For some weird, bass ackwards, random reason I decided to connect further with my ancestors.
Mind you, I decided to do this now, while I hold down a part time job, a boyfriend trying to make a life with me, two college classes, three guilds (though this is the only active one...), and all the other mundane daily things of life. Why one would venture to pile more on top of themselves is quite beyond me. Perhaps the last two years of doing as little as humanly possible has provoked me to see if I can take -that- much activity in life...Whatever the reason, I've gone back to speaking with spirits.
While you don't exactly "go back to it", its been noticeable that any voices, feelings, ect have been on the back burner as ambient activity the last two years. If you feel you don't know how to talk to spirits, or feel you're incapable of it altogether, I ask you reexamine the only step needed in conversing with those on other sides.
Listen for them.
It'll come, as you open yourself up to listening it will come easier. Anyway, there are various forms other than just straight up listening, many involving talking boards that have been popularized by the infamous Ouija. Others may use pendulums, some tarot, crystal balls...there are a great many media to employ. I'm going to go into one that isn't used nearly as much as it should be (in my opinion). The lost art of Automatic Writing.
Mind you, before we start discussing this I am bound to warn you that these things can get a bit tricky. Some use the word "dangerous" and the ever popular adage "dont call up what you cant put down" comes to mind. I approach these things with respect, not fear. If you feel you have the maturity and respect to not only take the steps to protect yourself and your surroundings, but to clean up after your messes, then continue on. If you're the type who will pull out a pen and paper at a party to talk to Aunt Edna, just to spook your friends, stop now and deeply reconsider what communication really means 3nodding
Now, as I just stated, all Automatic Writing really needs is a pen, paper, and your un-willing body. I say that solely for humorous reasons, but the concept works similar to pendulums. You have to separate your mind from your body, use your body and dim down your inner voice, so that your ideas and thoughts do not will your hand to write. How do you know what to write then? Aha, that is where the fun comes in.
You first need to clear your mind of whats going on around you (this is assuming you've created a safe and clean space by casting a circle of some sort/made it abundantly clear to all energies out there that you are to remain safe and clear). Somehow manage to pry yourself from the days comings and going (and shut off that dang cellphone), and just relax. Invite whomever wishes to speak to speak, and get the message out that you're willing to talk. When you feel the time is "right", write.
I usually start off by asking who it is. Your hand will feel a slight tug, go with it. Letters may form from scribbles, you might not understand them at first but it will come to you...then ask whatever questions youd like. I suggest for beginners to ask yes/no questions, jut to get a feel for that "tug" sensation. When you learn to separate your semi-conscious thoughts from your motor skills, then you can ask the in-depth stuff.
We'll use last night as an example. I asked for my great-grandmother, a woman who died long before I was born, yet was dearly loved by all who remember her. I always wanted to meet Irene, so...after a few "unsuccessful" attempts, I got her attention. Firstly I asked for her name (just to be sure), and a few family facts. Then, I just let the conversation flow.
She confirmed a few suspicions I had (good ones mind you), and made a vivid point of getting two messages across; one for me, and one for my mother who was especially close to her. Mine was a bit personal, but she asked about a stuffed toy my mother had once. I didn't know why, but she wanted me to ask her about it. So this morning I did, and I suspect her reasoning behind it was to get my mum to think about my great-grandmum (Im sure she had her own reasoning too...).
Now, while doing this in a sleepy state is excellent, I will explain why it can be hazardous, and why you always need to cleanse to some extent when you are finished. I did the above mentioned, then fell asleep (I was dead tired). Without a thought other than to ask my mum about that freakin stuffed toy, I got up and ready for work as usual. Today was a typical autumn day, with lingering allergies. No biggie, pop a pill and they'll go away.
Im congested all day long, my heads in a fog, and anytime I come close to another human being, my allergies go haywire. Im not allergic to perfume, and hardly anything can irritate my senses to the extent they were today (I'd have to be in the dampest, moldiest basement in the middle of pollen season). Yet, 3:30 rolls around, 6 hours after initial pill-popping, and my allergies are going nuts. I go to a cafe and study for a while until I'm deadly tired, and sleep in my boyfriends car for 40 minutes.
I wake and remember the biggest, key, I-want-you-to-take-this-idea-from-this-story thing in the world. CLEANSING! Channeling and speaking with spirits summons a lot of energies, some of which can stick to you like peanut butter to the roof of a mouth. It is so incredibly important to cleanse as soon as possible after you're finished communicating with a spirit. You may not feel it at first, but take my word that you do not want little patches of fuzzy energies (with dubious intents) stuck on you for days on end. Chaos can and probably will ensue.
It can be as simple as taking down your circle and letting that energy come back into you, taking a shower (with the intent to cleanse), doing the LBR*, aligning your chakras, smudgings...the number of methods grow daily...Whatever your way, do it.
I aligned my chakras, I let whatever energy that was in me, out. I released it, saying that while I was happy it was present, it wasn't helping my sainty one bit. As I exhaled the final breath, my allergies let up. By three hours ago, they had ceased entirely.
While I do not believe my great-grandmother had any ill-intent for me whatsoever (jeeze...the homey feeling I got while she was present leads me to believe the extreme and exact opposite xd ), latent energies from either her, or another spirit invited in (and gone undetected) stuck to me. They didn't cause me bodily harm (much...), I could feel them. The day went a little wonky (bumping into things, dropping things, a general lack of dexterity...), and while it could have been caused by anything...I'd rather not go without cleansing and find out how the disorder could escalate...
Like I said, approach these activities with mature respect, and they can be extremely enlightening (once I was treated by a nice mythos story that completely changed my perspective of how life was created). Avoid bringing any fear or ill-intents into the conversation, clean up after yourself, and speaking in-depth with spirits can be greatly rewarding.

*The LBR, better known as The Lesser Banishing Ritual (of the Pentagram, sometimes) hails back to the more Qabalistic, ritual-oriented traditions. Used a great deal by the Golden Dawn and other Orders, the LBR is a method of not only cleansing, but used for clearing, protecting, healing, and often performed before rituals.
I will not go into the intensive details here, but you're basically invoking elements (in the forms of pentagrams, a symbol of protection) from the four directions, as well as above your head and below your feet. In the ritual, you invoke the power of angels, though I've seen versions that have been detailed to fit different Pantheons, as well as spirit animals. The LBR creates a sacred space similar to casting a circle, while clearing a room at the same time. It can be very useful (especially if you've been sick or depressed and want to banish ill-energies), and I suggest any serious practitioners to at least glance at it once in their path-time.
