Today was in Marlo's mind, a perfect day. The forecast was mildly cloudy, with no chance of rain, plus, it was warm, but not muggy. Perfection of nature, in nature. At least as close to nature he could get in the city. The park was thankfully quite, given that kids tended to run amok in the day and scream like tiny banshees. And what made this day even better? He had his favorite lunch. Pizza from the little corner market, paired with an nice cold coke. Ah, life didn't get much better.

Well, actually, it did. He had the fortune to bring his Lyre with him, and, thankfully, the semi-empty park meant that he wouldn't be disturbed. Pizza in mouth, he began a slow melody, munching on the pepperoni.

Although it hasn't been very long since she's arrived in Destiny City, Alba has already found herself knee-deep in school work, after school activities, and floundering with letters she promised she'd write to her parents once she's settled down in her dorm. All in all, it's been a very hectic transition for her, and "settled down" is the least likely adjective she'd use to describe her situation right now.

However, today is a different day. She has managed to get most of her studying done for the weekend, had no activities to attend, and finally did send that letter to mom and dad. The day was also fantastic outside, so after an accomplished morning, Alba decided to check out the nearby park that's walking distance from her dorm, sketchbook and pencil stowed away in her tote bag.

What a good way to celebrate my first weekend from school
, she thought to herself as she turned the corner to face the entrance of what appeared to be a huge expanse of meticulously mowed grass, a clutter of trees, and winding pathways. It's been a long time since she'd visit a park, and thought it would be a good way to start her "one sketch a day" project.

After following a trail deeper into the park, she found the perfect place to do so: underneath the shade of a large oak tree, away from all the hustle and bustle of children and every-day joggers. Before she could make herself comfortable and take out her supplies, though, a startling sound reached her ears.

....is that a guitar?.....no, a harp? Confused, and curious, she decided to put aside her project (for now), and carefully walked as quietly as she could so as not to lose sound of the melody. It couldn't be too far, after all!

This always happened when he played his music. Marlo got engrossed. Even with the pizza slowly falling, he had to finish the song. He just had to. Otherwise, it would come out sloppy and hardly soothing. Not to mention aggravating. Thankfully the song was short and Marlo managed to get the last notes in before catching the falling slice of pepperoni. Looking at his open case, he shook his head noticing the loose change people has dropped into the case. he didn't mind but..It did make Marlo wonder if he looked like a needy vagabond. The tips aside, he was down to the crust of the slice now, (which was no doubt one the the best parts), and the fact he didn't have to worry about falling sauce gave him a bit more of a good feeling.

Enough of a good feeling that he decided to play a much more jovial song, and one that would be slightly longer. Scooting around on the grass a bit, he shoved the last bit of pizza crust in his mouth and resumed his playing.

She could hear the melody getting louder with every step she took and felt that she was just about to uncover her mysterious music-player when, just as suddenly it had started, the music stopped. Furrowing her brows together, Alba looked around her vicinity to see if maybe she had accidentally stepped into plain view of...well, whatever it is, and it had potentially gone quiet from her presence. But as it were, she was the only one around that she could see, which meant that...

"..it's gone," she sighed. Disappointed, she was about to turn around to go back to her little spot under the tree when a different tune began, though very much from the same source. Alba's eyes lit up, and instead of going back from where she came, she twirled to face the direction she was before and followed the sound. She had been right before; it didn't take long for her to find what she was looking for.

He seemed very serious, and completely into his ...well, she's still not sure what the instrument he's playing is, truthfully. It kind of looks like a harp, Alba thought to herself as she watched him play. She enjoyed the happy melody, and not wanting to disturb his music-making, she quietly sits down so she may listen to more.

His eyes closed, Marlo was only aware of his lyre's melody on the feel of the strings being plucked. To him, this was what true euphoria must be like. Undisturbed, and free to do what you loved. Soon, well, about three fourths into the song, Marlo got that nagging feeling he was being watched. It was typical considering what he was doing. However, he slowly felt a bit more awkward playing, knowing without certainly if he had an audience or not. As the song came to an end, he was ready to yell at whoever had been staring at him, (or be ashamed by his own paranoia).
Looking up with a scowl he expected some kid or a middle aged person but instead, found himself looking at a girl around his own age. Quickly blushing, thinking that just moments ago he was ready to yell her off, he looked back down at the lyre. "...Doyouhavearequest?" His voice was soft and almost meek.

Alba indeed did enjoy the song, and was almost sad to hear its last notes played and fade into the near silence. She wasn't sure what to make of this quiet and collected fellow, but any person who enjoys and plays music surely isn't that bad, right?

However, she was caught off-guard when his eyes finally made their way up to hers, a scowl firmly planted on his lips, eyebrows teetering close to his once closed eyes. She felt a sense of panic race through; perhaps it was wrong of her to just sit and listen to his music, that she was intruding on his privacy...

Though his next words perplexed her. "..wha..?" She wasn't exactly prepared for that, though it seemed that the situation could be said for both parties. He didn't seem upset anymore, after all.

"..well....Do you know Sound of Silence?" It was a hesitant and meek request. Her music tastes definitely derived more from what her parents enjoyed rather than the sort of mainstream radio music that people her age were more apt to listen to.

"..Sure." His voice was still a bit quite, however, it was less meek and mumbled. Scooting around, and getting himself comfortable, his face still held a light blush. Suddenly, he realized that he didn't know 'Sound of Silence'. More so...he made up his own music on average. Oh um..well, what could he do now? Letting the real silence linger, he thought of a solution, but, Marlo wasn't quite sure it would work.
"...Ta-da. The Sound of Silence." He made a motion with his hand and looked up, giving her a weak smile. Technically it was the 'sound' of silence he had (not) played.

After his acknowledgment of the old pop/folk song, she waited for him to begin playing that familiar simple tune of two notes going back and forth, slowly crescendo-ing to something more encompassing and more emotional with each strum of a string. In fact, she became a little unaware of his silence as she imagined the song the way it was, until her concentration was broken up by his 'finale'.

Alba blinked in surprise, now realizing that he actually didn't play the song. A smile curled at the tip of her lips, dimples deeply imbedded into her cheeks as she finally got the joke that he made. "Haha!", she giggled, a throaty sound that almost travels through her nose.

"That's funny!" she manages to spew out after a few heaves of laughter were through, ".....but you don't know Simon and Garfunkel?"

(Ahaha, I'm not sure if we are allowed to reference real-life things such as bands, but since I kind of fail at making up band names, I went ahead and did it X( also, I'll try and squeeze a reply in-between jobs tomorrow, and if I don't, I definitely will when I get back home <3 )

"I make my own songs. I don't know many mainstream or classics." he shrugged and picked a few strings checking the tuning. "I go with what sounds good." Looking around he noticed he had finished his meal and there wasn't much to do besides play the lyre and relax. However, he wasn't much for relaxing when being stared at. Marlo was unused to an audience apart from his brother or the concerts, but in the concerts he wasn't the center of attention.

"...I hope my playing didn't annoy you...or my lack of playing." He just felt, awkward. It felt so unreal to play for another person that wasn't his brother, and on top of that she was kind of cute. Not that it mattered. Marlo pushed those thoughts aside. She was just like any other person. They just wanted to listen. That was all.

"Nah, not many people know about them now...they're kind of old," Alba admits. "It's something my parents always listened to and I kind of caught on with it...but I think it's very cool that you can make your own music!" And that was the truth! She briefly lamented her own inability to be so at one with harmony, and her dependency on other people's musical creation to sing along to when by herself.

Speaking of which. "Oh no, no, I enjoyed it! I especially liked the cheerful tune. I hope my eavesdropping didn't distract or annoy you..." She certainly would have felt embarrassed or flustered if someone overheard her singing or looking over her shoulder at her sketches. Some things are best left private, after all!

Hopefully, names weren't one of them. "...I'm Alba. What's your name?"

Her complements felt nice. Any artist liked to be complimented, whatever their medium. "My folks..eh..I never cared for much of what they liked." It was true, rather, he tended to like the opposite. "And mainstream stuff gets kinda boring. So..it's better to make stuff up in my opinion."

Holding up a hand, he smiled a bit weakly. "Marlo Xanis. Um...not to bother but...why are you in the park by yourself? Most of the time, I just see couples." He shrugged. heck, it wasn't really ant of his business.
PostPosted: Mon Sep 07, 2009 10:45 pm

That's what most kids here seem to do as well, Alba noticed. Not many liked what their parents liked, and even go as far as rebelling against them to obtain their own individuality....though she's quite sure Marlo doesn't fit that circumstance, even if he did prefer his own stuff.

"Actually, this is my first time here," she replied, "I had a free day today and decided to check out the park near my campus. It's quite lovely here, I can understand why couples like to come by."

"What about you? Do you normally just play that...harp? in public places by yourself? "

Huh, he didn't really know what had spurred him to play in the park. It just seemed like a good idea at the time. So did the pizza. "Well...I normally don't play in public. Today seemed nice and the park is a bit empty so...I guess it was simply a spur of the moment." he shrugged and picked at a string.
"Also, it a lyre. Harp strings are plucked; a lyre it it strummed, much like a guitar. But, It's a common mistake..." he stopped picking the string, realizing it wasn't good for the instrument. "As for playing with others...not really, given I'm more to my own art then other's."

"Oooh.." She had heard of lyres before, but hadn't actually seen one until now. However, it would explain why she couldn't decide if she were listening to a guitar or a harp when she first heard him begin to play.

"You've never played with anyone before? Or is it that you have, and you've disliked it..." Alba blinked and gasped a little, immediately lifting a little hand to cover her mouth. "I apologize, I'm asking too many questions, and here you are probably wanting to get back into playing!"

Looking at her, he was a bit surprised at her statement. It was oddly true. he did want to go back to playing but...that would be rude at best. "I...don't mind talking. Just...most of the time, people talk of mundane things, or things of no interest to me." He leaned back, looking skyward. "I like playing well enough. It's one of the few things I do well. And..I used to play in concerts, but, the lyre is a are instrument. Few conductors know what do do with me, so they stick me on a harp...which I don't play as well. Or the guitar. Same thing in my perspective I know...a bit, but I'm hardly good. At least on the guitar I can still pluck the stings and don't end up breaking the instrument. I think I've broken a total of 7 harp strings in my life." Falling back forward, he shrugged. "Basically, I play alone, or I play in limbo."
He lifted the lyre to her. "Do you want to try?" It was a spur of them moment idea. But, he was a bit pleased with her curiosity. It..was a pleasant kind of inquisitiveness.
