i learnt this one from a friend!!
the word "panic" came from the god pan who was a satyr and also was the origin of "pan flute/panpipes" he challenged Apollo in a music competition and lost epically and the judge was midas who was a king

They did part of an episode where they parodied the odyssey, it's quite humorous:

I thought they were mocking the Iliad in that episode, too![despite whatever ills i wish Agamemnon, i will save them for another time!]

In my favorite sci-fi show Stargate SG1 and its spin off Stargate Atlantis, two of their ships are named the Odyssey (which gets destroyed) and the Prometheus. As well, from the movie 300 (I think that is what it is called) my friends love yelling out this one part from it: "THIS IS SPARTA!"

Aravilui Tiranistion
Around here there's an Apollo Spas, and I've seen an Apollo tire company (explain that one. At least the spas make sense, since in his temple at Delphi I believe there were spas. God of medicine and all that.)

Also, the medical sign that looks like a staff? If I recall that's based on Hermes' staff.

Oh yes. Apollo college... Apparently they like the Sun god around here a lot.

Actually the medical sign is the rod of Asclepius (he was the god of medicine and healing). The rod of Asclepius is a single serpent entwined around a staff. It is often mistaken for the caduceus (staff of Hermes), which is the two snakes entwined around a winged staff, when it was adopted by the US Army Medical Corps

There is the movie Oh Brother, Where Art Thou? which is a modern satire based loosely on Homer's Odyssey

I think the best way to explain what this movie is about is to look at this website -
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oh_Brother,_Where_Art_Thou#Plot . I am terrible at explaining movies and their plot, and I don't want to leave anything out that could help explain how this movie is based off the Odyssey.

I remember watching this movie years ago, but I had never tried to compare it to the Odyssey until my English teacher mentioned it to me when I was a sophomore. She was teaching us about Greek/Roman mythology and we had just finished reading the Odyssey. It was only then that I could see the connection.

How do these two stories compare? Probably the best website that explains this is http://www.blurtit.com/q406275.html

Wouldn't joke about that, at all, really.
Although lately its less of a case with the former and more of a case with the latter that's getting more famous, especially when it comes to the general Vamp!-induced drivel we're stuck with.
