I'm thinking about purchasing a tablet but I really don't know what to look for in one. It seems Wacom is the best, but some of their tablets are a bit pricey.
What brands are good? And what size should I get?

I heard Bamboo's are pretty good (and pretty reasonable price), and don't get a Cintiq(sp?) 'cause I heard the colour on the screen will probably be ruined in about a year (Let alone the PRICE, HA, don'tthinkaboutitD wink

But if you're not using one professionally, any is fine, really. I have the standard Wacom and it works fine. It was about $110 when I bought it 3-4 years ago, I don't know how much it'd be now.

I favor Intuos myself, but I heard the Graphires and Bamboos are pretty decent, too.

I have a ...6/8? (Not sure, it's the second smallest xD;; ) and I think it's pretty good, so I'd recommend something around there.

When I got Kira her first tablet, it was a 6x8 and i got it on ebay for like $130 but I got her a new one that's an 8x11 for $140 from Best Buy. So I took her old tablet. So if you get anything from a 6x8 or lower it should be about $40 - $90 depending on the brand. Kira and I got Jade a tablet for her bday that ranged in that price (sorry I can't say the price since it was a gift and i don't want her to know)

I have a range now though. xD *will get you two back for that, but for now still gives massive huggles*

Yea, Kira and D got me a Bamboo, and I love it. Need to get to using it more, but its the perfect size at 6x8. Plus you can use it to replace your mouse if you wanted to.

I'm not a huge fan of the bamboo personally. If i were you, i'd take a look at refurbished tablets on the Wacom site. They're MUCH cheaper.
I have had my intuos3 for about 5 years. You can get replacement parts for the pen and tablet itself (which is what i just did earlier this month) and it's most definitely gone down in price. I'd look at the Intuos 3 over the Intuos 4 specifically for 2 reasons

look at the prices, especially refurbished ones.
I prefer the screen on the intuos 3. It's not rough like the Inutos4 or bamboo, making it much easier to draw on.

take a look, it'll be your best bet for a decent tablet i think
