Yeah. -w-
Tomorrow is my birthday.
I'm doing stuff today with friends and all.
Lol.
But anyway, tomorrow I'm going to the ocean with my parents, and we're going to bring my loverly-crazy-mare, Ruby.<3
She hates the ocean. I mean, she loves water, but when it comes to the crashing waves, she freaks. More so than usual. Haha. If its just a river or a puddle, she loves it. She throws her head around and splashes in the water. But I think the waves scare her, which is understandable.
I've been wanting to get her in the water for EVER, but never had the oppertunity to do it. I tried once, but I was wearing shoes and the saddle was on and i didn't exactly feel like ruining the leather. So I just got her next to the water. Which was quite the struggle.
I'm thinking, tomorrow I'll wear shorts I don't mind getting soaked/covered in horse dirt, and riding her bareback.
We're going to an ocean where horses are allowed, the sand is packed in, and she should have a nice time. ^^;;
I was wondering if anyone had some advice as to getting her in the water? I don't mean like, all the way in so she's swimming, but just enough so that she and I can have a bit of fun! ^^
I was planning on doing ground work away from any people that might be there, and letting her explore the water with me first. Then eventually getting on. Maybe while we're standing in the water.
Anyway, any advice would be helpful. ^^ This is just something fun that I hope I can make happen.

Just dont push her. If you push her to hard water will be a worse thing... Every step she takes closer to the water give her rubs and tell her shes a good girl. If she steps back. Just let her look at the water so she can be sure its not a man eating monster! Then ask her to go forward again. Really lightly. If you can use verbal signals rather than your legs.

Something I do with any horse I'm having problems with on the ground getting somewhere is If they are pulling back, I let them pull on me and for every inch they move toward me, I give slack in the line.
So stand in front and pull till they take a step the release the line so it's not tight, let it loose and try again. Horses naturally seek release. If something is pulling, they will eventually give in to relieve pressure. So for every inch, give massive slack.
I would say lead her in first then try to ride her in.
