Chapter 1: 1st Division Returns

Backstory

Five years ago, 1st Division were assigned by Central 46 to take command of a secret installation on earth, which was being used to develop Shinigami abilities by the Kidou Core.

It was a complete failure and instead the institute was taken over by hollow, although the 1st Division managed to retake the institute many of the important documents and research samples were destroyed or taken.

Although it was deemed a failure by Central 46 it is still the priority to retrieve any articles.

Description

This chapter is about the return of the members of the 1st Division to Seireitei, the Court of Pure souls and recovering from the extensive losses that 1st Division incurred.

Yu stepped through the spirit gate into what appeared to be the slums of Seireitei known mainly as Rukongai and as he held Iss Hogai he was somewhat surprised that he hadn't landed somewhat closer. After all, the division commander usually had its perks. The wind swept through his hair as he stood there, looking around.

District 80...Zaraki, it was the one place many officers didn't want to come to and unfortunately he was neither in uniform, nor was he releasing any spiritual pressure, so standing there, with his zanpakuto in the middle of Zaraki was an open invitation.

A hand caught onto his shoulder as a ruffian leaned on him. Now usually spirits didn't have much power, spiritual or not, but these rules didn't seem to apply in Zaraki everyone seemed to have some spiritual power here.

"Eeeeh...we don' see y'kind 'round here tha' much." The man slurred as the noise blanketed the area as the souls wandered back onto the streets.

"I'm from out of town."

"'can see tha'." The man continued, "s'why you're wearin' such good clothin' init." This was going to end badly as he could see numerous spirits gathering around. If you paid attention you could hear the sound of metal clashing wood tapping in hands. A glint in the corner of his eyes, these guys had knives, "'ave any money on ya?"

"None, but that's going to stop this is it?" Yu's eyes shifted towards the ruffian whom was leaning on his left arm. Letting go of Iss Hogai, the young man dropped and seemed to spin on his left heel catching hold of ruffians shirt. Already Yu had lost his balance, falling backwards with ruffian he tumbled and threw the ruffian into the crowd. At that point weapons became quickly visible and he rolled forwards picking up his Zanpakuto in his left hand and came quickly to a standing position. Now with his spiritual power sealed as it was, he was currently not likely to win this match unless he had help.

As the commander had ordered, the division had to split up in order for the spirit
gates to be able to transport the entire 1st. Coming out of the gate, she held her
Zanpakuto in the simplest of fashions, ready to engage any opponent.

She stood there, surrounded by trees, her blue hair stuck out like a sore thumb
amongst the green shrubbery and her black Shinigami uniform didn't help
matters. Breathing in deeply, her eyes sought out movement, but there wasn't
any, she had come through the Spirit gate with several others, but they were
nowhere to be seen. Perhaps they had managed to get closer to Seireitei for
at the moment she had no idea where she was.

Relaxing slightly was the first mistake she made that morning as an arrow
struck her right shoulder from behind, she dropped to the floor, not in agony,
although that was aspect of why she dropped rather than spun around, but she
liked to meet her opponents head on. Snapping the Arrow in half she discarded
the waist and rolled through the shrubbery using her right shoulder rather than
her usual left.

There was sudden movement, hurried even, in the shrubbery before a number of
bandits emerged from their cover. Not one of them bore a shinigami uniform,
but each of them appeared to be part of a hunting party.

"Coulda' swore I hit somethin'." The one with the bow mentioned looking around
for his arrow, but another was more interested in the blood.

"We know you hit it, there's a reason why Shinigami have such a high bounty on
their heads y'know." Quellu watched from behind a bush, that man had a scar
just above his right eye, and was somewhat well equipped for a bandit. What was
the situation and more importantly where was she? Back when she was still back
in the academy it was rumoured that Shinigami caught alone in some of the
outer districts were captured and tortured for their secrets, usually only the
weaker ones though; it wasn't even supposed to be organized. This wasn't spur
of the moment, this was active hunting.

Rolling backwards and up onto her feet, Quellu turned and started running in the
opposite direction. Of course, she could have confronted them and gained
information but she was at a disadvantage, after being struck by that arrow her
left arm was weakened and that in turn meant her control would be off by just
a little, hardly battle ready. Although each step took its toll she wasn't without her
discipline as she finally came to a small looking village. A well on the outside
allowed her to cleanse her wounds and give her the time to get that arrow out.
On the other hand, someone should have at least noticed her.

Why hadn't they; she hadn't yet needed to hide either. Her ears caught the
noise from further in town, it wasn't the usual bustling of a busy village, but rather
angry shouts, small jeers and the rising stench of testosterone was enough to
interest her. Skipping up onto the roof of a nearby building she came almost
immediately on a large crowd, an unusually large crowd, mostly made up of men
in their late twenties armed with weapons.

That was when she figured out where she was. Zaraki. The district renowned for its
bandits, the lowest point of Seireitei, or so they were taught. Looking into the
crowd she saw a sight she thought she'd never ever see. The 1st Division captain
without his Lieutenant by his side. It was common knowledge he sealed his strength
forcefully with high level kidou to prevent hollow from being attracted to him.
Unfortunately, as a mere konpaku not only was he defenceless but he was also in a
dire situation.

The first thing the young lady did was look around. No one had noticed her meaning
she had the element of surprise, that didn't mean she had the advantage either.
Her history with the 1st hadn't been an easy history but she had always been taught
by the 13th to respect her research and make sure you had a decent plan before
running into battle.

The atmosphere was becoming tense as the moments passed, gentle scuffling could be heard as the crowd grew uneasy with the current situation, no one was moving but if anyone did move things would suddenly become a lot more heated.

"How long are you going to wait?" The commander spoke trying to sense the low level konpaku around him. This was particularly tricky as the way to track konpaku was to imprint them with some of your own information, the only division that had any major success was the 12th Division, they'd perfected the art of tracking souls. There was a sudden scuffle behind him, coming towards him, he'd fallen for the bait. Flicking the blade out of its sheath with his index finger, Yu spun twisted on his heels. Iss Hogai caught the opponents mace dead on and held the mace in mid air. It couldn't slice through. The small mace however was taking up both of the ruffians hands and Yu sought out the eyes his assailant. A soft brown but hungry for a fight. A little too hungry, bringing up his left leg and weakening his stance slightly he drew himself closer and the thrust his foot down on the inner thigh of the man pushing him to the ground by manipulating his own bone structure.

The man fell easily still gripping to the mace and then the crowd started moving in.

"Tch.." Yu narrowed his eyes, they weren't slow that was for sure as he pushed forwards raising his zanpakuto to strike at another in front of him before having to spin around and guard from a horizontal strike. For a moment it felt like he was back at the academy, sparing with other students trying to simulate a battle experience.

"Get 'im!" Someone in the crowd roared and blades started to get awfully close to his head in only a split moment. Crowds were hard to deal especially when their power equalled your own. Experience was now the only thing keeping him alive, the way his body just moved on its own, the muscles reacting to instinct rather than his concentration. A blade cut into his back slicing open his uniform, but he didn't care about that, he had factored in mistakes, the pain, the loss of blood for his strategy. As long as he kept his focus, there was a slither of a chance he could get out of this fight alive. A few moments later and he had his vengeance, punching the assailant full in the face. The bandit flew backwards clearing out a few meters worth of space.

A few meters however was more than enough and he rushed into the surprised crowd to gain the advantage and get out of the way of those that weren't surprised, he cut through a number of them, but the numbers just kept on coming. Life used to be so much simpler...

Looking around had given her some information. Not only was everyone
intent on the small skirmish in the middle, but various buildings had been
left unattended. Glancing back towards the centre of the crowd Quellu
narrowed her eyes. Usually the commander would just stride through
konpaku without taking any notice of them, yet now, his display of
power was much below her own.

Was this intentional to lure them...a whole crowd into a false sense of
insecurity? That doubt went, when she saw the back of his uniform
neatly cut open, blood flowing from a thin, accurate wound. Enough
research, she had to figure out how to get the Commander out of the
current situation he found himself in.

If she barged straight in and fought, there was a chance she could be
overwhelmed and there was no certainty she would win. An officer in the
division, seated or not, meant very little in Zaraki unless you were a high
ranking seated officer, or a member of the 11th. Tapping her finger on
the hilt of her ninja-to, she decided on a less direct approach and slid
back behind the buildings and jumped from the roof.

There were many useful things to use in Seireitei no matter where you
came from or went and dead or alive your soul could be destroyed if
enough pressure is exerted. On the other hand, killing people would only
provoke the situation. Still, she grabbed a keg of ale from an untended
cart and drenched the entrances, all but one in the ale, followed by bales
of anything dry.

Grabbing a thick brown sheet from a nearby clothes line she waited for
the opportune time. The commander would have to keep himself alive for
the time being because it was a fact she knew that if she interfered in the
wrong way at the wrong time, this plan could and more than likely would
backfire.

The crowd had begun to adapt already and they were beginning to move closer. It was happening a little faster than anticipated and still manageable thankfully. In one swift move he sheathed Iss-Hogai in the same stance that he would normally draw it, it was the bait he needed to draw the next bandit in.

A dagger dropped down from over his head, a fist clasped around it. It was a simple movement hoping to get him in the back of the neck no doubt, but Yu had anticipated this. Flicking his right hand up he snapped his fist against the bandit's wrist. The dagger flew into the air just as Yu stamped in with his left foot, breathing out as he snapped his left hook into the Bandit's stomach. The bandit stumbled back giving him the extra room to finish this off.

Stepping to the bandits left with his right foot he drew himself up and then stamped forwards again with his right leg this time, just behind his calf, his knee in the back of the bandits left knee, his arms seemed to move of their own accord, as his hand met with the bandit's neck. Thrusting him over and out of the fight as far as Yu was concerned. Shifting his weight Yu fell to his left rolling into the gap he'd created catching the falling dagger as he came to his feet in his right hand. Hiding it behind his back even though all the crowd could see he dropped his stance again, as someone nicked his neck with a thin blade.

Twice he'd been caught out now, but he had a smaller weapon now, easier to handle in close combat. Yu focused forwards and stepped forwards with his right again deftly catching another downward swing with his dagger in a horizontal position, the movement didn't end there as he swept the blade off to the side and plunged his dagger into the stomach of another assailant who was coming at him from behind with another downward strike. The blade fell in front of him as Yu twisted the blade before pulling the dagger out, throwing it towards the person who had caught his neck. The bandit deftly knocked the dagger away after being subject to similar attacks for many years.

This however was just the movement he needed in which to find the opening and Yu again stepped forwards into bandit's range and simply placed his hands on the bandits chest. Yu breathed in and exhaled and in the moment of a second the assailant had lost his balance, Yu took this and twisted his body to the left using the acquired space to build up the momentum for an elbow strike. The sternum and a number of ribs cracked as the bandit fell into his comrades.

That was the end of Yu's succession of attacks as a mace bludgeoned his back sending him flying over his prize. Tapping into his power was a long process, but he'd have to hurry it up if he wanted to stay alive.

Turning from bad to worse, the situation was only now leaning in her favour.
Unfortunately that meant letting the commander get hurt a little more. The
way he moved though, even without reiatsu his speed was incredible.
Wrapping the sheet around herself and over her head she paused for a little
longer.

If anyone caught her doing this she'd be dead faster than she could call for
help. Raising her right hand she placed her left hand on her right biceps. If
this didn't work, she was going to run out of options.

"Ye lord!" Quellu started speaking softly so as not to alert the crowd, "Mask
of blood and flesh, all creation, flutter of wings, ye who bears the name of
Man! Inferno and pandemonium, the sea barrier surges, march on to the
south! Shakkahō" The red orb formed on her right palm before shooting off
above the crowd. Thankfully it had worked, but that wasn't the end of what
she needed to do.

"Byakurai..." she muttered somewhat loudly as the red orb exploded above
the crowd. The spark of lightning flipped from her ringer to a small puddle
on the floor. Flames sprang fourth and shot along the trail of liquid heading
straight for the bales of straw she had laid out so carefully to encourage the
fire.

Everything went off in clockwork fashion and she knew in a few moments
she'd be drawing the attention of everyone there as she walked forwards
along the corridor she had designed for herself. There was a specific
reason she had chosen this corridor and this angle but everything had it's
time and she would have to carry them out to the letter.

Raising her spiritual pressure she let out her command, "Halt!" The sound
carried with a little more potency causing her smile under her darkened
hood.

Somewhat surprised, Yu swept his foot around, bringing his body under a horizontal slash from some arm length weapon or other, he'd lost count of how many different types of weapons he'd seen, but what he did know, was that he was seeing a level of kidou that only seated officers were able to pull off with such finesse, thus, keeping his body low to the floor, while the other ruffians were dazed, he made a relative escape concealing his presence.

He knew once the sudden shock wore off he'd be spotted and dragged back into the fight, but he had to disappear before anyone else noticed. Unfortunately, his escape route was barred by a wall of fire. Surely the shinigami was aware of the situation? That a captain level shinigami was inside the...trap.

Unable to summon up the strength to get rid of the fire, he turned to face the crowd who were slowly coming out of their fazed stupor, Iss Hogai resonated in his right hand. Truth be told, he didn't really want to fight, especially not against essentially powerless konpaku like themselves. Yet, there was nothing he could do and if he wanted to stay alive he'd have to resign himself to his fate.

((Mmm, I hope someone will join me soon >< I have no idea what's going on with Yu and Quellu so I'ma just do my own thing))

Maaika blinked a couple of times to adjust her eyes from the darkness of the spirit gate to the natural sunlight. Her pale blue eyes darted quickly, observing her surroundings. A clearing inside a forest. She let her eyes close slowly as a breeze ruffled through her long blonde hair and relaxed. The air around Rukongai was always the best. With her eyes still shut, she read the air pattern around her, collecting a mental image of her surroundings. District 80.

An arrow flew her way, scraping her arm as she turned around. Rough laughing was heard before the men stepped through the woods and into the clearing.
"Heeey, shinigami. We d'n't know that 'er pertty lady like yerself would be one of 'em." The biggest of the three men said loudly.
"Ya, we gun' take good care o' yah, won't we, fellas?"
"We'll treatcha real good if ya come with us quietly. I'll e'en talk to der boss 'bout lettin' us gettn' first crack after bein' done w'itchu." The biggest continued, slowly stepping towards her with the other two close behind, weapons in hand.

Maaika glanced down at her shinigami robe and her zanpakuto that so stuck out obviously. There was no way she could keep a low profile in Zaraki dressed like this. Returning her gaze on the three men who were only a few feet away from her, she decided. Immediately, the hunters (what she considered them to be) grabbed her roughly, one on each arm, pinning them back.
"D'ere. Dat weren't so bad now was i--"
A hard kick was delivered to the face of the one in front of her while one holding her arms received an elbow to the stomach. Taken off guard, she wrestled her arm out of his grip and turned, knocking out the last one with a blow. Bad idea. As the man fell to the ground, her arm fell to her side as pain shot up her arm. Grimacing, she cradled her arm. The three were all on the ground at this time; their talk was worse than what they could actually do.
"Sorry." She muttered to them before kneeling down to the man clutching his stomach in pain. His face distorted in horror and then anger at the sight of her kneeling beside him. She delivered a quick blow to a point behind his neck and repeated another apology as the man fell limp. Quickly, she stripped him of most of his clothing, earning crazed stares from the other two who were either on the ground or staggering on their feet. Rolling her eyes, she delivered the same blow to the two of them, rendering them unconscious as well. Slipping out of her shinigami uniform, she quickly put on the clothes that she had just required. He closer to her size than the other two were anyways. Though still a bit big, it gave her the room to cover her zanpakuto, making it look less suspicious. She piled her long hair under the hat that one of them wore. The hat was large on her but proved convenient by hiding the long tresses of her hair and her eyes.

Pleased with her idea, she once again closed her eyes. The wind soon picked up a scent. A scent that she'd recognize anywhere. People. Villages. Blood. And the blood of her captain.

Suddenly the shinigami found herself almost entirely powerless,
not because she was powerless but because she had almost
waited too long before she carried on. Half the crowd were
staring at her unaware of their situation and she had to keep it
that way.

Her zanpakuto was now not only drawn, not only in it's shikai form but a bright flash was emitted as the Bankai began to form.

"Forsetti, the defendants are charged with the crime of attacking a powerless individual. How do you find them."

As the light almost blinded everyone, the only thing that could
be heard was a booming voice.

"I Forsetti find the defendants guilty."

The young girl smiled as the spear shone brightly and in the next moment disappeared.

Only a moment later she was stood with her Zanpakuto being sheathed. The ruffians, all of them, fell to the ground.

Yu looked up coming to his feet and dusting himself off, "I wondered when you would show. 13th Division L'Piu Quellu. I thank you." He stepped forwards and checked the bandits, most of them were still alive.

Glancing up he noticed a young spiritual power, "You're a bit late aren't you." Though he also sensed another power in the area, "Interesting, Quellu, we're moving out."

With enough damage that the first place he wanted to head to was the division Dojo he instead headed towards another female scent. Another young officer in his division.
