Meeting Sei had left Hoshi thoughtful, and it was something that remained throughout the next few days. He saw little enough of his housemates what with Mireille closeting herself away to work on her next novel and Ruokei leaving every morning to wander around with Sailien, but that was fine with Hoshi. He'd spent his own days as he was spending this very day - wandering around Gaian streets in a bid to refamiliarize himself with a place he'd called home not so very long ago.

Sometimes, he stopped at shops, looking at the goods through the windows, and occasionally ducking in for a small bit of food or a trinket. He'd figured on giving Sei a week or so to get used to the idea of his father being back before Hoshi pushed for more. But in the interim, there was little else to focus on, save hazy part-memories of Before. However, when his eye caught sight of a dark-haired woman that seemed somehow vaguely familiar. He paused in his tracks, considering for a moment before lifting a hand in greeting. "Hello," he said, not really certain if he even knew the woman, but after everything that had passed, willing to take the chance.

Keir's expression remained blank. She blinked, and appeared almost confused, showing no indication in the way her face sat of recognizing him, or even acknowledging him as a Fa'e. It had been a long time since she'd mingled with her own kind.

Keene trailed at her feet. The feline companion looked scruffy, but was composed and poised almost defensively aside Keir.
The Fa'e spoke hesitantly, with minimal confidence. There was a degree of uncertainty in her tone. "Can... I.. uh, help you?" It appeared a struggle to even produce a response. She maintained no eye contact.

Is he not Fa'e? Keene eyed Keir thoughtfully. I have my suspicions. I mean.. Look at the--

"I don't know." She interrupted in an uncaring fashion. "Would you mind your own damn business?" Her unwillingness to maintain a conversation was apparent.

Hoshi started to open his mouth, then blinked as she shifted from dispassionate politeness to uncaring rude words. "Ah...," he said after a moment, frowning a little as he considered her. She still felt familiar to him vaguely, and determined not to be offset by the rather confusing way her attitude had shifted, he gathered his composure. "This may seem like an unusual question," he said after a moment. "But... do we know each other? You seem familiar, and I'm afraid I don't remember everyone I once knew." Hopefully, the candid words would put her at least somewhat at ease.

That had interested her. Maybe they did once know of each other. Keir had once known of plenty of people, but her ability to interact with them had been severely crippled by her inability to be socially active (or just be plain nice).
"Why don't you remember them?" She inquired. Maybe he had hit his head, she thought. Maybe she had hit his head. The following thought prompted a stifled giggle. Keir was indeed sociable.

Oh dear. Keene swirled around her impatiently. Looking dehydrated the cat's stomach imploded with every breath he drew, and his eyes squinted in reaction to the pain.

"What's wrong with you now?" The Fa'e snivelled, partially ignoring him in favour of Hoshi. "Be quiet!" She rised against his loud gasps.

Thanks pal! Keene wheezed back.

Hoshi, on the other hand, looked a little alarmed at the loud breaths the cat was taking. He bent down on one knee to examine Keene a bit more carefully even as he sought out an answer for Keir. "I was... away, for a long time," he explained, holding up dark blue fingers for Keene to sniff, so that Keene might decide he was friendly enough. "While I was gone, things happened, and when I returned, many of my memories had faded. I'm afraid that whatever happened also faded into that haze," he added, frowning down at Keene. "Your cat doesn't look very healthy. Do you know what's wrong with him?"

"You want to know what's wrong with him huh? He uh... complains too much!" Keir retorted, staring angrily at her companion as he gained all the attention. Keene lapped it up meanwhile, affectionately licking Hoshi's fingers before rubbing up against him. He knew it would wind the troubled Fa'e up.

"What a total suck up. Idiot."
Jealous are we? Keene winked slyly.

Keir of course, was not jealous in the slightest. "No!" She insisted, trying to gain Hoshi's interest once more through the stress of her tone. "I've been gone too!" She admitted. Maybe that would be an interesting enough point to detract him.

Oblivious to just what was irritating Keir so much, Hoshi continued to pet Keene even as he looked up at her. "Then... perhaps we're in the same boat," he suggested. "Your pet looks like he needs something to eat, and it's getting on toward lunch," he added after a moment, doing a quick mental calculation of the spending money that Mireille had freely handed Hoshi. He'd have to find a job soon, he knew, but she'd stressed that his first task was to get to know where he was again. "Why don't we eat somewhere, and you can tell me where you went, if you remember? And we can get him some food and water, as well."

"You tell me first!" Keir insisted.

Didn't you just hear?! Keene interrupted, free lunch Keir! ....And who said "there's no such thing as a free lunch"? The cat seemed delighted at the prospect but the Fa'e remained defensive. She wasn't prepared to open up to some stranger, a stranger she hadn't even yet considered Fa'e.

Dragging frail fingers through her dry and unkempt head full of black hair, she indicated her nervousness.

"I'm not sure!"
WHAT?! Keene flippantly interjected.

Delighting in seeing Keene worked up - she began to relax. "Erm... as long as you're paying?"

This whole conversation hovered somewhere between baffling and uncomfortable for Hoshi, but he rallied gamely, rising and nodding. "I'll tell you what I can, certainly," he tried, offering a look that he hoped would be interpreted as sympathetic. In truth, he didn't really know what to think of it all. "And you're welcome to tell me only as much as you feel comfortable with. I don't mean to pry."

Keene led the charge. His ambition of curing his hunger driving him ahead around the block. Keir followed reluctantly looking at Hoshi with wide, frightened eyes which flickered gold. She was uneasy being in his company alone as she relied so much on Keene. It was only now she began to realise this as finding things to say became difficult.

"You're... other than human?" She blurted, disconnecting herself from Hoshi by increasing the gap between them. Her anxiety heightened as she covered her eyes with her bangs.

Adjusting her top as she twitched under his observation, she revealed a faint yellow star on her left shoulder.

It represented the past. Something she was now unsure of. But it also represented hope. Hope that things would get better. Hope that things would go back to the start.

Hoshi nodded, not liking the fear he saw in her eyes, and wishing he could do something about it. "I'm not," he agreed quietly. "I am Fa'e, that much I know. My name is Hoshi," he added, remembering belatedly that he hadn't introduced himself. He'd just assumed that if she felt so comfortable with him, then likely she would know his name. But that was clearly not the case. "And... you are?" he asked, his voice a touch leading as he hoped to coax a name from her.

"My name is Keir." She said clearly "And my friend there is Keene. It means wise." The added unnecessary information perhaps out of heightened nervousness.

"Jesus." Keir tilted her head toward Hoshi, analyzing him. "You are familar. You're a Fa'e. You're a Fa'e!" Her nervous nature dissipated and she became almost excited. She revealed her shoulder to him proudly.

"Hoshi's star! That's what I was always told," her excitement became reflected through her eyes. It was good news. Comforting. She felt relaxed in his presence finally.

At her sudden excitement, Hoshi found himself smiling. "Hoshi's star, hmm?" he asked, looking down at the faint mark on her shoulder. One hand lifted, the dark blue, star-speckled fingers stopping short of actually touching as they hovered over the area. "I wish I could remember," he said apologetically. "But at least now we know why you seem familiar?" That thought buoyed him as he pointed out a small outdoor cafe along the street. "Will that work? Perhaps they'll bring Keene a bowl of water and some... meat?" he added, looking curiously at the cat. In Gaia, it was anyone's guess what any given animal might eat.

For the first time in a while, genuine hope came to Keir. Genuine hope that she could turn her life around and genuine hope that she could regain all she had lost. It seemed ambitious to her at first. Almost as ambitious as it appeared Hoshi recovering his memory would be. But she was determined at least. Hoshi's star would guide her.

Beaming, she nodded as they entered the outdoor cafe and took their seats. Keene sat below the table in the shade quietly. The sun had apparently exhausted him.

"You don't remember why you gave me this? ... Do you know my fate? Does anyone still remember me?" Overwhelming him with questions, she indicated her loneliness, her weakness. It was rarely seen but it came spilling out. The star had been with her for some time. It had seen a lot. She felt secure in telling the person who had gifted her it.

Would Hoshi see anything in her though? Or her future? "Are you some prophet?"

Blinking and awkward at the sudden influx of questions, Hoshi waved one hand. "I'm no prophet, Keir," he said firmly. "But... I'm also not a good example to judge on. I'm sure people remember you - friends and family you've been close to. Parents, perhaps?" he added, then blinked as he remembered the relationship that had drawn him back to Gaia. "...Or children?" he added gently.
