Ok this is my third year playing clarinet... and I had a break of 9 months (long story) and now I cant play ANY notes higher than B Flat... any tips or tricks that can help me get my skill back?

WELL! I did it, I didn't do in time for my playing test (the first one) but I did get it right in time for the second playing test. I am now 1st Chair and happy as a clam. I am EASILY playing the upper register.

Plus, I know that the softer reed trick (very convinent and smart) was however not something I was able to do, because well... the teacher wanted us on at LEAST 2 and 1/2 reeds, and the other thing is I have been playing with a 2 and 1/2 reed since I was halfway into my 1st year of playing. But thanks for the tip.

Uhm... what else... of!! I tried moving around the peices and that worked, too.

But the REAL problem was that I had a faultly clarinet, and the nervousness of thinking I COULDNT play the notes made me NOT able to play it... so it was basically all in my head... thanks for the advice one and all, tho!

Make sure your reed is wet enough, and try turning a couple of the pieces a little. That helped me! (I dont play clarinet anymore. I'm a bassoonist. WHAT NOW!!!!!)

I'll ask my friend. She's a clarinetist.

Thanks for all the replies, but I don't have time to slowly work up the scales. Im already behind the class, and we have our second playing test in a little bit. I need to be able to play those notes.

Get a SOFT reed. Without playing for 9 months can cause havoc on your mouth. You need to get a very soft reed and just practice. Try tighting then loosening your mouth slowly and then faster on a C. Can you play in the register or are you talking about the upper octave? Practicing is a nessecity. Just go home and blow on the mouth piece for a while. Don't try to play anything, just take it and blow. Try and keep up a sound for a while. At last resort drop it down an octave.

Well first you have to make sure that your reed is not too wet...if it's too wet then it'll make it soft and it won't vibrate against the mouthpiece when you play it. Then you need to make sure that you have the right strenght reed. If you haven't played for that long you might need to go down either one reed strength or 1/2 a reed strength. When you go up to the high notes my private lessons teacher tells me to always think "eeeeee" you know like cheese. You also have to tighten your ombescure when you go up to high notes. It does take practice to strenghthen your ombescure, but it's not impossible. Just sit down for 10 or 15 minutes and work on getting those high notes. My teacher always tell me to start out with a low F and to add the register key and just keep going back and forth so you can get used to the ombescure changes. I hope this was able to help you. If you need anymore help feel free to PM me. I've played the clarinet for 7 years now, so i might be able to help!
