She was tired. Why was she so tired? Perhaps she had lost a little too much blood the other day, when...when she'd gotten hurt. Nafsiari found the best way to deal with the incident was not to think about it, and as such tried to block it from her mind...but in the process she only reminded herself, and so it was a never ending circle. Shuddering slightly, she cowered at the back of her den, not having left for the few days since it happened. She was too scared - too afraid she'd do something wrong again, and get hurt. Placing her head gently in her paws, she licked where her paw had been bitten, wincing as it stung.
She'd told Cyn. At first her beloved had been horrified, and threatened to go tear the lion to shreds. It was only Sia's pleas for her to leave it that stopped her, and had her snuggle up so the two could fall asleep beside each other. If Cyn got herself hurt because of Sia, she'd never forgive herself. Cynerubor was too good for her - Nafsiari knew she didn't deserve such a wonderful mate. But she was grateful for her. Eternally grateful.
A melodic, strangely rhythmic song hummed out of Uyahambe's lips as he strolled through the jungle, eyes half-lidded and an amused smirk on his maw. It was so, so easy to feel on the top of the world lately. Before, he had struggled to live through each day, constantly trying to ride above all the hard, cold people around him in the area he used to live. But no longer. Now, he was pretty much king of the world. And it felt good.
Really good...
But where there downsides? He kept wondering. Everything had two sides. One good, one bad. One good, one bad...He'd always been on the bad side. Rare was the day when something good happened. But he learned to force the good out of things. He learned to con, lie, cheat and get what he wanted. He learned how to play people. Sometimes it had been fun. But sometimes it was boring. Now what did he do? Whatever he wanted. But hadn' he done whatever he wanted before all this? Yes, and no...Yes, he could, but no, because he didn't always get what he wanted. Now, he could alllllways get what he wanted with no trouble.
But he wasn't KING...
Black eyes hardening with a gleam of selfishness at the thought, Uyahambe's stance changed as he walked, the smirk dropping from his maw and the pleasant hum ceasing from his lips. Ugh, bad moods were sour. He needed a pick-me-up BAD. But what? Hmm...
Nafsiari.
He grinned. Pointing his nose to the air, the male changed his direction.
Sighing softly, she pondered how to spend her day today. Yesterday, she'd spent it constantly fretting over whether Cyn had taken back her promise, and gone and gotten herself into trouble. But, thankfully, the darker female had come back without any scratches, and instead told of how hard it had been to contain her anger all day. The two had snuggled down to rest, and when Nafsiari had woken Cyn had already set out to complete her jobs for the day.
Twisting her head, turning to face the large gash on her side, she began to tend to that instead. As a healer, she knew it was necessary to keep the wounds clean, and so she tried to remember to clean the wound and the fur around regularly. Tending to it for several moments, she then palced her head in her paws again, eyelids fluttering closed. Maybe a nap, to pass the time...
It wasn't hard for Uyahambe to find the brown lioness. All he had to do was follow the scent of wounded flesh, and that tell-tale scent of herb goo he had used to help her out with the other day. It was surely cleaned off by now, but it'd be a while before all of the scent went away.
Eyes shining curiously, the male made his way through twisting vines and tree limbs, grumbling to himself all the while about how strange the jungle was. Finally, he reached a little clearing and what looked to be a den of some kind. Nose wrinkling, Uya stepped inside the enclosure, not seeming cautious at all in his actions. He was met with the sight of the dozing lioness in question, limbs folded and eyes closed. Uya regarded her for a moment, something serious in his expression. The look was gone in an instant and he smiled in his lighthearted way, shrugging his shoulders back, but remaining at the entrance of the den.
"Takin' a little nap, poppet?" he called, knowing full well that she wasn't sleeping yet.

She smelt him just before she heard him, and her eyes flashed open wide in fear as she instantly pushed herself backwards against the rocky walls of her den, giving a loud whine of pain due to her injured paw. It hurt so bad! But she had to move...as far from him as she could. Why was he here!? He'd just walked in, without even asking! No warning, or anything! Hyperventilating a little, trying to calm her breathing, she whined long and low, just watching him with wide, frightened eyes.

Brows furrowing and mouth drawn downward, Uyahambe took a step back and tore himself to the far left so that only half of his body was visible, giving the female plenty of personal space, and perhaps as a comfort for her to know that there was plenty of room for her to escape through the entrance if she wanted to. Uya was soooo considerate about these things, after all. He didn't want her scared of him, both because he wanted to get to know her better, and because if she was scared of him, then...
His plan wouldn't work properly...
Black eyes shining with a smile, Uya sat down, tail coiling around his paws. But that went unseen by the female, as only his upper body could be seen twisting around to peer into the den. "Calm down, poppet, I'm not here to hurt you. Just came to see how you were doing." he said cheerfully.

He was...he was moving back? Why was he moving away? Wasn't he going to move forwards and try to attack her or hurt her or...or something bad? Why would he do such a thing? That was...that was being considerate, and the males weren't considerate. Although...he had helped her, yesterday. She'd been terrified, but he'd still helped her.
Maybe...was it possible?
...No, surely not.
He couldn't be a nice male, could he?
Relaxing just a little, she stopped hugging the rocky wall, standing instead as she lowered her head in a submissive manner, not wanting to displease him. He wasn't here to hurt her? The naive young lionness sensed truth of some sort in his words, and moved forwards a little, still not wanting to upset him. And he was being cheerful...that was nice. "S-S-Sorry," she whispered, not wanting to speak any louder.
"I'm...I'm fine, t-thank you."

Smile brightening and black eyes glinting, the brown male somehow came to seem even more relaxed, perhaps relieved and happy that the demure female wasn't displaying such outright signs of hatred and fear towards his person.
"You're welcome," he said, shaking his mane briefly. Something was itching him... After a moment it became apparent that a fly was buzzing around his head. Uya watched it like a hunter watching prey, forgetting about Sia for just a second. He snatched the fly in his paw and smashed it against the ground.
...Oh, cripes, that had been a little violent...
Ears folding, the male looked up at the female sheepishly, offering an almost apologetic grin. He smeared his paw back and out of sight, leaving an odd gray and red track in its wake.
"Sooooo...you're feeling better...That's great," he said strangely, like someone after something extremely awkward has just occurred. "I'm doing good, too...Ehem...Are you hungry at all?" he asked, struggling to find a change in topic. It really wasn't like him to lose focus when he was in the middle of a sca--errrr, conversation...with a friend.

She squeaked lightly at the violent death of the fly, eyes widening a little as her gaze remained on where the goo-ey body of the fly now was. She watched it for several moments before her gaze flickered back up to him, her form noticeably shuddering for a moment before she gave another squeak, taking the weight off of her injured foot. She attempted a smile, but gave up when it failed miserably, just swallowing the lump in her throat as she looked up at him from where she was, trying to look as vulnerable and submissive as possible. That was what they wanted, right?
Great? That she was feeling better? But...that was a nice thing to say, they weren't supposed to say nice things! She was so, so confused, and even more so as he asked if she was hungry. Was it a trick question? Would she have to catch it herself if she was? Her stomach grumbled, but she shook her head, meekly dipping her head in gratitude. "N-No t-t-thank y-you."

Ugh, damn.
He'd obviously shaken things up a bit too much with that fly thing. If only she'd known how he hated flies; pests...Insects were a horrendous problem back where he used to live. Fleas, ticks, flies, locusts...All those disgusting little things chose a host and made their home on any dirty lion's back. It was a wonder Uyahambe never got infested with any of them. Oh, but he had feared the possibility...Kept himself ridiculously clean...And he grew to loathe ALL insects.
But instead of wasting time telling her information about himself (though that was stupid of him, for it probably would've helped the situation a great deal), he continued talking about pointless things in an attempt to lighten the atmosphere.
"Ah...Yeah. Well, good! It's good that you're not hungry, 'cause it means you're getting enough to eat." he rambled.
WHAT WAS THIS FEMALE DOING TO HIS BRAIN?!
He had walked in there with such confidence--such bravado...Only to have it all crushed and smeared. Like that fly.
Ew...
"I'm not hungry, either." he said after a little while, black eyes shifting to rest on the clouds in the sky. His charming turn of phrase was the envy of all of Africa, surely.

Good? It was good, and she had enough to...wait, what? What was he talking about? It was almost like he was rambling, but that wasn't possible. He was one of the mighty males who'd conquered the Antianeira lands. Surely they were too...too violent and harsh, like all males were, to ramble!?
But then...she was wrong about a lot of things.
Creeping forwards a little, Sia's ears were pinned back, eyes still wide and muscles still tense, ready to leave. Maybe...Maybe this male wasn't too bad. Her mind screamed at her to remember past experiences, and listen to what her instincts told her. But Sia was a logical female, and her mind was telling her that this male wasn't like that. He seemed...different. Maybe...and the thought horrified her, but maybe if she gave him a chance, he might be nice?
"That's...g-good," she spoke a little louder, though still meekly, as she watched him, waiting for him to say something. When he didn't, her ears drooped a little, although she suddenly found her lips acting separately from her brain, spewing out words without her realizing.
"Areyoualright!?"

Snapping suddenly out of his off-track train of thoughts, Uya jerked his head in Sia's direection, ears tall and eyes wide with surprise. He blinked, casual businessman-like composure slipping fast. There was something about the female that was more than just...a game. She was like a puzzle. Well, not a game kind of...puzzle...More like...He...She...
What was he thinking?! She had just asked him a question. He was going to look incredibly stupid if he didn't reply in a timely manner.
"Yyyeah," he began strangely, still a little off-kilter from the unexpected question. But wasn't it a good thing she was talking to him without being talked at? That meant she was coming out of her shell more--getting more comfortable around him. That was a good thing.
The male recovered fairly quickly from his stupor, straightened his posture and assumed a typical cheerful, and maybe charming, grin. "I'm doing great. Just lost my train of thought for a moment." He sure did...And he needed to try hard not to ever lose it again. Or it would all be ruined. ...But what would be ruined? What was he even trying to do? He wasn't sure anymore...Prod the female around with sweet words and gestures, then drag her through the mud once she'd finally let go of her inhibitions?
So it was then that, staring at that frightened little face, ears folded and body shrinking, colorful eyes like windows to the soul, Uyahambe questioned his plots towards the lioness. If he questioned that, it meant questioning the entire take-over operation for the pride. If he did that...he could lose everything he had just gained. He hadn't even been there more than a month or two. Was he just going to question it all now? No, that was impossible. Things would still go according to plan. Things would still...
...Things were not going according to plan anymore...
"I should leave you to rest," he wavered, rising to his paws and turning to leave. "Just keep your weight off that paw."
Why was he so damned concerned about her paw, anyway? The plan? The plan...
There was no plan anymore.

He answered...but weirdly. Oh, had she said the wrong thing!? Had she done something wrong!? Watching him fearfully once again, wondering what punishment she'd receive, she was surprised when he grinned...he was smiling at her. That was nice. None of the males had smiled at her before. Instinct instantly had her return the smile with a small one of her own - but a smile nonetheless. He was doing great? ...Oh, he just lost his train of thought. Her ears flicked upwards, no longer pinned to her head, as her smile grew a little. She did that all the time!
...He was going?
Had she done something wrong again!?
Oh, so she could rest. She had to admit, she did quite like the idea of sleeping right then. He turned to leave, giving a comment about her paw, and as he turned away, she smiled wider still. Uya seemed...nice. She'd have to tell Cyn about him! ...If she could find her. Nafsiari had been unable to see much of her beloved recently, due to the new rules imposed by these males.
"I will," she called after him, in a surprising cheerful, bold voice, "...Thank you!"
And with that she carefully lowered herself to the floor, drifting off to sleep feeling safe and content for the first time in a long while.
