  Meh, not worth your time.
It looks like a KH rip off, but I kinda sort of want to check it out.

Has anyone else looked into this game? Has anyone played it? I've been seeing that kid all over deviant and I kept thinking he was Sora! I mean, seriously, can you tell me that these characters are not straight clones of Riku, Sora, Kairi and Roxas? As far as looks anyway?

Is Tetsuya Nomura losing his touch and creativity?

A Review from http://www.gamespot.com

It's pleasing to see that Square Enix--despite having the Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, and Kingdom Hearts megafranchises in its lineup--is still willing to go boldly into new frontiers with the release of original games like The World Ends With You. This role-playing game eschews the company's tried-and-true swords-and-sorcery settings and instead transports the action to modern-day Tokyo. Although there's nary a chocobo or keyblade to be found here, The World Ends With You still incorporates some of the company's best-known trademarks and wraps plenty of innovative new gameplay around them, particularly an initially mind-bending dual-screen combat system. The result is a game that manages to feel familiar and yet strikingly new at the same time, and one that deserves to be ranked alongside Square Enix's best works.

Yes, fighting on two screens can be a little confusing at first, but you'll get used to it.

At first glance, the game seems little more than a pastiche of all the things that have made the famed Japanese developer's RPGs massive successes in the past. Angsty teen hero with an absurdly angular haircut? Check. Complex, team-based combat system? You betcha. Detailed customization options with weapons and armor that border on the a**l retentive? Fer sure. But The World Ends With You merely uses these Square Enix conventions as a launching pad for a unique experience that is both impressive in its use of the Nintendo DS's capabilities and compelling in its storytelling.

The most apparent difference from previous Square games is location. The World Ends With You is set not in an imaginary kingdom, but entirely within Tokyo's fashion and shopping hub, Shibuya. Several real-world landmarks from Shibuya are re-created within the game, such as the train station, Shibuya Crossing, Hachiko's statue, Dogenzaka, and more. However, this shift to a modern setting isn't mere window dressing, given that it greatly complements the game's overall design. Developer Jupiter Corp has stuck to a character look similar to that found in the Kingdom Hearts series, and though the far-out fashion seemed somewhat out of place within that game universe, here it seems entirely appropriate to the fast-paced and fashion-conscious world of trendy Tokyo.

The story itself is a little The Matrix, a little Battle Royale. The game follows main character Neku Sakabara as he's forced to play The Reapers' Game, a sinister competition in which the (mostly) evil Reapers assign players like Neku a task every day for seven days. Fail to complete the task within the set time limit and the player is completely erased from existence. Strangely, none of the other inhabitants of busy Shibuya can see Neku or the other players, although a mysterious pin that Neku finds on his person when he first wakes up in Shibuya lets him read people's minds. What's even more disconcerting are the large groups of strange creatures now roaming the streets. Although normal people can't see these creatures--called the Noise--they can see Neku, and they're out for blood. Along the way, Neku is forced to make pacts with other characters because forming these bonds and fighting in pairs is the only way to deal damage to the Noise.

There are some genuine twists in this game's intriguing story, and there is also plenty of heartfelt emotion from its teenage protagonists, which makes for some truly touching moments. The themes explored here--finding your identity, overcoming insecurity, teen angst, coping with guilt, the weight of obligation--are nothing new for a Square Enix game, but they seem somewhat more resonant and identifiable because they're coming from characters who use mobile phones, eat fast food, and who do other things that ground them in the same world we live in.

Traversing the world of Shibuya is done through the stylus and touch screen, but battles are where it gets more complex. The game's setting might be somewhat of a departure for a Square Enix game, but the combat is a completely new take that uses both of the DS's screens at the same time. Neku and his partner share the same health bar, while the Noise they're fighting appear on both screens at once (although not necessarily in the same location). On the bottom screen is Neku, whom you control via different directional swipes with the stylus on the touch screen. Neku uses objects called psych pins to attack, and each type of pin requires a specific move with the stylus to unleash its power. These moves can include rapidly tapping the screen, performing slashes across enemies, quickly scratching empty space, drawing circles with the stylus, and more. There are also some pins that require you to yell into the DS's microphone.

These pins feature such varied powers as the ability to call a meteor strike, erupt a mini volcano, create lines of flames, throw cars and other objects around, shoot out electrical fields, and much more. Though there are supposed to be 300 different pins to be found in The World Ends With You, that doesn't mean there are 300 different types of powers to be unleashed in the game. Considering that many powers are replicated among different brands in the game (more on this later) you can definitely expect to see the same powers again and again. And just like Neku, psych pins can gain experience in battles, going up in levels the more times they're used.

The DS's top screen is where Neku's current partner will battle the Noise. The partner's actions are controlled via the D pad, with different combinations of directional presses resulting in different attacks or defensive maneuvers. Both Neku and his partner can also unleash powerful combos, which are earned by following a specific pattern of attacks on the top screen and released via tapping the bottom screen.

Some real life Shibuya landmarks can be found in the game.

As you might guess, controlling both characters at the same time is confusing. Thankfully, the World Ends With You rewards you not for trying to control the action on both screens simultaneously, but for rapidly switching control from one to the other in a smooth way. At the beginning of each fight, Neku will be bathed in a green light. As soon as he makes a successful attack, this green light will move to his partner in the top screen, which will then move back to Neku after the partner makes an attack. Successfully passing this green puck back and forth between the two results in increasing damage bonuses done to enemies, which of course means that you'll need to concentrate on whoever has the puck to keep the combo going.

Squee!!!! The World Ends with You~! heart I've played the game Yamaxchan, so I can tell you a bit about it. 3nodding

The story is pretty unique and it has a lot of surprising twists that keeps you interested. I've never encountered a story like this before. The characters are interesting as well, some more than others, but it's their overall interaction that keeps the storyline moving. In the game I didn't feel like the characters were too similar to anyone in KH. In my opinion, the protagonist is someone who you kinda grow to like. He's not someone who is adorable and immediately likable, like Sora. However, it's his progression as a person that players learn to like him. The other characters are cool - even the bad guys - but I'm afraid of giving too much away, so you'll have to learn about them on your own.

The art may be similar, but it's definitely got it's own vibe to it, which is different than Kingdom Hearts. It feels very...hip and trendy. Ha ha. The songs are addicting and should be stored in your ipod too. LOL.

As far as the game play is concerned, it was kinda difficult for me at first because you are playing on both screens. You gotta multitask, and for me that's tough. ^^; However, after a while you'll probably get the hang of it. If not, don't fret because if you end up button mashing, which I did a few times, you'll still be able to attack decently. During the game you'll be given tasks to do, which can be annoying if you don't remember the area too well. There is a map, but yeah even I got confused a few times.

The game becomes addicting when you start to collect more pins, which are your weapons. The higher level pins are pretty cool and do awesome things. You've gotta keep an eye on it though because people make the mistake of using only a certain set of pins, when you really need to level up all the pins you've collected.

The minigame in the game is all right as a side distraction, but it doesn't really add or subtract to the game. It's kind of like Blitzball in FFX. Ha ha.

The down sides: Well, some boss battles were super annoying. And if you don't have the right pin to heal, you may find yourself playing the battle over and over again. Remembering to level new pins can be bothersome. Oh and sometimes you have to have certain pins to do certain things. Meh. A few things can become predictable, but nothing too bad. It does get kind of repetitive, but it's just like grinding in any other RPG. Also, remembering to change "clothes" (Which is kind of like armor) in certain areas of the map is a step I don't really care for.

Overall, I liked the game, and if anyone else has it you can technically shop their inventory. My boyfriend had the game and I bought an awesome pin from him. You can save almost anytime. If I were you, I'd give it a try, but good luck finding it. It was released a few years ago, so it may be hard to find. 3nodding heart Wow that was a long rant. Ha ha.

i loved it, japan loves it, but the title in america supposibly screwd the game o_O it gives off a horrorish nonpleasent game compared to kingdom hearts which gives off magical pony wonders. +it had disney characters so little kids loved it too. i beat the game but i still just do one command for my second person D; shiki + neku = forever xDD

I have never played the game but I know quite a lot about it despite!(I spoil myself too much, since there's no chance for me to ever play the game myself. :l)If you can,GO PLAY IT NOW.AND THEN RUB IT IN MY FACE AND TELL ME ALL ABOUT IT.

I really do love the characters, even if they do pass as Kingdom Hearts rip-offs!(Nomura indeed needs to work on his creativity.)As much as I love Kingdom Hearts,I'd trade Sora,Riku, and Kairi for Neku,Joshua, and Shiki.(I'm an organization XIII fan anyway.)Because first,as much as Sora's adorkably cute,he killed them, they could've worked something out,but no!He just listened to some old guy and killed them!Second, the kid everyone knows by his angst versus the funny but condenscending p***k...I'd pick the p***k,because he's pink! And 'Pink is the color of love, and a humanitarian like me loves people.'.Third,Shiki can fight.Kairi just borrowed Riku's keyblade.

TWEWY is like,PG-13/14-ish unlike Kingdom Hearts,which is directed at kids mostly.They have some cursing,innuendos,'effin depressing moments,and kids might start killing themselves thinking they'll just play the Reaper's Game and come back to life and some crud like that.Oh,and you can make them crossdress....just saying. X3;;

The name change to 'It's a Wonderful World' to 'The World Ends With You' is confusing for me sometimes since a lot of people prefer to call it in its original japanese title.

Thank you very much for your input everyone, especially Water_Angel08 for your really in depth explanation. xD I will definitely consider it. It isn't very expensive so even if I don't like it, I can't lose!

But first, I need a DS. :3

For a very long time, it's the only game I had for my DS and I was VERY happy with it.
I've put about 200 hours into that game. No lie ~

I love the characters, and I love the story, and the gameplay, and pretty much everything about it.

Sure, it looks a lot like KH.
Hell it kinda MOVES like KH, but it's Enix, after all. There's always SOMETHING that ties Enix games together. In my opinion it's what makes Square Square. xD

But really, it's a very good game.
I love the fashion aspect of it. Everything counts on what you're wearing and what Neku and his partner (I only use JoshJosh personally. I love looking at him. xD) are willing to pull off.
My favourite shop is Lapin Angelique. I use nothing but them and Pavo Real.
Cuteness. xD

And then on top of that, I'VE never been, but I think it's a very convincing Shibuya!
I mean if you look it up online, they've got all the majour stuff that makes Shibuya Shibuya, right?
I have myself convinced if ever I got stuck there I'd just have to pull out my DS and look at the map.
(Ridiculous, of course, but it'd certainly be hysterical if it worked)

Love this game. x3

Glad to have helped. :3 But yeah, the game would be good if you had a DS first. ^^;;;;;

Hmm, maybe you should buy the game, since it's rare to find, then hold onto it until you get a DS...? O_o; Though that's still kinda...yeah...
