It was a clear, quiet night. The stars glittered in the sky, what could be seen beyond the city lights. The day had been long and fruitful for the oh so creatively named Diner. Jasmin had spent the day in the kitchen, as she usually did. When she had first inherited her family's business, she had tried being a waitress but quickly grew fed up with the customers patting her on the head and asking her where her mommy was. She was a good cook, and as such, no one questioned it when she took over as the chief chef duties.
Now, after hours of slaving over a hot stove, she gladly sent the workers home and closed up the diner, flipping the sign. She took her time cleaning the kitchen, using it as a chance to wind down from the adrenaline of the day. Once every inch of the counters were scrubbed, all the dishes washed, and the food securely stored, she dusted shoved her hair out of her face and went to drag the garbage out into the alley behind the Diner.
She... was not exactly at her best, visually. Not quite five feet, her mousy brown hair was cut short, about chin length. It was just long enough to hide her face when it was lose, and to pull half back into a ponytail when she needed to keep it out of her eyes, as it was now. Her clothes were liberally stained with grease and food, from working in the kitchen all day, and there was a flour smear on her right cheek, right under her vividly purple eye. She was dressed simply, in a pair of loose jeans that had been rolled up so that she wouldn't trip over the legs, and about five shirts, which layered to make her look pudgy and shapeless. To anyone who didn't know her, she appeared to be a chubby little girl. One of the many reasons she kept her ID on her at all times. She certainly didn't look strong enough to be hauling the large garbage can she was dragging to the alley.
Jasmin had just shoved the can with the others and was about to step toward the safety of her diner when a scraping sound caught her attention. Thinking it was a stray cat or something, she ventured away from the door to her livelihood and into the darkness. She had a soft spot for all animals, and they tended to take a liking to her. She was too far from the doorway when the creature jumped out at her, slamming her into the wall.
The small woman choked on a scream and reacted instantly, grabbing the nearest thing, a brick, and slamming it into the creature's head as it bent its face down, aiming for her neck. She used her gift to put a bit of oomph in the blow and wasted no time in squirming away from it and racing toward the opening of the alley. Her only thought was to get out into the street where her attacker would have to deal with witnesses.

Matthew materialized in front of the girl, blocking her from the vampire as he lunged at the hunter and prey. With inhuman speed, Matthew reached around the vampire to crack his neck with a sickening sound, dropping him to the ground and building up the lightning storm above before incinerating body and heart. And then his attention turned back onto the female. "Do not be afraid. You will not remember this moment and soon you will be going about your business as normal."

Jasmin would have pivoted to avoid running face first into the man who appeared in front of her. While Matthew was busy with the vampire, she had spun and tried to get around him and out of the alley. Her instincts were telling her that crowds were good right now, and she wasn't going to question them. She didn't get more than few steps before everything was over, however, and when her savior spoke, she found herself spinning to face him, in shock.
Not remember what had happened? Was he kidding? Only one way to find one.
"Are you kidding?" she squeaked, her gaze darting between Matthew and the burned spot where her attacker had been.
