Azure blue eyes widen with alarm, the intent of the large male wolf unknown to her. Again her natural instincts kicked in, reasoning yet unreachable with her head throbbing from so much pain. Her body screamed in protest as she scrabbled to get her paws underneath her body.
Pushing her weight upwards her legs shook with the weight they had to bear once again and she stumbled, quickly she righted herself and ambled backwards as quickly as her worn body would allow. She curled her lips into a snarl and bared all of her white teeth, a sign of her young age for they had not yet began to yellow.
Perhaps another wolf may of looked upon her with pity and humour, she was in no state to fight and defend herself, for she could barely even stand, still shivering and her body physically tired and battered. But the natural instinct and the sheer will to fight and defend her life was admirable. The growl which sounded from her throat was anything but feeble and her eyes shown with a passion and a hint of daring.

The slow reaction from the female was like a spirit returning to a body once lost to death, her form stirring just enough until consciousness fully breached her, allowing with it to come the immediate effects of life and everything that entailed. Pain, ache, all of the five senses, and a myriad of other sensations came back to her, despite the numbness Aguta observed. He was impressed. He had no reason to be otherwise. Most wolves would have probably been lost to the river, and even if they were lucky enough to reach the shore, their life would be lost shortly afterward as exhaustion silenced any final noise they may have had the spirit to produce otherwise. But this female had not only woken, but attempted to stand and was now snarling at the male.
"Please, lie down, I doubt your body should be moved so quickly after what you've just endured," he spoke suddenly, his voice soft and patient. Her snarly didn't perturb him in the least. Aguta could see the pain her body was in. She had no means to protect herself, even if she possessed those nice pearly whites. "I'm no threat to you. Had I any wish to kill you would have made waking you a waste of my time. I would have done so immediately after I found you. So please, relax."

Makutu swayed and the pain present in her head nearly made her blackout. But she righted herself and someone still managed to stand. The male informed her that he would not harm her, if he had wanted to do so he'd of done it already. Makutu wanted to snarl further, her mind still unclear, to her this sounded like a threat, what sport would there of been in killing an already grounded wolf. She dare not shake her head to clear it in case she lost her balance again so she mulled the situation over. His voice had been relaxed, not threatening and also there would be no fight should he attack anyway, defending herself would be fruitless for her condition would not permit it and as she had already acknowledged there would be no sport in killing a grounded wolf. So she slowly sank back down to the ground.
Her legs quivered as she lowered her weight, not wanting to disgrace herself by simply collapsing. She lay down on the river back, lowering her head also, resting it on her forepaws and closing her eyes, trying to blind herself of the pain. It was no good. She opened her eyes and looked up at the male, rising from ebony paws to another set of blue eyes. 'If you are not going to kill me I am going to need your help to live.' Makutu did not lack when it came to will, but will alone would not heal her body now, she needed heat to warm her body so it could function more effectively and begin to heal itself. 'You must lay with me, encircle me, press your belly to my back. I need your warmth.'

The painted male stood from the female all the while, his crystal eyes following every little action she took, however minute they were. Her quivering body was expected and as she finally settled down, accepting his words and the fact that defending herself would be futile, Aguta was thankful she had finally moved to ease her pain. He took the short moment to pull his eyes from her, surveying the area. In this vulnerable moment, he couldn't and wouldn't be too careful. Finding nothing of interest, he looked back toward the injured stranger, perking his ears forward as she finally addressed him. Marvel shown in his eyes.
Her request wasn't something he had any heart to think on, knowing function and efficiency was a priority to him above honor or whatever sense of pride he was supposed to have. If laying with the female would help to bring her back to health, than he would do so without question or any thought to how this might be perceived. The male pulled up beside Makutu, his body now parallel to her own, until he ducked his paws down, caving into a quick descent so that his hips her right along her back and his paws moving to curl around and beneath her. His tail pulled around the female's thin hips while his head and shoulders moved her body a bit, certain the sudden stress would be uncomfortable for her, but only for a moment, and the pose was the best way he could press as much heat as he wanted to her. Aguta settled there, lowering his voice, "Are you comfortable?"

The male began to lower himself, embracing her and as he came alongside, his positioning caused a quick jolt of movement from herself, causing a sharp stabbing bolt of pain to run across her shoulder. She hissed with the pain though quickly it subsided and she relaxed again. The warmth his closeness provided was invaluable. Her tied muscles began to relax further with the heat and her body began shivering more vigorously as if it now had fuel to fight for her life. She smiled meekly and closed her eyes, resting her head back upon her forepaws.
The male whispered quietly, close to her ear. 'I am.' She answered softly. She allowed herself to boarder on sleep for a few moments, the males heat seemingly to take away most of the sensation of pain, though she was not naive in thinking it had vanished, it would return once the male left her. 'You do me a great honour, tell me, why are you helping me?'

As he heard her answer he relaxed just a tad, his body in the same position but his muscles less flexed and ready to move. Instead he settled as he intended, doing the same as the female by laying his lean maw onto his paws and only occasionally lifted his head to peer about the area, not even once allowing his defense to drop. They were both at their most vulnerable, and not one to take unnecessary risks, he kept his eyes open. Aguta did not know where this female had come or why she was here. What had driven her to the river? Had it been merely an accident? Or was she driven here by a force that intended to end her life with Tomkin's very physical jaws.
She continued and he listened. Glancing toward her eyes he found he didn't have to think much to form a reply. "I suppose it is instinctual. I found a half-drowned wolf in my territory...I suppose this makes you my responsibility," he spoke, his voice calm and had a low volume. "Plus I am curious. I never thought someone could survive the rapids let alone the unforgiving boulders jutting from the water. And yet, here you are."

'Here I am.' Her voice echoed his faintly. She noted the way in which he had stated it was his territory, she wondered if she was currently being warmed by an alpha male or simply a lone wolf who roamed these parts. To her it didn't really matter at this moment, first and foremost she needed to regain her strength.
Makutu was a young head strong adult, she came from a small family pack but she had felt something lacking and thus left her quaint family life behind her in search for something more. How she had ended up in the river she did not know, it had happened so quickly, the path had been wet and treacherous. Whether it was luck or fate that brought her this far, she did not know, all she knew was that she was here now.
As she began to warm and the pain began to subside in her head she became painfully aware of how close the strange male was to her, though a comforting though came to her, that it was clear he meant her no harm, in fact the total opposite. With her head clearing she once again returned her thoughts to his words and formed the question, 'I am in your territory?'

Aguta's head remained against his paws, his body perhaps unnaturally still aside from the slow expansion and deflation of his chest and belly, his breathing calm. Despite how relaxed he was portraying himself, Aguta was still very alert, his eyes moving constantly through the wood around them while his pointed ears followed along, doing their duty. Naturally he heard her next comment. A soft grin slid onto his maw, smearing the handprint marking along his cheek a bit further northward as he thought of a reply. This was indeed his territory and the male was rightly proud. "Yes, welcome to Tomkin," he answered her, "You have my permission to rest here until you are back on your feet again."

Makutu lifted her head, it ached but she could tolerate it. She tried to twist slightly to look the male in the eye over her shoulder, but her body groined in protest and she gave up on the gesture, Makutu was always under the general believe that the eyes were the gateway to the soul and a lot could be seen in them, she like to address anyone face on, holding their stare as not to seem as though she was hiding anything, words sometimes being twisted to suit the users purposes. He would have to be content with the sincerity in her voice and she would have to be content with his tone in return, for now. ‘Thank you, I am grateful for your offer and I accept.’
Even if she had somewhere to go to she would have had to have stayed here, her body would not have allowed her to travel far in this condition. She lay there, absorbing the males body heat, her muscles relaxing and her shivering subsiding. As she felt a little of her strength come back to her, she tested herself, pushing her legs underneath herself and standing. She stood for a moment and looked down at the male, ‘I am sore and I ache, but you’ve given me enough nurturing that I will be able to walk,’ She laughed weakly, ‘Well, amble. I do not like being out in the open in this condition, even with you at my side. Is there somewhere I can rest until I am fully recovered?’

Aguta lay there with a silent curiosity, observing the female not caring at all if she minded his staring. His silent awe was understandable; this female had just survived the rapids and now was moving about, able to slowly pull to her legs and even with her aches and pains, it was astonishing to the male. Her little attempt to look back at him was the first little surprise, but that was followed suit by her thanks and soon enough fidgeting from her that resulted in her weak legs standing strong enough to hold her up. Aguta stood immediately as she had moved, balancing himself beside her without touching her, there in case she collapsed, but wasn't about to hinder her either. "You're a strong one, aren’t you," the comment sounded ridiculously obvious once out of his mouth, but he hadn't really been thinking while he said it anyway. Instead he was thinking of how to help her to the den and how to do so most efficiently. The only option seemed to just stick by her side until they made it there. If any obstacle came along the way then they would face it then. "Of course," he started, "I insist you stay in Tomkin's meeting den. It's an open mouth of a cave and despite its size, is quite warm. You'll be welcome there." Not that the other wolves of the pack had much of a voice in the matter, though Aguta figured he wouldn't meet any resistance to allowing the female stay. The pack was generally placid on the idea of outsiders, even some eager to invite them in, and if Aguta felt there was no immediate threat he would harbor yet another strange female to their nest.
I am very sorry for the slow reply.

Makutu smiled weakly at the male and refrained from nodding in confirmation worrying that it may send her off balance if not cause further darts of pain down her neck. She inhaled deeply whining slightly she placed one paw in front of the other and took two unstable steps forwards. She wobbled by soon regained her balance and with a few more steps she began to learn how to deal with the aches and pains of her body enough so that she could amble along without falling over. With the male at her side she was confident enough that she would make it to the main den. This was his territory after all and from the initial impression of the male and the way he seemed aware of his surroundings he cared for his boarders well.
She made little conversation with him trying to simply focus on getting to the den where she could properly rest and heal in relative safety but one thing bothered her, 'I have yet to learn of your name.' She stumbled slightly but shakily regained herself and announced, 'I am Makutu.' she lifted her head slightly showing pride in her name but the gesture was short lived as it brought her great discomfort and she returned to a more relaxed pose.

The effort she made was a curious thing to the male, albeit, the focus of his emotions lingered around something akin to awe. How many would so quickly be eager to move? Was it simply instinct that drove her or a deeper intelligence that told her to move? He accepted both and focused instead now moving himself, keeping his body close as she ambled along, still not drawing near enough to be a hindrance. Gently he posture steered her in the right direction. They could take their time, there was no immediate threat as far as Aguta was aware, and he didn't desire her moving any faster than she was.
The jutting monoliths became taller, molding the foundation of the hills with which his pack would thrive beneath, and with that, the terrain tougher. Luckily the alpha knew they weren't too far from the den now, needing to pass between few a ragged boulders into a shallow, tree studded, down where the mouth of the den would be waiting below. Flicking a ear toward the female, he heard her question and then her own name. It was a nice lilt echoing in his mind. "Makutu, it is a pleasure," he responded with a formal indifference to his tone, "You may refer to me as Wraith. It's what I'm most commonly known by, at least."

Makutu found the going a lot harder now and she had to slow her pace to deal with the landscape, she was not out of breath but her body simply began to ache even more, her muscles having to work harder to pull her up the incline and over any obstacles. She hoped it wasn't much further as her strength was fading fast not and part of her wondered if she'd made the right decision to push on to the den so soon. Instincts told her that laying out on the bank of the river like they had been was not safe for a long period of time, even though the male was protecting her something deeply written inside her told her to move. Looking about herself now she concluded it would be even worse if she should stumble here and not be able to continue, it was more open and less sheltered and more to the point, unlike the male she did not blend into these surroundings well. Thus she slowed her pace, trying to take it easy and pacing herself to not exert her muscles.
She was not quite herself, her body having taken a beating she simply focused upon reaching the den to rest and recover, she hoped then she'd be able to get to know her protector, little did she know how sealed he was from others, giving little information or emotion away. She did however note his words and between frowns as she fought though various ripples of pain she questioned, 'I may refer to you as Wraith? So this is not your actual name then?'
