***DISCLAIMER -- READ FIRST*** This thread was created because some people could not keep religion out of other threads. Feel free to discuss what you believe, and why you believe it, but DO NOT insult other members for their beliefs. You can question them in order to get a better understanding, but I don't want any hurt feelings. [And yes, the poll and first post are sarcastic.]

Now you can all talk about your stupid religions and how stupid they are and how stupid people are for believing in them without opening mini discussions about it in every other thread (unless that particular thread actually warrants the discussion in order to fully discuss the main topic of the thread.)

That's right! I'm being intolerant! Religion is stupid and illogical and all it really does is promote intolerance and control people by instilling fear in their hearts. Deal with it. Because this is the Chatterbox.

lol nice. You probably planned for it to sound hypocritical and you actually fooled me for a few seconds lawl

but onto my point. I personally believe that Christ is my savior. but unlike many others in my religion I'm not a Bible Thumper.

and to be honest not all religions promote intolerance. Buddhism Hinduism and as far as I know Wicca are peaceful. The latter is mainly because it's an unorganized religion and everyone worships the god and Goddess of their choice. and Christianity is SUPPOSED to be peaceful....but sometimes someone gets too overzealous and then we get the Witch Trials and the Inquisition

I try to be clever sometimes.

The problem with religion is that it really was invented to control people. The words 'cult' and 'religion' imply the same thing. Someone brainwashes you to believe in some magical god who created everything (or at least created part of everything, depending on what you believe) and that if you don't worship and/or listen to that god, you will be damned for eternity. With that kind of fear instilled, it's very easy to get people to behave. People who are good only because they're being bribed are not really good people. The whole thing is just ridiculous, and the fact that people whole heartedly believe in this boggles the mind.

Christianity wasn't really built on understanding or love. It was built on martyrdom. Think about the time when Paganism reigned and Christianity was just starting up. Do you think they just walked around, handed people a pamphlet, and said, "Yay, now you can go to Heaven! Just show up here and sing with us". I imagine it was more like what the Shiites are doing now:

"Believe us or we'll make you. We only have one boss and you can get some stature if you're a good Christian."

Kind of like a Mob-Boss-Terrorist thing. The cross was actually the symbol of a sword. why do you think a supposedly peaceful religion went on the Crusades to reclaim a land they never owned in the first place?

~~~~
I'm in the business of "whatever the hell I want" as far as religions go. I used to be an Existential Humanist, probably still am, but now I've got Paganism under that belt as well.
Couldn't have said it better myself. Although, add "Muslim and Judaism" to that because the three are pretty much the same religion. It's funny when people from the three groups fight over religion. It's like when my three selves fight each other.
*adds*
Hearing people from different branches of Christianity drives me nuts! I stopped going to my mom's church for even funerals because all they talk about is Jesus and HIS sacrifice when all I wanted to hear about was the person who actually LIVED his life in my time.
Plus, every person I manage to talk to who has a large deal of Old-School faith is preaching about building an army for a race to the finish line. It scares me and I want to smack both the Lutheran to whom I was speaking and the Catholic Bishop of Lincoln. A regular Faustus I'd be.
Wow. People where you live are disrespectful. And maybe a tad white supremacist? Build an army? 0_0 At funerals here people don't really talk. At least the only one I've ever been to. My family just kinda sits there and looks at each other or bows their heads. With crosses everywhere. I wonder what an atheist funeral would be like.
@Blinded: Yes, religion is something to laugh at. But that had nothing to do with the discussion. I create a thread about religion so you can stop spamming other threads about it, then what do you do but come in here and not talk about religion. I can't win. EVERYBODY JUST DISREGARD TOPICS AND POST WHATEVER YOU WANT IN ANY THREAD WOOOHOOOOOO FORGET ORDER AND ORGANIZATION AAHAHAHAHAH. Oh wait. No. In fact, do the opposite of that.
Yeah, the people here are scared of pretty much anything different. yay. I made fun of my parents once by saying, "Yay white power. . . " and they just nodded and agreed rather flamboyantly. . . That wasn't awkward at all. They hate Hitler, though that should kinda be a given if your grandfather fought in the war against Nazis. I have a feeling that if Nazis were put in a field to run, it'd be the Opener [Hunting Season] with no limits.
Build an army. Unquote. They also say that at Confirmation and First Holy Communion. The little 2nd graders have NO idea what to do in a room full of Catholics expecting to make them proud. What a buncha bull.
I imagine an atheist funeral would have less robes and more inspirational poetry. [Original response: more slideshows of funny drunks played to Crybaby by the Honey Sisters.]
I think I take it for granted that I live in pretty much the liberal capital of the country. Here we have all kinds of gay pride parades and the white supremacists got harassed to the point where I think they canceled some big meeting in Boston. I never followed up on that story. Add that to the fact that I live in a mostly asian/black neighborhood, and all of my family is sooper christian (except my muslim aunt). I'm pretty tolerant.
But this army thing freaks me out. What the hell? I believe you and that scares me.
I wish I lived somewhere a little more relaxed. I'd love to go to a Gay Pride Parade. Right now I live in a place where it's okay to be racist so long as you're in the majority, and people look down at you for working where you do, Despite their patronizing of your store??? "I'm richer and smarter than you, which is why I'm buying. . . this candy bar. . . here. . . where you work. . . " *that's my new dream*
Yeah, that's the message I keep hearing from some of the Catholics/Lutherans here. My mom's head of the Parish Council of Catholic Women [PCCW] but she doesn't take that stance, at least she doesn't mean to when she does. Doesn't excuse her and her council members from using the term "Indian" when talking about clothing drives. -_-;;; Mother Teresa was right about poor countries.
For the most part it's good here. Racism is hidden (except all the "gangstas" who call each other "*****") where it exists. The only things people don't really agree on is stuff like abortion (oh noez gawd sed itz rong) and some gay rights. Like the other day my boyfriend said he agrees with his parents that gay people shouldn't be able to adopt. I calmly told him I'd rather two working, caring people like my old chorus teacher and his husband have a child than two people like my parents (father was in jail, now in nursing home, mother leeches off "disability"). When I put it that way, he started to see that love and financial status are more important than gender when it comes to raising kids.
The one thing people here are very tender about is muslims. Because of all the war propoganda everyone thinks all muslims are terrorists. My aunt wears a hijab (sp) and after the 9/11 thing, she had to stop wearing it because people were getting shot for stuff like that. Her husband was afraid to go to work. Sickening.
Actually, what's hilariously funny to me isn't religion, but rather the extremely myopic views here of what faith is. They're two different things, but the discussion quite plainly misses that (note the preponderance of attacks against the belief systems rather than the organized churches).
What I see INSTEAD is bitter people ranting and raving about something they only have casual exposure to. The sad reality is that most laity, regardless of faith, don't really take the tenets of their faith seriously, and the people who always get the most attention are the worst abusers. You've made the fairly normal mistake of misdirecting your anger at the faith instead of the people.
So, no, I'm not laughing at religion. I'm laughing at YOU. And the joke is STILL funny. rofl
By the way:
You have deeply offended my God, and my God is a God of vengeance and horror! And action! My God is an Indian who turns into a wolf.
What is this, Inuyasha?
The faiths are just as bad as the people. I read and studied the bible (both testaments), and I can say that the Christian religion is bullshit, contradictory, and bullshit. There's nothing bitter about it. And anyway, as I said before, the entire concept of some all powerful god is ridiculous. Even more when it's an all loving god that will send you to be tortured at the blink of an eye. You're the joke here. Oh yeah, and remember that personal attacks aren't allowed. Strike 1.
