Probably the best of all the versions and the most frightnening. Lon Chaney gives an incredible performance. His face was so shocking when Mary Philbin took off the mask that people in the audience actually fainted. Even though it's silent you can almost hear him screaming, laughing, and speaking. My favorite of all the versions and the one that made me into a Phan.

I saw this on TCM one night and taped it. personally, I get restless with all the silence so it's not one of my favorites. I also don't see the fear in it, but I am also immune to it in movies and books. Not sure why, I just am. So, yeah... However, it was still a really good movie considering the time it was done in. I loved how Christine told Raoul to shove off before she knew Erik. That was the BEST. Of course, watching it the second time through I had to add in my own dubs. It was... crazy. Like I said, I can't do the silence.

Just finished watching it. I have to say it was VERY good. Really... really loved it. Of course my brother and I were making jokes about it the whole time, but it was fun.

I have to admit, I was extremly disappointed with that movie. I heard so many people complimenting it, that I was expecting one of the most awesome movies ever...
And it was just regular, if not below average.
To start off, WHAT WAS WITH THAT ENDING?! Please, please, it was so retarded that I wanted to cry. When Erik pretented that he was holding something, the whole mob backed away, and then he just opened his hand, I could so imagine he saying "Erik fooled you! =D" And what was in their heads when they planned Erik's death? C'mom... *falls on the river and dies THE END* That was pathetic. I couldn't believe they changed Leroux perfect ending to that.
And there was the fact that the movie wasn't a single bit scary. Of course, since I read the book I would have never been frightened by it, but I'm the biggest chicken when it comes to horror movies... I had to close my eyes and grip my friend's arm many times in Donnie Darko, which is actually suspense. Two or three years ago, my dad read a horror tale to me and I spent 3 sleepless nights. The 1925 movie should have, at least, made me think "that could've been frightening to people who didn't read the book." Then, there's the fact that the music didn't match what was happening many times, ruining the suspense...
And Lon Chaney's face wasn't that bad. Yes, its quality was awesome for something made over 80 years ago, but really, fainting by looking at him? Please...
Maybe the reason I wasn't too fond of it is because the silence couldn't capture Leroux's essence. Or maybe because I was watching it in a tiny, tiny screen of bad quality in my laptop. Who knows?
Everything I do is that I'm not watching it again.

Personally, I think Lon Chaney looked more like Frakenstein of a Munster than the Phantom.... but yeah, it was back when silent films and bad special effects were alive with the dinasours and everything so they have an excuse.
I still wanna see this version, is it available still?

I still wanna see this version, is it available still? Can you say "Two Disk Special Edition"? Yes there is. Hehe, I have both versions the 1925 original and the 1929 "enhanced"... the enhancements were dying a few of the scenes completely purple or blue or something... best scene was the rooftop... completely blue except for the red phantom.... he may have been shouting from a megaphone "ERIK OVER HERE"

Kira the wanderer You lost me when you started mentioning colors xd I though it was black and white. What blues and purples and reds do you speak of? The film IS B&W, but they went in and filtered it with one color (using a computer) so that it was in the various shades of the one color instead. Or something of the like.
