Kale peeked silently around the tree's massive trunk, eyes narrowing slightly as he caught sight of his quarry - a raven cackling in its own strange language hopped along a nearby tree branch, carefully tucking the shiny rock away in its little nest. Kale - had no idea why the birds liked such things...but it always amazed him the things he could find in their hidey holes. Provided of course that you could follow them there..and then find a way into them, which could be difficult considering the troublesome birds had a habit of making them in trees.

Kale hunched down behind the bush, quietly waiting for the bird to leave as he formed a plan of attack so that he could explore the nest. True he could have rushed out and scared the beast off - but that would ruin any future plundering as the cleaver creature would no doubt abandon this site thereafter - something he'd learned early on. Flicking his ears uncertainly the teen eyed a nearby ledge - a neighboring branch ran fairly close to it..and if he was careful, really careful he could probably level himself up on the ledge there..leap to the sturdy branch of the old tree and with a bit of maneuvering maybe..just maybe reach the nest.

Now he just had to wait for the bird to leave.

Wandering away from Kalama for a moment, Adam decided to give himself a little alone time. The older wolf was lightly napping in the shade, her vivid red coat easy to spot in the otherwise gray and black mottled mess called "light filtering through the trees". The two were not exactly close yet, merely travellers bound together in the search of their loved ones - yet the slightest tinge of reluctance pricked his heart when he padded away; brief, and then gone as quickly as the wind goes.

Life alone for much of his puppyhood made Adam quite a silent walker. He had to be, with a pelt that never matched his surroundings unless it happened to be a moonless, cloudy night with which maybe his dark pack could cover him. But very quickly, the puppy made sure not to count on such luck. Carefully placing weight on each paw with practiced, immeasurable patience, the half-blind mute scoured the surrounding area to drink in whatever color his eyesight allowed him.

Indeed, it picked a strange quarry today. Near a cackling tree he spotted the strangest arrangement of colors: mainly grays and a little off-white . . . weird designs as well, on the darker patches he could spot. Adam peered over a bush that was taller than him, spying that the wolf also had the vaguest of purple shining through, and green too. The position of the wolf was towards the cackling tree, but why on earth this was so was beyond him.

Kale waited patiently - for what seemed like a rather long span of time for the raven to leave - when it finally did so the multi-colored wolf emerged from his place behind the bushes and paced beneath the mud ledge muttering to himself as he analysed his chances.

He had crouched down to prepare for a spring at the wall when a shift in the wind brought him the scent of another, momentarily belaying his interest in the Raven's nest Kale stood up and spun around to see who had nearly walked up on him while he had been otherwise occupied.

scanning the brush first at head height he nearly missed the patterned pup, only the contrast of his spotted tail caught his eye and caused the teen to swing his gaze lower. A pup!..and alone. That was rather curious in an of itself - but Kale had wandered off enough times in his own youth to over look it for the moment. And such a wildly patterned pup at that eh thought to himself - not that he had anything to talk about of course.

"Well hello there.." He greeted the pup "what are you doing out here all alone?"

Once spotted, Adam froze stock-still; as if his pelt could blend in with anything of the forest! But instinct was instinct, and took him a few moments to discern that this wolf wasn't out to hurt him . . . yet. Warily he tilted his head, black eyes staring the other down with some curiosity before shrugging in response, pointing his muzzle towards the cackling tree. With more time to read the surroundings, Adam began to spot that there were a few streaks of blue and purple in the mass of grays, and he tried to piece the information together . . . Caw-like sounds, he realized.

Oh. Well duh, a bird. Guess the tree wasn't magical after all . . .

But he wanted to get a closer look at the apparantly vividly-colored bird, so the pup stepped forth to join the other wolf - a teen maybe, if he guessed the tone-quality correctly. Adam continued to fix his gaze upon the preening creature above them, pondering how to get it down and looking rather eager to just try and climb the tree. The pup glanced at the other male for suggestions.

Kale tipped his head slightly as the pup froze - but then apparently decided that he wasn't in any danger, he was a rather strange beast though...most pups would have either scurried off at being discovered wandering alone - or bounced around yammering their entire life stories at him.

This one however remained quiet, but curious. "Not much of a talker are you" He remarked before glancing up to study the bird again as the pup joined him, motion from below regaining his attention and looking down he found the patterned pup staring up at him for guidance.

"Alright..well look here kid, we don't have claws like a cat to climb this tree now do we? And we certainly don't have wings either so we can't fly up there like the bird. Do you know what that means?" He paused but his question didn't seem to require an answer as Kale was eying the ledge again, a pup was far smaller then him and could probably maneuver the ledge easier then he could - and the lower weight would solve the whole branch breaking under him problem too. Of course Kale wasn't factoring in the fact that the pup was blind - ho could he? he didn't even know that yet.

"That means ' the multi colored wolf continued "that we have to be smarter, see that ledge up there? I can just boost you up and you can make your way from there to that wide branch there" And he pointed his muzzle at the wide branch "and then you can follow it along to get close to the Nest - now the big bird will probably fly away, but thats alright because the real treasure...is in the nest! See these types of birds they like to collect things, sometimes things from far off, so you game?" He asked the pup with a questioning look.

Branch . . . where? Adam narrowed his eyes in hopes that the shadows would not be so blurry, but no matter how hard he tried all he could make out was blue and purple streaks in the mesh of grays and blacks and sometimes greens. concentrating on the green more, however, he could vaguely make out how long each branch was; thickness? No . . . This would be very, very risky. Only how could he deny the other guy now?

So Adam nodded his head in response. He wondered what sort of shiny thigns a bird could possibly pick up. Hopefully, his sense of balance was good enough to keep him up there. Maybe higher up he could spy the shinies, and their color could help direct him?

Kale watched the pup for signs that he understood the plan, although he finally nodded his head - he still hadn't spoken a word and it had taken him an awfully long time to agree. From the puzzled way he had stared toward the trees Kale was't even sure he knew which branch he was supposed to be aiming for.

I have a bad feeling about this, Kale thought to himself as he furrowed his brow and studied the pup - he couldn't shake the feeling that there was something off about him, but lowering hi head slightly to peer thoughtfully at him didn't turn up any clues.

"right then, lets get this show started - I want to get this finished before common sense sets in" The teen joked slightly. "Now just go and stand over by the ledge and I'll try to boost you up"

It was a wonder to feel so observed and not be able to explain what he was pretty sure this guy was looking for. Adam was certain that if he showed that not only was he mute but also half-blind, the other wolf would be sure to expel him from this . . . research thingie. And the pup really wanted to try and have fun, considering his last encounter with some stinky guy had, both literally and metaphorically, left a bad taste in his mouth.

So Adam took a deep breath and hoped to God he found this ledge right. Did the guy mean right beneath the tree trunk or something? Oh God, oh God . . . Every careful step he took forward, the pup tried to ensure looked nothing less than purposeful and slow only in an effort to stay quiet. Startled birds could do mean things. One paw eventually touched the base of the tree, and Adam just stood there like he was meant to be in position, muscles tensed.

Kale watched the pup walk forward, he was bit off but the teen shrugged it off mentally - he was at least going in the right direction after all - and Kale really wanted to know what was in that nest. Padding up behind the pup he nudged him over a bit more. 'just a little to the left now..its lower over here" he told the little guy before grabbing him by the scruff and leaping up on his hind legs to try and thrust the pup onto the ledge.

"Scurry on up there!" he spoke out of the side of his mouth encouraging the pup to scramble up onto the ledge before Kale dropped him. It didn't seem to dawn on Kale that this pups mother - should she show up might find this situation somewhat less amusing and exciting as he did.

Scurry? What was "scurry" supposed to mean? Like step forward furiously and hope to God he made it up the tree and the branch somehow? Oh boy . . . Adam did the best that he could, but climbing a tree was terribly foreign to him: the bark wasn't right for his paws, and fighting gravity was just . . . wrong. Wrong, wrong, wrong. Yet here he was anyway, defying it! And probably doing it wrong too.

Just when he felt like gravity was just about to win, Adam saw the streak of purple and blue grow level with him, and without thinking he flung his little body towards it. Plop went his belly, miraculously, upon the branch where its nest was, and Adam hugged the branch like a lifeline. Wolves weren't meant to get so high up . . . ! He could hear the bird's chattering increase with irritation, and he flattened his ears with anxiety. How . . .but . . .? God. He began to sloooooooowly inch his way forward, hugging the branch still.

Kale shoved and pushed at the pups little body until somehow at long last he managed to find a hold and pull himself up onto the branch, huffing slightly Kale dropped back down to all four paws as the pup began to inch his way along.

"good! Good!" Kale encouraged him "slowly now..thats it your almost there!" he continued eyes gleaming with expectation as he paced about below the branch, he was still thinking there might be something a bit off with this pup...but had pushed such thoughts away in deference to his excitement at the moment.

"Now just keep going!" he continued 'Don't worry I'm right below you" He assured the pup - though what exactly he would do if the pup fell was beyond him - try to catch him he supposed. Maybe he ought t have built a safety mat of soft pine boughs or something - ah well...bit to late for that now!

Yeah, as if having something as soft as a teen right below him as a cushion helped his nerves. how he wished he could just bark at the dang bird so that it'd go away and he wouldn't have to worry about it! But he was sure God put this up as some sort of test of patience, and thus Adam took a deep breath and inched closer . . . closer . . . The bird's feather began to fluff up as it cawed threateningly, wings spread: more blue, more purple. He attempted to make a silent snarl, but what good was the use of a pup's try? C'mon, c'mon . . . Close enough, he tried to bat the bird away, but it seemed to only rile its temper further and -

OWOWOW. It was pecking at him with meticulous strokes, at his paws, his face, his neck! Adam had to cower back, but it continued onward with furious shrieks until, with one final bothersome prod that actually drew a drop of blood, the pup was forced off the branch and into the air, his grip loosened too much in the attempt to flee.

Kale watched with increasing concern as the pup went closer to the bird without actually scaring it off..why didn't he just bark at it or something? everyone knew birds hated loud noises like that.

"Now you might want to be..." kale started to warn the pup as the bird fluffed his feather..but his warning started to late and the bird was already shrieking and attacking the kid before kale could finish his sentence"...be careful" the end of which was drowned out by the birds mad cawing.

And then the pup as falling, by the full moon what was he supposed to do now? instinctively Kale leaped towards the falling pup in an attempt to catch him...but what would probably end up doing little more then breaking his fall.
PostPosted: Wed Sep 30, 2009 2:23 pm

And break his fall he would. Adam flopped off the teen's body with a silent grunt, face twitching with the dull pain as he landed side-up on the floor, paws sprawled. Above them the bird cackled loudly in its triumph, shouting about how no beast would touch its treasures so easily, let alone wolves. God, were all other creautres beside his species annoying? First he lynx, now this . . . Adam rolled over with a sigh, dark eyes flitting open to try and locate the other one, which thankfully was right beside him; no faulty vision could impair that at least. He prodded the body to see if it would move, because no-one coudl die from a pup falling on them, right? Unless he had to bite things to make them move, like that stinky guy from earlier . . . Well with that thought, this one probably would taste a whole lot better.

Kale let out a loud yelp as he missed catching the pup and ended up being his landing pad, the collision causing him to trip and fall to the floor knocking the breath out of him. Gasping kale lay there for a few moments until the pups prodding roused him to motion and blessed air once more swarmed into his lungs.

"Holy crescent moon!" he yelled flipping to his feet and nosing the pup "Are you alright little guy? I didn't really expect him to be that aggressive..totally my fault" Kale apologized as he noted the peck marks on the pups nose.

"maybe I should walk you home?" he suggested at a loss for how to deal with a possibly injured pup.
