Aphismet and Rivener
and
Kenth (tooaya)

LOCATION: Kenth's clinic

Rivener didn't understand why HE had to come along. It's not like he could drive, so he wasn't really sparing Aphi any discomfort. The man looked positively ashen by now, and it worried Riv greatly. "Are you sure you're alright to drive? We could take a cab..."

"No, no, I'm fine. Just-... just keep me awake and read the street signs, tell me when I need to turn." Aphismet spoke quietly, his brown eyes only half-open as he struggled against the drowsy-making cold pills. He'd hardly EVER suffered a flu this bad, and after missing two days of work with no apparent improvement the chef had finally given in and called his doctor.

Only, his doctor was no longer anyone's doctor, apparently. Dr. Mills was moving to some other country and had given all her patients away to other doctors. Dr. Larine, it was now. Kenth Larine. All the way in Barton! Aphismet had called ahead and managed to get an appointment with this new doctor for the following day. It was to the clinic the pair was now headed.

Already Aphismet had nearly driven them off the road and only swerved back to safety at Rivener's hectic shaking of his arm, the clawed fingers even once resorting to grabbing the wheel and pulling it straight again. Thank goodness they were almost there now: Aphi couldn't take much more of Rivener's accusations of "you're trying to kill us!"

"Here it is, turn left here," Riv spoke, keeping his eyes peeled for the street number he'd written down. Ah, it was simple enough to find: the business was quaint, and the clinic's name was printed on the windowpane. "Park anywhere near here, that's the place."

Rivener watched very carefully as Aphismet found a parking spot and carefully pulled in, the engine finally turning off. The Sigel let out a breath he hadn't known he was holding in. He promised himself there's no goddamned way they were driving back. They'd take a cab. Riv couldn't handle another trip like that. "C'mon, let me help you out." He wouldn't have needed to say anything: Aphi had already fallen asleep on the wheel. Sighing, Riv exited the passenger side and moved to the driver's door, opening it quietly and pulling Aphismet out bodily. "Hey, wake up," he said none too gently, frowning. Contrasting his gruff voice, the Scorpion was carrying Aphi with one of the chef's arms slung over Riv's shoulders rather carefully. Riv closed the driver's door and it was that slam that woke Aphi again, the chef blinking to consciousness.

"Ngh? Hunh?"

"We're here. You got your wallet?"

"...Yeah, everything, it's here. We're here?"

"Yes, Aphi, we're here. Can you walk? I don't want you hobbling in there like an infirm, people will panic. C'mon, wake up." With a sharp shake Riv forced Aphi to look him in the eye. With Riv's assistance the white-haired man stood up straight and nodded, ready. Lips set, Rivener led the way towards the clinic.

It was only a few doors down from the parking spot, but Aphismet dragged his feet the whole way, feeling like it was a mile away. Rivener opened the door for him, the dim buzz barely heard in the back room. Aphismet walked to the reception desk by reflex more than anything, noting that there was hardly anyone else here. Either the clinic wasn't busy, or the doctor was effective at getting folks in and out.

Riv crinkled his nose. "Smells like meds," he complained.

"Better than smelling like sick, right?"

"Ew."

In the working field of private clinics, Kenth was not a famous physician. Most people never heard of him, at least, not knowing that he already quit his better job for a smaller place to settle in. As a result the doctor did not receive many transfer patients. Even if he did, half of them went to other doctors because they were not used to his way of treating them. Being anything but warm and welcoming, Kenth himself was certain that a lot of people had problems with his attitude. But it was part of his personality, wearing a fake, smiling mask was simply not his way of doing things. Besides, Kenth had enough savings from the past to support himself even if he was without patients for a long time. Therefore, the doctor was always prepared to see a patient, and never was surprised or hurt when the said patient switches doctors.

Nontheless, it was rare to see a transfer patient, especially from someone he didn't know of. Did the woman just pick a random number blindfolded?

When Aphismet (or rather, Rivener dragging him) stumbled into the clinic the doctor was already at the front desk, reviewing patient records. He had gotten the new transfer patient just a few days ago, and the said patient called immediately yesterday to schedule an appointment. Kenth wondered why Aphismet was so eager to meet him, not expecting the man to be sick. Luckily for the patient Kenth was never a busy doctor, so the appointment was conveniently placed on the second day, but that also left Kenth no time to review his records carefully. Hearing the doorbell ringing, the doctor looked up from the records, only to have his eyes met with a strangely dressed man, who looked as if he wanted to run out of the clinic at any moment. The front desk effectively blocked the missing parts from Rivener's body, so Kenth blinked, wondering if this was the transfer patient.

"Mr. Aphismet Delaran?" Kenth asked, his voice unsure. The patient looked a bit too strange to him, though he understood there were a lot of strange people in the neighborhood, including someone named Dr. Kyou.

Rivener turned his head to the man addressing him, blinking red eyes for a moment before smirking with a tilt of his head. "Nah, HE'S Aphismet. Sick as a dog, he is. D'you need his medical card or something?" Riv asked with a confused frown, unabashedly reaching into Aphismet's jacket pocket and fishing around for the man's wallet.

Aphismet coughed, covering his mouth and leaning heavily on the desk with his other hand. He waited until the fit passed before batting Rivener's hand away with his elbow. "Go, sit. I can t-take care of this." His words were heavy with a stuffy-nose accent, and his eyes were bleary and unfocused. He turned towards the man at the desk (not realizing that it was the doctor himself greeting patients) and smiled pathetically. "Sorry, I, uh. I got the flu or something... Lemme get my coverage card or somethin'." Aphi reached into his pocket and took out the wallet Rivener had been searching for earlier. With a tired frown Aphi opened the thing and proceeded to look for the proper card, wobbling slightly in place and making no progress at all, simply staring at his license.

Rivener sighed as Aphi told him to go wait. Shrugging, the Scorpion crossed his arms and moved to the waiting chairs, flopping himself down on one and rustling his wings into a comfortable position. Ruby eyes betrayed how bored Riv already felt as he glanced around. Hn, not even a magazine to read? Rivener had never been in a real clinic save Dr Tsu's, but even THAT man had magazines! Albeit rather questionable ones...

The Sigel's gaze settled on Aphismet again, finding the man paused in mid-card-retrieval. With a dramatic sigh and roll of his eyes, Rivener got up again and headed for the white-haired chef. "Jeez, Aph. Here, let me." The Sigel grabbed the wallet and flipped through the cards, finding the proper one and pushing it onto the desk towards Kenth. "There. Sorry he's so weird, he's kinda high on cold medicine."

No, you are the one who's weird. Kenth wanted to say. Since Rivener finally moved around and Kenth finally stood up, the doctor could see that the man he had assumed to be Aphismet earlier had no lower body. What would be the lower body was a long ribbon. Kenth didn't need to search very hard in his memory to tell that Rivener was a raevan, although this one was a little bit different than others he had met...

Although right now, he had a patient to attend to. Focusing his attention on the real Aphismet, Kenth frowned. Just not too long ago someone had assumed his clinic was the emergency room and demanded to be treated. Now here's another one. It was not because Kenth didn't like emergency situations, but this guy, and flu? If he had the strength to come, shouldn't he be going to the hospital instead? The doctor questioned Aphismet's intentions, but since the man was registered, he had no choice but to treat him. At least, he'd need to make him feel slightly better.

Kenth waited patiently as the sick man dug through his stuff, and eventually receiving the card from Rivener. "I can see that." He commented bluntly and scanned the card before handing it back to the raevan. "Mr. Delaran, please have a seat, and just a suggestion, it's better to stay home or go to the hospital when you are this sick. Running around won't do you any good."
PostPosted: Thu Sep 17, 2009 12:24 pm

Rivener helped Aphismet to the designated seat once Dr Lavine ordered him. The chef was probably half-comatose from drowsiness already, so the Scorpion appointed himself the man's assistant. He followed Aphi in and would stay at his side, perhaps to answer questions if Aphi fell asleep again.

Dr Lavine's mention of not running around when that sick made Riv frown at the chef in a "See? Told you so!" kind of way. "He said he needed to get a note from a doctor to miss more than two days of work, and he's already missed the two. Also, maybe he needs stronger pills or something? What he's taking only makes him pass-out tired and doesn't seem to have lessened his symptoms much lately."

"Rivener, I can take care of my own que-quest-... Hey, we have the same hair color!"
Aphismet pointed to Kenth's hair with a small tired smile.

Rivener's lips quirked, not amused. Well, that sentence certainly proved that Riv was needed here! Fists on hips, the Scorpion turned to Kenth with a highly expectant stare, as though fully thinking that this doctor would be able to take care of his lickedy-split.

Kenth shook his head, not disappoving Rivener's words, but rather disapproving the whole note system at Aphismet's workplace. "I understand." He replied to the raevan's explanations, and raised an eyebrow at Aphismet's exclamation of his chair color. Either the man was so sick that his brain started malfunctioning, or he was just someone who didn't know what situation he was in. As far as Kenth could see, Aphismet seemed to fit the latter. It was no wonder he had mistaken Rivener for the man at first (Kenth denied the fact that it was because he couldn't see the missing parts of the raevan)! From the way the two interacted, Rivener seemed to be the one who's "guarding" his guardian.

Luckily, the doctor had some handly tools that he often carries around when he's at work. Kenth reached into his pocket and took out a mini-sized flashlight, and bent down so he's close to his patient.

"Open your mouth wide." Kenth said, turning on the flashlight, "I'm going to take a look at your throat. Any other symptoms asides from feeling drowsy and weak?" The doctor suspected that the flu virus had become drug-resistant, but he had to make sure.
PostPosted: Thu Sep 17, 2009 1:41 pm

Aphismet leaned back in the chair and opened his mouth as ordered, although just leaning back like this was threatening to send him into slumberland. As it was the brown eyes were fluttering shut and snapping back open from time to time as Aphi tried to keep his mouth open while a light flashed inside.

Rivener knew he'd have to answer the questions now that Aphi's mouth was otherwise occupied. He crossed his arms and floated back to be out of Dr Lavine's way, rather pleased that the man was at least appearing to know what he was doing. "He's usually not THIS drowsy: the pills he took said they would make him tired like this. He's been weak, though, yes. He's also been unable to keep food down very well, he coughs, is stuffy, and complains of aches AAAAALL the time." Riv rolled his eyes at this last, obviously annoyed at having to listen to his guardian's gripes. Even if he HAD pretty much been taking care of Aphismet the entire time he was sick. It was best for Riv's self-image if he didn't seem to, ah... Too softy or something.

"Other than that... He's just miserable."
Rivener shrugged.

Aphismet closed his mouth once the light was clicked off, nearly nodding off in the chair again.

Kenth inspected Aphismet's throat while listened to Rivener. Somehow, he had the feeling that Aphismet's previous doctor had only given him the drug to make him sleep and not move around. Kenth touched the man's forehead, but there was not a fever, which meant that the drug probably suppressed his immune system also, making the matter worse. "His throat is swelling." Kenth stated the fact after clicking off the flashlight and putting it back. Although he wasn't sure which person he should be addressing the man's problem to, seeing as patient himself is already half-unconscious. The doctor figured it would be better to let the raevan hear his words rather than talking to a wall (as in Aphismet, who had the responsiveness of an inanimate object). "Do you know where the aches come from? Did he tell you?" Kenth looked at Rivener as if he was the parent of the sick Aphismet. But before the raevan could apply he continued, "The drug was not a good one at treating a viral flu like the one your guardian has. Virus cannot be killed by antibiotics, so one must rely on his own body's mechanisms to get rid of it." Kenth tiled his head a little, not sure if Riverner would understand what he was saying. "The drug kept this mechanism from working, so even though he's resting, his body is not healing itself."
PostPosted: Thu Sep 17, 2009 2:08 pm

Rivener paid attention to every word. Thank goodness he watched enough Discovery channel programs to give him a basic understanding of what Kenth was explaining. The crossed arms opened again to prop one hand at the Scorpion's hip, the other pointing to his own body. "He said it was achy everywhere in his torso, like a general ache, but he complained mostly about his back. Like his muscles were sore, he said."

Kenth's explanation about the medicine being the wrong one for this case sent Riv snickering slightly. "Well, that'll teach him: he didn't GO to a doctor, he just randomly picked the strongest over-the-counter medicine and took that. Of course he'd get it wrong, with his luck. So he need to take some kind of metabolism-boosting drug?" Riv tilted his head in question. Hell, if Aphi needed a shot of adrenaline once in a while, Rivener would be more than capable of providing that. But he doubted it was a proper treatment for long-term. "Vitamins or something? Or just quit drugs altogether and simply rest?"

Aphismet had fallen asleep now, snoring softly through his partly-opened mouth. His head was lolling to the side. He looked like a dead man, pale like that and hanging limply on a chair. If it wasn't for the weird stuffy snoring, Rivener might have thought his guardian kicked the bucket.

"The virus must have gotten to his muscles then." Kenth shrugged, relieved that it wasn't anywhere more serious, like the lungs or the stomach. He glanced over at the patient, and realized Aphismet had already lost consciousness and was in deep sleep. Kenth sighed and looked at Rivener with a helpless smile. This was the first time he'd seen role reversed between a guardian and his raevan. The last one he had met came close, but not like this.

"I don't think he can leave any time soon." The doctor pushed up his glasses and commented the obvious. "Help me out and carry him to the inner room, there's a ward for him to rest on." Seeing the raevan's muscles, Kenth did not hesitate to dump the job onto Rivener. He believed the raevan would do a much better job at carrying his guardian. The doctor himself turned and walked ahead so he could unlock and open the patient room's door. Meanwhile, he continued to preach to Riverner on methods to take care of his guardian.

"That does explain the drug's ineffectiveness. Luckily it's not too late for him. I will prescribe some general antibiotic without surpressor effects for him to keep his immune system focused on fighting back the virus. Other than that, if he's usually healthy, his body should be able to take care of the illness. Just make sure he doesn't move around too much, have him drink a lot of water. As far as vitamins go...it would help if he can take some vitamin C pills, although fruits like oranges will also work."

While speaking, the doctor opened the second patient room's door and gestured Rivener to go in. The ward was placed against the wall on the door's side, and the room was not big. The equipment within were all designed to monitor the patient's status, although Kenth doubt this patient will require them.

The words The virus must have gotten to his muscles sounded like a very BAD thing, but the doctor was acting rather calm and almost relieved about it, so Rivener didn't let the panic well up too far inside himself. Hearing the doc announce that Aphi wasn't leaving anytime soon was a surprise. Riv could easily have carried him out to a cab and just brought him home, but Kenth kindly offered to let the chef sleep off most of his medicine drowsiness in a back room. A corner of Riv's lips lifted a bit in a mild smile and he nodded, moving forward to bodily lift the chef out of the examination chair.

It was easy enough, of course. Lifting one single human was more than easy for the Sigel, and Riv carried Aphi quietly as he followed Kenth to the aforementioned ward, placing him down on it and gently tugging the thin blanket into place over the man.

Aphi gracelessly sputtered and snored a little louder, turning his head to be more comfortable and then apparently accepting this as his new bed.

Riv snickered and floated back a bit, crossing his arms as he "stood" next to Kenth. "Water, oranges or vitamin C, prescription. Gotcha." This doctor was a lot more efficient than the old one. Well, Rivener couldn't know for sure as he'd never BEEN to the old doctor, but for some reason he could GUESS. Dr Larine just seemed more efficient than most. "Thanks a lot, Doc. I'll stay back here so I'm not in your way or anything with other patients."

Treating an unconscious patient, to Kenth, seemed to be a lot easier than treating an annoying and awake patient. The doctor watched in satisfaction as Rivener laid his guardian on the ward and helped him to pull the blanket in place. Despite his intimidating looks, the raevan was actually a lot more agreeable than Kenth had imagined. Although now that the patient was settled and Rivener had done his job, there really wasn't anything else to do.

"It's fine." Kenth inched away from the ward a little bit. "There won't be any other patients today." His appointment schedules were sparse, allowing maximum time for himself. "I'm going to head to next door and write a prescription, you can stay here and take care of him."

With that the doctor exited the room, leaving the door half closed behind him. He quickly did what he said he would do, and sighed the prescription with a common antibiotic drug. The whole thing felt natural, but then the fact that he was talking to a raevan all this time struck him. Kenth frowned, realizing that he was treating Rivener like a human being. To him, before this day, any raevan that he met was seen as a subject of interest. Kenth would look at the raevan full of wonder, and his curiosity would sometimes take priority over his duty on being a doctor. Perhaps it was because he had seen many raevans now and he had gotten used to them, but Rivener's presence felt much more human to him than others. On another thought, Kenth did notice that Rivener had more body portions than other raevans he had met. Was this a raevan's development, or was it his change in attitude?

In thought, Kenth stopped short in front of the room that his patient stayed in, and observed the raevan's demeanor.
PostPosted: Fri Sep 18, 2009 9:09 am

Rivener nodded with a raised eyebrow when Kenth offered to go write that prescription. This doctor had no other appointments today? It was rare for a doctor to be this free of work, wasn't it? Or perhaps Dr Lavine was only just starting out and had yet to find many patients of his own... Whatever the reason, Rivener figured it was most likely harmless. This guy at least knew what he was doing, and if he had a limited number of people under his care, all the better for Aphi. "I'll be here," Riv replied, watching the man leave the room.

Once he was alone, Rivener turned his attention to the room. Aphismet was fast asleep after all, he had no need for Riv's care at the moment. Red eyes took everything in languidly, in no hurry. A chair, a small counter that probably hid some medical tools behind those cupboard doors. There were posters on the wall of human anatomy, things that showed how a knee with osteoperosis looked compared to a knee without. A calendar with pictures of nature. A window that looked out into the back streets, curtained off. All in all, it was a pretty boring place.

Rustling his wings, wondering what the heck he was going to do the whole time Aphismet was konked out, Rivener sighed. Shrugging in resigned boredom, the Sigel floated to the single chair in the room and sat down in it, letting one arm hang limply over the armrest while the other propped his chin up. He pushed the curtains aside a little bit so he could stare outside. ...Better than nothing.

Through the half opened door the doctor saw all of Rivener's actions, which was...nothing out of ordinary. In fact, other than the bottom-less body, there wasn't anything else that was strange. Sure, the raevan looked demonic, with horns and wings and all. However, considering that his creator also had similar features, Kenth felt that he shouldn't be surprised at all. Eventually the observation became quite boring and meaningless, so Kenth finally stepped into the room, holding the prescription. He glanced at Aphismet, who was still sleeping soundly, and turned to the raevan sitting on the chair.

"Here." He handed the prescription to Rivener. "Go to a pharmacy and give them this prescription, they should know what to do." Since Rivener was occupying the chair, Kenth could only stand beside him. "The prescription allows for 3 refills, but I don't think it would be necessary." He added, and continued to search in his mind if there's anything else he missed. After a few minutes of silence, the doctor added, "there's a slight chance that your guardian is allergic to the drug, if he'd never taken it before. If that's the case, stop taking it immediately and let me know."

There, that should be all the precautions. All there was now was to wait for the patient to wake up and leave. The doctor tilted his head sideways and looked at Aphismet. How did the man get here in the first place? A cab was unlikely because he did not hear any cars at the entrance driveway, which meant whatever transportation method he took, the said transportation dropped them off far away.

"Did...someone drive him, when coming here?" Kenth asked the raevan hesitantly. In his mind, he'd rather want to believe it was Rivener who did the driving (unfortunately for him, it was impossible).
