Has anyone read this book? I know we're all LOTR fans here, but surprisingly many fans of LOTR haven't read this book.. so just wondering. You can discuss the book here, and talk about what you liked / didn't like about this book.

I personally liked this book A LOT. It helps explain a lot of things, and basically tells you how things got to be how they are in the main series of LOTR. Also, the elves are friggin awesome! mrgreen

Yea, I've read it. I loved it too, probably because I love history and that is exactly what it is.

This book is sooo good. Yet if you look back at it, and reflect about the story as a whole... it's actually quite tragic as well. Those poor elves.... I think the Valar should have helped them, afterall... they had a common enemy! How could they just let the Elves die like that? crying

Simple: The Valar are brainless idiots.

I particularly like them claiming that they would neither help nor hinder the Noldor from leaving Aman, but simply by giving them no way to get out hindered them. But then again I'm an unrepentant (eldest) Sons of Feanor fangirl. sweatdrop

And I'm hoping that everyone who's read the Silmarillion realises it's tragic. xd

I agree, this book is very tragic when you look back on it. And I don't think the Valar are brainless, just meanie poopoo heads xd

Maybe the Valar were testing the Elves to see if they were all that they were supposed to be...? And I guess the results were not exactly as they were projected...?

I've read bits and pieces of the Simarillion (the entire part about the Valar, Maiar, etc, Numenor, and the Fall of Gondolin), but seeing that my attention span is rapidly decreasing, I may not be able to complete it ^^;

I personally found the whole idea of the Valar to be very interesting, and greatly enjoyed reading that part. As majestic and powerful as they seem, they still have some human qualities. They remind me of the Greek gods, but at the same time seem childlike and innocent.

That's a very good point. The Valar though are more elven in nature, especially considering that when the Firstborn appeared they took the shape of the Firstborns. And humans do act differently from elves, so just wanted to state that. And I guess the Valar could have been testing the elves, but I think the Valar should have helped the humans, you didn't see them come help us when Morgoth attacked us! crying

Revive, o guild, REVIVE!

Woot! Yes, I read the Silmarillion for the second time, and this time...I understood it because I read it for the first time when I was like twelve. I took it with me everywhere, reading little bits at a time. Sometimes I would talk out loud to the book, somewhat disturbing those around me ("Ha ha, you died, I didn't like you anyway" and "Aww, that's so sad")

I think you make a good point churrlo (even if it was like two months ago). The Valar did interact with men though. Remember Tuor and Ulmo?

Yeah but the truth is, it was only a few select men... and they ended up getting into a war anyways! xd The Valar pretty much shunned men off, then complained that we didn't worship them or w/e.
