THE TAUNTON STATE HOSPITAL HAUNTINGS
TAUNTON, MASSACHUSETTS 1833-2007
by Christina Perry

User Image

1833 the first insane asylum was born in Worcester Massachusetts. Over crowded with the mentally insane over a 16 year period, the government had no choice but to expand this facilty eventually leading to the worst undercover concentration camp for the mentally insane in the entire United States.

After being approved for a grant to extend it's facilities, the perfect town was designated in Taunton Massachusetts being named Taunton State Hospital. The numbers of petitions increased from the citizens of the Taunton Massachusetts community. They were over ruled and eventually this facility was built in the northern area of Taunton Massachusetts.

The facility was set over a farm land stretching acres and still to this day, a plow as well as a green house can still be seen sitting of to the side of the hospital. Taunton State Hospital has grown over the years to a massive architecture of modern day structure, however the events that took place were no where near appropriate with the laws, and the medical professionals were as sick as the patients.

After all buildings were appropriately constructed a series of horrific events took place that were over looked. Taunton State Hospital slowly turned into one of the sickest concentration camps for the mentally retarded and insane eventually leading to many murders and suicides. In 1854, no more then three years after the facility was completed the killings and torture began. Taunton State was set to be a facility in which the insane would be cured due to the serene surroundings and sympathetic nature of the staff. When the doors closed an entirely different story came about. On the far east of the facility (Now a juvenile hall), is where the shock treatment and blood bath experiments took place. This area as never been re-done and only added onto for the detention of juvenile delinquents. Still to this day stands a run down facility where the screams of the insane can still be heard. On the front part of one building there is an area of 1 foot standing space surrounded by bars and a chained fence where the insane would be left in to sleep in the night right after the 9pm freezing shock bath. If the insane were not dead by morning, they were then taken to the other part of the building (Which is no more then 1 foot away but still connected), and brutally tortured. It was in this building that the limbs of the insane would be sawed off and attached to another person, only to see if they could still be used and function correctly. Some inmates were boiled to death to see how long the human body could survive in scalding hot temperatures and how it affected the blood, and internal organs.

Some of these inmates were not insane. Back in these days, if a woman was thought to have had turrets, or depression, undiagnosed back then, she was put to an insane asylum. When many of these men and woman were to escape, most of the time they would only make it to the water tower about 20 acres from the hospital, later caught, and hacked to death. It is no wonder why the screams can still be heard throughout the facility today. Lights have been reported to be seen in the abandoned part of Taunton State, as well as electrical wires, and human hands streaking down the windows.

Seventy percent of Taunton State hospital was built over and now is a facility for the mentally retarded, and insane, with the most proper care needed. This facility is now one of the most successful hospitals for a decline in suicides, and medical treatment for the insane. Aside from this, many reports from staff members working in these facilities have ranged from weird screaming, to banging on the walls. Apparitions have been seen trying to hop a fence at the farthest end of the hospital, as also it can be seen behind this fence, figures running over the hill.

Taunton State hospital also serves as a mental hospital for children under the age of 18 as well. Please do not attempt to trespass, not because of the guard who looks like he is about to pass on anyways, but because of the paranormal events that take place here. Many people including, women, men, and children, have been known to enter this facility in illegal means and never come out. Missing persons in the city of Taunton also called "curse county", have been known to identify the last place visited with a group of friends in most cases was Taunton State Hospital. It is said that the State is aware of these events, and therefore this is why they only need one guard on the entire 200 acre facility. Most people that go there never come back anyways.

FRANKLIN CASTLE
CLEVELAND, OHIO 1865-2009

FROM HAUNTED PLACES

User Image

Strange voices coming from empty rooms and behind the walls, sounds of crying children, faces that suddenly materialize in the woodwork, spinning chandeliers, cold spots, and mysterious ectoplasm...these are but a few of the bizarre occurrences witnessed by those who have entered Franklin Castle, one of Ohio's most notorious haunted places. Built in 1865, this Gothic mansion located on Franklin Avenue in Ohio City was home to German immigrant Hannes Tiedemann, his wife, mother, and several children.

Hannes Tiedemann was a grocer and investment banker who had a reputation as a loud, harsh man. Because of his personality, many in the community believed that he was also abusive toward his family and ran his household like a tyrant. These rumors only intensified following the deaths of his children, wife and mother, who all died within a short period of time under "mysterious" circumstances. Many believe that Hannes also murdered his niece and a young servant girl.

Hannes Tiedemann left the castle in 1895 shortly after his wife died.

Yet, the legends and legacy of the castle continued, leading some to conclude that the castle itself is cursed.

MYSTERIOUS DEATHS

The Tiedemann deaths began with Hannes' 15 year-old daughter, Emma. Although her official cause of death was diabetes, legend has it that Emma was actually found hanging from the rafters in the attic. A few weeks after her death, Hannes' elderly mother died. Her cause of death is not known.

Then, between 1886 and 1888, at least 3 more Tiedemann children died in the castle. Again, their cause of death was not known, although some suspicious eyes fell upon Hannes. More babies were believed to have been born inside the castle, but that Hannes hid their death from the public.

According to legend, Hannes also murdered his young niece by hanging her from the rafters of a secret tunnel. He is also said to have killed a young servant girl on her wedding day in a fit of jealous rage, and strangled one of his mistresses.

Hannes' wife died in 1895. Officially, she died from liver disease, although many quietly suspected that Hannes was responsible for her death.

NAZI SPIES

In 1913, Franklin Castle was sold to the German Socialist Party. The group owned the castle for the next 55 years. During this time, not much is known about the goings on inside the castle, although many speculate that the party held secret meetings and engaged in espionage.

The wildest rumor involves the mass political assassination of about 20 members.

The party later rented out rooms of the castle to boarders. One of those persons was believed to be a doctor who performed "strange" experiments using human specimens.

HIDDEN ROOMS & STRANGE PASSAGES

Secret rooms and passages do exist inside the castle, although it is not known how many. Hannes Tiedemann supposedly used a secret room to store the bodies of his dead babies, and killed his niece in a hidden passage by the ballroom. His wife is said to have used a passage to safely gain access to her children, away from the prying eyes of her tyrannical husband.

The German Socialist party is said to have used the rooms and passages to their own advantage, even hiding the bullet-ridden bodies of its members in a secret room in the basement.

It is also believed that there is an underground tunnel that extends to Lake Erie. However, those who say they have been in the tunnel note that it ends at some point before the lake. An old still was found in one secret room by a later homeowner, giving rise to speculation that the house was also used as a speakeasy during Prohibition and that the tunnel was used to run booze out of the castle.

Inside the carriage house, the current homeowner did find a "mysterious cemented-over area in the floor."

THE WOMAN IN BLACK

In the windows of the turret, many have claimed seeing a woman dressed in black. She is believed to be the ghost of Rachel, the young servant girl Hannes murdered. According to legend, it was in front of one of these windows that Hannes hacked her to death with an axe.

In another variation of the tale, the black-clothed Rachel is actually one of the mistresses that Hannes strangled in one of the bedrooms.

BABY SKELETONS

In the 1970's, one of the owners found the skeletons of at least a dozen babies inside a small sealed room. They were later examined by the county coroner, who could make no definitive determination other than stating that the bones were very old. These skeletons could have simply been harmless medical specimens, although some say they are the bones of the missing Tiedemann children.

MORE BONES...

In the late 1970's, owner Sam Muscatello discovered a hidden panel in one of the walls in the tower room. Inside, he found a skeleton. No other information is known, although the current owner has suggested that Muscatello himself placed the skeleton there as a way to attract publicity.

OTHER GHOSTS

A young girl haunts the 4th floor ballroom. She may be the ghost of young Rachel, or Tiedemann's niece. In the ballroom, it is said that a large blood stain still appears on the marble floor, even though it was replaced about 30 years ago. In 1999, the ballroom was damaged in a fire and is being renovated. One wonders if this bloodstain will come back after the work is done.

The Romano family, who owned the home from 1968 to 1976, claimed it was visited by the ghost of a young girl, who interacted with the Romano children. The family later moved out of the house after receiving warnings by the ghost of a future death.

Muscatello, who found the skeleton, became physically ill while at the house and invited a local news crew to investigate. They reported strange events, including spinning chandeliers and equipment that moved on their own accord.

A newspaper boy claimed that when he knocked on the door, a voice told him to "come in." Once inside the foyer, he saw an apparition of a woman in white, who glided down the staircase and disappeared through a closed door.

Many have heard voices of children (often crying), and have seen faces that seem to suddenly materialize in the woodwork. Others say that doors open and shut on their own, and have seen fog or ectoplasm form inside the rooms. Voices coming from the walls, and "cold spots", have also been reported.

Others say the ghost of Tiedemann himself can sometimes be seen at the park where he died, looking to hitch a ride back home to his castle.

While many aspects of the stories are true--including the deaths of the Tiedemann children and wife, and the discovery of the baby skeletons--most could not be verified. There is no evidence that the deaths of the Tiedemann children, wife, and mother were anything other than natural.

Or were they?

Nidarosdomen is a Medieval cathedral and the biggest church in Europe. It was built in 1070 and restored in 1814. Building Nidarosdomen is the result of generations of craftsmen who spent a life time working. Many kings were coroneted at the Nidaros church. This is one of the oldest cathedrals!

There are several small chapels inside the cathedral. Tourists are not allowed to take pictures. You see the great alter, paintings and prayer tables along with benches where people can sit and listen to a medieval Christian melody. There are young priests who walk around modestly due to converse with people and help them with any of their questions.

The music scene in the Cathedral is varied.

Entertainment in Trondheim can be different from the other European cities such as: Rome, Paris etc. In fact you may find differences between here and the other places. Every person will experience Scandinavia differently. They hold several concerts and recitals during summer which consist of organ, choir and major recitals. The baroque organ is one of the cathedrals attractions. Have you ever heard of the ghost of monk in Nidarosdomen?!

The ghost story that I want to tell you is one of the most famous ghost stories in Norway. There are many witnesses who had seen the ghost or sensed his presence in the Cathedral back in 1920's and many years later!

Some say that he was a very handsome monk. One of the stories goes back in 1924 when a lady was at the Sunday service and was singing one of the psalms, suddenly she saw, a handsome, good looking young man near to one of the church's gate, standing and looking at her. The ghost had a long garment, his sharp blue eyes were shiny. He went through one of the choir members during the ceremony, then he separated his head from his bloody body, then he disappeared!

There were many who saw the ghost or even talked with him! That is why many years later a TV station decided to make a program about the Monk, but for some reasons they never made the program! Entertainment in Trondheim.
