If anyone is familiar with anything in the international athletic world, maybe you've heard of this girl. Caster Semenya from South Africa. She had been breaking records in the 800 meter dash recently, and her masculine physique and voice have caused a controversy.
This past August, while she was running in the World Championship in Athletics, tests were conducted to determine if she was male or female. Depending on the result, they would deem her unfit to compete in ANY athletic event, because she would have unfair advantage over her peers.
The tests came back confirming that Semenya (who is only 1 yr older than my sister Julia) is biologically a hermaphrodite. Supposedly she doesn't have a womb or ovaries (but everything else female) and internal testes. The presence of these male organs grants her three times the amount of testosterone any female should have--and a physiological advantage over her female opponents.
Now they are trying to decide if they should strip her of her awards and bar her from ever competing again. Which I think is entirely unfair. Hell, let her run with the guys, if they think her biological gender is so important.
I think that this is entirely unfair. She is now being singled out because she isn't male or female. She was raised female her entire life. She hasn't public show any attraction to the same sex that can be blamed on her lack of a proper gender as far as I can tell. taking something she enjoys away from her isn't right by any means. I mean can't they give the other runners a head start or something? I've seen it done in the Olympics.
FAIR TREATMENT FOR THE INTERSEXED! scream

PS: If you have seen this somewhere else, yes I'm spreading it around. I think I have a decent reason, since it's not all in one place.

Alright. My opinions are completely different from what I'm about to say:
People who are intersex are not legally able to do anything about discrimination. There have been laws passed that protect homosexuals from discrimination in the workplace and with housing and so forth, however, there are no laws protecting people who are intersex. Therefore, technically, they have every right to kick her out.
That being said, I believe it is totally wrong and it is a huge problem with the system. Most people who are transsexual, intersex, genderqueer, ect. Have no way of helping that. Intersex is a condition that you are born with, just like having black or white skin. I have a good friend that is gender queer, but my friend calls themselves a lesbian for work. They were born into a female body, bu never really felt like a male or a female. It's a very difficult subject, but no matter what anyone says, it isn't illegal for them to ban this woman from sports.

The facts you say Chocolate suck big time, while sadly are true.
I guess it's because its not so much a common issue that people come across everyday.
But if she was raised female, "thinks" female, in all essence (apart from the male bits) is female then she is female. Thats what I think anyway.

that's ridiculous. they shouldn't take away trophies because since she's both genders, then the fact that she's part woman means that she's women enough to compete.
haha, that barely makes sense. no, but if she didn't know about this, then she shouldn't be punished! and they should allow her to compete in the men's competition if she wants to pursue a career in track. this isn't right. i hope it all works out for her.
man, lady gaga's a hermaphrodite, and no one hates on her!

I see that on the news every day. I think it does not matter if she was born with both male and female parts, it is not her fault. Also if she was raised a girl, and believes she is a girl, she represents herself like a lady, then who is anybody else to call her anything but.
I think people are just trying to be unfair and strip her of everything she has worked so hard for, all because she is different. I mean, get over. You suck at track, and she doesn't . Leave her alone, whats between her legs, is none of nobodys business and I think its such a horrible act to subject her to such a public test. I mean, I would be horrified if I was subjected to worldwide attention just to determine my gender. Its nobody's business, but my own. I would sue their a** off. Then I would me known as the Filthy Stinkin Rich Hermaohrodite and then they can all suck it,,, or eat it. Whatever.

I think I have a decent reason, since it's not all in one place. There should be specific rules that determine eligibility for althetic events. The committee itself is trying to be as fair as possible, but public reaction has been pretty digusting. The way I see it, Semenya has a big genetic advantage over her competition, because of her testosterone levels. If any other competitor were to enhance their testosterone levels to that of Semenya, then they would be barred from competing. I don't see it as an issue of "FAIR TREATMENT FOR THE INTERSEXED!", it's more of equal opportunities for everyone. One member of the committee, I had read, said regardless of what happens to Semenya, her running career is still going forward, and she will still be able to compete.

i think the worst part of this whole thing is how the media have handled it. Bad enough this girl could be stripped of her medals and forbidden to compete, she's having her business splashed all over the world and everyone's judgement from every country aimed at her, just because the western world has become so paranoid about cheating! It's nobodies business, and by shouting it from the rooftops we've basically just stripped the poor thing of any of her dignity.
Makes me sick.

In a way I understand the unfair advantage she has over other women, but they shouldn't take away past awards!!! Like everyone else said, let her run with the men! She's obviously ok with it and loves herself so why can't everyone be happy for her? Is it too impossible to imagine that she may be a good runner because she actually works for it?!
