Nyoka was sunning himself on one of the low branches in the jungle, content and calm in the sleep silence of the day. Well...not really silence because when one lived in the jungle you quickly realised that you'd have to get used to all the sounds.
Monkeys screeching.
Distant roars.
Mindless chatters of birds.
Throughout the day and the night, something would be stirring or singing or arguing. So, by silence, he meant that nothing was talking to him. Not yet, anyway.
---
Close by, Panna, one of the females of Nyoka and Janja's only clutch, was busy trying to get her jaws around the large rodent she had caught. Half of its body was gone, so that only its hund-quarters, tail and clawed feet remained.
Nevertheless, as soon as the rodent was gone, there was no doubt she'd start her jibbering again.

Janja herself had once again gotten used to the familiar feel of the jungle. For the longest time she had spent her days in the humid vegetation, up until that lioness had left. That was something she had never mentioned to her mate, as it had never come up in conversation before. At one point she had been the familiar to a young lioness, her only company. She supposed that she had taken pity on the girl otherwise she would've never had anything to do with her.
Once the little lioness had found a home, or when Janja had assumed she had found a home, she took her leave. Eventually it led to her meet Nyoka, something she was perfectly fine with.
"Nyoka, do you ever missssss Rokopelli?"
--
Saa'ke let a yawn slither from her mouth as she uncurled from her position against the base of a tree. It had been a nice nap but now she was itching to do something. "Hmmm....what to do today..."

He lifted his head and blinked blearily across at his mate, smiling in the only way a serpent could. He never thought he'd be lucky enough to find a female he felt so comfortable with. He knew he was a difficult character to get on with and yet, they had clicked so well.
He couldn't imagine life without her now.
"Misss her?" He repeated softly. He'd always spent his time with Rokopelli arguing, angry, or using her for protection. Now, however, he had to admit he often found himself wondering what she was doing. Whether she was okay...
"Perhapsss I do." He replied after a moment. "I wonder what messssesss she hasss gotten herssself into." He hissed with faint laughter. "But, you and the family are more important." And they were, despite the fact that most of their children had left them now, striking out on their own to find their own mates and seal a future for them all. "Besssidesss, I think ssshe wasss more trouble than ssshe wasss worth." Did he mean that?
Probably not.
---
Panna finished the rodent and wriggled with contentment as the bulge of her dinner made its way down her throat and along the length of her body. She was a pretty girl of green with bright eyes and a somewhat cheerful demeanour.
She was, in fact, quite unlike her parents.
Then, after a moment of waiting for her food to go down, she heard her sister. Her head lifted and she glanced around. "Ssssaa'ke?" She loved her sister's name. "Where are you?"

Janja watched her mate to see how he would react. He had always claimed that he didn't care about the goddess at all but she knew better. You could pretend to hate something all you wanted but when it came down to it, if you had spent so long with the person, that you'd eventually care for them. "Ssssshe was convient," Janja agreed and would've shrugged if she could have. "I sssssuposssse so."
She shook her head. "Do you think that we ssssshould move on from here? I find the endlesssssss chatter tiressssome." She liked being on the move, to go to different places she hadn't been to before and now that the snakelets were all grown up she was ready to move on.
--
Saa'ke yawned once more as she moved across the jungle floor looking for something to entertain her. She was one that got bored rather easily. She found something that would interest her for all of, say four minutes, then she would be bored and move along. She couldn't really say that of her family, she would endure them for the time that they wanted her attention then she would hurry away before they started another conversation.
She loved them, they were family after all, but she could only keep her attention focused for so long.
She heard her sister call to her and figured that since she hadn't found anything entertaining yet she's play with her sister, "Panna, I'm over here."

He nodded. That was a good word for Rokopelli. And, now that he was properly thinking on her, he did miss her. Just a little bit. But heck, she was immortal. She was fine, right? Nothing could possibly want to harm her, even if she was irritating!
He tipped his head towards Janja and then nodded slowly. "A move would be good." He replied thoughtfully. "The jungle isss home, but it would be nice to ssscratch the ssscalesss againssst another land every now and then." His tongue flicked idly.
"What about the children, Janja? Thossse that are left?" Would they ask them to come too, or set them free? He'd almost hoped that they would have gone by now, in any case.
---
"Oh! There you are! Ssssaa'ke!" Panna slithered awkwardly over to her sister, curling up a little so that she could peer over at the other female. Snakes were few and far between, and Panna - who enjoyed serpent company - had decided to remain with her parents and sister for as long as they would allow her.
Striking off on her own just didn't seem all that great.
Her eyes went skyward to where her parents hung in the tree and she lowered her voice. "What do you think they're talking about, Sssaa?" She whispered. "They're alwaysss talking when they think we can't hear."

"They're free to make their own choicccessss," she told him letting her gaze fall on the jungle floor in case any of them were near by. "Persssssonally I'd like sssssome alone time with you," she grinned at the thought. Since the snakelets had arrived they had hardly any time for the two of them to be together. While she was glad that they had introduced more snakes out into the world she couldn't wait to move on, or for them to move on so that they could move on with their own lives.
"I ssssay we ssssimply tell them that we are leaving and if they wissssh to join ussss, we let them."
--
She grinned at her sister, shaking her head. "I'm not sssssure sssssisssster," she replied also looking up at their parents. "Perhapssss it isss time to move on?" She suggested dropping her gaze. She herself found the jungle most enjoyable, there were many a creature to keep her entertained and she enjoyed the humid atmosphere. "It'sssss been a while sssince they've been here."

He nodded, agreeing that some time alone with her would be wonderful. No kids pestering them and getting in their way. Yes. Peaceful. Just as it had been before. "It'sss decided then." He replied, moving to rub his head against the bottom of her jaw.
"Ssshould we tell them now?" He continued. "Sssince they're both trying to lisssten in, anyway."
---
Panna nodded thoughtfully. "If they were, would you go with them, Ssssaa'ke?" She had to admit that she had sensed something in her parents recently.
A sort of unease or...perhaps restlessness.
She hadn't understood it and she didn't understand it now. "Perhapsss they'll want usss to find boyfriendsss." She continued. "To carry on the ssspeciesss."

Janja nodded. "We might assss well. They would find out sssssssooner or later would they not love?" She asked glancing down at their daughters lurking beneath them wondering what they were were talking about. Their girls were smart, they were speaking in hushed tones trying to conceal the fact they were listening in.
"It'sssss now or never Nyoka."
--
"I ssssssupossssse for a while I might," Saa'ke replied and would've shrugged if she had be able to. "But perhapssss I will leave." She looked up at her parents, catching the eye of her mother who looked back over at their father. "It might be time for me to leave the nest."

With a slow sort of nod, Nyoka loosened his coils and allowed his body to slip slowly down to the ground, brushing against his beautiful, green mate. His eyes, glinting and bright as polished gems, switched from daughter to daughter, uncertain what they had already gathered.
"We plan to leave." Yes, when in doubt, be blunt and to the point. "Sssoon, too. Ssshare your thoughtsss with usss, daughtersss. You are ssstill here when the othersss have gone. What do you wisssh?"
---
Panna blinked, surprised and startled as her father literally dropped into their conversation. She straightened and hissed quietly, not quite sure how to answer her father's sudden words. Words that did indeed confirm what she and her sister had thought.
"What do we wisssh?" Her eyes darted to Saa'ke. "I cannot anssswer for sssisssster and honessstly...I cannot anssswer for myssself. I do not know what to do."
